Middle East and North AfricaHapppppy FRIDAY!!!
Mornin....the sun is coming back slowly but surely

Kelz..hi dear....good luck with your schooling, as someone said, school, to me is not easy to accomplish especially when you are working full time with a husband and toddler. I dont know if I could ever go back, honestly.

HLM I LOVE INDIAN FOOD and so does my 9 year old daughter I can actually cook it quite well too. I had lived there for about 5 months.

Maureen...DETROIT GOING FOR THE CUP??? Is tonight the final game?? my god I am such a slacker, I didnt even watch but 1/2 of one Flyers game all season. It has been about 4 or 5 years since I have been to a game either.
I need to think about tickets for next season already. I think hubby would like it. He didn't like baseball much plus he said alot are not even really paying attention. I told him the game is slow and that is just another excuse to sit around, chit chat and drink...oh and everyone once in a while get up, cheer or WAVE..lol

Jeanne...please don't utter that dreadful word, cold. I would be happy never to have cold, ever.

Angel....hubby is coming in 14 days!!! WOW getting close, do you have a lot to do? It is so nice when they come and see all the trinkets, spices and goodies they have brought. Hubby brought a lot of surprises one of which was a very high quality bit of saffron, which I needed....needless to say it was wrapped in a small section of newspaper and got tossed with all the other newspaper that was protecting the delicate items....he still gets on me about that one. I just was so excited finally opening gifts from him I threw all the paper about and then just picked it up and threw it away.
Poor saffron never even made it to the cooking pot. blush.gif

Seattle gang..have fun...do everything I can't do ok....lol

Amanda, I thought it was today. Good God you still have to wait out the weekend! whistling.gif
GOOD LUCK GIRL, can't wait to read the update.

I saw an excellent movie Tues...Gran Torino
and another last night HOTEL RAWANDA..so good. very emotional and sad to see what really goes on in the world that most are oblivous to.
watched the Wrestler with hubby, was up till 4am blink.gif but that was OK, nothing special
Poor Mickey Rourke only looks a hair like what he used to...you can barely tell it is him AND his voice is completely different too. Anyone know what the story is with him?

Middle East and North AfricaHow did your MENA SO propose marriage?
I will be crying when I read how romantic and creative some your proposals were.

I met Tarik online through a MySpace email he sent to me in mid August '05.

I don't know what it is about these men falling head over heels so quickly but he become smitten immediately and just started to refer to me as "his" wife. It was flattering to receive so much attention and he is so handsome and attentive listener but in the beginning I wasn't so serious.

We had our online thing, it went on. We spent plenty of time chatting and getting to know each other (as much as one can from that distance)

I wouldn't say there was an actual proposal or a ring for that matter (that would have been nice offtopic45vn.gif), but nothing about our relationship is very conventional. The rings came after the civil marriage, when we had a little ceremony.

It wasn't until March of '06 that I realized it was real and I wanted to save myself just for him.

Sept 11 2006 I made my trip to Morocco (about 3 weeks). It was very exciting and then the talk continued more seriously about marriage. My divorce had just come through but I had to take this time, meet him first and then make up my mind.

Early Dec 06 I was back again, this time for 2 months and the marriage took place. It was alot of red tape getting that certificate and during that time still "getting to know each other" but I really feel in love with him and saw he was very serious about me.

We had no idea what were in for in this visa journey but thank god all the hard work, patience and perserverence paid off. He is now here with me and I can finally actually be his wife luv.gif

2 years married this last Feb 2, 2009.

Awww Tasha rose.gif I know its got to be so hard and I swear I wish there was some magic pill that could take the fear away from him so he could feel more comfortable here and not have such a negative feeling about being here. It's so hard for everyone and I'm sure there are tons of others out there that experience the same things, some just don't talk about it. It is not easy coming here for the first time and I can't imagine the strain on him with other children so far away too. It's a confusing time for all I'm sure. You guys are in my prayers rose.gif

Thanks Annie!

I will add for him it was the winter here. He was not prepared for how cold and how much Ohio weather changes.
Like others, pumping the gas, driving, getting around on his own.
How we have to work for what we want not get it spoiledly handed on a silver platter.
He wasn't prepared for his wife to have to take care of him for this long. This has been an ego buster.
Having to take any job to have a job.
How involved we feel that father's should be with their children. In the past he had never changed a diaper.
That late at night on Cinemax there is porn!
How Ramadan didn't feel like Ramadan it was just another month. He said he didn't feel the spirit of it this past year.
How he feels that the authorities here do not let us discipline our children well enough.
What kind of jobs attract the lazy kind of workers.
He does like the peacefulness and cleanliness of our country
Honestly I could go on and on and on.

For me:

I thought that Egypt was filthy! Trash and dust everywhere.
The noise, the driving was annoying.
How the kids and people are up all hours of the night. 2am swimming in the sea.
I miss the call to prayer.
I do not miss everybody wanting to see the "American". Once it was like a freak show at my MIL's home. It made my husband very upset.
I do not miss how some think that they are owed something or deserve it. This is in both countries of course but I saw quite a bit of it while I was there.
I was also suprised about how the looters were and the tour guides at the pyramids. They were money hungry.
The people sleeping in the streets in Alex.
I miss the smell of Shisha and the relaxed feel that EG had.
Amazement and wonderment of how so many people are sitting around in these coffee shops and wondering how they earned a living.
The amount of cats all over the trash cans and the smell of their pee.
The bargaining for everything really got on my nerve.
I am not a city girl so the crowds were a little intimidating to me. I could deal with it though.

Like I said for my husband there are many many more but I don't want to write a book!

I did like the ????

Ahh it's all coming back to me now...FREE STUFF

He cannot even fathom the amount of times we have gotten freebies for this and that.
Whether it is free coffee and doughnuts at our local grocer on Sunday mornings
to healthy kids day fest with all kinds of lunch, samples, pens paper, face painting, helmet FREE
Free? What is that and no one in Morocco is giving you something for free. NOTHING!
Buy one get one.... FREE
Wawa and MacDonalds all have the ketchups and salt and pepper and mayo and whatever
I mean that is like a homeless person's delight. Come in and take what you want, no one will stop you.

LOL...we do live a priviledged life

even if we are poor here, we can still live good
be born poor there and well you are pretty much screwed unsure.gif

Annie I do have to remind my hubby time and time again THIS IS NOT MOROCCO!
I mean taking the car and driving all about here and there till the sun comes up. Cops will find it a little suspicious if you are driving with the radio blaring at 2 or 3 am on a weeknight...oh alcohol on the breath....LICENSE SUSPENSION

He still stays up all night till the birds chirp and I guess his job allows him to sleep most of the day too, like home
but yeah he wants to "Party all night long" and by 11 I am like "goodnight". Partying is saved for the weekends in the real grown up working world honey. blink.gif

Biggest surprises for him when he arrived in the US :

1.) Definitely the cost of living (as many others have said ) One year later and he still can't wrap his mind around that one

2.) The calm organized manner that most people drive in (again as others have said)

3.) The efficiency of government (and other) offices (doctors, etc ) He is blown away that it doesn't take a week or more to obtain one document or check the status of something and that we aren't turned away 10 times being told incha allah tomorrow (which means no way it's gonna happen any time soon in Tunis)

4.) That family can live less than 10 or 20 minutes away and seeing them once a week is considered a "close " family. He's always asking every night am I sure we shouldn't go to my parents tonight and check on them? (My mom and step dad are 41 and 46 lol )

5.) How *fast* the internet is and that it doesn't have weekly/monthly outages. He's still in shock over that one hehe

6.) How clean the streets are and how you rarely if ever see anyone throwing trash down on the ground.

7.) How much money and time we spend on our pets (He's actually commented before pets in the US have better lives than 75% of Tunisians lol )

For me the biggest surprises I encountered in my years of trips to Tunisia :

1.) How much free/leisure time people seem to have (or make ) for themselves

2.) How people can spend days and weeks on end waiting for one small task to be accomplished by a government or professional office without losing their minds.

3.) Boys/men holding hands, hugging, kissing, etc
4.) How people that didn't know you from Adam made sure to stop and ask how are you, how's your family? "Labes? Labeeesss? "

5.) Women on the street being asked to remove their head scarfs/hijabs/coverings

I would add these to our list as well Ash.

Annie my husband too was floored and almost wanted to resist his first haircut here because it cost so much money.
You said $25.00, thank GOD we found a barber for 18.00 (tip included!) The fact that I as a woman could enter the shop was also shocking. The barber shop is a man's place and far be it for a woman to enter blush.gif

Also I was surprised it even got cold in Morocco.
And damn cold! Their seasons are comparable to ours and man with no heaters in the houses, 10 mins away from the ocean and the tiled interior....you are talking cold baby! unsure.gif

a few things threw me for a loop

the driving not so much my mother taught me that everyone has a set of brakes and a horn for a reason **although not quite use to the light flashing yet**

How clean everyone and everything is .. except the sponge used to clean the dishes wacko.gif

The butt towel helpsmilie.gif in the bath room... learned to pack napkins or TP I dont mind the beday (sp ?) but I feel the need to wipe

the thing that got me the most... how much I miss it when I go home... my MIL cooking, having tea 5-6 times a day, hearing Arabic constantly, how I forget how to say what or why in English when I come home .. my 5 and 2 year old both answer when I say Sho ? lol

I have never seen nor had any idea about a b.. huh.gif butt towel rofl.gif

I think what surprised me most about my husband's country was the amount of stray cats that are living all over the place. In the streets and in the cafes. And here there are NO domestic animals lurking around.

I have traveled before meeing him, to a 3rd world country, so nothing was very much a surprise or hard to deal with but the degree of poverty really is extremely disheartening.

As far as what surprised hubby here, I think the reality that the cost of living is high and that women actually do have rights here and the authorities actually enforce those rights and protect women.

Also what is shown on TV is very shocking to him. I think alot of our guys have a good understanding of what U.S. is like but until you actually get here and see it all flashed in your face and living amongst it you can't really know what life is like here. We are so over the top and liberal and open here. Anything goes if you will and that just doesn't fly very well with my husband.

Also surprising is that anything and everything can constitute as a meal, it doesn't even have to be cooked with our own hands blush.gif

Good Morning

I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable weekend.
sad.gif Charles rose.gif Sadly as I am getting older I start to hear these things more and more

Amanda, haven't gotten to your post yet but good.gif YEAH at least it is good news.

I was just with my mom yesterday and she has more clothes than she can wear. With tags too.
She gets so upset when I see things she has or isn't using and I want to conviscate them devil.gif
I am in no way spoiled, I just want her to share a little of the wealth blush.gif
My mom is cool though when she is out she always picks things up on sale if she knows it will fit me and is my style.

She also works for a millionaire family and the lady, normally just plans to throw out any outdated, never used/barely used items (from silverware to underware). My mom, over the last 12 years would go through everything and distributes it to all of us as needed. You wouldn't believe the nice stuff and all name brand items with tags on them! She seriously outfitted my 2 little girls and my neice since they were born. She has 2 daughters nearly the same ages as mine and the lady and I used to be the same size so I got all her hand me downs. It really is sickening how much money people have, especially when they don't lift a finger to make it or even maintain their own home mad.gif They buy stuff they never even use or wear it once and are finished with it. Those items have become very much anticipated and well used!

Tash...good to see you dear.

I can't wait to hear more about the weekend meetup.

Hi Sara, my goodness I couldn't even imagine working a full time job and having to rush and get everyone else up and out the door unsure.gif Back then when they were small and needed me to do all for them I was pretty much stay at home and didnt have a job where I needed to get myself all dolled up to go to work. Wash and go. The kids were the ones who needed all the prep to get ready. Now, when I do have my girls and I have to get them off to school and me to work, I am late and totally stressed! It is not easy ladies, I understand and I guess I just try to do all I can BEFORE and make sure I wake up super early blink.gif wacko.gif

Have a good day all.

He's 30...was 28 when he got here. In terms of age he should've had his act together but living at home having his sisters wait on him didn't help. No one telling him "no" didn't help either. IMO ppl should have to live on their own, completely, for at least a solid year before they get married.

I second that
It is very difficult to be practically starting your entire life over again, having been deprived of
the normal life that men his age should be living. Inexperience, being catered to and not having any purpose
or responsibilities can set a man back many years.

I wonder how many women feel it is truly their duty to fulfill every one of their husband's
sexual needs when HE says so?

I mean it isn't very fulfilling for women when it becomes your duty whistling.gif

Once you are finished your interview you deal with the Consulate, not DOS. Unless there is AP I believe.
I would say that you are just dealing with the Consulate and they are going to issue that VISA..
GOOD NEWS...don't worry. biggrin.gif

Middle East and North AfricaA strange (or not so strange) situation...
I think it is something you need to thoroughly discuss with your doctor before you start getting worried.

Take your time with your SO before you rush into children.

I wish you the best of luck and think you are probably still very young and vital....you'll be just fine smile.gif

Anymore I wouldn't say any flight to Morocco would be cheap.
I fly into Casablanca, which is 2 hour train ride from Rabat.

I have paid in the upper $600s and as much as the upper $900s/.
I haven't been in a year though. I do travel Royal Air Maroc but thank God this year I dont have to stress
about finding a ticket, my husband has finally joined me here. Next year, 2010, we are looking to go in May.

I wonder if I am only woman here that hasn't worn, isn't going wear and hasn't been asked to wear hijab.

Just curious. I am not Muslim and not planning on, nor being stressed about, converting.

However I do have the utmost respect for those who follow their hearts and beliefs and do so.
I do keep my mind and heart open to the stories, lessons and traditions of my husband's religion and culture.

What I love is the generalization that Moroccan men should beware of American women and Morroccan women are more desirable than American women in the long run...why? Because they are obedient and keep their heads down? mad.gif
If innocence is the quality that makes a "good wife" then I would rather be "bad".

In all honesty I feel it is the women who should beware (seeing as how you talked about MoroccaninTexas just taking an American but in the future would be going back to his own roots and women) but I think what we, American women, have shown is great strength, faith and compromise in our relations with our MENA MEN....quite the contrary of how poorly we are judged on "our" (American women's) character.
