I know the strain of whatever I had lasted a little over 2 weeks.

Terri and Kamal...best wishes for many more blessed years of marriage

Paris heart....my bff is heading to Paris on the 28th.
Sorry to hear you are so bogged down before you go but I hope you get everything done in good time so you can relax a little and take it all in.

I can't believe how soon Halloween will be. I have yet to get my daughter her costume.

I have decided that hubby and I will try to rent a bunch of scary movies....his favorite. I am not much of a fan.

I am already feeling the holiday presence creeping in....I actually feel the need to start buying things little by little as to not be so bombarded during the month of December. I would be more than happy if gift giving was reserved for every other year whistling.gif

Enjoy your day everyone.
Jeanne 80s sounds devine...fortunately for us the temps will be creeping up near the 70 mark.
It has been darn cold around these parts mad.gif

Phillies won last night! YEAH.
I am not much for baseball BUT it is our home team, they became the world champions last year and if they win their game Wed against the Dodgers...well let's just say....WE ARE IN kicking.gif kicking.gif

I have a major day coming up tomorrow.
Taking the day off for some outrageous business. Wish me luck and lots of prayers.

Middle East and North AfricaThe First Year...
Nov 14 will be 1 year since hubby has arrived.

I certainly thought once the visa was in hand and he came that it would be all smooth sailing.
We had a very rough period of time, which thank GOD over the last few months have straightened out.

He did get a job within 6 weeks of arriving. Thank God for that! It gave him something to do, made him feel good about himself and he could help contribute to the household.

I am feeling more settled and hopeful these days. I certainly didn't go thru all this just to see it go down the tubes but it does take alot of talking and it is quite different living as a married couple face to face as opposed to thru a webcam for 1-2+ years.

He doesn't have his license but right now he doesn't need it.
We help each other out and he is learning more about what is available to him here, what he likes and what he may want to do in the future.

The first major thing for him will be to go back home, MAY 2010.

I feel that at first I thought the "visa" process was such a pain and stress, however, I didn't realize what was in store for me when he arrived and we go thru the adjustment and actually living together.

It is my hubby's first marriage and with the cultural differences that played a MAJOR role.
Not having been with a woman, dated or married certainly means there is alot of learning and compromising that needs to be had.

Well Good Luck All.
I have to say this has been one hell of a year for me in alot of ways and I just ask GOD to bring more
peace, happiness and prosperity to all of us who need it! rose.gif

Got our Y membership about a month ago now, Hubby going daily, me 2x.
I have to get over this funk I am in.

despite all that's out there: pills, plans and gimmicks nothing beats good ol eating less/eating right and get moving! good.gif

now if only I could talk myself into that.
I have been talking since the New Year and now 1/2 the year is over.

A friend of mine just starting on a cleanse....she only had a liquid diet of some sort for like 2 weeks and now she wants to do the raw foods thing. Sure, you'll lose quick like that..I'm curious to see if her jump start will become a regiment that she can REALLY stick to.

Jackie, as a trainer (and a lazy one at that! unsure.gif ) You should do a combination of the 2. The first thing you want to do is get moving and watch what and how much you eat. You can do your cardio before or after weights, whichever you prefer. I prefer before cuz that way I am all warmed up. Plus after doing a strength training routine, I rarely have the motivation or energy to do 20-40 mins of cardio. BUT the best is interval training where you do 3-5 mins of cardio 3-5 mins of strength.

I mean it isn't rocket science and you can surely do 10 mins and 10 mins too if you like. Alternating which form of cardio you do, like 10mins each stationary bike, treadmill and eliptical. 10 mins rowing, 10 mins stairclimbing or 10mins of crosstrainer. A total of 30 mins. Remember to do something you like. And when just starting out, work yourself up to 30-45 mins at least 3-5 days a week. Also, vary your rate of intensity and speed to keep the interval training, which really gets the juices flowing.

Strength training is so important for the ladies too, to keep our bone density and muscular tone, which as you know will start to deteriorate after having babies and more progressively after age 30. You can do your execises 3 sets of 12- 15 reps. Also, you can do all your sets on one machine before moving to the next or do a circuit where you do one set of say tricep dips, one set chest press and one set of shoulder raises. I think circuit/interval trainer works best, it keeps you moving and it helps prevent boredom.

I know we all want to look good but it will take time. First you will feel good and have more energy. It is so good for your mood once you get the endorphins going good.gif The strength training should be for all your body, not just specific parts, so that you will be well balanced.

Certainly don't forget to stretch. people really do neglect this aspect of fitness and underestimate it's benefits. It is so crucial to help prevent injuries, it increases flexibility and decreases alot of common aches and pains. If all I did was stretch, I would feel alot longer, leaner and stronger. It makes a tremendous difference plus it just helps to relax you mentally. A good stretch should take you no less than 15-20 mins, all over body and holding each stretch a minium of 30 secs as long as one minute. This is a great way to end your work out and rejuevinate you and your body!

Ok, I am ready to go now tongue.gif

Henna YOU GO GIRL!!! good.gif That is so funny, for a class to have that name. When I was teaching we had all kind of catchy names for our classes.
I miss doing classes. I really liked our dance aerobics. It was choreographed and we learned 7 dances to 7 songs in 7 weeks.

Well Tasha. I talked to my hubby last night, and even though I am not thrilled about the Y, we both have to do something.
So I am going to look into a membership here as well. It is better than nothing and the cheapest. I miss my LA FITNESS but it is the first time in
15 years that I am having to purchase a gym membership. I have always worked the gym so it came free.

Nawal...I love the new pix of the babies...I think your daughter looks like hubby and your son like you?

Well my New Year's Resolution has gone out the window...I am not working at the gym any more so that means if I want to work out in a gym I got to pay and quite frankly, for the last 15 years, I have been a gym rat and not paid a dime to be there. So I anticipate getting a family membership somewhere cuz i just cant motivate myself outside the gym and my darling husband wants to lose weight as well and look svelt by the time we go back to Maroc next spring.

I am so disappointed, I cant believe how much I have gained unsure.gif and how awful I feel and look. TOTALLY NOT LIKE ME AT ALL!
What a slacker I have been for the last year. I think one of the reasons is I dont have a full length mirror in my apt. I only have the small vanity mirror in the bathroom so all I ever see is from the chest up. When you dont actually get a real look and wear baggy clothes you dont realize how much you are really growing whistling.gif

Well I saw the thread and I start to get motivated sharing tips and anticipations with y'all but seriously ENOUGH TALKING!
And the good thing is hubby and me both got a lot of work to do and it will be nice to do that together.

I was working at LA FITNESS and I really liked it there but there is no way I can afford that on my budget.
Also, I dont want to be committed to working just to be able to go there. Soooooooo the YMCA ( my old workplace) is a more reasonable option.

I hate curves...I guess doing something is better than nothing from a trainer's perspective but I dont like the assembly line feel and way too small.

I was looking into a y membership as well. For a family membership it's around $99/month which is pretty steep imho. What's up with that. I thought the Y was a nonprofit organization so why the fees so high? The new one just built in my area has a teen room. My oldest went there with her friends but of course they all said it was "lame". They have a Wii there but I guess the tv is ancient and since just about everyone has one at home they don't like to use the one at the Y.

actually they have financial aid for those who qualify, i am going to try it out

my son is on my case...he is super skinny and into working out now, i feel bad, here, I have been a trainer all these years, trying to get him to find time to go with me to the gym, for FREE, and now I dont work there mad.gif
then my husband, who was so excited about seeing where I worked all these years and being able to come here with a free gym membership at a top notch place and ... huh.gif CANCELLED

now I worked at the Y for say...8 years...as a fitness instructor (mainly) of any and every class you can imagine....I was a gym attendant, doing fit checks and orientations and a personal trainer, probably one of the best jobs I had and paid well, but it was and would have always been part time and the facility is so small and really old. I like the family atmosphere and not feeling pressured by all the hot bods in the gym who are just there, basically, for looking whistling.gif Even when I was rock solid and in the gym 2 hours daily working out, those girls never broke a sweat and coming in on their cell phones, mad.gif all done up like they were going out on the town....

LA FITNESS just didnt pay good period and it was raking in the dough. I couldnt take it. Trainers make a ton of money and for my experience and certifications it just wasnt worth it, then hubby came and well, all my free time became "HE TIME".

The Y, in all my experience with classes and kids classes and camps and all really is not that cheap and I saw a ton of people I knew from the Y eventually follow suit to LA FITNESS, because the facility was more modern, upscale and HUGE! Just depends...I like kind of like a jumpin atmosphere...real social, big, tons of equipment....not crowded but busy and I like to hear good music too. We even had a juice bar at LA that was cool for protein smoothies.

Well as a trainer and having had everyone there see my prior form, even I am embarassed to show my face after about, oh say 6 months of not being there!

Count me in !!!

I posted here about 6 months when the weight was creeping up on me, now after a year of stress, over indulgent
eating and laziness it is time

MY NEW YEAR's RESOLUTION started on Monday

I want one of those weight tickers so I can keep track..it works when you have to fess up..ya know what i mean?

It is not just me....me and hubby and I dont want "marriage" to look like the reason for gaining weight and getting comfortable.

As a personal trainer it is so embarassing to be out of shape like this, but after all the years of being completely disciplined and fretting about how much time I had to work out, it is nice to be taking it easy. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH mad.gif

I am determined...thank god the thread is still thriving..it keeps reminding me blush.gif

there really are so many things you can do in home without equipment at all
JUST YOUR OWN BODY WEIGHT
and when you are just starting out DONT STRESS YOURSELF TOO MUCH, dont make unrealistic expectations and just do what you can
work yourself up gradually
i should talk right? this has been the hardest, most depressing year for me
all this immigration, living without my husband and feeling so hopeless and helpless
well we can always take back our life and find ourselves again and that is what i plan to do
this ramadan...this is the time for me and thank god i came across this thread again
you all have motivated this sad personal trainer
isnt it true that you can give the advice but not take your own?
well now I just want to start to eat better and less and just do whatever exercise I can do when I can
I have started 3 weeks ago by simply walking about 3 miles a day on my lunchbreak
it takes about 40 mins...it makes me feel so much better plus getting the sun in too!
just little steps...nothing too stressful...right...breath in..breath out

I AM IN!!!
And as some of you may know, when I posted here before, I am a certified personal trainer at a popular gym here in the states.
I just want to say that even trainers can fall off the wagon!
however, I have never let myself go for this long and this dramatically
amazing how long it takes to get to where you want and how little time to undo what you have accomplished
in one year I went from a size 4, 125 lbs to now a size 8 and I dont need to say how much I am now,
let's just say 20lbs in one year helpsmilie.gif

I know exactly what it takes to get to where i want and it can be done
we need discipline in all 3 areas....#1 first and foremost is DIET..what we take in and how much..quality and quantity
#2 lots of cardio...the more fat you have the more you have to burn daily and take in much less #3 resistance training
I am sure we all know this and with Ramadan here I started feeling this was an easy way for me to lose weight however, this fasting is not a healthy way to lose...i mean not drinking water is very dangerous esp in heat of summer
we need water and not eating all day, then stuffing ourselves late at night is not going to help our metabolism
plus we all know you need to stop eating by 7 at the latest everyday..this helps weightloss alot

my most fit time was when i was a vegetarian and living in india
i stopped eating american style...no more processed, frozen, packaged, overly fatty foods
all fruits and veggies...some little carbs....i mean losing meat and carbs really worked alot for me
but i was so healthy
i would eat 6 times a day..like every 2-3 hours..this is really much more effective and keeps you satisfied
I didnt eat the chips, candy and take out foods...they just werent available
it is hard in our culture....i mean taking out meat you need to make sure you replenish those nutrients, mainly protein and vitamins lost when not eating meat. for me, i was barely taking in much dairy that time too
BUT dairy is so necessary for us, as women...bones, teeth and even for weight loss and management

we just need to take little steps one day at a time
dont cut out everything at once....choose one category at a time to eliminate
move move move at least 30-40 mins daily
even for me now, not working in a gym full time anymore has me strapped for time
and after 3 kids I know how hard it is and how long it takes to get into shape
for those of us who are so serious...you can make major changes in as little as 4- 6 weeks with serious dedication
good luck to you all
and i am not waiting for the new year to make my changes
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
! good.gif

Carole

Welcome and as long as you have a notarized authentic certificate from Morocco then that is all you need.
I called the court house here to see if I needed to do anything additional here and they said no.
If you have a marriage certificate from there you are good and you do not get a license from here.

Middle East and North Africayour thoughts about this?
I just can't see how it is true, otherwise, there would have been, and continue to be, worldwide slaughters of all "infidels"
that come into any contact with Muslims.

We see that Muslims and people of other faiths can cohabitate beautifully.

It is only the few extremists that take that view seriously and follow through with their very
twisted "UNGOD LIKE" measures.

"Most American women (who meet up with Arabs/Muslims for the first time) have nothing to use as a barometer or gauge when trying to figure out what category of moral character or level of religious practice their man falls into... They have nothing to compare them to except men they know in their own culture."

I think that is a fair assumption

I am Muslim and perviz is Muslim, we have some family members that have married out side of our religion, the biggest issue is children, it is normally the mother that guides her children into religion, if the father is Muslim this is not so easy.

i have seen disagreements on simple daily issues with children more after the children get older than when they are little.

simple things such as dancing, how the child dresses, going to homes of their friends that eat pork, dating, its hard i wont say it is easy for a Muslim and non Muslim to raise children. it takes a lot of work it can be done, but its hard. and it requires a lot of thought before u bring a child into the relationship.

i will never go so far as to say that it can never work because i have seen it work, but it took a lot of work from the couple.
and u cant forget the Muslim mans parents, if they see a child being raised non Muslim they are not going to be silent about it because it is their duty to object.

really i have so so much respect and admiration for the women that are not Muslim that marry a Muslim. they have to work 100 times harder than we do to make it work.

i always prayer especially extra for all of the women that have entered into a marraige with a Muslim that are not Muslim them self.

Sure have.

My husband is Muslim and I am Christian. I really am not practicing
I also am very spiritual and have an interest in various religions not any one in particular.

For hubby there is only one. I have not converted nor do I plan to but I am always reading and researching to learn as much as I can about Islam and respect as the wife of a Muslim man.
Yes there are differences but I don't find our differences so much with religion as much with culture.

Welcome and Good Luck.

Alot of the ladies here are very knowledgable and can offer some great resources to help you.

Middle East and North AfricaOlive Oil
I was wondering the same thing.
I use alot of olive oil, either virgin or regular.
I do have Argan, I don't think that is what you mean tho.
Do they use Argan for dipping purposes?
I tell ya I have NEVER found any comparable olives around me.
Nothing like what i had in Morocco. The black oil cured ones I have found, not with the same taste, at Trader Joe's.
They had a glass jar called "MOROCCAN OLIVES" black oil cured, they were OK.

I would love to know what oil we can use for dipping.
Hubby will occasionally use the normal Olive Oil but I am sure he would love the REAL MOROCCAN kind. I wanted to agree with Caybee about it being a little green in colour.

Rushed to get here and had to wait another 20 mins till el bosso got here mad.gif

Beautiful, beautiful weather here!

Well I made the msmen, first time, and for first time I have to give myself a pat on the back.
It wasn't hard but time consuming and by the time I was finished I was beat.

Hubby came home and he was DELIGHTED! He couldn't believe it, even though I told him I was preparing to do it and he urged me not to with the receipe I had. He ate it and well, good.gif .
I just have to perfect it a little. In time I think I will get it.

I want to do another batch this weekend with my daughter and make the Rafisa.

HUMP DAY..YEAH....

car is fixed and hubby home from work tonight

Morning Mena!

Have a safe flight Jess!

Maureen I think the husbands can do more damage to the house, when there are no kids around!

Turia tongue.gif I was just going to post that whistling.gif

Jess, have a safe trip!!! When was the last time you visited the States??

Another gorgeous day, still very hot in the sun but the temps way down and humidity nearly nothing.
I am counting down till 5 pm tomorrow. Boss won't be here tomorrow or Tuesday, when I return.
Lucky him, I was hoping to get out a little early tomorrow mad.gif

Got some weekend plans, nothing major but I am actually looking forward to MONDAY off cuz hubby is too, which means we have a VERY RARE day, when we are both together all day and night, no work, no kids, just us and whatever we want to do!

Enjoy the rest of the day peeps ...one hour and 15 to go for me here.................... cool.gif

Middle East and North AfricaSick after medical
If he did come down with something due to a reaction to immunization he needs to be careful being ill and getting dehydrated during Ramadan. His symptoms may be worse do his weakness and not eating and drinking.

I agree if it continues, time to see a doctor.

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope he feels better.

Can I suggest maybe, like infants and toddlers, when they get their immunizations, they also may get a little sick and feverish....after all, the immunization is a small dose of the actual infection, is it not? unsure.gif

well found Reda a job it's just a part time gig but it's a start.... noone ever warns you how hard it is to find a job for an immergrant I am amazed at some of these employers gull. As a hiring manager myself it just reminds me what i need to be understanding of.

What's most important for Reda is he found soccer teams to play with Alhamdolilah .. *wipping brow* phew! so he is gaining friendships and connections to other employment opportunities that way.

Being married to a MENA man has it's up sides and some exhausting sides but all in all it's the love you get from them that makes it all worth while.
