Approved for the 2 yr green card today smile.gif I'll post the story tomorrow.

Yesterday Jeremy and I went to the SF USCIS office for his AOS interview. Our appointment was at 1:55pm but we arrived around 1:30pm. The office was very nice; not your typical 1970s, 1980s shabby government office décor. We turned in our appointment letter, showed the receptionist our passports and waited in the lobby for about 50 mins (about 20 – 30 mins after our 1:55pm appointment time). The office was fairly busy – they were calling people in every 7 – 10 minutes.

Eventually an officer called Jeremy’s name and I followed in. The officer was very very formal. I smiled at her and she gave me a face of stone. In her office, we swore to tell the truth during the interview. She asked to see our passports, my CA ID/DL, Jeremy’s EAD, Jeremy’s AP documents, Jeremy’s social security card (which he didn’t have with him but luckily he memorized the number). She then, very formally went through Jeremy’s AOS application – asked if he had ever committed a crime, joined the Communist party, etc. etc. She asked if we had ever been separated/had any martial difficulties since being married. She went over Jeremy’s G325a biographical data form that we submitted with the K1. Then she turned towards me and asked how we met, when we met, when we got engaged, where we got engaged, if we had an engagement party, when did we announce our engagement, if our families’ were ok with our engagement, if we had met each other’s family (specifically if I had met Jeremy’s family), when did I meet Jeremy’s family, who was at our wedding, why didn’t Jeremy’s family come to the wedding, where did we get married, where we’re going for our honeymoon. I thought that she’d ask Jeremy these questions but they were mostly directed towards me.

She then asked for all of our joint documents. We gave her: our lease agreement, our rental insurance, letters from my job showing that Jeremy, my spouse, is my dependant for medical, dental and vision coverage, bank statements from our joint bank account for the past 3 months, our family cell phone plan with both of our names on it. She left to show our documents to her supervisor. 7 minutes later she came back and asked to see photos. So we gave her a stack of pictures from our wedding and various pictures from this summer. She started to soften while looking at the pictures. I felt a little better after that. Then she said, “You guys don’t have enough evidence…” I thought “#######?!” but she pulled out a paper, stamped it, wrote Jeremy’s alien number on it and said, “You have to remove conditions on your green card within 90 days from your 2 year anniversary.” She also took several of the pictures and put them in our file. They were pictures of us embracing, pictures from the wedding with all of our guests, pictures from this summer of us, together, smiling and pictures of us with family and friends. I asked her what kind of evidence should we bring in 2 years and she said joint tax returns, joint credit cards, more bank statements, etc. She then told Jeremy that he couldn’t leave the country until he got his green card without having an infopass appointment. We talked about the honeymoon. And then she left to consult with a colleague. She came back and gave Jeremy his AP documents back and said only use them if we somehow are forced to leave the country during our honeymoon and border patrol specifically asks for it. Otherwise she said it will look suspicious for him to have an AOS approval in the computer and still have AP documents. She closed with, “It was nice to meet with you and Congratulations.”

The End.

A little FYI for anyone travelling before you get a green card:

This weekend Jeremy went to DC to visit a friend. At SFO Airport no one looked at his visa or I94. They just looked at the identifying page of his passport. No problem.

At Reagan Airport in DC - the TSA agent flipped through his passport:

TSA: Do you know that your I94 is expired?
J: Yes, but --
(She cut him off while flipping to his K1 visa)
TSA: Do you know that your visa has expired?
J: Yes, but it is a one-entry visa and I am adjusting status.
TSA: Ok.
(Hand passport back to him)

He had copies of the AOS NOA and the AOS interview letter with him but I think it's helpful to be informed and to know the right vocabulary in situations like this.

I hope that helps anyone who's planning to travel before you receive your green card.

Hey Aubrey and Koakland...what did you guys do about the birth certificates when you filed for AOS? Translate it yourself or pay someone? What did the translation look like? I can translate Portuguese but I don't know what USCIS wants.

Jeremy got an international birth certificate before leaving France. But it didn't look like anything special at all. The front page was in french and the back page had something like a key. "Field One - Birth. Field 2 - Country of Birth" etc. I'd follow Aubrey's advice and do the translation yourself.

Did you put specific dates down for your travel?
We're looking at the Ap document... Do we need it, we have no travel plans etc but thought it would do to have it just in case there's an emergency back in the UK and I have to go back?
Once I have the GC can I travel without the Ap document?

We just got the physical APs in the mail yeterday. There are no specific dates on them. I'll have to give them a closer look this week. We won't need them until next June but Jeremy will take them with him anytime he travels by plane just to avoid any problems. We also don't think that we'll ever use them because our AOS appt is next month. Assuming we pass the interview he'll get a GC and never have to use them. so i think it's up to you and Nick.

Can someone explain to me what we're supposed to do for AOS in regards to the medical stuff? I'm quite confused. What form(s) to submit, do we have to go to a doctor, etc?

Take the form that was filled out by the foreign doctor to a civil surgeon. They transcribe it onto the AOS paperwork. Voila. Jeremy had to get a new tetanus because the french doctor didnt fill out the date of his last shot. if the foreign form is filled out you should be good to go. We found a civil surgeon in our area so no need to send that paperwork to Dr. Arnold. The cost was about $40 (minus the tetanus).

Have him make sure his name is right on the I-94 when he enters, the same as it is on the visa. The POE officer screwed ours up and it has made getting a SSN a hassle.

It is cool that he will be here soon. good.gif

Another piece of advice - not sure if you can control this but the POE officer wrote something that looked like "K4" instead of "K1" on the I94. It delayed Jeremy's ssn process for 3 weeks. By the time SSA checked with DHS it was too late to get a CA ID. Now Jeremy has to wait for the EAD. Just something to look out for. So close!!!!

SOOOOOO im a looking I want to get this aos started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble, Meri. Even in our area, the economy is suffering. People just aren't spending or hiring. It's not uncommon for the whole week to pass at Michaels and none of my floral arrangements have sold (which is bad for my job security). I keep asking for more hours (to cashier, work the sales floor, or anything), but still stuck at 10.5 a week... it's bad.

Andy and I are already talking about moving so he more job opportunities when his EAD comes. We're also going to file a request for a fee waiver since we can't afford the $1010 and desperately need him to be able to work; thank goodness we have my father to joint sponsor. A lady here on VJ told me her fee waiver request was approved when she was barely covering her monthly expenses and told me the kinds of documentation she sent in. I know it's a chance, but I have a hard time believing I'd be denied in this economy with the documentation I can show (student loan debt, lease showing rent, utility bills, my sad Michaels paychecks, etc).

Just a few more days and Andy will be here permanently. Most of the wedding arrangements are done now; I found a dress on Friday (for $150), ordered a cake, picked our ceremony music, etc. I think his jaw is going to drop when he sees me, because I've never worn anything like this dress before in my life. I just need to find an ivory veil with a ribbon edge. They wanted $69 for it at David's Bridal, which I knew is so overpriced. Michaels has one, but it is white!

Meri, do you know if either of the consignment shops in Lewiston have bridal accessories?

Getting close to that POE date and wedding day....you must be excited!! kicking.gif Andy's POE date is my Birthday...ugh 46!! I have to remember to change my profile.

Jeremy tried to get a CA ID but was unable because his I-94 expires in 60 days...sounds a lil bogus to me. Has anyone else had this problem?

We were told no ID card in Utah without a SSN. You can get a driver's license without it (SSN) though...strange.

Koakland...it was basically the same for Alexandra. They would give her the ID but it would expire when the I-94 expired....so it was pointless.

He got his ssn but because they messed up it took an extra 20+ days for him to get it. Too close to I94 expiring. bah! So I guess we have to wait for the EAD. Then It'll expire whenever the EAD expires. That's typically 1 year right? And then the GC is 2 yrs?

Yes the EAD is valid for a year and then needs to be reapplied, about 3 months prior to expiring, if the AOS is not yet approved. The GC is 2 years and you need to file to remove conditions 3 months prior to it expiring. If this is wrong someone please correct me... all of these dates and filings and such...ugh!!! sad.gif

Nothing new is going on with me. Jeremy and I got our NOA1s for AOS but it's not half as exciting as the NOA1s and 2s for the K1 process. Cool. cool. One other thing - Jeremy and I have just discovered the whole I693 civil surgeon transcription of records blah blah. So he has to get DS3025 transcribed to the I693 by a civil surgeon? We just started to explore this last night. We found a civil surgeon in San Francisco that does it for $40. Just want to make sure that we bring everything. The civil surgeon will need the DS3025 and his chest xray. Anything else?

You wouldn't need to take the x-ray to the CS to have DS3025 transcribed onto I-693. Just the DS3025. I sent mine off to Dr Arnold in Texas too, only cost $30.

There have been a few people approved AOS with only sending in the DS3025 rather than doing the I-693, although there is always a chance of a RFE!.

Jeremy went today and got it done. Only problem - the French doctor forgot to fill out a date on one of the vaccinations so Jeremy had to pay $85 to get it done again. I don't think that he cares though. He just wants to send the paperwork out ASAP. On our way smile.gif

I'm not sure, but it should say in the guides.

But, your birth certificate does not expire, so it will never matter how old it is.

that's what i think but apparently the french gov't wants a birth cert from me that has been issued within the last 6 mos. makes no sense to me but thats what they asked for. maybe jeremy just got the 2 confused...yeah i looked in the guides and it said nothing about it. just making sure tho.

He went to the other office and apparently someone at USCIS put him in the system as K4 instead of K1... But obviously they saw his K1 visa today in his pasport so SSA said they need to contact USCIS to fix it and then they'll issue the ssn or deny it, which I can't see happening but hey you never know! They said he should get an answer/ssn in 4 weeks tops. I guess it'll work out...

Booo!!! so of course the people at the SSA office are rude and incompetent. Jeremy went this morning to get a ssn and he was told that he needed an EAD to get a ssn. He told her that he didn't and showed proof of that but she refused to give him a ssn. After arguing with her for awhile he said forget it and said that he'd go to another office. So that's where he is now. I told him to ask to speak with a supervisor if he gets the same BS again. grrrr. maybe i'll have to take a half day next week to yell at people tongue.gif awesomeness!

any advice on what we should do if he is refused again today?
