According to Sebastian, the embassy shut down yesterday due to the weather and was rescheduling all appointments. Public transport was suspended and it took him 4 hours to get home from work (which ended up being cancelled anyhow). So yeah, I'd imagine it will be pretty difficult. sad.gif. Hopefully they've sorted it all out by now!

Although I can't say I find the U.K. snow storm exceptionally overwhelming. Take a look at my street, taken 2 days ago. This is a typical winter for us. Ugh.

Aww, Aubrey. Sorry you're having such a time with your family. I can sort of relate- my parents have never really been a big part of my life and are generally apathetic and skeptical about this whole scenario. My grandparents (who raised me) are supportive, but not really enthusiastic. I think they're all nervous because we're so young but it's still frustrating. Anyhow, didn't mean to detract at all from your situation, but just let you know that we all have our troubles with our families and I'm sorry you're going through all of this.

Tell Andy that we all wish him the very best on his interview! I admire his perseverance. I know he's been looking for a while but many people would've been pretty disheartened by now. It shows a lot about what kind of man you're going to marry- he doesn't give up!

When are all of you going to begin preparing the documents for AOS? I'm thinking we should start on it now (our legal wedding date is March 13th). Is it too soon to start? I think we have everything but the marriage certificate, and the cosponsor documents look pretty straight forward. What are you guys doing?

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Thanks so much everyone! Sebastian finally stopped worrying and got giddy about it. His flight is booked for the 7th of March! He first said he loved me on a Friday the 13th, proposed to me on a Friday the 13th, and guess when the 13th falls in the month of March....on a Friday! Guess when we're having our legal ceremony? smile.gif Horray!

Thank you! I think Sebastian is pretty dumbfounded it's so soon!

Poor guy already has enough going on with our Barcelona trip/nonlegal vow ceremony, my birthday (feb. 9th) and Valentine's Day. On top of that, he's moving out of London and back home this weekend and finishing up his last few weeks at work, plus trying to cram in seeing his friends. He has so many loose ends to tie up and is mega stressed. I'd better hear more excitement and less "uhhhhhhh....wow that's really soon" from him in the very near future! haha.

Best of luck to those of you who are still sorting things out!

We emailed them 4 times now, one of which to request his interview not be scheduled that week, and we've never received a response.

I called DOS again and I talked to a really, really nice woman. She said to go ahead and book the trip and just call the embassy to reschedule if it turns out the interview date clashes with our vacation. She said we may have to wait a few extra weeks for a rescheduled appointment, but that it is absolutely possible.

So...Barcelona here we come! I just have to wait for Sebastian to get home and tell him the sort-of-good-news so we can book things!

I am so tired of the immigration process.

Sebastian called the embassy today to see if they have his interview date. They don't. They told him they'll get back to him in 6-8 weeks with one.

From what I've read on here, that seems like a really arbitrary timeframe. Don't people get their packet 4 much sooner than that? We really want to book a trip to Spain together as a pre-wedding honeymoon kinda thing while I'm on spring break (yeah, a month from today) so if we're going- we need to book ASAP. At this point, so long as we get to take a great trip together, we're not too fussed if his interview IS in 6-8 weeks. But I'm reluctant to spend a few grand booking flights and hotels to Barcelona if they just *happen* to schedule his interview for that time.

I've emailed the embassy- no luck. Blah!

Phew! False alarm! I called back and they said they're showing the hard copy of our case is safely in London, and that packet 3 was mailed out last week. Still no word on them receiving packet 3, but I wasn't really expecting them to have put it in their system by today anyhow. We figured it'd be in by the end of January at the latest, and we'd get the interview date at the end of January/beginning of February. So far so good!

Glad to hear the embassy isn't totally ignoring me. I'd emailed them earlier in January and they responded within 24 hours, so I just assumed that was their normal response time. Guess not! Thanks for the quick response Rob&Dawn!

Congrats on the approval! And I vote option C, the kids will be overjoyed!

I'm extremely frustrated right now. I emailed the embassy last week to see when they were sending out packet 3. They never responded, even though I had the case # in the subject line. So I called DOS and they told us that packet 3 was sent out on the 14th. Great news, as Sebastian decided to mail it anyways on the 15th.

I emailed the embassy again, on Friday, to see if they'd received it. Forgot it was Martin Luther King Jr Day, plus I forgot to ask them a third question about scheduling the interview around our tentative trip to Spain, so I shot them a third email. Still, no response.

So just now I called DOS to see if packet 3 had been put into their system and they said London doesn't have the hard copy yet- just the electronic file!!! That doesn't make any sense at all, since don't they only send out packet 3 once the hard file has been received? NVC was supposed to mail the hard copy back in mid December. I was told by another DOS worker that the hard copy had been received. Why would it all of a sudden disappear from their system?! Aaaahhhhh!

I am so worked up. Who else can I call? sad.gif

Believe me, I was just kidding about working under the table. We'd never risk jeopardizing things after all this time. Again, thanks for your responses! I personally tend to side with you and think it's better safe than sorry even if an EAD isn't needed, but Sebastian seems quite convinced. I'll place the phone call this week and let you all know smile.gif.

Thanks for the response, Aubrey. And Shannon&Nick, your thing didn't show up for me sad.gif.

I personally haven't been looking into this too much (too busy with nursing school!) but Sebastian has. He seems quite sure that he can legally work without it, and posted his justification in the other thread. I'm still pretty skeptical but I plan on calling DOS sometime this week for some more information. I'll be sure to tell you guys what I find out.

Someone in the other thread said the EAD stamp from JFK is not even valid anymore- which confuses me even more. Finding an employer who is willing to hire him isn't really the issue, we know of a few people/friends of friends who have expressed an interest in hiring him for contract programming work for the 90 days until we file for the EAD during AOS, we just don't want to break any laws during the process! Working under the table IS illegal, right? hahaha.

Ugh. When will this eennnnnndddd? I just want to be married already.

Ok super interesting. I think you should post this on the AOS forum so we can get some input from other members. I'll have to look into this because that'd be awesome if we don't need an EAD.

So I just got this email from Sebastian. I haven't had time to do any research, but do any of you know what he's talking about?

"Subject: I may be able to work from the day I arrive in the USA!
https://secure.ssa.g.../lnx/0100203500

"The following sections list nonimmigrants, by alien class of admission codes, who are authorized to work in the U.S. without specific authorization from DHS. The person's I-94 will not have the DHS employment authorization stamp and the alien will generally not have an EAD."

K-1 Visa is on that list. Perhaps that means I will be able to work from day 1? I'm going to investigate this further.

How exciting! I love you xxx:"

Any ideas?

He can send a letter to USE asking for an interview before x date & after x date. Although based on this they will probably take the easy route and go for the latest date possible!
What intended travel date did he put on the checklist?

He put March 1st. I can't believe I'm actually posting about POSTPONING THE INTERVIEW. haha. But we think it's worth it to wait an extra week if that means we get to have a smashing honeymoon.

Glad to hear everyone is safe and healthy!

Quick question about the interview date. I started a new thread about this but am double posting a bit since I'm extremely anxious for an answer smile.gif. Sebastian and I are heavily considering taking a prewedding honeymoon (and possible personal exchange of vows without an officiant) in Barcelona from the end of February through the first week of March. We'd like to book things asap but don't want to risk it overlapping with his interview date, which he doesn't know yet. If we were to go ahead and book flights to Spain, and by some off chance his interview was scheduled during our trip, is it possible for him to request a later interview date? I know we could try and expedite but if that doesn't work we really don't want to jeopardize anything. The last interview date I heard from people on VJ was Feb. 2nd, so assuming they process our packet 3 within the next week we should be in the clear, but better safe than sorry!

Awww, Cham. I can't even imagine what it's like to be apart for that long. But you've come so far and you two obviously love each other very much to make the sacrifices you have made. The worst of it is over. You've done all you can possibly do to make sure the interview goes well, so try and relax in the meantime. If you're going to Napa Valley... why not elope there? There's no 24 hour waiting period like in New York. I highly recommend
enchantingelopements.com -- Used them for my previous marriage. It was the wrong guy, but the place is GORGEOUS, the minister is so sweet and funny, and the pictures are great. Lovely package and experience.

I'd love to, but Sebastian insists on flying through JFK so he can try and get his temporary work authorization. There aren't many flights from London to San Fransisco that stop through JFK and the ones that are cost nearly double. Sigh.

Are any of you planning a honeymoon yet? If so, where are you going?

We're talking about doing an NYC elopement followed by a few days in Napa Valley, or possibly doing the honeymoon before the wedding in Milan or Paris, then eloping in NYC. To save money on our awesome British photographer (who is willing to fly to NY, but at a cost), I'm half tempted to bring my dress to Paris/Milan and have a nonlegal ceremony with just us 2 and then do City Hall in NYC on the way back. I know I've heard that mock weddings can be frowned upon due to what does/doesn't legally constitute a marriage in that country- but it's not going to be religious so it can't be legally binding that way, we won't have an officiant and we won't have guests to witness it aside from the photographer. Plus, we'll be legally married within the week.

I think I'm just getting desperate at this point, since all our plans came to a hault. Do you guys think this is playing with fire?

They just did a revamp on their wedding bureau in NYC - they were showing it on TV and it looks pretty nice. Not a bad alternative. Here's the AP article on it. They've got little chapels and a shop where they sell some flowers and stuff. Not exactly your typical courthouse wedding. I wish I had something like this around here!

Here's to hoping it's not tacky! Haha. I saw this link about a City Hall elopement in California, and it pretty much embodies what I'm after.

Rob&Dawn,
Sebastian was a bit worried about sending in packet 3 before receiving it, even though I've been begging him to! He's just extra paranoid about jeopardizing things. Of course, I finally talked him into just sending it when they decided to mail us packet 3. hehe. We have the checklist, so he's going to fill everything out tonight, scan me copies so I can proofread them and hopefully mail it tomorrow. Thanks for the 6 week timeframe info, I wasn't aware of that. You should be getting your interview date any day now!

Those of you who are going through the London embassy, do you think it's okay to bank on a first-week-of-March arrival? AAAAH, EVERYTHING IS SO CLOSE AND I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!! (Despite the fact that I found out a few days ago that our potential venue is totally booked up, I cried a lot, and now our wedding plans have done a total 180. Hello all,
I don't have much time to post, as I fly back to the U.S. tomorrow (sad.gif) but I just wanted to post a quick update about Sebastian's medical this afternoon. We booked it despite not having packet 3 yet and everything went smoothly. The doctor wasn't very good at drawing blood though, and poor Sebastian has a huge bruise on his forearm. It's one more thing to check off of our list though.

We emailed the embassy earlier this week to find out about packet 3 and they still don't have the hard copy of our case. I'm pretty sure they're still catching up from the holidays and will have it by next week. Still keeping our fingers crossed for a first-week-of-March wedding. Wish I could make more personalized responses to everyone's posts! I'll play more catch up later smile.gif.

I wish you all the best! Keep your fingers crossed that the snow doesn't leave me stranded in an airport somewhere.

Ooooh, good luck JulietteDumont! I hope your approval is well on its way smile.gif.

When do you think you or your honey will be in the US?
We're really, really hoping for March. I'm a full time student and I get the first week of March off so that would be perfect for us to elope/spend a week somewhere nice.

Do you plan on having a traditional wedding, a civil ceremony or both?
A little bit of both. We're eloping to a local mansion (www.buhlmansion.com), but it will just be us. We're doing all we can to make it really special- writing our own vows, music, having a wine ceremony, I bought a gorgeous gown, we're booking a private dining room at a 5 star restaurant and we're hiring a professional photographer. But we want to celebrate with our families and friends too (his just can't fly out in March and it wasn't fair to have only my friends and family there on the wedding day) so we're throwing two big receptions, one in America and one in England. Our America one is planned for the week before Christmas of 2009 and the U.K. one will have to wait until after AOS is figured out.

What's your biggest worry about coming here/your SO coming here?
DRIVING. Sebastian doesn't have a license since he's always just used public transport and it's nearly impossible to walk anywhere where I live. So even if he's lucky enough to land a great job, I have no idea how he'll get there until we can afford another car. Plus, he's always driven on the other side of the road when he took driving lessons and I'm really leery about the whole situation. Like everyone else, we're also worried about him finding a job and money. I have zero income as a student and he's only been working full time for a year or so, so we don't have a great deal of savings. Thankfully our families are helping out, but still. Things will be tight, and it's a bit worrying.

My vacation to England is going REALLY well. I found lots of great wedding buys and it's been positively wonderful to spend so much quality time together. I don't know about you guys, but the distance was really beginning to strain things for us. But see how happy we are now? smile.gif smile.gif
