QUOTE (Hugglebuggles @ Dec 10 2009, 03:25 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I think you'd be surprised! My little sister had some issues with this a few years back. She was 12 years old at the time, and a "friend" and her were talking about a girl from school they didn't like, and I guess in passing my sister said something she shouldn't have about wanting to kick the girl, or smack her, or something stupid kids say when they're angry. Well long story short, my sisters "friend" and her got in a fight, she showed the girl they were talking about a transcript of the convo, the girls mom read it and called the cops, and they came down to the school and were going to arrest my sister. She shouldn't have said it, no, but she was a kid and didn't realize it could come back around. She had never really been in trouble her whole life, straight A's, the whole bit. In the end cooler heads prevailed and they let her off with a warning, but it goes to show you how things you put out on the internet can come back and haunt you! I know its a different situation, but I was really surprised by the cops willingness to take action.

I keep trying to make the kids I work with understand that A] Threats aren't funny, or joking, they're threats....and B] anything you say to anyone anywhere on the internet can later come back to haunt you. Our school (and my youth center) have a close-to-zero-tolerence rule for threats/threatening behavior - the only exception I can think of is when the kid is obviously joking with their friend/sibling/cousin/etc. - and even then they're warned about it.

I had a kid towards the begining of the school year who got mad at me and told me if he came in the next day and [insert whatever he was mad about that day] happened again, he was going to kick my @$$. I told him not to bother coming back the next day. When he came back at the start of the next week, he and I had a nice little chat about why it wasn't appropriate, what the consequences could've been (if he'd said that to a teacher he'd be suspended, if he said it to an employer he'd be fired, if he said it to a cop he'd have been in a WHOLE lot of trouble...) and that he was never to threaten anyone on our property again. I've caught him correcting other students since then, trying to keep them from getting kicked out too smile.gif

Tweens and teens don't understand that the internets are forever. They post all kinds of pictures/blogs/information about themselves that I wouldn't ever have dreamed of posting online. We've done a few online safety programs and I talk to kids as they post things that they shouldn't. I'm reasonably certain most of these kids' parents don't know that they have a myspace, and certainly don't check up on them if they do know. You should SEE what some of these kids post!

Thanks for the advice everyone!! One more question, whats a good site to look at apartments? I've been looking at like rent.com, apartment guide and apartment book. Any other good places?

Craigslist also has a for rent section...most of the apartments are of the non-corporate variety (at least in my city).

You could also look in the paper (or on craigslist?) or a list of upcoming church rummage sales. I know every year our church has a ton of furniture, and most of it is very nice. A lot of it is either from older folks who are moving out of their houses into assisted living or into a smaller place, or from young families who are "trading up" to bigger/nicer furniture. The church pre-screens things that are donated (at least, ours does!), so you won't wind up there to look at a recliner that happens to have doubled as a cat scratching post and litter box.

There's also some nice stuff that's come through our FreeCycle list lately, and I've had occasional luck on Craigslist. Salvation Army and Goodwill generally have a furniture store somewhere in the area, and they won't set out something that isn't "sellable".

If you're looking for somewhere commercial, Ikea is a good place to start. Sears also has a line of lower-priced "kit" furniture....I think Wal-Marts and Targets do as well.

Good luck! good.gif

Here's what we're leaning towards at the moment:

Writing a letting explaining that we were unsure of whether or not Spoom needed to register, and attach it with his selective service registration form. That way, if he still needs to be registered, the letter was sent before his 26th birthday (dated and postmarked), but if he wasn't they understand why he tried.

Any thoughts?

QUOTE (Varba @ Dec 15 2009, 12:38 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I keep telling my godkids they'd better behave because I know Santa (Awesome Aunt Scooter knows everyone, they've discovered). The twins (6 year old boys) started questioning this year whether I really knew Santa, or if I was just lying to them. We went to the tree-lighting ceremony here in town, and watched Santa arrive (by fire truck!) and then headed into the fire hall to tell him what they wanted. When we walked in the door, "Santa" turned around and said "ho ho ho, Merry Christmas Scooter!" (our "Santa" is the previous director of the youth center - the one who I replaced. I've known him my whole life). My godkids eyes got real wide as they stared up at me, jaws open. One whispered "You REALLY DO know Santa, don't you Aunt Scooter?!"

I love Christmas smile.gif

CanadaHappy Wedding Day, Spoom and ScooterMac!
Thanks everyone!!!

We haven't really been online since the wedding - we got a cabin in Hocking Hills, OH for a week with no cell reception, phone line, or internets. It did, however, have a freaking amazing jacuzzi and a fireplace. Good stuff :)

The wedding was perfect. The day was warmer than usual for the area, sunny with just a few clouds and a pretty blue sky. My bridesmaids all got along really well, and my hairdresser told us we were the most interesting group she'd spoken with in awhile, and took some off our bill. The lady that did my nails did them for free :) The florist did an amazing job with the flowers at the church - very simple and elegant, but they looked great (and my flowers were beautiful). Our pastor cried a few times, and so did most of our friends (my dad bawled like a little girl ), as did the choir. We had 200-210 people at the wedding and reception, and it was great to have all the people who cared about us there with us to celebrate.

The reception was really pretty - I have pictures of the centerpieces I'll have to put up later. Our DJ did a great job balancing music we actually wanted to hear and my "politely drunk" (as my parents put it) friends' requests. The food and the cake were both excellent, and I loved getting to dance with Spoom.

I'll put up more pictures soon - still waiting for the photographer to get our formal ones online - but in the meantime, please enjoy this unstaged shot of my hubby and I waiting for our photographer to tell us what to do.

CanadaUS Health Fare

The pledge is something that is decided on individual states whether to use it or not.

This is a bit off topic, but...I think there are only about 7 states in the US who don't require schools to have students say the pledge. The other 7 have the option to have students say it or not. Only about 6 states require students to say the pledge.

My school didn't give students an option. We had a kid in our homeroom in high school who wound up getting suspended for not saying the pledge.

Find a doctor willing to help you better then who also will let you make payments (what you can).

There are options out there if you're willing to look for them.

Granted, every state in the union is different on what you can find out there, but usually if you look there's options.

One thing that we have here is for those who cannot qualify for medicaid and fall in the 'middle' on of the health groups specifically helps those people out. Any co-pays are minimal and you're basically 'covered' without having to worry about extra costs. Check your city, ask local hospitals especially public ones if they have any 'extra care' options for those in the middle income bracket.

I've looked for something like that and haven't been able to find anything. There was one option, but I make about $2000 a year too much to qualify for that help. The doctors (under my health care plan, anyway) who allow patients to pay after the visit still require that payment in ONE payment, and right after the visit.

My personal situation wasn't even the point, more the ridiculous cost of an individual healthcare plan. My rates, deductible, etc. would be the same no matter what I weighed. For a healthy person to pay nearly $4000 a year just to get coverage, plus have a $3000 deductible on top of it, is ridiculous.

Which is something I'm trying to do. As I said, I've already lost over 100lbs, and I'm continuing to lose weight. Also, I should note, the cost of my insurance has nothing to do with my weight - that's what they charge per month, same deductible, to someone who was a stick figure. It's just a ridiculous amount of money.

That said, my doctor is concered that I have a problem with my thyroid which is causing a lot of my issues. My mother had thyroid cancer and was going through treatments while pregnant with me. He wants me to get my thyoid tested, but I can't afford to have the tests done. See what I mean?

Is it also amusing that I work 12 hour days 5 days a week and 2-3hrs the other two days of the week, and I can barely afford health insurance? And that's just health insurance for me. My "primary" job doesn't offer health insurance, and my "secondary" job won't add me on their plan because I'm not full time. I make too much to qualify for medicaid or gov't assistance. (And no, we don't have a 60" plasma screen TV).

My health insurance costs about $320/month. I have a $3000 deductible. Going to the doctor for *anything* costs me at least $50-$75. It costs more if it involves bloodwork (not covered), shots, etc. My perscription (single) costs over $60/month. This is the --absolute best deal-- I could get on health insurance. I was denied by 4 different healthcare companies in the course of a year due to not meeting their "height/weight ratio requirements", even though I had a complete physical (at my own expense) and a letter from my doctor with the results, the notation that I'd already lost over 100lbs and was on a weight management program, and that I had no pre-existing conditions or co-morbitities.

But yeah, there's nothing wrong with the US health care system. I like having to cough up a huge chunk of money each month to not be able to afford going to the doctor.

CanadaSo foxy loxy, how do you like your turkey lurkey?
I'm going to visit Spoom's family for my first Thanksgiving with them. I was supposed to go last year, but it was less than a week after I started my new job, and my board of directors wasn't thrilled with the idea. This year, there's no school on that date, so I can close the youth center with no issues biggrin.gif

It will also be his first Thanksgiving here with my family (I think his finals/midterms were last year during our Thanksgiving). Fortunately, I live in the apartment above my Grandparents' (who host Thanksgiving every year)....I get the feeling Spoom will be doing a lot of "helping" in the kitchen. happy.gif

CanadaSSN

If you urgently need it (and for K-1 purposes I don't know why you would so desperately need one immediately), you could try to call the office and they could look it up

Just for the record....not all offices will give you the SSN over the phone. The Erie, PA office and many others require you to come to the office in person, with ID, before they'll give you your number. I can't imagine any clerk giving you the number over the phone - there's no way to verify your identity.

Your office may have done it, but others should be prepared to make that second trip if they need the number immediately, just in case (though, in most cases, you won't need the number immediately).

Didn't have time to read all the posts, so someone may have already answered this.

I think there was some discussion in the waivers section at www.immigrate2us.net - that site kind of makes a specialty out of waivers.

Be aware that a waiver will likely add a lot of additional time away from your loved one.
