Picture is of my car with less than an hour of snow resting on it. It's really coming down steady out there!

Oh wow. That's beautiful. I picture a cold wind with that, though. lol

You got that right! The wind can get pretty chilly coming off the lake - in the winter, it's our own personal snow machine smile.gif That's lake Erie (about a mile from my house), and we get TONS of lake-effect snow.

I have experienced the pleasure of Erie, PA's lake-effect snow on a number of occasions. lol

It's a bit of a pain (especially for those who aren't used to driving in white-out conditions!), but I LOVE our winters. We're close to several ski/snowboarding/tubing hills, and the Peninsula is beautiful in the winter. I love the ice dunes that form just off-shore (just don't try to walk on them! laughing.gif)

CanadaEstablishing credit score in US for Canadians

I got really lucky; our mortgage broker accepted my (great) Canadian credit history at face value, while I've never had so much as a US credit card. I figure the mortgage should be good for building US credit.

Did I mention we bought a house? We bought a house. :)

You should also mention that other mortgage brokers you spoke to were completely flabbergasted by what to do with your (Canadian) credit and offered to give us a loan based on my income/credit alone (which wasn't going to get us anywhere). Our realtor was great at helping us find a mortgage company who would work with our situation.

Tonight....no clue. Work from 7am-7pm, then a meeting til whenever our service agreement for the youth center is renewed. Hopefully I'll be in bed before midnight!

Hey guys, if you all get a chance, please vote for my youth center in the refresh everything contest (http://www.refreshev...m/nwyouthcenter or text 102945 to 73774). We run on ~40K/yr and provide services to 400+ kids in grades K-12. I'll give more details if anyone wants them, please just ask. We're going to be adding a quiet study area (have you ever tried to do homework with 50 kids running around you?), making a bathroom handicap accessible, adding a summer learning program for middle/high school age group, and a whooole bunch of other stuff.

Sorry if this isn't kosher to post this here - I tried to ask a mod yesterday, but didn't get a response :)

Please please please please vote if you're in the US (or get your sweetie to vote, if they're the USC!). We're in 84th place and need to get into the top 10.

Oh, and the kids get to dye my hair whatever color(s) they want if we win. I promise pictureeeeesssss!

When we got there, the bar was pretty quiet (hockey game was still going) but by the time we left, it was PACKED. At one point, we could see a line of girls wound 'round the bar waiting to get into the bathroom. After the line subsided a bit, my friend and I hopped in line and were patiently waiting.....when some fairly large, very drunk girl shoved past us. CanadaDon't you love it when...
......when begging for volunteers to help with ANYTHING at the youth center finally pays off, even for a day. I had a retired couple show up yesterday at opening with a whole bunch of food, and they proceeded to stay and clean for an hour or so. They're coming back on Saturday, which is our work day to finish the new basketball court and clean the place well with the kids not there. I also had a mom stop by for a couple hours to help supervise the kids and help me clean (cleaning is a large part of working with teens, I've found ).

It wasn't an easy day, but it would've been a hell of a lot harder without help. Now, if I can just start getting people to come on a consistent basis.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionI-751 additional evidence requested. What to send
Did any of the people who are writing the letters send or give you holiday cards and do you have the envelopes from those cards, addressed to you both? Maybe you could try sending copies of the cards and the accompanying envelope with the affadavit letters.
The cellphone brings up another suggestion. If your bill comes with an itemization that shows the numbers called and calls received, start going through it. Circle or highlight the calls you made to each other's cell phones and the calls from each cell phone to your home phone.

Good Luck!

Hello,
Thank you everybody for giving an great advise.

My letter is not yellow one, it`s blue one that requests more evidence to support the petition.
So, I guess the documents I submitted was not enough to get approved.

I submitted 2years Tax return transcript, joint checking account statement, joint health insurance card, marriage certificate, State ID showing same address, cellphone bill address to both our name, flight tickets for our trips, Pictures.

I didnt send the affidavit letter because I didnt think that it was that important that time, but I guess actually they are.
My husaband is going to have his mother and sister and friend write them for us.

As for another evidence, I will ask my landlord to write a letter to prove that we live together as you sujested.
Also, we have a dog together, so I will send the pictures of us three too.

We lived together even before we got married, so we dont relly have joint utility bill other than cellphone,
It`s like homephone bill is on my name, cable and electricity are on my husband`s name, so as for the utility bill I dont have anything else to send.

So, I will resubmit copies of the documents I have already submitted plus affidavit letters and letters from landlord, this year`s tax return, and lots of photos.
I hope they are enough.

BTW, In the RFE letter, it stated the example of documents that I can submit, such as tax return, bills, etc. then, there is this clause "affdavits should be supported, if possible, by one or more types of documentary evidence listed above"
Would you please somebody explain to me what that means? Does that mean it has to be notarized? or they also have to submit tax return or some sort?
I thought all they have to do is write a letter and have them notarized, but now I am really confused.

Thank you again.

Removing Conditions on Residency General Discussionhow long can you be abroad?
i thought i would share what i found online after a little bit of searching. does anyone have anything to add to this? any experience with traveling abroad for a while?

The primary rule surrounding Green Cards is that you lose it if you give up your US residence. So in theory, if you, for example, show up with a moving van on the border to Canada or Mexico, there is a chance that a BCBP officer who notices this can question you and possibly revoke your Green Card right away.

The more common criterion, though, is time based. There are three important time limits to know about.

* If you are absent for less than six months, you will rarely have a problem. It is BCBP's job to prove that you abandoned your residency. Absent that, you are considered to never really have left.
* If you are absent for more than six months but less than a year, the burden of proof reverses. It becomes your job to prove that you are still a permanent resident. This is based on the concept that after six months, you have to be readmitted and have to prove that you are still admissible. As a side note, after an absence of more than six months, the various criteria for admissibility apply again, too. For instance, if you in the meantime had become inadmissible, say through an HIV infection, you might have a problem.
* If you are absent for more than a year, your Green Card will be considered almost automatically abandoned. Once that happened, there is usually no recourse. However, if through some miracle the immigration officer didn't ask you how long you have been out of the USA when you return, then you may be in luck and able to keep your Green Card after all. You should in this case not leave the USA for a very long time, and make it your bona fide residence again.

Removing Conditions on Residency General Discussionhow long can you be abroad?
my husband and i are getting seperated (no divorce just yet). i recieved my 2 year green card two months ago. not sure if i will be getting my 10 year card in two years, it really depends on how things go from here.

but for now, i am wondering how long i could go back to canada right now without affecting my status in the US? would i be able to go back to canada and work for a couple months, or would that look really bad? are there specific laws about that?

any advice would be much appreciated.

I know we are suppose to show evidence from all years...as we are simple people, living in a tiny town in
in the country side, we don't have mortgage, loans or car title jointly, or anything fancy....s
o I hope we did just fine, and that the documents we sent are enough proof.
It would be easier if they visited us to see that we are married :

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionLast name change after Green card
when I got married, I changed my name too...

I have my husbands last name...since then. My SS, all my papers are married name, and
in the petition where they ask for alias , I always put my maiden name...so
they can link one to the other.

Now, I think...that is funny, because my passport is in my maiden name.....and
my US ID's are all married name...It is a bit confusing , I wonder how people track back. Oh well.

this is not a problem anyway.

Monica

She changed her last name to yours. That seems like it would be a point in your favor demonstrating that you have a legitimate relationship.

I would make sure when you reference the name change that you include your marriage cert, which would be the document that "links" her maiden name to her married name. I know you already submitted this, but it helps to have it right there.

Good luck!

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionMe and wife planning on going to vacation to Germany while I-751 form is processing
Hi there

Maybe you can travel before you file the petition...

one thing I know...once you send in the petition...you'd better be home...

I filled my 751 a week ago, wich was like 1 month and 10 days before the expiration date...

and I already got one notice, and I'm waiting for more

Just remember that, things with the immigration are very tough...I mean, if you fail to do something
you can get the card denied very easily...

So this is my opinion, I think, this is the final step for me, as well as for your wife...So, I would
avoid anything that could jeppardize the process...

Unless you are sure you can come back to US in time to prepare and send out the 751,
I would suggest you stay here.

my two cents
Meredith

Hi all,

I'm a US citizen and my wife (who is from India) has been here for nearly 2 years as a conditional permanent resident. We both are getting ready to file the I-751 form to remove the conditions on her permanent residence sometime next month. Her conditional permanent resident card will expire in May. We both want to go to Germany to visit some of my own relatives that are there and of course see Europe. Me being a US citizen, I can go to Germany without any visa requirements, however, for my wife I have to get her a tourist visa to Germany, which we can get sponsorship for from my relatives in Germany. We are thinking about going to Germany in end of April/early May and coming back right before her conditional permanent resident card expires and after applying for the I-751 and starting that whole process. Will it be an issue for her to go overseas and can that affect her getting her final 10 year green card after the I-751 processes?

Any help on this will be appreciated - just trying to decide whether if its worth going on vacation to visit relatives in Germany at this time or not or should I wait out till she gets her 10-year green card and then plan my vacation (which could be more than a year from now).

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionI-751 my first notice from VA!
Hi
they received my papers on the 24th,
and today I got the receipt they cashed the money...
Actually I sent one fee 275 , the new fee.

one single western union money order...and the receipt was for both biometrics and application..I noticed one fee had a " manual receipt" words by it...

so I don't know ...maybe when people send two different checks, they have to process two receipts, and god knows where each one comes from...

so now, basically I am on waiting mode...for the biometrics...

May I ask when you sent in your I-751 to Vermont Service Center? I sent mine on Dec. 7th, it was received at the VSC on Dec. 9th, the check was cashed on Dec. 14th...but I've yet to hear a single thing.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionTaxes and Removing Conditions...
I don't know much about taxes,
nor does my husband. who is an american citizen

but this is my own experience....

My husband has used the same accountant guy for several years...
so, when I got in the US, and after we got married , after I got my SS,
it was time for taxes, and
we went to see this accoutant

he did our tax jointly, and as I didn't earn any income, in the tax paper just have me as
housewife....I didn't work that year.

So that is how the accountant does ours to this day.

The only difference is that last year I was working from home, so this time he also declared my income I guess, and
the accoutant registered a sole proprietorship in my name, so besides taxes, I also
pay estimated taxes...

so, I don't know...One thing I don't feel like learning is how to fill taxes, or estimated taxes...

that's my experience.

Hi YuAndDan and Everyone Else,

Lol...I have thought about joint filing with my spouse, but there's one problem: my spouse doesn't file taxes, because of their situation (and yes, it's legal, but I can't get into the specifics of it here on VJ). So am I then to file my own taxes? Ugggh...Help....

Ant

Joint filing with spouse?

Umm the only reason why it would be legally correct to not file taxes is if your spouse made less than the minimum filing requirements...

Is this the case for you?... it is pretty rare that one does not have to file taxes...

Removing Conditions on Residency General Discussionhow often are people called for interviews on I-751
I had an interview for my AOS, to get the greencard,
and I remember I took more evidences with me...But at the time the interview was like 10 minutes
it was so quick...But I guess it is pretty common for AOS>

I had to go down all the way to Philadelphia for that. The interview lasted like 5 to 10 minutes.

This time I put a lot of evidences, everything that is required and even more...

I sure hope I'm not selected for an interview...

Meredith

yep a couple from Puerto Rico recently got called for an I-751 interview....forget his name though
