I ate at the restaurant that they have at Azhar Park (seemed like it was at the top of the hill) . . . at night, so I didn't see the rest of the park, but the food was good.

I love going to these kinds of parks at night. They have quite a few right along the nile in downtown, and you can stroll along hand in hand - very romantic. There are guys selling flowers outside, and people inside who will bring you hot tea or soda. It's perfect for a late night Cairo date.

I looked for a picture of some of these waterfront parks, but all I could find was this interesting paper on the privatization of the Cairo waterfront.

Sound and Lights show at the Pyramids - we went to this when my family was in Egypt. Before we left, we were watching "The Spy who Loved Me," the James Bond picture that is partly in Egypt. My favorite street vendors are the sweets carts. We had the best one on the street near our first apartment. We loved it so much that we'd travel all the way from dokki to giza just to get some sweets from him, even though there were dozens of sweet shops in dokki.

Where has anyone expressed a hatred of Israel in this thread?

I would request, as the OP, that any Israel/Palestine debate be moved to it's own thread. Shokran! (thanks!)

The pyramids at Giza. I think most people have the impression that they're off in the middle of the desert, and you have to ride camels to get to them, but Giza (suburb/twin city of Cairo) butts up right next to them. Traditionally, one slaughters a sheep for Eid al Adha, the next Eid, and not Eid al Fitr. Maybe it's a tradition in Morocco though? We usually do it through Islamic Relief, and it's never over $200, even in the countries where animals are most expensive (usually Palestine and Bosnia if I remember correctly).

One thing he should be worrying about right now is Zakat al Fitr, that needs to be paid before the Eid prayer.

Amen!

I have seen all kinds of news reports for people taking off for the Rosh Hashanah, even on Capitol Hill but nothing about Eid (even though there is a Muslim conngressman from MN). All the news channels were scrolling about Rosh Hashanah, not a peep about Eid.

And one from Indiana!

The representative from the great state of Minnesota celebrated Eid at our home masjid, where once again I got all fan girl and couldn't strike up the nerve to say anything beyond giving him salaams blush.gif

Any organization that has the $$$ can create special days at 6 flag theme parks. Looks like 6 flags in St. Louis hosted a christian music festival this summer. I bet if I did more than a cursory 5 second google search, I'd find more.

OMGosh, those evil physics students, clogging up the park with their accelerometers and altimeters. They're shoving physics down our throats! (btw, physics day was the best day of my high school career. Lots and lots of fun hanging around with lots and lots of geeks).

Wow Rahma, 3 years!!! How have you seen him change in those 3 years? Any good suggestions on those of us with spouses here only a few months or so? Sometimes my husband gets upset about how things are done here and how he thinks us Americans let others rule how we discipline our kids and we put to much into our animals, etc...etc....etc.!!

We haven't found a magic formula yet, just lots and lots of patience.

I really should have written down all the things not to do, but alas, I've blocked them all out of my mind laughing.gif

The husband doesn't understand our animal obesession either. inshaAllah we'll be adopting a kitty soon, and I'm trying to tell him what I've learned from Think Like a Cat. Unfortunately, sometimes it can be like talking to a wall no0pb.gif

Middle East and North AfricaWhat?!?! No Friday thread yet???
3 years ago today the husband landed in the US. I'm trying to think of what to get him. I think I'll just go to target and find something cheezy with an american flag on it.

This is really a busy time of year for presents. It's my birthday, his anniversary of coming to the US, our anniversary, and then his birthday. Thank goodness Eid is moving up, so in a few years it will be far enough in front not to be in the huge present crush.

Middle East and North AfricaEid Moubarak!
Our local masjid was actually early for once. Usually they start the prayer half an hour late, so we rolled up 5 minutes before it was scheduled to start. Um, why are they giving the khutbah before the prayer? Oh, they prayed at 8, instead of 8:30 like they were suppose to. Thanks mad.gif

Alhamdulilah, I knew of another masjid that was praying yesterday. Unfortunately, they were across town, it was rush hour, and we had half an hour to get there. Alhamdulilah, made it just in time for the prayer and had a good ol fashion american breakfast afterwards with halal bacon, sausage, hash browns and fried chicken. Mmm mmm mmm.

Middle East and North AfricaEid Moubarak!
2 online eid events this Sunday!

On the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas, who said : One day I was behind the prophet and he said to me:

“Young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]: Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, ask of Allah; if you seek help, seek help of Allah. Know that if the Nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would harm you only with something Allah had already prescribed for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”
SunniPath is excited to announce a free live event on the 5th October, 2pm GMT with Ustadha Zaynab Ansari.

The event will be an explanation of this hadith focusing on the Prophet’s (Allah bless him and give him peace):
Great concern for young people
His ability to offer encouragement for proper action
How to be successful as a Muslim
The importance of total reliance on Allah Ta’ala and
How the hadith is a balm for hearts in troubled times
