CanadaMedical exam cost in Canada
Also, some VJ'ers from Canada have been able to have their private insurance cover all or part of the medical, ir you have private insurance :)

OHIP doesn't cover the medical - you will have to cover the costs yourself. If you or your children require any immunizations go to your own doctor and have them done before the medical as they probably will be covered by OHIP. Obtain proof of the immunizations and bring it with you to the medicals. You will need medicals for the three of you. Make sure you get a copy of the vaccination worksheet from the panel physician who does the medicals. There are a number of doctors in Ontario who are authorized to do the medical - choose the one that is closest to you or the one who gives you the best price - the price does vary from doctor to doctor. The Consulate will enclose a list of authorized panel physicians when it sends you the package of forms and information you need.

CanadaHello from new member Ant
It happens, we don't need to resent other people just because it was easier for them. Welcome Ant.

Canadafavorite things you'll miss from canada
I definitely don't say eh, but my husband does (grew up in suburb of Toronto) and my parents do (vancouver island)... I always used to think it was a rural thing, but now I don't know.
The one person I've met who says it more than anyone else is from a small town in Alberta :)

No one says 'ay' at the end of each sentence. It's not used like the American 'eh', to indicate a question, but for the life of me I can't figure out how it works. It's a very strange usage, but in any case, the Canadian accent out west sounds like someone in Wyoming or Colorado and there's not a lot of 'eh's'.'

CanadaWhat to do next?
Do you have a NOA1 for your I130? I'm not sure how it worked with DCF, because you wouldn't be able to file a I129F without it.

I am really really sorry this is happening to you.

Are you sure that your consulate is Montreal for a K3 - I noticed that you had your local office listed as Calgary - if that's true the consulate with jurisdiction would be Vancouver for the K3 (it's different than for the IR1).

If the I130 is basically starting over again, you would basically be in the same position of anyone else at the beginning deciding whether to file the I129F. It is still often faster (and through vancouver significantly faster) - the biggest difference being that entering on the K3 one can't work for about 3 months.

At this point it might be worth it still, I really hope that you get special treatment at USCIS it's so frustrating when things like this happen :(

CanadaCurious about when to file AOS
You can file right away - but I've heard that it's recommended to file for the EAD first then apply for the AOS because your EAD will last longer based on the K3 status than it would based on the AOS application itself.

Granted I've had a few glasses of wine, so you may want to hear some other advice :) I definitely know that you can file right away though :)

We were going to worry about all this after I got back to the US, but I am wondering- If I go back on the K3, can we file the AOS right away? Or do we have to wait a certain amount of time?

CanadaEmployment Question
As fwaguy said, the son will have to apply for work authorization. Another piece of advice, it is best for your fiancee (then wife) to submit the I765 along with her adjustment of status papers, if the I765 is submitted separately first, the employment authorization will expire at the same time as her original I94 (90 days) and will be a waste.

Good luck.

CanadaDS230 for IR/CR1 question
hello all :)

I'm almost ready to submit my DS230, it's quite exciting - and nerve wracking!

Anyway, I posted this in the IR/CR1 forum, and was told I should post it here :)

CanadaThings to do to make my Canadian feel at home.
Lobster sandwiches, never heard of those at McDonalds!

I've found frozen perogies at Wal Mart and Kroger in Kentucky, they're not bad... not the same as the original, but good for a fix :)

and yet McDonalds in the US doesn't have lobster sandwiches, but McDonalds in the Maritimes does. And you can get Poutine in McDonalds in Canada, not in the US. Fast food menus are regional. Even world wide chains.

I used to work for Domino's here in NC, and the menus here are different than from where my Mum lives just outside of Toronto in Whitby. There's not a single "special" pizza on their menu that has less than 4 toppings. The menu from NC to Wisconsin is even different (having taken a tour of several WI and MN franchises last year).

Just depends where you go. In Regina there's more Ukranian population and food. Perogies are a staple. Here in Morganton NC, I can't find a perogie to save my life! And I'm too bloody lazy ot make my own from scratch. ;) I miss perogies!

CanadaThings to do to make my Canadian feel at home.
I have totally developed a taste for mexican food since moving down here! It's funny since my first job ever was in the kitchen of a cali-mexican restaurant in vancouver... there are way better mexican restaurants in the u.s. :) I couldn't even name one in Toronto!

CanadaHealth Insurance?
Since this post popped up, I thought I would add.. I was looking on ehealthinsurance.com. It was helpful in comparing plans and some the plans seemed really reasonable (like 170 + 2500 deductible). I didn't actually sign up yet, so I can't promise that the quote will match the final price :)

CanadaTravel Restrictions after married
Definitely be carefly planning the honeymoon - Hawaii is okay if you have a direct flight - but I believe that almost any cruise is considered leaving the U.S. because foreign registered cruise ships are considered foreign land.

Good luck with everything :)

CanadaK3-CR1 Debate
I pretty much ignore anything border guards or the mis-information 1-800 line tell me if it contradicts what I know.

I had a border official tell me that I could apply for a K1 for my husband before I was naturalized as a U.S. citizen.

A lot of them don't know what they are talking about, some of them do, but it won't benefit me in arguing with them, so I just thanked them for the advice :)

CanadaTravellers Face 2 month wait for passports
Michael needed one for this whole process, so he went back in December. It only took a few weeks... the worst thing now is that because of all the publicity, it seems like more people are applying now just because they're panicking. Sort of like a bank run on the post office. But it's hard to feel sorry for people who've had a vacation planned for months.

CanadaUsing James Shortcuts?
You can't use the shortcuts for the K3, because there aren't any :) The I129F is only at the NVC for a week or so, then it is forwarded to Vancouver or Montreal where it is processed.

Have you had any action on your I129F?

Is using James Shortcuts beneficial for the K3 process?

It is my understanding that a K3 moves quicker through the NVC. Or is James Shortcuts better to use for the CR1?

CanadaGift Certificate Help
There are Babies R Us in Canada, maybe you could get a certificate through them? Also some North America chains will accept gift cards purchased in the U.S., maybe you can call & check :)

I also just checked Pottery Barn Kids - but the gift cards are only good in the country of purchase.

Is she not registered online?

Hi all,
My girlfriend recently had a baby and I want to surprise he and send a gift certificate. she lives in Toronto, Ontario (T-Dot). I am not sure what stores are good for buying baby things in that area of Canada. Any suggestions on stores that I could get a cert. from? If I purchase a certificate here can it be used in Canada....I'm so confuzzled...pls help?

CanadaVisting Husband While Waiting for K3
I wasn't sure if you've visited since you were denied entry, but if not, my understanding is that you MUST tell them upon your next crossing that you were denied the last time. This might make it a little more difficult to go for an extended visit.

Good luck!

CanadaTimely Processing of K3 Applicants
They aren't usually, it just seems to happen to some people... try not to worry :)

We knew we were still being touched after the K-3 was approved because of the dates changing on the USCIS case status page. case

You mean that Consular touches are posted on the "Case Status" section of the USCIS website? In that case, there's been nothing since NOA2 . . . :(

CanadaNVC IVR
Darryl - because you filed DCF, your case was never at the NVC, so it makes sense that they have no record of it. I guess you could try calling USCIS since I believe that's where DCF petitions were sent back to. Good luck!

I called the NVC (603-334-0700) spoke with an operator - they said they had nothing on file for our case #....We have been assigned a case # months back MTLXXXXXXXX - is this normal that they wouldn't have any reference of our case #?

Has anyone else seen this? Any thoughts on where else to check?

Thanks

Darryl
