US Citizenship General DiscussionWhen an Imigration Officer seems confused
It doesn't matter that you didn't apply in three years... your original status in the U.S. was based on your relationship to your ex-husband and if that was fraudulent it doesn't matter how long you waited to apply (not saying that it was fraudulent!)

Get them whatever you can and write a statement explaining your position and what happened to the marriage. Maybe someone would be willing to swear in an affidavit as to the real nature of your old relationship.

Good luck!

CanadaMontreal Interviews
Has no one received an appointment since this thread was started? Oh I hope they get a move on! Michael and I have already been living apart for more than a year - I know that's not a lot longer than many people, but seriously, a year! Anyway, I probably shouldn't be paying attention to how long it will take to get an interview at the consulate, BUT everything else seems to be moving more quickly, and it seems like the interview will be the thing we have to wait for the longest.

Thanks for letting me vent, and I really hope some people get their interviews scheduled soon!

CanadaOT: Fun place to eat in Toronto
I second, Peter Pan is great... in the Yonge & Eglinton area one of my husband and my absolute favourites is Grano, it is an Excellent Italian place. I love the Queen Mother, but it's not so much "romantic'.

Where in Toronto will you be staying? There are hundreds of fantastic restaurants! If you give me a sense of where you will be and how familiar you are with the city, I'd love to make some reccommendations.
Off the top of my head -
Rodney's Oyster Bar - if you like oysters;
Peter Pan - down on Queen St. W.;
Marche - Yonge St - south of King;
Oliver and Bonnacini - Bayview and Sheppard;
Salad King - FANTASTIC Thai food at Yonge and Dundas;
The Old Spaghetti Factory - pasta house with a great steak on the menu and beautiful decor - there is a merry-g0-round right in the middle of the restaurant (does not run though)
and the Potato Club in the entertainment district.
Believe it or not, but the name of my favourite restaurant in Toronto has escaped me - it's at Yonge and Eglinton though, which is uptown. I'll post it when I remember it.
As another poster said - Canoe is great but I've only ever had lunch there.

Happy eating!

Monique

CanadaChanging date of interview
I found a price on kayak.com from toronto to montreal, nov.14th to 17th for $312. I know it's still a fair bit, I only wish I had this dilemma :(

But good luck whatever you do!!!

CanadaChanging date of interview
Where is she coming from? I'm pretty good at finding internet deals if you want me to have a look - I'm surprised it would cost that much from almost anywhere in Canada. Although I guess it is pretty last minute.

I just couldn't imagine risking waiting another 2 or 3 months to get another interview. But maybe someone has successfully done this, I'm sure there are lots of people hear that would be quite happy to take her interview appointment :)

As for accomodations, hotwire.com is really good, and there is also a youth hostel with private rooms. It is very clean and safe, and that's where my family & I stayed when we went to Montreal for our Green Card interview.

Hello everyone. I was wondering what people's experience was with changing an interview date in Montreal. We have the 15th of this month, which is great, except my fiancee is having a hard time arranging transportation. The train isn't a whole lot cheaper than a plane, plus cost of housing/transportation in Montreal. She figures it's close to $1000 and that's money we can't really afford to spend. Has anyone changed their date before and if so, how accomodating is the consulate. Will she hear right away, or go back into the pool? Thanks!

CanadaMontreal interview
Wow, you guys have had a long journey! Congratulations on finally being together :)

Here is our shortened version. Went on a family vacation for Christmas '05. Did not have an AP(do not recommend trying that), and were denied re-entry to the U.S. Lost all beneficiary paperwork,(considered abandoned), petitioners still good, just not approved at that time.(see timeline below). FFWD. Got our appointment date for 1 NOV 2006. We arrived at the consulate at about 7:45, and I must say the lady guard there impressed us all. She came , spoke French to the first guy without missing a beat, and said his bag was not allowed, spoke French to the lady, then without missing a beat spoke english to us (without speaking French first), then immediately asked the guy behind us if he had his $100.00. It was like she studied everybody before they got there. Got through security, went downstairs to the waiting room, we were not first, but everyone else chose seats everywhere except close the elevator. The guard came and opened the elevator, and we were the first and straight back we went, faced the far door, everyone climbed in and faced forward. Guess they didn’t have VJ. Elevator opened, went left, then left and straight to window 14. Finally it opened, got our number and proceeded to hurry-up and wait. Ding, ding, ding, all the a’s were getting ordered up, then ding, C-1, so off we went. Met the man I the back, through the 1” thick glass. He asked if they had ever been denied entry, so we said yes, explained why, Then he explained to us why we could not entry the way we entered. That someone at the border was finally doing their job. This was not sitting well with my wife, but she maintained. Then he passed us on. Went back and waited again. Ding, C-1 , so off to the little room for prints, how did you meet, and a yellow slip to re-enter the next day to pick up thier passports with the visas inserted. Left the next day, entered at 1000 Island Bridge, the CBP here were very nice, and as slow as they were nice. But and hour later and an explanation of how things would work, we were off and running. Made it home Saturday the 4th. What a relief for everyone to be back together in our home again.

Thank you to everyone and their kind words, encouragement, and insight. I hope everyone gets through this quickly, the waiting is the hardest part.

CanadaBaby's Citizenship
Emily, you won't have to apply for Canadian citizenship when the baby is born - just by being your child it will automatically have Canadian citizenship no matter where it is born. You just need to need to apply for a certificate to prove it :)

I know this for sure, my sister (dual u.s./canadian) just had her first child in September in San Diego, and this is what she did. My little dual citizen neice :)

CanadaMy Canadian Car registered in US
In Kentucky there is a personal property tax levied on the value of your car every year (Ridiculous! I know!) And that tax is part of your registration renewal fee you pay every year.

CanadaPassport photos "too old"???
I believe that all Canadian passport photos are dated. I personally don't think it's worth saving a few dollars when it could give an excuse to some official somewhere to cause delay if they decide to be nitpicky.

Yes mine were always dated as well, I can't imagine a month old is bad, I had an original one taken when I applied and then had new ones done when I went for my interview so I am sure the ones you have are fine.

CanadaContacting Toronto consulate re DCF
Thanks, it looks like I'm out of luck on that one.

I'm feeling so down about this. I realize that people wait much longer than we have, but it looks like we are still in for a long long wait :(

CanadaContacting Toronto consulate re DCF
Hi all, & Happy American Thanksgiving,

I wanted to look into filing DCF in Toronto. I know I've seen that the USC is supposed to be a resident in Canada, but I'm a dual Can/Am citizen and thought maybe that would be enough, so I wanted to contact the consulate in Toronto.

Also, as you can see from my signature, I've already filed an I130. If they let me DCF, am I allowed to file the a second I130? I just feel like DCF is significantly faster than I130 through the states, especially since they didn't upgrade my petition until 1 month ago.

Any advice, or especially an email address, would be appreciated! I tried looking online, but couldn't find it.

Canadau.s. divorce certificate
In Kentucky they don't have a certificate either, just the court decree - which can be anywhere from 2 or 3 pages and up. I haven't been divorced, but worked in a law office.

Hi everyone just a quick question from anyone in the u.s. who has been divorced.
I know they ask for marriage and divorce certificates from previous marriages for packet 3. now what my husband has is his divorce settlement its about 10 pages long detailing the divorce and its signed by the judge will they accept this. He says they don't have an actual certificate in idaho? like the kind you can frame and put on your wall. We had a hard time convincing people in canada to issue us marriage license but they did accept it any reply would be great terry and george

CanadaWinnipeg Medical Experience & a question
From what I've heard, it just depends on the doctors office whether they want the letter or not - it's not something the embassy requires. Also, I've heard that the medical is good for one year, but hopefully someone else knows better, and hopefully you won't be waiting that long! :)

CanadaPacket 3 , DS-230 quick question
If you don't know the address, then unknown would have to be the correct answer. I'm sure there must be other people out there that are estranged from a parent. I can't see how there would be any problem with it, but that's just my opinion :)

Canadachildren and interview for k3/k4
I found this online after much searching:

"Generally, yes. The Consulate sets the requirements. Some do not
require the child to attend if they are under 14, and some will
require the child to attend even if they are not going to move to the
United States with the parent, but will "follow to join" later."

I don't think you'll have to drag your children around unnecessarily, just email or call the consulate to ask :)

Yes, just do an addendum :)

Alright I'm on Question 22... List all employment for the past 10 (!!!!!!) years...
I can't fit it all in that space. Should I just add a G325A-esque attachment to it and send it in with the fax?

CanadaI've decided to try to transfer to Vancouver...
I guess what I was trying to say was that once we commit to transferring to Vancouver, I'm doubting we could switch back if Vancouver suddenly looks like it's going to take forever, so he would have to go to Vancouver even if it wasn't the faster option. I think it would tempt fate too much to transfer twice :)
ribletFemaleCanada2006-12-02 12:17:00
CanadaI've decided to try to transfer to Vancouver...
Thanks for all the responses. That quoted material is discussing two different things. K3's are a NON-immigrant visa, so the part where it talks about not processing immigrant visas doesn't apply to K3's. It's the IR/CR1 that is processed only in Montreal. (See there are 2 headings meaning 2 different sections, "K3 Visas", and "Immigrant Visas".) Thanks again!

I am absolutely sure about this from personal family experience, I had to go from Vancouver to Montreal for my green card interview, and my brother-in-law got his K3 in Vancouver :)

Gosh, after reading these replies I really want to try this. But my husband feels like it's a gamble and that Vancouver might slow down, and then we'll be stuck paying for the plane ticket. I also worry that Vancouver people might get annoyed with people transferring in. I don't know what to do!! I guess I've just created more stress for myself :)

CanadaI've decided to try to transfer to Vancouver...
Well, I've almost decided. My big concern is that it will be like jumping from one lane to another in traffic - the one you pick always slows down :)

Anyway, I was combing this board for people who transferred, just trying to see how they did it.

If people wouldn't mind sharing with me at what point they requested the tranfer, and the steps that they took I would really appreciate it! Thanks so much :)

You're so funny Jersey Girl :) But heavily is never spelt with two L's, regardless of where you are :)

Welcome. Pull up a chair. The beer fridge is stocked with Labatt's and Molson's. On the dessert table, we feature Nanimo bars and butter tarts. The reading material includes the Globe and Mail, MacLeans, and Canadian Living.

We have been designated a charity of some sort, and have regular visits from hockey players and comedy stars doing feel-good tours with photo ops.

We are practicing our American English. Say "napkin," instead of "serviette." If you want a pop, ask for a soda. If you plan to do any driving in New Jersey, learn to stick your finger out the window. That's right, your flip-the-bird finger. It's a friendly, opening remark kind of greeting.

Get set for paying for your own health insurance and taking expensive pills for high cholesterol because the fast food here will kill you.

Thanksgiving is coming Nov. 23 and is the most heavily traveled day of the year. Notice there's only one "L" in "heavily" and traveled."

It's 5 o'clock somewhere, so open me another beer, eh?

CanadaHealth Insurance
I checked out ehealthinsurance.com - I was actually kind of surprised that there were some for less than $200 a month for 2 people, depending on what kind of deductible you get. If it's just for emergencies and not regular care you can get a pretty good deal.

Is the police report valid for 6 months or one year? I was trying to remember - because if it's only 6 months, then it's possible it might take that long until your interview (not to be a downer!! sorry)... but NVC stage often takes 2 months or so, and then Montreal is averaging 4 months or so. Maybe it would make sense to wait a little bit -- that is if the police report is only good for six months, otherwise, just ignore me :)
