Michael was approved this morning!! He said it was very easy! He had a nice male consular officer, and not really any issues :)

I will try to get a review out of him later, but he basically just treated the security downstairs like he would a border guard - speak when spoken to, and he was fine (I warned him to stay seated in his chair!)

We got it and are now in Kentucky after a 12 hour drive!!! Sorry I didn't have time to woohoo, Michael disconnected the internet before I had time!

CanadaHow reliable is Canada Post's tracking system?
Well, I have several theories about this delay now...

a. Montreal hates me.

b. Canada Post hates me.

c. They both hate me and have made a pact to torture me.

d. I have lost my frickin' mind!

I'm trying to keep my cool, but seriously! If it was issued yesterday, why haven't they mailed it... and if it has been mailed, why isn't it showing up on the tracking?

I've had to reschedule both of my exams this week b/c I couldn't take the stress of having to get there at last minute!

I feel bad complaining when I know people are still waiting for their interviews, but it makes me feel a bit better - I just want it to be over! :)

ETA: there is also the possibility that Michael wrote down the tracking number wrong, in which case he won't even need a green card because I will leave him here (jk).

grrr, I just called Montreal and apparently the visa was just "issued" today - and may or may not go out in the mail today... she said he should get it by the end of the week :( I have to leave by Wednesday at the absolute latest, so I will just hope that they mail it out today I guess. Either way it will be fine, but it will mean an extra trip up to get his stuff, unless they let me bring it across before him.

Yes, we're in Toronto... I sure hope we get it today, if we do we're throwing everything in the truck and leaving today :)

I'm just not sure if Montreal mailed it out yet... his interview was last Wednesday. But if they mail it today we should get it tomorrow. We'll see what happens :)

They mailed my visa laste Monday and I got it last Wednesday - Montreal to Vancouver. That's pretty good I think... Are you in Toronto? I think you'll probably get it today!

Michael's tracking number for his documents from Montreal is not showing up in the system yet... I'm just wondering if I should hold out any hope that it may show up tomorrow nonetheless.

I think I'm going to reschedule my exam I'm supposed to take on Wednesday just in case, but thought I would check the reliability of the tracking system in case anyone had some input :)

If you file for AP most people have that in a few months (I believe)... so it wouldn't be a matter of 2 years. You can file for AP with your AOS.

I have heard of emergency AP where they expedite the application for illness, etc. but I'm not sure if they only do this if you have already filed for AP or if you can just do it when needed.

After we (my girls and I) cross the border with our K1 visa's are my girls able to return to Canada prior to my getting married???

See, my girls spend a lot of time with my parents in Canada. They are planning on watching them when me and my man take off for our wedding in Vegas. Now last nite as I'm trying to fall asleep I had this question in my head....what if they can't go back to Canada?? Then what....???

We live on the border (as you may/may not already know) so it all works out so good. Now, I'm just concerned.

Nope... only with AP which you can file with your I-485 after you are married... So your parents would have to come to the US if they want to watch them.. if they go to Canada, they will not be able to get back into the US...

As Canadians we oftentimes have become too complacent about our relationship with the border. This shoudl serve as a reminder on how complicated the border really is...


Is there such a thing as an emergency advanced travel. Like if somebody back home in Canada took ill and you had to get back to be with them. I would like to find this out as my Mother is up in yrs and I'm wondering if she took ill would I be allowed to travel back to Canada before the 2 yr thing

When I first moved down here I had to have a medical (including an eye exam)... well, I said ZED and the nurse looked back and forth between me and the chart several times before I realized she didn't know what I was saying... she thought I was trying to read the chart like the letters made words! lol

Well you'd think they'd have it in Los Angeles, after all it's Canada's third largest city by population ha ha.

Now with the letter Z, I guess I never grew up ever saying it as Zed. I learned from Seaseme Street and it was always Zee, so I always said it that way. It wasn't until I was getting out of highschool that people were saying it a lot more and trying to change how they said it. It was around then that the CRTC started putting their version of kids shows over the US shows to have more Canadian Content. I stuided this in my communications degree in college, so even the kids shows would be edited to put Canaidan stuff over the US content which of course in things like Sesame Street, was the letter Zed rather then Z.

Now everytime I go to Canada to visit, everyone that used to say it Z now says it as Zed. Good thing I never need to adapt, that would be confusing as most people wouldn't know what a Zed is. I still think it sounds really weird...

That's funny, they have oven ready lasagna noodles in Kentucky. I always figure if we have it here they must have it everywhere else :)


What's the deal with not having "oven ready" noodles (e.g. lasagna noodles) in the U.S.? My husband looked at me like I was insane when we were in the grocery store and I was commenting about how they didn't have any.

And he still thinks I'm a freak about putting gravy on my fries. :D

When my husband and I went to get our license, they filled in the info for us... well when we we're going to sign it, I noticed that the woman had checked "Hispanic" for my husband. He's Portuguese and Brazilian... I really don't get those race boxes, especially when they have like 3 boxes.

She apologized and said she had made a mistake- but then she just looked at him and asked, "So, what are you then?" Why do they even care?

Ha HA!! I was thinking I musta been crazy when I read the Race Block on the Marraige license!!! I had to call my fiance at work and ask him what the HECK I had to put there. Funny the difference between the two Countries. I guess that's the difference the Charter of Rights makes!! :) Wacky!

I love Horizon milk - the first time I had it, I remembered what milk used to taste like when I was growing up. Organic is definitely better in this case!

2) Shreddies

HAHA! My siblings proudly showed my fiancé that on the Shreddies box it says something like "Only made in Canada" - or actually now that I think of it maybe it was the Just Right box. (And he liked both kinds of cereal, lol)

3) Bagged Milk

Now how would you get that across the border? In a cooler? lol


OMG don't laugh...my fiancé drove cartons of Horizon organic milk into Canada for me weekly because it tasted so much better than the milk in Canada. In a cooler. That and Tillamook cheese.

That's what we did for Michael - there is actually a box to check for living apart for the entire year.

I'm going to have to do that too. We got married in early November 2006.

Can you file married but separate? Like just continue to file as if you were single but check the "married" box and not claim any additional benefit?

You may have read it, but it wasn't true :) BUT, if you are close to having 1/2 your time out of the U.S. in the prior 5/3 years, then you have to be careful as you are still not supposed to exceed that before the Oath ceremony - hopefully this isn't an issue for many people but it was for me because I went back to Canada to finish up university.

This is interesting. Somewhere else on the board I thought I read that you could not leave the country after filing.

How about being able to vote, not having to notify USCIS about changes of address, or renewing your green card just to name a few. People might treat you like a citizen, but there are definitely still benefits to really being one.

Being a US Citizen or Permanent Resident have similar privaleges. I have to tell you that I was a Permanent Resident for 22 years before I filed for Naturalization. I didn't have problems whether I need to be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident. Naturalization just gives you precedence, and higher standards to follow. However, I didn't experience myself being treated differently at all compared to regular citizens. And, I'm Cambodian. Different skin color, and everything. Yet, they treat me as I am a US Citizen. Weird.

I don't think anything happens when a parent naturalizes, I just researched a bit on this and didn't find anything useful. I believe they will have to file when they turn 18.

Someone got me one of those flags as my citizenship gift, I thought it was really cool :)

Awesome cake! I'm definitely going to do something like that for my husband. ahha. Would it be silly of him to wear his American flag tie? I'm thinking that would be sort of lame, but what a more appropriate time.

Cake came from our most awesome yum bakery--much better than home-made from this family!

I don't think the tie would be silly--DAH wore his Stars n Stripes undies for good luck :help: What more appropriate time, indeed!

I'll put in another plug for the gift I got him, because it's still mentioned to this day. I had our State Rep fly a US flag over the US Capitol in the DAH's honor & presented it to him after the ceremony (comes with a certificate)--he was really moved! For under $20, best bang for the buck ever! Look for info on your State Rep's website.

Anyuta: What a great experience, to speak at your ceremony! What was the heart of your talk? I think the ceremonies are so interesting!

Basically the speeches are about how lucky we are to be U.S. citizens, and what it means. Some of the people seemed like they just liked to hear themselves talk though :)

Mine took about 3 hours because there were so many people, then everyone had to sign in, give back their green cards and all that, then we had to go to our assigned seats... then there were speeches, and everyone had to stand up and say where they were from, we had to take the oath, and then we were called up to take our certificates.

There was alot of waiting, and some of the speeches were a bit much, but it was exciting b/c we got to be citizens :) Many people brought friends & family, they had to sit in a separate area on the other side of the room.

Mine was almost exactly 9 months - but I had an RFE at my interview, so that added about a month to six weeks.

I know that whichever district you live in will be shorter/longer, depending on the sub-office and what not, but whats an *overall average*???

Like anyone on here who already is a citizen, how long did it exactly take from start to finish???

USPS is the ONLY organization that you can use for PO boxes.

I just used Express Mail guaranteed overnight, but waived the signature requirement by checking the little box. Or you can require signature, but it seems to make it take a few days longer until they get someone to sign.

It doesn't matter that you didn't apply in three years... your original status in the U.S. was based on your relationship to your ex-husband and if that was fraudulent it doesn't matter how long you waited to apply (not saying that it was fraudulent!)

Get them whatever you can and write a statement explaining your position and what happened to the marriage. Maybe someone would be willing to swear in an affidavit as to the real nature of your old relationship.
