I lived in Toronto - I love it! I am always excited to go back - which currently I get to do once a month to see Michael :)

Are you planning a visit?

Canadatransferring money to Canada
That's crazy - I totally understand putting a hold on a cheque, but on the entire account?? Very bizarre.

Im not sure if this is pertinent here but ......a couple years ago I wrote my husband ( then finace) a check for $1000.00 from my US bank account and his bank (RBC) put a 25 day hold on the funds. Because of the amount after exchange being more than $1000.00 they said they were required to freeze his account.
We didnt know they did it and it caused him some real problems.......his child support check bounced....set his ex wife off the edge etc etc.
Also, when he has sent me money in the past, he occasionally would send an International money order , which my bank put a 10 day hold on as they didnt know what else to do with it. Now he sends personal checks which clear without a hold, although they don't give me the best exchange rate.

Good Luck!

Generally the only prohibition I know of you have to declare if you are bringing more than 10k in cash across the border. My understanding is that they are generally only concerned with large cash transactions, but if you are doing everything electronically I don't know of any problems that can arise.

CanadaFrench Birth Certificate?? Translation needed?
I honestly think absolute worst case scenario you may be delayed if they are not happy with your documents - but just until you get the right one to them... this should NOT result in a denial.

I hope you manage to get it all sorted out!

CanadaFrench Birth Certificate?? Translation needed?
I found this site discussing what K1's need for Montreal:

http://home.earthlin...lice-birth.html

it's slightly out of date, but where it discusses Quebec birth certificates, it sounds like what you have may be what you need.

Unless someone can absolutely confirm this, I would definitely call Montreal as soon as possible in the morning.

This municipal certificate sounds like what you need - was it issued at your birth or later? I'm trying to research this for you!

The municipal certificate has both my parents name on it, and my place of birth (including the hospital). It is also in both French and English. We had a fire, and some of our documents went up in flames. I am going to try to hunt down my baptismal certificate as well.

I can not believe this is happening to me.

The key is having both of your parents' names on it and where you were born... there must be a way to get a translation done in one day. I would call Montreal in the morning and find out exactly what the requirements are for translation, unless someone else on here can tell you.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!11

My parents do not know what the long birth certificate is.

The municiapl registration holds a seal, and was recognized by the Passport officials in the past. However, the wallet size birth certificate is now used for the passport.

What does the long version look like?

I'm f*cked!!!!!!!! My apt. is this TUESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No time to translate........... What the hell should I do??????????

CanadaI am absolutely beside myself right now...
I am very sorry, I know every delay hurts! I wanted to smack my husband a couple of times - he's slightly ADD, and while I tried to fill out as much as possible, both times he filled out forms he made several mistakes! And he knew it was important, but sometimes he's careless, he's just not a detail oriented kind of guy... but I really sympathize. I hope it doesn't delay you much!

CanadaAOS Approval
I've heard anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, it really seems to vary.

Just wondering how long it took to get the actual permanent residence card from receiving the welcome notice.
It's been a week since I got the notice?

Gosh! At this point it seems like everything that can wrong has already! Good Luck in the morning!!

You'll never guess what happened. He made a mistake!!!!!!!!! I only noticed after I drove home, took off my jacket, started organizing my file, and had a cup of camomile tea!

I had to go back to his house and pick-up the corected version. I just got back.

Why is this happening to me? I'm trying not to picture my Fiance having a peaceful night, in front of the T.V.

I don't suppose you have any friends that are notaries? One of my friends is a lawyer and he's a notary... do you have any lawyer friends?

It does sound like the both the translator and the notary have to meet. That sucks.

Barring you happening to know a notary, it might just work if you take one that's not notarized... I don't know if they even look at things that closely. I personally would try to take the translation anyway.

It would be too easy any other way!

"All documents not in English must be accompanied b a certified translations into English. Tranlsations must be certified by a compentent translator and sworn to by him before a Notary."

GGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

What do you think? Still worth it to have it translated.

Look at your packet - does it actually say it needs to be notarized???

ETA: and I am VERY impressed you were able to get your BC in one day! :)

I just got off the phone with a translater (certified). He will translate the doc ($40) tonight. BUT, it will not be notarized.

What do you think will happen? I'm definately tired. What till I tell you what I did today to get all this done - I still can't believe that I was able to get the Civil Status Director to produce my Birth Certificate in less than 1 DAY!!!!!!!!!!

It would have been too perfect if it was already in English!

My understanding is that ANYONE who is bilingual can traslate, as long as they attach a statement like the one I posted above. I'm not sure if Montreal will accept it for sure, but I don't see how it can hurt.

I can understand if you are exhausted by all this, but if you want to try it's an option.

Okay, good there is definitely a difference between notarized and certified.

Kristen - go get it translated if you still can, and have the translator do something like this on it:

I typed name , certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled .

Signature
Date Typed Name
Address

CanadaQ10 on I-130; K-3 vs IR-1, etc
As for the A number, once a person is assigned one it is theirs for life, like a Social Security or Social Insurance number.

I would try to find out what yours was ... do you have any of your old documents?

CanadaNow that I have Permanent Residence
There is no benefit I know of that you get by letting them know, other than having the condition removed from your card.

When I entered the U.S. on my Green Card I was issued one of the conditional SSN cards, lol! So I thought it was normal. I went and updated it when I became a citizen, which is something they actually need to know... I believe things are calculated differently for SSI once you are a citizen, but I'm not sure.

CanadaQuestion about Passport Stamps & Amount of Time Allowed to Stay in Canada!
It's totally normal not to get stamped, it's highly unlikely this will be an issue... just based on my own experience. I have crossed the border at least once or twice a month for the last 6.5 years.

If it ever became an issue you would have the opportunity to show that you were in the U.S. - I assume this wouldn't be very difficult to do since you live here.

My understanding is that they don't really track it that carefully.
ribletFemaleCanada2007-02-26 21:10:00
CanadaI-129 Questions
It depends how urgently you guys want to move to the U.S., and I would also say where in Canada you live.

If you live I believe something like Saskatchewan or East, then he would go to Montreal for the K3 interview, and in that case, there isn't that much time difference gained by going for the K3.

If he enters on a K3 he won't be able to work for about 3 months and will have to pay to file for Adjustment of Status.

Also, if you do choose to file the I129F, then you will most likely be forced into choosing the K3 as the new USCIS streamlining policy means that both petitions usually get approved at the same time and the I130 is retained in the U.S. because they assume he will enter on the K3 and Adjust Status.

Hope this helps a bit.

Congrats!! I'm so happy for you too! From your time line, your case was completed as of Jan 11, 07. And you got your interview around the middle of Feb... Mine was completed on Feb 13.. I hope around the same time next month, I'll get my interview date for April! hehehehe

CanadaEI and EAD
If you were working in Canada, you were paying for your EI benefits out of every check... you would not be eligible for unemployment in the U.S. because you won't have fulfilled the requirements there.

Your order of things looks right Misa :)

It does make sense to apply for the EAD separately first because if AOS takes a long time for some reason, it will be nice not to have to re-apply after a year.

You've done everything you can... and HONESTLY worst case scenario they will ask for a notarized copy and you will have it to them in a few days and you will have your visa maybe by next week!!

Everything will be okay, GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!! You know we're all rooting for you.

CanadaNo problem
The one piece of evidence that border guards consistently seem to love is the letter from the employer. For some reason it makes the feel very confident... don't ask my why, it's not even real letterhead.

The last time Michael and I crossed together the guy was suspicious, but after we gave him that he just laughed when I asked if he wanted to see the return ticket, and said something like he didn't need to see anymore.

I figure it shows that we're prepared, and it gives them something to cover their ###.

Yeah, it sounds like they denied you based on the first time. That sucks. Is Mel able to come up and visit you often? I know he came up a little while ago.

ribletFemaleCanada2007-02-28 00:27:00
CanadaNo problem
Lucky you being able to wait together, I'm glad there was no problem at the border.

K1's do not fill out the DS230 part II, that's for immigrant visas only.

Have a nice stay :)

YAY KRISTEN!!! I knew you'd be okay :D

CanadaInterview!
WOW! Congrats :) This has been a pretty good week around here!

I believe that you will be allowed into the consulate, but that you may or may not be permitted into the interview. That's my understanding at least.

Good luck, 26 days!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that my fiancee got the interview date! Yay! It is March 28th! I'm sure all the November people, your date is coming so don't worry too much! I wanted to thank everyone for being super supportive!

A question just popped up. In the letter, it says due to space issues, friend and family must wait outside. Would I be allowed to accompany her into the consulate and to the interview?

Thanks again everyone!

CanadaCalling Cards (to call Canada from the USA)
Oh yeah, I forgot, for international calls I use tel3.com... I think it's a pretty good deal, & you don't need aa card, it's all online and you don't need a pin, you just call the number and it recognizes your account.

CanadaCalling Cards (to call Canada from the USA)
If you are going to get a cellphone of your own, Verizon is the only company that has a "North America" plan which means NO long distance to Canada or the U.S. -- I can even take my phone up to Canada and pay no roaming. It's pretty awesome - I bought one for Michael to have in Canada and I have one down here. He has unlimited evening/weekend minutes for about 49.99.

Hope this helps :)
