CanadaMTL - interview date

My employment base immigration (priority current) is approved by NVC this week.

1. How long is it taking to get the interview date for Montreal and letter after case complete from NVC?
2. Just wondering, do MTL (or NVC) send email or letter for interview notification?

3. I am seeing lot of DHL packet discussion but My friend who gone same process a year before told me that we need to take "One Prepaid express 12" x 15" Xpresspost Canada Post" for sending passport back. It seems I am missing something here..dhl or Xpresspost?

Thanks,

hey
1) it is hard to say the exact time line but 1-3 months to hear an interview date and then usually 1-2 months till the interview date. Montreal is a bit faster than when I interviewed but I think they are still quite backlogged.

2) If you did Electronic processing then Nvc will send you an email within a few days stating your case is complete and then they will email you once your interview date is set. (however I called a few times to check with nvc)

3) It is DHL all the way now

CanadaMontreal Interview - 05/18/11
Hi Va,

I understand not wanting to change your wedding date and your interview date but it is very unlikely that they will allow you to pick up your visa or that dhl will have it back to you in time. However I would like to point out it is NOT unheard of, I got my passport back in 2 days along with all the other people from my interview date. BUT lately it does look like it is taking a week or more so I would not get my hopes up. Could you hold off on the honeymoon?

Thank-you! I wish people would refrain from giving opinions unless asked. Facts was what I was looking for, and your experience is proof enough. Thanks again, you have been very helpful!! :)

I am not saying this is the case with everyone as I cannot answer for anyone else but for ME.. I have nothing on a background check

If you are talking about a police certificate than a copy is fine. A police report or court record well You should actually have like 5 certified copies as they want it at every step. It is a horrible situation.
In most cases if it was just one offense than he should be fine as they pretty much let everyone have a second chance....expect they can be really hard on "drug" convictions etc.

I remember you from the other posts....young and stupid ..I think He will be fine :)

Unfortunately to the eyes of the United states any record discharged or expunged is still a record. I cannot really give my opinion as I do not know the story. However If he has court papers it should say whether is was a conviction.

was it dropped? was he convicted? did he get probation? did he have a discharge?

Really You still have to say it happened as they ask if he has been arrested, charged or convicted.

I had two minor offenses both of which were done when I was a youth,I had a conditional discharge and they were removed from my record on my 18th birthday but to the united states they still exist.

CanadaWedding Anniversaires and what to do
We celebrated our first last July and ended up in Niagara falls for the weekend. We are still very much child at heart so glow in the dark golfing and amusement stuff was probably the best thing I could have asked for. We did plan on going there every year but who knows what will happen.

I had to make him come down to see me as We were waiting on an interview date.... He made me go back with him so It all turned out great.

CanadaTemporary health insurance
The day you Poe you are no longer eligible for OHIP, I was lucky enough to get insurance through my husbands company as "immigrating" can be consider a life change. I was without insurance for a week till I found this out but I was lucky. Other people have got some temp insurance

I googled it and found

Canadapregnant Canadian wife - any loopholes?
It definately is a great question and you should check with your insurance personnel. When I got here 5 months ago, they allowed my husband to add us but I was not actually covered till I called back in with my ssn. They did waive the wait-time as the next enrollment was a few later due to a "life changing event", Immigrating :)

Canadapregnant Canadian wife - any loopholes?
I found this :) From Quebec site :

Taking Up Residence Outside Québec

Persons who take up residence outside Québec cease to be covered by the Health Insurance Plan. They must notify the Régie of their departure and return their Health Insurance Card to the Régie.

Elsewhere in Canada

Persons who take up residence elsewhere in Canada are generally no longer covered after the end of the second calendar month following the date they take up residence in another province. See example. Up to that day, they benefit from services covered outside Québec.

If they were covered by the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan, their coverage ceases on the day they leave Québec.

Persons who decide to take up residence in another Canadian province while spending time there generally cease to be covered after the end of the second calendar month following the date they take up residence in that province. If they were covered by the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan, their coverage ceases on the day they take up residence in the other province.

CanadaInterview Information and Help
I had one large 13 pocket expanding folder and a Document folder (one pocket thing). In the expanding one I had all my copies from i130's,payments,flights,evidence,phone calls, chat logs, pretty much anything I could think of.
In the one pocket document folder I had my passport and copy, appointment letter and copy, the ds320 and copy, birth certificate and copy,i864 and copy, Ok everything that was asked for on the "appointment letter" lol.
I brought these items in a "grocery bag" the reusable type think it was from loblaws and I had no problems with it.

Not sure if thats a great idea to be honest. You should definitely work on more ties for sure, like apartment/house lease, letter from employer saying what day you are expected back, bank statement, anything you can possibly think of. Some people have no problems after a denial but others can get the harsh treatment. Personally I would probably wait till July and try at that time but thats just me.

CanadaRefinanced Car
Hey Y'all
So I thought I should share my experience with you guys just so you know...you know :)

I poed here on Novemeber 1 2010, so 6 months ago and last month I got my first credit card although My husbands account shows up on my credit report as well as I am a authorized user on it.
I have a credit score of 653 and have decided to co-sign to refinance my husbands car so that A) It will have my name on the title b) to lower the rate and C) I hate capital one auto loans (there credit cards are great though). Due to my husband having a bankruptcy in his past when he bought the car last year(for me) the rate he got was extremely ridiculous ARP at 18.83%. However when I was approved today for the primary loan person , I was approved at a ARP of 7.99%. IS it the best? No but it is a hell of a lot better than 18.33.

Plus I get to build credit while paying off the car and Have my damn name on it lol .

CanadaPeace Bridge Crossing during ROC with extension letter

I always cross at the Peace Bridge and have yet been pulled over for secondary. I never thought to bring ties to Canada either, so I guess I have just been lucky. The next time I cross will be when I move to the States with my Visa. That won't be until September. My fiancee is coming up to help me move. I'm a little worried though, since he plans to fly up and won't have a returning ticket as we are renting a truck to move my stuff back. He has come up with a one way ticket before with no problems (we drove back to the States in my car together). Maybe I should tell him to get a note from his boss stating when he is due back to work.

I do have a question about port of entry at Peace Bridge...when you cross, what do you do? Do you go to the normal border patrol booth and tell them we are immigrating? I am so nervous about that!

You pull up to the usually port of entry hand over your passport and let them know you are "using your k-1 visa to enter", they will ask a few of the regular questions about tobacco and what you are bringing in etc, then tell you to pull over n park and send you to secondary.

I have never had a problem at the peace bridge, before or even during the visa process. They seem to be quite awesome and rule abidding officers however I did have a pain in the ####### due at the rainbow bridge. I will never use that bridge again!
I have also crossed at the Massena NY small bridge and the thousand Islands port of entry as well. lol

CanadaAnyone who has stayed at La Tour hotel

I thought I read somewhere on VJ that La Tour (or maybe it was another hotel) has lockers or something where I can lock up some things before I head off to my interview? I don't want to leave stuff in our hotel room. Does anybody know?

I am not exactly sure. I know that most places will hold your bags in a locked up room. I stayed at the holiday inn express and asked if I could leave my baggage with them. I put my baggage in the "baggage room" got a number and watched the room be locked. I had all my stuff including my laptop stored there.

CanadaHagerstown maryland MVA review
My husaband and I decided that this would be a great day to do down to the mva as this is the only day over the next two weeks he would have time. He needed to renew his license as it expired in just a few months. We arrived there and lined up in the huge information line then I noticed another information line with the words drivers licensing ...Yay a smaller line.
My husband and I both went up to the information line pretty much at once, him on the right and me on the left. I walked up and told the lady that I needed to Transfer my out of country license, she seemed nice and started telling me exactly what I needed. So I began to hand her my ssn number, 2 pieces of mail, my passport with the i551 visa in the passport, and my Canadian license. she asked for my i94 which I proceeded to tell her We (cr-1's) don't get that, she listen to my knowledge for a minute as I rambled on and then asked me for the 3-Hour Drug & Alcohol Education Program certificate. I started to say something and she told me not to worry about it she needed to go see if my knowledge checked out and she would be right back. Meanwhile My husband got his number and was called up to get his license renewed and was done within 5 minutes. 45 minutes later The lady returned, I did a vision test and I was told I was good to go.I received a number g23 and waited only about five minutes. I was called to booth 10 where a lady took my photo, asked if my address was correct and put some information into her computer. She asked if this was my first license which I replied to as No but my first license in the united states. I didn't really have enough proof of address so she asked my husband to sign a piece of paper to declare that my information was correct. She went away for a moment and seemed concerned about something.she called her suprvisor twice in a matter of 10 minutes. When she came back she explained that her computer was asking for the drug and alcohol certificate number and would not let her override it but her supervisor told her that i did not need the certificate. Again another call to the supervisor, when she came back she explained a KEY point to me Because My license was from Ontario Canada it is actually a out of state license not a out of country. The usa has a deal with most of canada and mexico so it is much easier for us to get licenses. So she corrected the information and bammm I no longer needed the 3 hour certificate. From there it took a matter of 10 seconds, I paid 45 dollars and was handed my freshly printed license. Yay

I just want to show everyone the information from the mva site.

CanadaName change of Minor

Its ok, I wasnt meaning it as in "hes not his father" of course hes his father. Just the legal part of being his father or not is what I mean. It would be scary to have something happen to you (god forbid) and then the father not have any rights over his son.

Yes I know, It is just too complicated for now at least, I am going to go down to the local court house next week and see if there is anyway around it.
I have researched the idea a few times, I just do not think we should have to go through the same process as a usual adoption, I mean he has been his life for years now, why should we have to do the same process as someone trying to adopt a child from spain or china. Home studies etc.

However Thank you for bringing up the idea again as I automatically brought it back up to my husband.
CanadiandggalFemaleCanada2010-11-24 16:34:00
CanadaName change of Minor

You want a legal name change for him? or you want your son to be adopted and have the name and the father?

Having just a legal name change doesnt make him the father of your son or give him rights etc. You would need to go through an adoption and then you would have adoption papers to show the name change and all the rest.

For now we are just looking at name change, a adoption Is very complicated at the moment as they consider it an International adoption and not a step parent adoption. Which means we really have to wait till we are citizens before we do the adoption.
You are right in regards to him not having an legal right until adoption but he IS the only father my son knows so I beg to differ as to what makes him a father or not. In the eyes of the courts though he is a step father :)

again at the moment we are just looking for a legal name change until we become citizens.

You want a legal name change for him? or you want your son to be adopted and have the name and the father?

Having just a legal name change doesnt make him the father of your son or give him rights etc. You would need to go through an adoption and then you would have adoption papers to show the name change and all the rest.

I need to apologize that might have seemed snippy, what I mean is yes I know that in the eyes of the law, My husband will still have no rights etc and he will not be named as the Father on any paperwork :)

CanadaName change of Minor
Hello all.
I have been looking into legally changing my sons name for a few months now, I will be changing it to my husbands last name.
I did look into it before I had left Canada but they told me I would have to return his Birth certificates and That it would take 8-12 weeks for the process IF IT WAS APPROVED. Unfortunately when I was looking into it, I was moving here 6 weeks later so I opted to wait.
I was told that I could legally change it through the state I am living in, each state has different laws and terms.
We just arrived in the states on October 31st 2010, I will have to remove our conditions in july/aug of 2012.
Now To my question/advice if anyone has been in my situation,

IF I do get the opportunity to change his name in the next year, what will I have to do in regards to USCIS. Would I inform them via phone and then just file his name as the new one when needed on all up coming paperwork?
What about All of my paperwork for him including custody of him have his Birth name on them, I do not think I can get a Judge to correct his name on court papers.

I am just trying to figure out how hard this is really going to be for us. It seems to be so complicated and I have yet to even start the process.

Thanks In advance

So if DHL will call me with a waybill number, couldn't I just call them first (and repeatedly :P )and find out if my visa is ready? I mean if I gave them my name or something?

I believe Jadenjewel called the DHL number and the looked her up via her passport Number/Name and found that it was there. DHL will not always call but they did in my case.
I think you can call DOS the number is 2026631225 press 1 then 0 then 0 and see if your visa has been printed etc. (I am not sure But I used the search button for Ideas)
