CanadaIR1 / CR1 - Montreal Timeline to Interview

Two is right :)

How long does it take for the waybill number to show up on the canada.usvisa-info site? Mine still isn't updated, and I'm getting impatient. Sigh.

Unfortunately your never know lol sometimes within days sometimes after you already receive your visa. use the reference id from the canada.usvisa and use it at dhl.ca. This site usually updates.

May take a few days though

Got back to Repentigy at around 10 or so this morning. We got approved!! WOOT! I'm so happy. The process as a whole went well. When we called up to submit all the original forms, I have to say that guy was a complete jerk. I submitted Jeff's birth certificate without a translation. I called the NVC back when I had to submit it digitally and they said as long as it is in the language of the country you're interviewing in, or english, you're all set. No need for a translation. The guy was all rude and wanted to know who told me that. In any case, we got the really nice blond lady for the interview and got Jeff's welcome to the US letter.

Met Pixel there too. It was great to have someone else there to chat with!

YAY!! Now it's just waiting on the visa.

congrats! :)

Approved! Met Jill & Jeff there, they should be done any minute. The interview was so nice and easy, despite the mess I made of my binder and all the times I dropped my stuff on the floor, haha.

COngrats....

Thats funny I did the exact thing messed up all my paperwork and dropped almost everything on the floor...ask birdnerd she saw it all..I was a mess

I'm here in Repentigy (where Jeff lives). We'll head into the city tonight. I booked us a room at the Hyatt so we don't have to deal with morning traffic into Montreal. I have my binder organized. Everything from the NVC as well as everything from my I-130 process with a copy of each. I organized everything in the order that comes up on the interview letter. I'm definitely nervous, but I'm sure everything will go well. We're planning on getting there around 7ish. I'll see PIxelUlu and jdm2006 there tomorrow!!

Good luck to you all!!
You will all be approved :)

2 months to receive interview date or 2 months til the interview? I'm just wondering if we should be expecting a date very soon...even if it is 3 months away.

I say its about a 1-2 month wait to here an interview and then a 4-8 week from that date to the interview.

I mean a bunch of people found there date out recently for Jan and Feb.

Just received notice that our case was completed at NVC....finally! How long does it typically take for the NVC to forward everything to Montreal? I know some of you had been waiting since the summer to get an interview date as well as some that finished with NVC in December just got their dates.....does it look like Montreal is speeding up a bit?

It seems it has sped up a few months. I waiting five months but now it looks like around 2 months.

As far as I know, we don't have to pay another fee.

Quick question to experienced VJers before I head off to Montreal in the morning; here's what I have in my recently constructed Immigration Binder:

  • everything from my I-130
  • everything from my I-864 package
  • everything from my IV package
  • my original birth certificate
  • husband's birth certificate
  • original wedding certificate
  • two American-style passport photos
  • DHL reference ID
  • letter from consulate with appointment
  • passport
  • original police check
  • original DS-230
  • original I-864 documents (tax info, etc.)

And I will pick up my medical results tomorrow. Did I forget anything? Any last minute advice? Can't wait for this to be over!

Nope that looks about right, how about relationship evidence like emails, phone chats, plane tickets?

My advice is stay calm and smile, it will be over before you know it and I am sure you will get the lovely words "Your approved".

Oh you showed up at 7? What time was your interview? I would definitely love to show up earlier!

Also, for a hotel in Montreal. I know there's a buttload of cheap ones if you get them from those websites like hotwire, but I didn't want to chance getting a really shabby looking hotel. I just went with the Holiday Inn which is about an 8 minute walk from the consulate. It was 115 a night, and I booked two nights. I don't mind it one bit. Total with taxes came to $269 (17% tax was $39)

I like Holiday Inn's service. Although all differ with services, I've stay at a few different ones in my life and they were all perfectly fine with me! :)

Yes but my interview was in October but as you see AB2C0 was there at 7am... I am sure there have been many others that are still showing up early as to my knowledge its still first come first serve.

I stayed at the holiday inn express, it was very nice(the room was awesome) but did get a tad chilly during the night.

I believe the NVC, or I read someone say no earlier than 30 minutes prior to your appointment. I'm pretty sure that is it. I was planning on going really early so I could be in and out, but I was told/read that you're not suppose to do it. So I'd say be there for 9:30.

If its any different, anyone step in. I'm sure I just read it last week!

They do say that on the sheet of paper and on the website However I have yet to hear many people actually arriving 30 minutes early.. I hope some of the recent interview people can give you more details. I showed up at 7am.

Thanks.. So if I am reading this correctly, it took about 4 months after the initial "complete" email for them to send you an interview date email? Dang that is long. How long after that "interview date" email was the actual interview?
Also, is there a free phone number to contact Montreal embassy at regarding current approximate wait time? The only one I see says it takes $1.59/minute to talk! TIA

Your welcome.

Yes mine took 4 months from case complete to finding out the interview date. then 4-5 weeks till the interview date.
Not to my knowledge, i just called nvc all the time.

Hey all, I checked today for my wife's CR1 visa and it was approved (well.. the sign in failed.. I just have to call in and verify that it was approved. :D  )
Anyways.. I'm sort of lost now. Do I have to wait for them to email/contact us with an interview date? How long does it take them to give us a date? :help:
From looking at the spreadsheet on google docs, it looks like recently, it's taking about 150-160 days from NVC complete to Interview date.. so is that a good estimate for us too? Or can it change a lot (be like 100 days  )

Thanks in advance. Thanks to this site, her file was completed without any RFE's. (Hell.. we got NOA2 without any touches lol)

(PS. Electronic Processing is da bom! :P )

You should get an email soon saying that your case is complete and to await a interview date (something along those lines). You will be waiting for another email stating your date etc but yes do not except it for a few months as the backlog at Montreal is horrible. You can call NVC every once and awhile to check if you have a date yet or if they are scheduling but usually they will just tell you If they are done for that month. I think i waited 4 months to hear word of my interview date so just hang in there.

The more people I've watched go through this long process and then get approved the more I smile. Congrats again to you all  To those of you still waiting, hang in there the day will come when you too will be wearing a permanent smile. I finally move next week and I am getting a bit nostalgic about home (my Canadian one) and how I will miss my friends and family. Yet so glad to be able to FINALLY start my new life.

I hope everyone has a smooth transition and that the holiday's will be happy and healthy and spent with your loved ones.

 I have to agree. I smile seeing all these people being approved as I remember just about two months ago being sooo nervous that I thought I would have a panic attack at the interview (I did get sick from being nervous, just ask birdnerd). I am super happy to see everyone so excited to be starting a new phase of their life.
I do miss my Family really bad though....Maybe one day they will all come join me...:)

Got my date too! January 7th! I have a question though - we're having our wedding the day after (terrible timing, I know) but I'm going anyway because there's no way I'm rescheduling this. We're supposed to go down to the US on the 9th though as a little honeymoon (we were married last year, but are celebrating the wedding on our first anniversary with a wedding) but they keep the passport, right? How long will they keep it? Is there anyway I could get it right then and there?

You can ask at the interview but there is a very big chance they will say no. A few people have got next day pick up when there is a emergency situation/urgency such as your apartment lease is expiring in 3 days. No harm in asking though.. also my Visas came very quickly however there is no guarantee in that case as well, mine took 2 days interview was on the Wednesday and DHL pickup was available on Friday.

Enchanced drivers license is a good idea

soscolin (Colin and Patty) here: Received notice this morning of Wed Jan 12, 2011 interview date in Montreal. Was Aug 10 approved at NVC so is 155 days from NVC approval to interview. The big delay we had was 1I-130 application Sept 2009--June 2010 getting it to NVC.

Question: says it is a CR-1 We have been married more than 2 years--doesn't that make it an IR--unrestricted I-130?

Hey Canadiandggal, thanks for the info. Very glad I asked!

I just went to dhl.ca, clicked on "Track" and then entered our reference ID. It just says "No record found for this reference number.". Is that normal and should I assume it just means that Montreal hasn't yet sent it? Or should I worry that something is wrong?

I have a question for those who recently received their visas. We mailed in Kathy's medical exam results late and we are now waiting for Montreal to issue the visa. According to this web page, we should be able to check status online:

http://csc.public.s3...ructions_en.pdf

I have been logging in every day and compulsively refreshing the "My Account" page, hoping to see "Applicant Status: Ready for Pickup". Was anyone else successful at getting accurate and timely information about their visa return status from this new online system? Does it tell you anything as soon as it has been shipped? Or does it only display status information once it is ready for pick-up at your DHL location?

It feels rather futile, when day after day there is nothing posted there. I would like to hear from others whether or not this new system actually works!

Jeremy

Mine did not show up as ready for pickup until after I had picked it up On that site BUT It did show me that it was undeliverable on the dhl.ca which meant it was at the dhl location.

Canadamedical at Woking, Vancouver

Hi everyone--

I've been kind of MIA lately because, frankly, I'm burnt out on this immigration stuff. It should have been over loooooong ago. I can't believe my baby is now 12 weeks old (almost) and her dad and I still aren't living together :(

Anyway, I officially passed my medical yesterday. I found other people's reviews on here to be accurate. I'll just add a couple of details relevant especially to those of you with babies.

I was veeery stressed at the last minute, because I'd intended to leave my baby at home while I did the medical. I'm nursing, but I'd saved up lots of breastmilk in the freezer. But suddenly a couple of days before the medical she started refusing bottles! She'd never had a problem with them before! So I had no choice: I HAD to bring her with me to the medical, and I was worried about whether I'd be able comfortably to nurse her there.

Well, I was lucky. She slept the entire time! I didn't need to feed her at all. She was completely asleep from the time we got in the cab (5:40am) to the time we returned home (8:50am). But, if I had had to nurse her I think it would have been fine. The waiting room at Woking is large, with comfortable seats grouped in twos or threes and facing various directions. So a nursing mother wouldn't feel like everyone was facing her. I don't remember anyone else describing the waiting room here on visa journey, so I thought I'd bring this up.

Oh, and you really spend most of your time in the waiting room in question. The actual exam, x-ray, and bloodtest are very efficiently handled and don't take long at all.

The one part of the experience that I would have hated to go through without a family member there to help me was the wait early in the morning outside before the doors opened. We got there at about 5:50 and were third in line. But it's January, and very dark at that time, and it was cold and rainy. We and the other applicants were huddled under an overhang by the parking garage. Eveyrone was friendly, but my husband found the whole situation a bit sketchy and was glad that I and the baby weren't there alone. Woking is right across from St. Paul's Hospital, which does service a fairly rough clientele (at least in the ER...lots of addicts, etc.) [Lots of other kinds of people go to that hospital too; it's an excellent hospital in may respects...I'm just saying that it's not 100% comfortable to be hanging around there in the dark in the rain with a 12 week old baby in a carrier]

Fortunately, the doors opened at 6:15 or so and from then on the experience was comfortable.

And I just want to say again: Thank goodness that's over! What a pain this whole process is. Well, almost there. I have to renew my passport tomorrow, then the Montreal interview is on the 19th. I hope to be in California by February 1.

Glad to hear it went rather well. It is kind of ridiculous that you are not In Califonia already, you sure deserve to be. I am sure all will go well on the 19th and you will be "home" in no time.
Good luck and keep in touch...

Hope the baby isn't growing "too fast" :)

CanadaPOE Question

I haven't gotten a definitive answer, so i'll ask here in the CR1 forum.
When I get my approval to cross into the usa, can I return back to Canada and still live/work here for the next couple of months?
Or do I have to really MOVE to the USA immediately? I would like to be able to go visit my husband for the next couple of months, but I would like to stay here in Canada until maybe June or so.
Thanks

You can poe whenever you would like and you can return when you like as well. There of been lots of people that have done their poe and then returned to Canada for a few weeks to pack, move, finish work. I even keep in touch with someone who for the last two months continued to work in Canada (drive to work from the states).

Although I believe it will count against your permanent resident time (for Citizenship)..but a month or two really shouldn't matter.

I hope someone can maybe say it better then I did.

Good luck

Canadatax question about S.S TAX medicare etc.

So i'm looking at hubbys year end pay stub while looking at tax returns and i just noticed the totals of the 4 diff taxes he has taken off..and i'm wondering what the hell is going on and where all that extra money went lol.

Federal and state taxes ok i get that one. i understand medicare and social security taxes as well. what i dont understand is this:

the amount of medicare and ss taxes taken off is almost the same amount total as the federal and state taxes, those of which we claim on our returns. But there is nowhere to get any credits back for the others stuff?? its just..GONE??

i seem to remember in canada being able to put everyting down on our tax returns, federal and provincial taxes, unemployment pension etc etc. and finding out if we over paid or not.

How come i can't do that with us returns? And are all pension considered federal or something? in canada i remember being able to mark down health plans as medicare expenses or soemthing..

i dunno this part just confuses the hell out of me and makes me cringe when i see how much money is cough " stolen" cough from my husbands paycheck...

so maybe someone can explain to me where all that extra $$ goes? and not make me hate the IRS etc? :)

Pfft Last year Chris got a large return for Federal but then we had to pay money to maryland as he owed.. so we went from 7000 refund to 3000 refund... then we got a letter stating he still owed 562.00 so we paid that... 5 months ago we got a letter that he still owes 400.00, he called and ttalked to someone yet again and they assured him that he still owed that amount.

We have still not paid it as our tax person told us just to wait till we file this year but I brought it up the other day and asked my husband how we owe money when we have paid them twice now... my husbands says thats IRS for you and that they tend to always come up with something. This year our tax return will be quite small and we better not owe anything errrrrr

Doesn't need to be two exact posts on this! just need one, plus you should title it IR-1 / CR-1 so people don't get confused..

The DS-230 is for the K-1.

CanadaDHL materials?

Hi everyone,

We received our interview date (Feb 9!) late last month with all of our interview instructions by email (yay electronic processing!). Should we also expect interview materials to be DHLed/mailed to us, or are the emailed notification and instructions all that we need?

Thanks!
Liz & Christopher

Did you do electronic processing?
If so then the only thing you will receive is a p4 email ...which would be the emailed notification and instructions. Your appointment letter you will use for the medical, print a few copies out as you will also use this to get into embassy as well. It should say you name, date of interview and the fourth page should be a list of documents to bring to the interview.

Good luck

well, I have always wanted to see Quebec. This is a trip we need to make together right? wish that were a trip we could plan ahead for. Do they give you much notice to book flights/hotel/etc?

He does not have to be there with you, My husband felt it was too long of a drive for him to come with me. It is all about what is comfortable for you.
They give you 4-12 week notice so enough time to make arrangements, also as mentioned before most people are scheduling their own dates through the online system now so you will be able to pick your own date(well sorta) lol.

thank you for the fee breakdown. That helps--only slightly confused now...I am immigrating to the US. Will I still be interviewing in Montreal? I guess I thought it would be a location somewhere in the US.

Yes it is normal to not hear anything for 5 months.
Yes you will be interviewing in Montreal, you will interview in Canada because you live in Canada. :)
Yes you must wait to move till you receive the visa from montreal and yes 9-12 months is a good approx timeline.

You will do fine and let us know if you have questions.

CanadaI-130...what happens next

I can't believe how much information is out there...because of that I'm becoming increasingly confused. My husband and I got married November 26, sent our petition I-130 Dec 24, received Dec 27, check cashed Jan 4 and NOA arrived Jan. 7. So now what? I was expecting some instruction or something with the NOA but it was just the receipt. Can anyone tell me what to expect and approximately when to expect it? I'm trying so hard to be patient but I have a feeling this waiting will end me!

anyone with insight??

Ok assuming that this is a regular i130 cr1 visa and not dcf (assuming you are filing from the states or he is lol).

You got your noa1 YAY congrats , you can sign up at uscis.gov for status updates on your case using the number on the noa1, please do not expect to see any movement as in some cases they never even update it till you get your noa-2 petition approved.Noa1 to noa2 takes around 5 months, just relax and try not to count the time. You will get an email when the Noa-2 is approved and a letter in the mail as well. From there your case will be sent to NVC which you will call and they will give you a case number, you will electronically (email) them all the documents ds320,police certificate, etc. Nvc usually takes 15-60 days on average, once all documents have been received you will get a case complete and an email saying that. Recently people have been receiving there "schedule your interview" within a few weeks and then your interview will usually be 1-3 months later.
hope that helps

CanadaImmunization Records for Medical...

I was e-mailing the Medical people in Toronto, and they said to me that I needed proof of the Flu Shot as well. Apparently its a new requirement? I went in and got a note from my doctor anyways just in case. Kind of weird!

Not new, One is only required to have a flu shot during flu season. In most cases people by pass the season and therefor are not required to have it. I did my medical the end of september fortunately Canada does not start giving the flu shot till the end of October so I did not require it, made me smile as I had already gotten a few shots the week before for mmr and Td..(I didnt want to be poked again lol)

CanadaCanadian marrying USC to reside in Canada

Hello, I am a Canadaian citizen engaged to a USC. We would like to be married in the US but then reside in Canada following that for at least a year. It doesn't seem like any of the visas really apply to the situation and that I should be able to go down as a visitor, be married and return to Canada with my wife. Am I missing something? I would hate to find out that I wasn't allowed into the US for our wedding.

Are there implications then as well for visiting the US after being married? If, at some point, we decide to live in the US can I just apply for an IR1-CR1 at that time or do I have to start that right away? Do you recommend stopping and talking with border officials at the crossing normally used?

Thank you for your time and comments.

Welcome to the forums,

You Can go to the States and get married with the intent on returning home ... It is not illegal to go to the states and marry.
You may be sent to secondary however If they suspect you are intending to immigrate which in most cases they will, Are you two having a large wedding or just court house?. Just make sure to bring any and all ties to Canada So they likely will let you through. Always tell the truth but there is no need to tell them your life story.

In Most cases you will have no problem visiting after you get married but there are some that will give you a hard time. Once you are married they may look at it as you are "immigrating" so always bring ties to Canada with you on all trips and be prepared to be deny entry.

You can start your visa journey whenever you like, the choice is up to you two. A cr-1 visa is taking about a year to complete so If you would want to move just after a year I would say fill in a few months when you are sure what you two want to do. There are tons of couples that have married and Not immigrated for years or who have started the process asap. The choice is yours :)

You can stop and talk to someone at the border you regular cross at but I am not sure it will matter. You are doing nothing wrong and in some cases the less they know the better...

AGAIN I am not saying lie just no need to tell them anything not asked for. I am also not advising anyone to go to the states with the intent to marry and AOS. :)

Good luck

Haha, thanks! The cupcakes were one of the things I was most excited for. They were delicious AND beautiful! We have a lot of kids on both sides of our family, so we wanted to make things a little more fun - the cupcakes plus the candy buffet were a big hit with them :)

I have to agree with everyone. It looks like your wedding was wonderful, the colours were fantastic and the look of those cupcakes are making my mouth water right now.

This is the only part I missed out on having a court house wedding...oh well one day we will have a renewel ceremony and rock the house oh ya.

Those of you that had a civil ceremony first- what did you wear?? I'm at a total loss here..

Hey chick, This is what we wore, my "special dress" this dress has been worn a few times but I love the fit and well I am not a dress person. I did buy a dress for our wedding but then we decided to just "do it" and I didn't have the dress with me. SO now I have a brand new dress that I will one day wear when we renew our Vows in the next few years. I actually loved being married in a court house, civil weddings are so calm and it doesn't change how special the day really is :)

CanadaHow to go about getting the Immigration Physical?

Luckily my mom still had my immunization card. But All I had to do was call the Regional Municipality of Halton (Local for me) and they sent me one. I received it 4 days later. Or do they not have your immunization charts after a certain amount of time?

Oh ya, Lol

I got a immunation card sent to me too from the Durham health department... the local health department area that you went to school in. Even if they only have till you became an adult, it might help :)

CanadaHow to go about getting the Immigration Physical?

Thanks everyone for your replies so far. Sorry that I forgot to mention what I was doing! AOS is what I am doing (I came here in August, got married in December, and now am in the painful process of everything). I didn't know you could do that, about finding out what vaccinations I've already received. I'll have to call them and see how much they charge for it, as it would make everything that much better. Unfortunately, they also want all my original medical reports, so they know what my medical condition has been like for the past ___ years. Worse comes to worse, I guess I can get the vaccinations over with, and try to talk to them at the appointment about everything else (though they said that they want everything first before we have an appointment). Ugh, out of the millions of people in Canada, I have to fall in love with one from another country. Don't get me wrong, I love him dearly; been together for almost 5 years (!) but damn it's hard!

Did you have the same family doctor for a long time? If so you could call them and see if they send you out a note stating what you medical history has been like and what it was the last time they saw you.

I had a note like this.. My doctor sent it to me through the mail.
