CanadaQuestion- Shipping Belongings to the US

Well the shipping company needs a photo copy of my visa that is in my passport.  They never stated whether it had to be activated or not.  And yes I could make a trip through the border before my stuff is shipped down and before I fly.  But won't they wonder why I am just going through just to activate my Visa?  Or could I just say that I am activating it now so that my stuff can be shipped out and show them my plane ticket for when I am actually moving?

CanadaQuestion- Shipping Belongings to the US

I am sure this has been asked several times before... But I am just curious if my belongings can be shipped down the week before I move?  At this time my stuff is being hauled down to Kentucky on July 12th.  And I am flying out the following week July 18th.  Will they ask questions or not allow my stuff through if my Visa is not activated until the following week?  Any thoughts or help or links to previous posts about this matter would be great!

CanadaPoE!!!
Well I FINALLY did my PoE today. I don't fly home to Kentucky until July 18th but my stuff was being shipped from Vancouver today so I had to do my PoE. We drove to the Peace Arch Blaine crossing with the uhaul and parked it and I walked down to the border. I stood in line for about 45 mins before it was my turn. I was probably the only one in there doing my PoE everyone else was being pulled in for other things (I saw one couple get a 7000 dollar fine for trying to bring drugs into the US). So prior to going down to the border I called 3 different times just to ensure that yes I could go do my PoE and come directly back to Canada. Once speaking with the CBP guy today I told him the situation and he said he wasn't sure if I could do that because normally when you do your PoE you are supposed to be travelling to your destination. Anyway he said he would ask his boss. He spoke with his boss for a few minutes and came back and said yes that was fine to PoE and go back to Canada. He then handed me off to another guy because he had something he needed to do. I waited about 15 mins for the guy to go through my paper work before he called me up to sign a few things take my finger print and stamp my passport then I was on my way. Altogether it took about an hour and a half mainly because of the long line. All the border guards I dealt with were super nice and it was a good experience.

So now I am back in Canada and fly home in 6 days!

I'm staying at the best western downtown. Finally have the flights and hotel booked. I'm happy. Now to get my jazz in gear and cancel things. I do have the week after the interview to pack too.

Ugh, I need to get my ####### packing.  As much as I would love to move in June, I think I am going to wait unitl the middle of July, even though I haven't seen Hubby since Christmas... Sigh sad.png

Thank you all for being so helpful.  I have officially booked the plane ticket and hotel.  We opted to stay at the Hotel Travelodge downtown Montreal.  Its like an 8 minute walk to the consulate... Now I am starting to get scared, its all sinking in and becoming so real blink.png

CanadaHotels in Montreal

So I am in the midst of trying to find a decent hotel close to the consulate in Montreal to stay at while I go for my interview.  I am just curious as to what others have done in the past if they had to stay in a hotel for their interview.  What hotel did you go with, was it close to the consulate, prices, was it clean, did it have free wifi?  Any help, thoughts, recommendations,  or past experiences with this would be greatly appreciated.

CanadaPOE question

I think AOS interviews are for those whoe are already living in the US but would like to become permanent residents. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

Aos interviews are for people who are in the states already or for people who came in on k-1 visas. cr-1/ir-1 do not have aos interviews

CanadaPOE question

Hi Everyone!

I went thru US customs at Trudeau airport in Mtl on July 20. I asked the customs official if I could opt to not having my US immigration visa stamped at that time and he said that I had no choice but to have it stamped. I told him that I had read that this was the POE officer's decision and he said that the POE will decide. He asked me for my sealed envelope and then led me to a waiting room. After about 45 minutes I was called in by a POE officer and I asked him the same thing, if I have the choice not to have my visa stamped right away so that I could buy a bit more time before I moved to the US. He said the choice was mine but it wouldn't really make a difference in me having to move to the US any faster. He said the US would be understanding if I needed some time to go back to Canada to finish up my affairs before I moved. He said that the US would give 6 months for sure. He said that there wouldn't be any problem if I moved to the US in January. So I finally decided to have my visa stamped. He opened my packet, went rhough the documents, finger printed me and stamped my visa. He wrote "IR1 in my stamp. He verified the address where the green card should be mailed and told me it should take 2 months for it's arrival.

Would anyone be able to help me with the following questions?

-I forgot to ask him whether our original marriage and my birth certificate would be mailed to me along with the green card?

-Also, what happens with my sealed medical records including my chest xray- do I ever get this back or are these only for them to see?

-My Canadian passport has to be renewed by Sept 26, 2011. Would you know if they would transfer the US visa into my new Canadian passport?

Thank you.

First off congrats!!!

1) You may not get them back unfortunately. You should have received them back at your interview or worst case with your package but not inside the package. Maybe someone else can be more help in that catogory.

2) You will never see your medical records again lol .. I kept my xray though as they didnt need it at poe.

3) eek thats a tricky one however if you are lucky you might actually have your perm resident card in about 4-5 weeks.

CanadaRCMP Certified Criminal Record Check looks like photocopy!

Well, I could email them, but what good would it do? It's not like I can do anything about it at this point- that's the document the RCMP sent me. The only thing I could do is tip them off that something is weird- and that could only hurt me. Better to just submit it and see what happens...

Its not weird thats what the thing looks like lol, I truly wouldn't worry about it.. Thats the document they gave you its legit and im sure the consulate will know it/figure it out.

CanadaRCMP Certified Criminal Record Check looks like photocopy!

Thanks for the reply CanadianGal!!

I am doing an IR-1 Visa. And of course, the Canadian Consulate will know what the RCMP check looks like! But as I said in an earlier post, I applied DCF at a Consulate OUTSIDE of Canada- which is the only reason I needed a Certified Criminal Record Check- based on fingerprints- to begin with!! Otherwise, I could have done the name and date of birth check without fingerprints. So, I was saying that I'm nervous that the Consulate over here might not know what this thing is supposed to look like, and might suspect it of being a photocopy. since that is exactly what it looks like. They probably don't see too many of these things- the only people who woulw ever submit it are people who happened to live in Canada at one point and are now living out here. So that's why I'm nervous. And unfortunately, since I already had my interview, I can only drop it off at the Consulate's window and am not allowed to go inside, so I won't be there in person to argue that it's the real deal. I really hope they will accept it...

Hope I cleared up some confusion!

Ah I get it so you are outside the United States as well. IS there anyway you can email the consulate and ask them about it? I wish you luck and a fast completion :)

CanadaRCMP Certified Criminal Record Check looks like photocopy!

Thanks for the reply!! Definitely comforting to know that mine is normal. As for the Consualte knowing what it should look like- well, the Canadian obviously would, but since I am abroad- how many people here would be submitting this? Only those who happened to once live in Canada. So who knows if they've seen this...

Which brings me to a question for ya: Which Consulate did you go through? You say you sent it in from the States, but I had thought that those doing AOS from within the States don't even need this document at all! In fact, I just advised a friend doing AOS that he doesn't need it so I want to make sure I gave him the right advice... :-)

Thanks!

Im confused lol

I did a cr-1 Visa and we sent in our application while I was visiting for 5 months. I got my fingerprints done at the local police station in PA then sent them via usps to the RMCP in Ottawa I believe. I emailed them multiple times until I was told it was sent back out to me (60 days). we had our interview (my son and Mine) In Montreal last October. what visa are you doing? Im super confused as all Canadian consulates should know what the RCMP checks look like as well as the US consulate. Where exactly are you living? You are correct as far as I know you do not need one at the AOS stage but i never did it that way so im not sure.

CanadaRCMP Certified Criminal Record Check looks like photocopy!

Hello all,

Alright, so, after FOUR MONTHS of waiting for my RCMP certificate (yes, it took this long because since I am not currently living in Canada I needed to submit fingerprints with ink on paper and mail them in, and applications of this sort take the RCMP 4 months to process) it finally came!! Yay! This is partially a cause for celebration, as my interview was months ago and this document was the last thing in my way to getting my IR-1 Visa (Filed DCF at my home abroad). The only thing is- this document looks VERY unimpressive- in fact, it doesn't even look like an official docuemnt! It's not on nice paper (it's literally on 1 regular piece of paper), it doesn't have any official seal, no original signature, and the whole thing is black and white!! In fact, it looks exactly like a photocopied document! It does say I have no criminal recor and it does have a copy of my fingerprints on it though- but based on what is directly on top, I can see that these are just photocopies of my prints from my application form which I sent in. Not exactly what I was expecting after 4 months of processing...

Has anyone here applied for the RCMP Certified Criminal Check, which is based on fignerprints (usually only needed if applying from outside of Canada or if one has a criminal record)? Does my description match what this thing is supposed to look like? Will the U.S. Consulate give me any trouble over the fact that this thing looks VERY unofficial and even like a photocopy? I'm kind of nervous about it, cause if they don't accept it I have no idea what else I can use to prove to them I have no crimial record, and don't know how else I can get my visa.

Anyone here with experience with this document- your replies would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you VJers!!

I actually had to go search for the photocopy i have of it.. Yup thats what mine looked like. No special stamp or anything. Four finger prints along with your name and result on a plain piece of paper. I had no problems with mine and I am pretty sure they know what it looks like. Good luck :)

Btw I had a past record and sent mine in from The states... yours look a long time (mine took 60 days to send and receive back).

Weird, that's what i used and it worked. When i went to pick up the visa's the lady at the office said the telephone inquire people are not really up to speed on things and may give you wrong information.

I think you will have them by Wednesday of next week.

Agreed!... I was checking none stop for an update on the usvisa site but never got an update. I then saw the dhl.ca site and used the reference number. It worked for me...

CanadaMontreal didn't give me a waybill number

Hi Tim and Erin: We interviewed in Montreal (K1) last Friday (19th), were approved, and did not receive a waybill number either. Still no tracking number on the website for us, and our reference ID on dhl.ca is not working either :( A little frustrating: the interview notice says usually 3 business days, the lady who interviewed us told us 4-7 days.

Looking back at the timelines of other VJ members who interviewed after this DHL thing started with Montreal, it looks like most people are picking up their passports 7 days after their interview. Since today is a holiday, I'm guessing for us, it will take about 8 days.

Big SIGH. This waiting is tough!! Good luck with yours! I'll post once mine is available for pickup. Please do the same! Thanks, and Happy (American) Thanksgiving.

It also depends where you are located and what dhl location you picked.
CanadiandggalFemaleCanada2010-11-25 16:33:00
CanadaMontreal didn't give me a waybill number

Ok, did that, and it has my ref. number under "shipment #" and "piece #" and under "status" it says "shipment/waybill not found." There is nothing in the other boxes. I need one of you guys to assure me that DHL does indeed HAVE my waybill number. I'm assuming that nothing would show up in any of those boxes if they didn't have it.

Do Not worry, I assure you that your package will not get lost, however they do not update their system that often. Try back again later.

Can we still do Xpress Post instead of DHL? The closest DHL location is 1 1/2 hours from my husband, and we would rather wait to have it delivered directly to his house.
Has anyone done this?

I am not sure. You were still able to use them In October. I would bring one along, I brought one but ended up going with dhl as It was assured to me that DHL would be quicker and in my case it was. I did have to drive an hour to get them But i was leaving ten days after my interview so I did not want to gamble.

CanadaMontreal didn't give me a waybill number

What can I do today to find out if my visa is ready to be picked up? I just realized that Montreal Embassy did not give me a waybill number so I can track my delivery. I called DHL and they said they can't do anything without that waybill number. Tim and I would love to head home to the States as soon as possible, especially since the weather is supposed to turn nasty the next couple days. :( AND the Embassy is closed today for the Thanksgiving holiday. :crying:

Go here:
http://www.usvisa-in...lfservice/login
Look for a reference number... take that reference number and go to www.dhl.ca. put reference number in tracking box for reference numbers :)

they don't give you one
log in here

http://www.usvisa-in...country_welcome

you will need your passport number , your date of birth etc

you should see a REFERENCE ID,

once you have that, go to www.dhl.ca
and enter your reference id in the reference field, it will let you know if it is ready to be picked up

mine took about 5 business days to get back

:)

Great minds think alike :)

CanadaAdditional documentation

I had my interview at the Montreal consulate on July 7th and I was denied because I didn't have my husband's 2010 tax return. She said everything looked good and I just needed the tax form. They kept my passport and said I would get it once I mailed the additional paperwork. I have sent it and DHL says it was delivered last friday. Does anyone know about how long I will have to wait before my visa is issued?
Thanks

atleast a few weeks.. They like to open their mail when they feel like it.

CanadaCurrent wait time for Montreal CR1 Visa Interviews?

Hi All,

Does anyone know what the current turnaround for CR1 Visa Interviews in Montreal?

The reason I'm asking is I just got my NOA2. We are planning to make the move in the first part of 2012 (March/April) due to some obligations I have. I wasn't expecting such a quick NOA2 (Thank God though!)

Not sure if I should take my time through NVC or if I'll be okay to have an interview around January?

Thanks all

J

You should be fine. Even if you were to get an interview in december, you would have 6 months to cross over. Thats far past the time you want to move so you should be a Ok

CanadaChanging my info with Canada Revenue

FYI that you are not entitled to receive the CTB or the GST/HST credit as soon as you become a non resident (the day you move down here). They will make you pay it back when they figure out the date you left. Save yourself the trouble of having to pay them back and call them to tell them you are no longer a resident now and have them stop payments. CTB is actually a separate branch and they don't seem to talk to the regular CRA folks....it took them a long time to figure it it with me (I didn;t know gtaht I should ahve called them) and I ended up having to pay back every $ that I received after moving....which sucked because it had been long spent.

I have to second this... except I called them before I left and they still sent me money and I had to call them a second time.

CanadaChanging my info with Canada Revenue

I'm a little confused...I was reading past topics about this NR73 form and whether to fill it out or not. I gathered the best answer was just NOT to do it, rather to just note on my tax return the day I left Canada. However, I still receive a GST/HST plus Child Tax Benefits for the next few months. Do I still change my info with them on this??? Wouldn't they require me to fill out a NR73 if they see that I am leaving the country on those forms anyway?

i called everyone and just informed them that I moved to the states. Child tax,Gst etc.

Canadak1-ers waiting for Montreal

Hey everyone!

Hopefully someone following this thread can help with this. I'm signed on to the Visa service website, but there was never any page that came up to confirm a DHL location. I was able to select the consulate and the type of visa, but there was never anything that came up for DHL. I just get sent to my applicant summary page. Any ideas what to do?

give it a few days then log back in and try again. This is a bit of a bug and has happen to a few people before.

CanadaCrossing Boder after NOA1

Pretty sure I wasnt sending off any signals...I get they are doing their job..I come from a long family of cops actually so I know what they are looking for.:)I use 2 crossings and I simply find one of the crossings the officers are jacka...the other ive never had a problem...

And i get kids will be honest but whether a 9 yr old "approves" completely inappropriate. Alot of 9 yr olds have issues with change and new step-parents. Luckily my DS loves my FI...ask him where hes going? who hes going to see? if hes been there before? when hes going home? but whether he approves...

I was simply asking IF "alien fiances/fiancees" get flagged in anyway...

They sometimes ask some odd questions... I remember the one and only time we had a bit of a poop time getting through they sent us to secondary. This older gentleman proceeded to ask my 3 year old son if he liked "moms husband" My son stared at him blankly for a good couple of minutes then cried for his daddy. I proceeded to tell the officer that he had no clue who "moms Husband" was as to him that is his daddy not to mention he was 3. he would probably still act that way lol

Hate to barge in this thread without reading the details first, but, are you saying you are upset because you pay $2,000 more at closing when they dropped your purchase price $22,000 from 80k to 58k?

I might be reading it wrong but that's what it sounds like to me....If it makes you feel better I bought a house for $20,000 and paid around $4,400 in closing costs which did not go towards the principal. Although I did get $1700 back because it was set aside for escrow repairs (but the repairs cost about that anyway)...

Now all we have to do is hope the Lender okies the price since its a short sale. we have time to wait for a bit in our apartment. 3 months about. I can only hope since its just a matter of ONLY then accepting and negotiating price that it wont take longer than that, but i know it can. But so far so good eh? :)

CanadaJuvenile record

While she was a juvenile, my wife was charged (on different occasions) with both assault and weapons dangerous (which, in Canadian lingo, is possession of a dangerous weapon - I think.)
She was pardoned for both.

Neither is a felony.

What might the impact be for our immigration? We're filling out the DS-260 (online version of the NVC questionnaire) and it asks for details. What should we say? I'd hate for this to bar her immigration.

Honest is always best. I was a juvenile charged with a simple assault and breech of probation but I have no clue on the weapons charge. I would read up and look closely http://travel.state....ties_1364.html. Also google what charges are a moral turpitude as they tend to be more harsh.
what type of assault charge was it?

As for what to put for details, make it simple, "Charged as a juvenile with two charges. One simple assault charge due to a fight at school, One possession of weapon as I was carrying a "knife/gun,screwdriver".

I cannot say that it will have no impact or a large impact. Just make sure she has court records along with police records if you can get them. Make sure to know if it was a summary offense as well.

Yeah I am a tad confused as to why you would need to apply for a child when you are a us citizen. If born a us citizen then your child be automatically be a us citizen and if you recently got us citizen then he would again get us citizenship through you as said child is under 18.

CanadaOHIP ?/dumb question...

"It was sooooo nice to be able to have that time with my baby after she was born. Standard Mat leave here in the US is 12 weeks....UNPAID. "

And you only get that 12 weeks if you meet the FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) eligibility:

"The FMLA entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave. You must work for a covered employer; have worked for the employer for a total of 12 months; have worked at least 1,250 hours over the previous 12 months; and work at a location in the United States or in any territory or possession of the United States where at least 50 employees are employed by the employer within 75 miles."

So really FMLA isn't worth the paper it's written on because the majority of employers aren't 'covered'. You'll get sticker shock at the price of health insurance premiums here, the co-pays, and the fact most insurance only pays 80% of your bill.

Having a baby even with insurance can be rather expensive.. lol Ive been getting a bill every other day for the past two weeks. BOOOOOOO!!!!

The moment you move you are no longer covered through OHIP. However you could use chip or there are a few other problems here. Also my husbands insurance company will take people on if your pregnant, Im pretty sure they all will now. You could get temp insurance for in between as well.

where can I find the list of what vaccinations I should have? I saw a list once, but it seemed awfully long, and I considered it could be different for Canadians. Also, when I went to school in the US, I was required to have several vaccinations. Does anyone know if this is the same requirement? Same experience? Also, how does one go about getting records of vaccinations? I moved to a different province when I was 7 and I have no idea where they are....

As for where to get records...If you went to school at some point in Canada most cases the local health department (Local to where you went to school and lived when you were growing up.) I am not sure about the states though, I mean I just used the washington county health department the othere day and they seem to do the same as Canada. Call around :)

Canadadriver's license - what happens with a probationary?

OH EXCELLENT! I had looked up what was needed for me to change my licence and was so worried about having to do a driving test even though it didn't say I needed it on the DMV site (it is called the DMV right?) Anyway, I am also in Maryland and about to do this myself and you made my day! (I am a good driver, I just panic in stressful situations, and though I am fine driving around in Annapolis on my own or with my husband, having someone grade me everything I do freaks me out!)

LOl I took my road test in Toronto 2 months before I moved here, I would have hated doing another road test (nerves)
Yeah Maryland has a thing with Canada and they consider it an out state transfer. Its the Mva here, confuses me how they have two different names lol Good luck :)

Canadadriver's license - what happens with a probationary?

I had the "G2" which is not a full license and its from Ottawa.

I was given a FULL state license and only had to answer 25 correctly of 30 questions on computerized test ( much easier than the questions in Canada no less ).

This was in the state of NE.

Yup depends on State. I had a G2 license and Here in Maryland All I had to do was take a vision test. :)

CanadaToday's the Day!

My husband received a 221g and was informed his case needed administrative processing.

They did not tell him why. They did not indicate if anything was missing. They did not indicate any particular document was needed. They let him keep his passport and told him they would ask for it back when they needed it.

What does this mean for us? I don't understand.

Seems like they are doing father processing in his case, odd that they didnt tell him why or that anything was needed. If anything is needed they will send him a letter requesting it. I would call dos often
