CanadaOntario OHIP question...

My husbands insurance covers me and I'm still Canadian. It's a minimal rate extra to what he'd pay as a single beneficiary of the health insurance. It could just be my husbands work but he said that it wasn't uncommon to have a out of Country person on the Insurance. I have had no issues/ ungodly payments for health care here. I get my medication now in the US as I'm no longer covered in Canada. My husband just brings it with him when he comes to visit.

I guess I'm shocked that it would be 500$ extra.

why are you no longer covered in canada?

CanadaOntario OHIP question...

OUR HEALTHCARE ISN'T FREE!

I wish people would stop saying that.

I agree.
not too mention that one day Ontario will HAVE to change the health care system. The money will run out one day, and everything will start to cost.

CanadaOntario OHIP question...
It depends On the doctor at the er, I was not charged :) But it was a very sad day so.

My husband works with a international huge company and when i get there next week he will add my son and myself to his company coverage and the family coverage is 180.00 every two weeks for dental, vision and health. I thought wow that is steep but we could have 5 children and still only pay 180.00 semi monthly. I do not want something to happen and Us be stuck with a huge bill plus we plan on getting pregnant asap and we cannot afford to deliever in a hospital without coverage , heck if I dont have coverage I will be doing it at home by myself and i dont want that (I want a epidoral lol)

CanadaWHEN will this wait end...waiting for an interview date?!

Soooo...I know that a million of you are going through the same thing right now but this is so frusturating! All of the steps are complete and we are just waiting for a interview date.

It blows my mind that they make you wait FOREVER for what seems like a 10 minute interview just so that my husband can come over and we can start living our lives together. Is there anyway we can find out information?? Our NVC case was complete in October and still no word :(

Is there anything we should be doing?? I just want my husband here!! We are planning our "Real Family Wedding" for May and I really need him here now. We are paying double rent right now just because of this stupid wait...we really could use the extra money for the big wedding. Sorry to go on and on, i'm just really wonderfing what is going on?

Hope everyone's process is going well...Happy Holidays to everyone :)

I am very sorry that everyone is still waiting. I waited something like 4 months to hear an interview date...5 months from case complete to interview. Right now it looks like they are only at the July/August Case completes so You may still have some wait. I hope this is not the case and that you will hear something soon

CanadaDHL Registration

Yes, I pick a location and when I log in it shows that location. Is it normal that under the "Appointment Information" heading, it says that I have no date scheduled? I do have an interview date because I received a letter.

Thank you very much for your response and help!

Yes because you were scheduled through NVC and not the site, you will not see your current date. It happens to us all that were scheduled through NVC. Dont worry :)

CanadaDHL Registration

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure what I did when it came to the last steps of entering my info. I saw a next available date and then it asked me if I had the right to change my interview date. I closed the window and started freaking out. Right now when I log in, it says that I currently have no appointment scheduled and that the next available date is in March. I received a letter a month ago stating that I had an interview this December.

Thank you for replying.

Ok than you are Fine, Do not worry about it and just bring your appointment letter with you on your interview date. You picked your dhl location though right? :)
CanadiandggalFemaleCanada2010-12-01 08:01:00
CanadaDHL Registration

I tried to register for a DHL location and I'm afraid I might have changed my interview date by accident. Is there a number to call to make sure that I still have my original date? If not, how would I go about finding out my interview date? I sent an email to the consulate but they say allow 2 weeks for a response. My interview is on Dec. 13, 2010 which does not leave me a lot of time. What should I do?

Ok explain why you think you changed your date..

When you register for dhl it is going to tell you the next available date as long as you do not pick a date you should be ok... Log back in and see if it still says next available date.

CanadaStarting CR-1 process........sigh

My fiance and I were planning our wedding in April 2011 until we looked at the timeline for completion of my visa (he is American, I am Canadian--we live in our respective countries but are only 20 minutes apart). Sooooo, long story short, we called a wedding commissioner in Canada and had her meet us at Santa's workshop in the local mall where we "eloped"! We are waiting for our marriage certificate to arrive in the mail so we can send off our petition with all the documentation asap and get this ball rolling. (We still plan to have a "wedding" in April and are trying to keep our actually marriage a secret from most of our family so they are not too upset with us for eloping  )
Once we do this (hopefully as soon as next Monday) we will need to show more difinitively my "strong ties" to Canada when I cross the border which I do on most weekends. Unfortunately, my lease agreement expires January 31/11 at which time I will be month-to-month (does not look like very "strong ties") and I'm currently unemployed (my former husband passed away and I am living on his pension and insurance money). I plan to start working in January which I believe will help establish my ties to Canada but in the meantime, is it enough to show copies of our submitted petition--to prove that we are going about this process the right/legal way? Are there other documents I can show? I want to avoid being denied entry if at all possible.

I know I will have many more questions as we go through this. This website has been so incredibly helpful so far! I intend to spend a lot more time reading all your stories and advice. Thank you everyone for saving me the lawyers fees that we were planning to spend!!!

Congrats on getting married. The more you bring the better. Bring all your noa's/a copy of your documents for immigration, lease, phone, utilities, car lease, even letters from friends and family. Anything that is recent and has your address, I was lucky to never have much of a problem but it does happen. You seem prepared so :)

Hi,
I have a friend waiting for her interview (her case was completed August 10th) and I was just wondering. When I had went for my interview 5 years ago I received my visa the next day in my passport. Do they still do this? or has the process changed? Can someone please explain to me what it is she should be prepared for and how long she should be prepared to stay. If they still give the visa the next day she will stay the extra day.

FYI She is on a CR1

Thanks,
melliemel

No they do not usually do that anymore. they have a new mailing system DHL that usually takes 2-10 business days but no Guarantees. There has been a few people that have gotten their visas back the next day but that was usually due to emergency situations however there is no harm in asking at the interview.

Not much - we roast ceremonial beavers weekly and drink icewine martini's and maple syrup - good party! :P

If you're moving to northern Virginia or DC - you're in good company - many of us here!

Hey I am in Maryland..and Im good company....hmmm maybe I am not lol

Oh god, please tell me there's a buffet of soft maple candies

I figured as much, good to know my bio gets done at the airport though. I wasn't sure where they'd do it.

Yeah someone told me airports are more of a hassle but you will do great :)

CanadaPOE Question

Your POE would be at Pearson. When you go through US Customs, let them know you are coming in on the CR-1 visa and they will send you to secondary behind the closed doors. Allow 2-3 hours extra in order to make your flight, depending on when you're flying.

I'm going to move your thread to the Canada Regional Forum so you can get some first-hand accounts.

Welcome to VJ. :)

I was just in the process of writing please come to the Canadian forums.../could someone move this to the Canadian forums

CanadaPOE Question

I usually fly with a connection to the states out of Pearson International in Ontario. I usually end up in Washington Dulles, Charlotte, or Reagan.

What would my POE be? Maybe a dumb question, but I want to be clear.

I always speak with American customs at Pearson (before dropping off my luggage, carry-on screening, etc).

So where would I be getting my stamps done at the very end of CR1? The way I interpreted POE was it's the point of entry in the U.S. - when I land in Jacksonville for example, it's straight from gate to waiting area to find my boyfriend - no customs. When I land in the U.S. do I have to go somewhere specific to get my stamps?

A little confused

You would poe at Pearson International to my knowledge. Where are you moving too? I am guessing DC or NVA...?

Well unfortunately we just don't have the $500 to spare and we will have check in points at each bus stop and I have my cell phone, none of the stops are at night etc.... I wouldn't take my son on a trip that wasn't safe. And I can sleep just fine on the bus and I plan to so I would not be sleep deprived. Although if we can find some good seat sales apparently the bus line has a fee you can pay to ship a few boxes so we might do that and fly... either way just need to know all my options... Still haven't gotten the bus company to give me a straight answer... and can't find the # for Detroit POE

It is because of the route I was on.... seems like if you go to dc it cuts 2 hours off the time. I just did a greyhound search from Toronto to Hagerstown and it said 18 hours but if you do Toronto to Washington it say 15 hours.

CanadaPOE

On the flip side, my POE took no more than 15 minutes. I was in a car with my husband, no bus situation to deal with, but everything went lightening fast. It really depends on what time of day and what day of the week you will be traveling. Early in the morning is a lot better than mid day, and Sunday for example is a lot better than Friday. Do you have a date and time set for travel?

And just for a not-so-funny comparison, I went to Phoenix last weekend for the Nascar race, and we flew. And we just live in Colorado... But I did drive down from Ontario when I moved. It was long but worth it.

My poe was about 30-45 Minutes long. It was nice and the border crossing was super small which ended up being a plus. They did not do the visa process very often so she was going off a guide. very nice people.
Look into what POE you will be crossing at and give them a quick call. I called the massena Ny border the day I was poeing to make sure that they processed visas.

CanadaDid you ever get 'screwed' ordering from a website?

Alright, here's the story...

Last week I found Chris' cologne on this site, fragrancecosmetic.com. I can't find it anywhere, so I got very excited and ordered it. The site seems safe, McAfee put a little green check mark beside it, you can pay with pay pal and all that fun stuff.
BUT, they sent me an e-mail with the tracking number and everything, and it still does not appear on USPS... I e-mailed them, asking them what the h*ll was going on (not in those words), and they e-mailed me back saying that once the package would be received in the postal office of distribution where I live, it would appear online... I'm thinking that doesn't make sense, and I got screwed on that one...
Has anyone ever bought anything from them? Or had similar experiences?

I wouldn't worry just yet, I have ordered quite a few things over the past month and have had different tracking situations. Usps doesnt tend to update there system too often. Hang in there :)

CanadaPaper work needed for Non-USC spouse.

I am an USC and planning to marry my Canadian finance in Feb. We have talked to a Lawyer and it will cost $3000 including form fees. She will be going back to Canada after and then we will be filing the forms. As of now we think we will be doing the paper work ourselves to save money. I will file a I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative)with the G325A (Biographic Information) and I-864EZ (Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the Act.

We were told going about it this way she will have to go to Montreal for a solo interview to be approved and it’s possible she could be living here by next Christmas. Do these steps sound about right and do you file the 130 at the same time as the 864? Am I missing anything? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the wonderful Canada forum :)

As said above a lawyer is not the way to go in most cases, compare the prices 3000 for a lawyer or zero for all of our help :) I pick the free one!

You will be doing the Cr-1 process, the guides are very helpful and so are the people. Please use the search egnine when you are stuck on an issue, in most cases someone has asked the same question as you along the way. If your head is spinning out of control with confusion feel free to ask any questions as we are all very willing to help out a fellow Vjer. At the moment the Cr-1 process is taking a bit more time than usual but hopefully by the time you are at that stage the backlog will be over with. Right now from start to finish the Cr-1 journey is approximately 1 year. You will be sending the i-130 and g325a at the same time, the i130 cr-1 guide will explain it all. Once your I-130 is approved you will move onto the next stage and send in the i-863ez and the Ds230 package, then the next stage will be the interview.
Congrats on your upcoming marriage
Good luck :P

If you did EP you will receive an email with your date or telling you to schedule it online. You can also call into NVC every once and awhile to see if the are scheduling interviews for the next month. Just hang in there and enjoy the ride :)

Stupid question..probably but I am curious as to where everyone keeps there green card. I just got my sons and mine in the mail. "happy happy"
They are definitely small enough to put in my wallet but I do not want to ruin them or on the off chance that I misplace my purse I do not want to lose them. They were sent with a odd small envelope to shove them in for "protection and to prevent wireless communication with it" One can communicate through my card?

Anyways thanks guys

CanadaDHL Set Up

Me too .

Before our interview in October we Registered and picked our Interview date and as well as picked the closest DHL Location.
That location was confirmed in the letter of confirmation from the Embassy about our interview

Then we got interviewed.
We were not approved as the embassy required me to submit another document.

In order to mail documents to Consulate,

I need a Reference No. or Applicant ID as per CSC to bring it to DHL when I mailed my documents.
I logged in to:http://usvisa-info.com

After I logged in, this is what I see:

Applicant Information

You have not entered your personal information.

Appointment Information

You currently have no appointment scheduled.

What would you like to do?

* Schedule Appointment
* Add Family Members

I was looking for the Applicant ID on the as per instruction that:

Applicant ID: This number is displayed on the Applicant Summary page
of CSC’s website at http://usvisa-info.com once the applicant logs in.

I dont have the Applicant ID.

Well, still I went to DHL and mailed my docs and isntead I put my Case Number in the Reference Number.
I have no choice I have to send these requirements ASAP.
I tracked it and they got it.

However, I still need to find out why I did not have an Application ID once my VISA is approved.

Please advice if anybody knows the workaround on this.

GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Ugh.... you do not get a applicant ID, just a Reference ID. You should have got the reference ID the day you signed up for dhl I believe.

CanadaDHL Set Up

Hi,
I am writing on behalf of my friend.

She just received her interview letter for January 12th and she was setting up her account for the DHL service. She began setting it up and when it asks for the reason she choose "permanently immigrating to the US (NVC)" (can't remember the exact wording) is this correct? When she went to schedule and the first available date was March 22 2011...is this correct? What is this whole set up exactly for?

Help on this will be greatly appreciated. This is new to me. When I did my immigration stuff 5 years ago we got our visa the next day.

Thanks again...

On behalf of JenNiaz...

Yes putting permanent immigrant scheduled by NVC is correct, then she would fill out the personal information as well as pick a dhl location. when she sees the next available date she can log out and it should be saved. If she logs back in it should say her name, and passport number with "no scheduled date" underneath

CanadaUsing a Nexus Card to Avoid POE

I thought I'd add to this post as yesterday I activated my visa for my move on the 28th. I also want a nexus pass.

I was told there would be no problem activating my visa CR1 and then moving. I have to move with my parrots and have them Vet checked so I didn't want another wait for activating the visa. We have a long drive to San Diego so the less time waiting the better.

I went to Peace Arch crossing in Blaine Washington yesterday to do this. I encountered a CBP agent who hassled me for not doing it when I moved. I was told " do you know the number of people who do this and never move ". I expressed that having gone through this process for over a year and a half that my intention IS moving to live with my husband or I never would have gone through this long wait. I also explained the reasons politely for doing it this way. He still hesitated. I then asked " is this allowed or not?" He then said yes and went to process it and then said I can't see you in the system. I thought I was going to throw up. After confirming all the info in my packet he said oh that is your husbands name, okay I will do it. Sometimes I wonder if they are on a power trip . I asked about NEXUS and YES you can pass with that.

Maybe at this time of year there are some unusually GRUMPY CPB agents . The couple who had the agent beside me had a very helpful agent I wished I had got him.

This should be a simple process with all the info they have by now!

Congrats on doing your poe before.. I did mine the day before the move as I too did not want to wait and then drive for ever. I wish you luck on the big day.

I see no problems with you using your nexus without using the visa, I have read that people use their enhanced drivers license while montreal still has their passport so Why not.

CanadaSocial Security Number Timing

Just wanted to give everyone a perspective on timing for Social Security numbers.
My husband had his CR-1 interview in Montreal on November 30. He did his POE on Friday, December 3.
He received his social security card on Tuesday, December 14.
We were pleasantly surprised by how quickly he got it. Now we just have to go about building his credit!

Grats mine came quite quickly too.
I am on the same mind track, need to build some awesome credit now he he .
Grats on your approval and poe :)
