my year in glasgow was a sad year for the part of my heart that is in love with mexican food. we did make do. we learned to make a lot of things at home. jamie makes very good beans now. yum! and i am now able to make a pretty decent salsa (and i grow the ingredients in my garden!) and, though we did not discover it soon enough, we did visit the mexican grocery/deli on the great western road several times.

we had a particulary bad meal in stirling, but it was entertaining. i asked for hot sauce when our meal came and the waitress was puzzled. she returned after a minute with the kitchen's mini-vat of hot sauce and deposited it at the table. <3 (it wasnt really hot. just red.)

and damian, are you posting these recommendations as you discover them? is this a meal by meal account of your days in the us? did you have a reuben for lunch and a steak with a-1 sauce for dinner? : D

i didnt know about the HFCS in miracle whip. ack! i need to start looking more carefully for that on labels. (among the 8 million other things im reading labels for!)

speaking of labels, one thing i miss about the uk is the food labeling, which personally, i thought was better in some ways. specifically, since i am vegetarian, it A LOT easier to just look for 'suitable for vegetarians' on the packaging. what i had a hard time with was sometimes figuring out nutritional content. like often times they gave nutritional values for 100g of the product, and then i had to multiply and divide out to estimate numbers. sometimes, they did give values for the whole package or for a seving (but that seemed more rare to me?).

also, i think the EU requires MSG to be labeled as E612 which is a lot more specific than the ridiculously vague 'natural flavorings' that MSG is labeled under in the US. i know its not medically proven, but things with MSG tend to make me feel a bit ill, so i try to avoid them. it was easier to do in the uk.

ps. ugh. i just checked my nantucket nectar's half-n-half (iced tea and lemonade) to see what the label said and while there is no HFCS listed, it does have natural flavorings. <sigh> i think that term is a little too broad.

and i guess, to try to keep this on topic, does anybody have a peanut butter recommendation? jamie is fine with almost everything about coming here, but he is slighty peeved at the idea of a lifetime of 'too-sweet' american peanut butter. i think in the end we will just end up eating the natural peanut butter, which is just fine with me.

pre-edit: ive found an old thread that addresses the sweetness issue. 10 pages long so ill check there.

the only thing that is unclear is the REASON for the denial. where is the slip? you must find out the denial reason.

if it is material misrepresentation, thats bad bad news. you will need a lawyer and something like $5000 to see if this can be overcome. im not sure you understand the
how serious material misrepresentation is. it cannot be excused by claiming that you were young and stupid.

im sorry if my sympathy for you is not abundant. not only did you knowingly lie to USCIS,whats worse you lied to your husband.

oops. bringing out the angry CAPS doesnt make people wanna help. we know youre hurting but please be civil.

the i-130 was signed by you. by signing as the petitioner you were attesting that your petition was completed with truthful information. answering a question that asks if you have ever been married before with a 'no' is a lie. you knew that, no matter what you lawyer made you do. so let us not muddy those waters too much.

you need to find out for certain why the visa was denied so that if you do refile, you are able to overcome that issue (if possible).

head over to i2us.net. they have far more expertise with denials, bans and waivers. you will find better help there.

you are probably going to need a lawyer who specializes in immigration law and specifically with denials. it will not be cheap.

you need to inform yourself thoroughly. you were underprepared and now things are pretty complicated.

you will get responses in these forums that may be hard to hear, but they will be things you need to know to move forward.

United Kingdomuk 'packet 3' question
hi all.

so today, jamie (UKC) and i (USC) had our very first 'squabble' on the subject of this whole visa process. i think it was mostly stress and self-imposed deadlines, but i felt bad because i could have probably prevented it by being more informed/organized. i am feeling slightly pissy because i am more informed about the details of the process than he is, even though he is the one who need to prep for the interview. (im also pissy because he doesnt make use of vj and therefore i have to learn all of these things and then tell him what i have learned. im sure that some of the fine details are lost in the translation.) i thought he was on top of returning 'packet 3' and this afternoon i call and he seems unsure as to what to send. we worked out what we are sending, but id love to have some reassurance that we havent missed anything major.

here is what he is sending tomorrow (16 march):

DS-230 part I [sending part I only. sending in duplicate, though i think that is unnecessary.]
DS-156 with color photo attached, in duplicate [one photo per copy is all that is required, right?]
DS-156k in duplicate
DS-157 in duplicate
checklist and IV-15 completed [i am confused about the difference between these, but i treat them as one 2-page document.]
letter requesting a late april interview for an early may entry [he did not want to 'queue jump' anyone else. i said that we are not asking for an early date, we are just trying to avoid a late date. we do have a date in mind that we would like, but we can work around whatever we get.]

i think that's it. and i keep telling him (and myself) that if there is anything missing, we can resend and it should not trip us up too much.

any comments would be sincerely appreciated.

-lisabette.

:: hugs :: Thank you, Lisabette. You've been lovely in all of this -- I'm grateful for VJ because there are people like you who are wonderfully supportive.

All I can do now is hope and pray the interview goes well.

Magpie.

i cant imagine, with your level of organization and thoroughness, that you will have any problem with the interview. you have all of your documents in order (either in hand or on their way) and you are well-prepared for any questions raised about your birth certificate.

personally, though i am not all the way through this, nor am i the interviewee, nor do we have many complications with our application, i have found this part, between the NOA2 and the interview, to be a lot less scary and overwhelming than the process of filing the I-129F. just sort of bobbing along now.

thinking about it, i think my current peace of mind is probably due in great part to this place. i knew about and dabbled in vj for a couple of years. but until i got the NOA2, i think i was too scared to get my hopes up, because it would have been devastating to get denied. and even if that wasnt very probable, it was horrible to think about. so once that fear was dispatched, i could come here and feel part of it. i probably should have joined/posted earlier, but... i didnt. oh well.

i do think that you have quite a bit of supporting evidence (school records, police statements, etc) for the missing birth certificate. i am not worried for you anymore. you are informed and prepared. i think you will be able to satisfy the embassy. plus, it seems to me that if you have gotten this far along with out too much hassle about it, that you should move through this next part with no major problems.

thanks for the update. i worry about people here and these sorts of things. so it feels good to know you that you are feeling better about it all.

Well thank you for noticing. He will be pleased with the compliment. When I adopted him, his whiskers looked like somebody had cut them all off with scissors and inch and a half long. Then I figured out they were just snapping off, I guess from malnourishment, since he was picked up as a stray adult. He had all kinds of parasites and yukky things. But eventually he grew fresh new *fancy* whiskers.

oh no. this reminds me of a friend whose child had... oh jeez.. cut off the family cat's whiskers. oh no. from what i hear, this is no good because cats need them for balance and sensing danger or something. (im not a cat expert.)

im glad they grow back, though.
