Amazing, I am going to be stealing this if I may?!

I didn't realise courier fee was cash only too, that's useful to know. They tell you that in packet 4?

Right, I'd better go to work...

this checklist is an amalgamation of all of the info i have come across. ive tried to only include 'verified' information and 'best practices'.

i dont know if that info is mentioned in 'packet 4'. i read in the interview thread that boht credit cards and cash (USD or sterling) were accepted for the visa fee, but it was cash only for the courier fees.

so i just created this list in open office. im pleased with myself. im certain it has been done before and done to death, but i figure cant hurt to post another take on it.

thank you, ms. magpie, for reminding me to make a REAL checklist. seems more official. i made it for jamie so he can feel organized about everything. mine is not as pretty as yours, but i may make it look foxy later on when i get the content all settled.

anyways, thought id share, because i am always appreciative of other people's methods.

let's see. how do i wedge a scan in here?

ooh! ooh! i did it!

i know i may be including too much stuff, but we all know why.

if i revise it, ill post an update. that is if anyone cares. : p

i agree with marty, THREE to five weeks. ours was about 3 weeks after 'packet 3'. start calling the DOS in a couple of weeks (15 may) to see if your interview is on the system.

as for the I-134 problem, do the best you can with the primary sponsor's evidence, but have very solid co-sponsor evidence (and a I-134 of course) with you at the interview to ensure an approval.

that $200-300 is appalling. awful.

Tax returns:

If you use something like Turbo Tax to complete your return, it will generate tons of notes and worksheets. I never print all that. My return this year would have been 77 pages if I let Turbo Tax print it all. What you show the Embassy is only what you actually mail in to the IRS, if your mailing a paper return. The real forms would look like this:

Form 1040 is two pages http://www.irs.gov/p...0.pdf?portlet=3
That's the basic return, but depending on your income or how you choose to file, you could also have:

Schedule A if you itemize deductions
Schedule B if you earn interest on savings or own stocks
Both on this http://www.irs.gov/p...df/f1040sab.pdf

Schedule D if you sell stocks or have other investment gains http://www.irs.gov/p...pdf/f1040sd.pdf

Schedule C if self employed http://www.irs.gov/p...pdf/f1040sc.pdf

There's some other things like Earned Income Credit, but I've never used those. Anyway, the IRS forms will have that similar looking numbering in the top corners, left and right...OMB number, Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service. Most have an "attachment sequence" number on the right so you know what order to put the extra sheets in, following the 1040. If it doesn't look like that or says Turbo Tax or H&R Block, it's just extra junk that isn't a tax return.

A W2 is a statement from the employer, of wages earned in the whole year. It is normally small like a half page or quarter page. You staple that to the front page of the form 1040 if mailing in taxes.

If the person who sent you the return still has a copy at home, then you don't need to make another. Just turn in the one. Example: I can print off my returns from Turbo tax all day long, so no need for my fiance to copy and take two sets to the embassy. So ask him/her if that's the only copy of the tax return in the whole world. If not, then it won't matter if you hand it over because there's another copy in the US. Does that make sense? Only make copies of things that are original or not easily replaced if you gave it away.

77 pages. did you have the font size set at 64 by accident? : p

i have decided that i have figured out what you do for a living, ms. nich. i think you write ALL of the wikipedia articles. : D smart girl.

omg. yes. (we think) we got approved.

when vj'ers tell you that the interview is 'anticlimactic', for jamie at least, that appears to be a major understatement! he finished the interview portion and paid the courier fees, and then was left wondering... 'uh? am i done?' we are assuming that since we did not get a blue (?) slip, that we were approved. i am waiting until the passport shows up with a (CORRECT and not wrong-numbered) visa shows up in maccly-wackly (aka macclesfield) to start the celebrating in earnest. said celebration will probably include (though not on my 'lets try to fit in to our pants/trousers diet') and but not , cause that's not my bag.

and thank you to anyone who cared enough to think of jamie (and me!) today. i found more support here than i did in my real life, though my mom was really great about it. : ) very excited.

They say in the P4 instructions we got not to arrive more than 30 minutes early. Everybody lines up outside and somebody goes down the line kinda checking the line. They used to have signs for lining up by time slots. 8:30 line, 9:00 line, etc and wouldn't let you get in line earlier than maybe 30 minutes. When we went they didn't do that...it was basically first come, first in the door. I suppose if he went too early and they told him to get out of line, he could go to one of the coffee shop places on N. Audley St near where the line-up place is. He does know not to take his mobile phone and car keys, doesn't he? He should leave them at the friends house or check them at Gould's Pharmacy on N. Audley.
Here's the MAP again. Zoom in on the Embassy and you'll see N. Audley. The line starts closer to the north east corner of that block where the embassy is marked.

Paperwork: He gets called to a window...often Window 1, with the short lady people have trouble hearing and understanding. She takes all the papers, passport photos, and the passport. If he hands her birth certificate/copy, police report/copy, employment letter/copy, divorce decree/copy, she knows what they are. He only needs to give photocopies of things he wants back. The I-134 will only be the original only. She's the one who takes all the documents on the checklist, sticks the photos on the form he mailed in, and generally gets the file in order for the Immigration Officer while he goes to another window to pay for the visa. Then he gives her the receipt showing payment and he sits until the interview. That's at a third window in the back room. The IO should give back his originals at that time because he's looked over everything just prior to calling Jamie to the window. If he doesn't remember to, Jamie should ask for them. I think that's how it goes. The first call to the window is just the paper gathering lady who organizes what she needs for the interviewer. If you give her more than she needs, she'll hand the extras back and prompt him if he doesn't give enough. (Like she gave back alot of the financial stuff to Nick, but said "where's the employer letter"). The interviewer is the one who will actually evaluate the papers submitted. Everybody has different papers and evidence of finances, so this is only a general idea of how it goes.

thanks, ms. nich.

at the interview, is it safe to assume that, in general, the CO at the embassy will be pretty familiar with the paperwork that he or she will see presented to them? what i mean is, should they know that, for example, it's possible to accept a copy of the employment letter after being shown the original?

just trying to button things up. jamie is heading to london tomorrow evening after work. he will stay will friends and then go in the morning on monday to the embassy. can anyone give me a ballpark time he should arrive? his interview time is 10am. im wondering how early he can go, or if he'll be asked/told to wait outside until the appropriate time.

if you are using tax RETURNS, yes, it is best to have w2s to accompany them. as far as i know, these do not have to be originals so you could have your fiance scan and email them to you to have for the interview. or, depending on how much time you have before your interview, you can request tax TRANSCRIPTS from the irs. they take a few days to arrive, but there are simple to order and free. if you are submitting a tax transcript (as opposed to a tax return), w2s are not necessary. again, your fiance could scan them and them them to you.

I really don't think its in my interests to complain about something else. I sent a very matter of fact email to the embassy a couple of weeks ago and have since worried about whether that may have any influence over my visa application. All email and correspondance gets added to your file apparently. I know that I ought to complain but it did strike me that Bentinck Mansions and all who work in it feel thet are a law unto themselves, again, quite possibly because they know very well we have no choice but to go there and their income is therefore guaranteed.

i understand your concerns.

personally, i believe that if you dont stand up and voice your opinion in a situation like this, the situation may never change. and while it may not benefit you, it might benefit the larger (visa) community in the future. they might even name the waiting room after you! The Kirsten UK Waiting Room. i do understand though. the stakes are higher in this process where we all sort of walk on eggshells.

why just today i called my city department of public works and reported a pothole in the road that i have been negotiating on my bike for the past month or so. if i never reported it, it might never get dealt with. and i pay taxes to the city so its my right. : )

also, i recently contacted my vermont state legislators and the governor concerning the recently approved gay marriage bill. (contacted them BEFORE the votes.) how should i expect them to know my opinion and be able to make a decision about how to best represent their constituency if there is no communication? i got responses from all of the legislators (but not the governor) and i do feel that my voice was heard on this issue. and vermont became the fifth state to allow gay marriage. (woohoo!)

i think having information posted in several places in several formats is not the end of the world. different people do their research different ways. some of us are really efficient, great with computers, and detail orientated. others are not and may have a hard time finding information they are looking for easily.

if we could put a pinned London Embassy FAQ that refers people to both the wiki entries and best practices for searching threads (julez, even i learned from your mini-search tutorial!) it could be helpful. it could a. help people get the information they might be searching for, b. slightly reduce repetitive posting and c. educate searchers on more efficient searching.

</cold pricklies>

United KingdomPeople between NOA2 and Interview ~2009~
the things i have most appreciated during this process (other than input from other people here on vj) have been posts or topics which are fairly specific.

the VJ K-1 guide is enormously helpful, but i think that a UK specific explanation of some parts of the process might be helpful for some topics (getting your immunizations up-to-date, information relating to the affidavit of support, etc.) i know many of these topics are universal, but from what i have gathered, there is a lot of UK wisdom on the subjects that i found really helpful.

i learned about all of this information bit by bit by reading (for hours and hours) through the forums, uk and non-uk (which helped give me perspective), searching through threads using the search option (very helpful, like you said), and just generally trying to LEARN about the process. i searched first, asked questions second. (i also tried to have good messageboard etiquette in order to be polite.)

another poster up there, (ellie maybe?) mentioned a 'top tip' thread. i think thats not a bad idea! sort of a rolling set of recommendations. (fyi, my top tip is BUY A SCANNER/COPIER/PRINTER!)

so i vote for a tip thread and a google doc with a review of the important pieces of the process (ex. pre-medical protocol, I-134 documentation, filling the 'packet 3') yes, it might be repeatin information available elsewhere, but at least it would be all in one place.

i do agree though... with careful searching, some patience and a level-head most questions one might have can and already have been answered on vj.

something with a title that communicates well the content of the thread so that people are encouraged to search for answers there first, before posting them.

i keep thinking that there should be a 'pinned' thread that documents these sorts of tips and tricks. i know that the embassy info page as a lot of good info, but there are many subjects that come up again and again that could be addressed in a thread like this.

i think it would be a little hard to keep it manageable (and up-to-date) but i bet we could come up with something. or i was thinking that a google doc with info that could be updated easily might be a good option. we could provide a link to that in the pinned thread.

could have a hot list of perennial topics like notarization, umm.. and others.

sorry, just thinking out loud. im pretty fuzzy in the head with my illness, so feel free to pat me on the head and send me back to bed.

nik+heather (or anyone),

do you have any other good tips for finding cheap flights? i get overwhelmed quickly and im sure i miss out on some good deals.

i guess one of our issues is that jamie will be ultimately flying into BTV, aka burlington international airport in grand old burlington, vermont (it is grand. im not being sarcastic!) normally, what we do is fly into JFK and then connect on another airline. (i have a friend who works for jetblue so we get lots of buddy passes. about $20 for a one way flight to btv from jfk.) but im not sure that jamie will want to deal with the extra hassle of changing terminals and flying standby (thats the catch with the buddy passes) on top of having to pass through immigration. i bet if there is a really cheap flight from manchester to kennedy he might be convinced! i just want it to be as easy as possible for him, poor little guy.

we usually trawl through expedia first and see what is cheap. and then go to the airline sites directly.

and nik+heather, are you saying that looking at say 'business class' might be a good idea? with possibly more relaxed change conditions?

hmm. i look into it.

im still exactly 50-50! dammit!

im worried that the ticket prices are going to jump DRASTICALLY in the next month. (omg, i might be married exactly one month from today! ahhh!)

but, really, the money isnt the most important thing, and if it cost $2000 to get him here, (poor magpie), thats what we would do.

another exercise in patience. im horrible at being patient. EXCEPT, that i have been able to wait 5 years to be with jamie. almost done!!

good, honest answer. (i like your style.)

im not a gambler. at all really. the thing that is pushing me is that, in my head, i have gotten attached to a date to get married. i think may the fifth sounds nice. for various reasons, its the date i like.

jamie's interview is on the 20th. so, its entirely possible, but could easily be ruled out by a small hitch. i think jamie is more inclined to tempt fate than i am.

hmm. your answer does help. it makes me lean slightly towards pre-purchasing.

i felt that way too.

get going on things. its much better to check things off your list sooner rather than later so you can preempt having to wait for documents to arrive.

order police certificate
make medical appointment (if/when you have a LND case number from the NVC)
fill out DS forms
etc etc etc!

congrats!

edit: oh and order the tax transcripts because they simplify your life a little.

those are my hints. : D
