i find it amazing that tourists come to MENA and wear hot pants and tank tops! whatever happened to "when in rome, do as the romans do."? at least to SOME extent!

I remember one time in the american embassy i saw some tourists.. this woman was .....hmmm... well had her boobs all hanging out.. and her cottage cheese thighs squished out her shorts.. I'll i kept thinking was.. do Egyptians look at her and think she is a stereo typical American?

Middle East and North AfricaNon muslims in a Muslim Country..

I am carring this over from the Tuesday thread.. I'm just curious how people Do.. when they go to a Muslim country and start to cover.. I have seen people say this before... that when they visit their SO.. they cover in that country they cover as to not stick out...

are you seriously gonna have to wear abaya's / hijab out there??? your not even muslim. Is it really a requirement? (why does the spelling of that word not look right....)

Ive seen pictures with non covered woman in Saudi

I think unless you are living on a western compound, the abaya is really "necessary."

well.. I have gotten used to being fully covered and dealing with the heat.. and I do mean.. clothes.. abaya.. arm covers.. underscarf and hijab.. all 100 layers :P...

BUT i would think it would be SOOO hard to be a non muslim.. who Never covered.. to then move to saudi.. where in July its 120+ degrees.. where you then have to cover..

Maybe I'll make this a new thread... Since it's not Tuesday anymore :P

I have gone to Morocco twice, am Christian, and did not cover my head. Hamid is perfectly ok with this. The funny things was, his parents had a beautiful djalaba made for me. Hamid and I took pics, but he ran in and put on American style clothes and there I was in the Djalaba. He is fine with what I wear, other than really short skirts, which I am too old to wear anyway.

We blended in with the crowds in Marrakech where he works. I was sorta shocked at all the boobs and stomachs hanging out of the women's/tourists' clothes there--not much respect. But in Casa in March (I think I was the only white woman there) and in Youssoufia, I get all kinds of stares from the men. Who knows, cuz I'm white, old, or whatever--lol. I wear shorts that come to my knees, no sleeveless anyway (dont wanna expose those ham hocks).

When we were in Essouria (sorry about the spelling) for their reggae music festival, there were all types of folks there. However, the police seem to always be after us. At the airport, if he hugs me, there they are. Then at the music festival, we decided to leave the crowd and go sit at a cafe. I started walking away fast, and Hamid put his hand on my shoulder. The police were there in like 3 seconds asking what he was doing. Not used to that. I told him I guess people will always be looking at us--age, color, cultural differences. We'd better get used to it.

BUT I DO HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS--Hamid wants meat that is hamal or however you express that. There are several places in a nearby city to buy it. Do you have difficulty adjusting to some of those types of things?
Debbie (and Hamid)

halal meat.. where are you from.. try googling halal stores in your area

Middle East and North AfricaNon muslims in a Muslim Country..

If I were not muslim there is no way in heck I'd live in a country where they made me cover. I would just feel wronged if that makes sense. I guess if there were a good reason to be there, like my husband making over $200k/year or something, then I'd deal but I would demand to live in a US compound where covering wasn't necessary.

I forgot to add that I don't cover here either for personal reasons but I will cover in Egypt, but then I'm muslim so I look at it as a sacrafice and as adding points if that makes sense.

so how did you deal with the cairo heat and covering?

oh wait... you were there in Dec right? was it hot then?? or no
deemabroukFemaleEgypt2007-07-11 11:25:00
Middle East and North AfricaNon muslims in a Muslim Country..

I used to cover here full time (higab/abaya or gilbab). I did this for several years. I don't know exactly what happened but I started feeling very uncomfortable with covering. I've been "uncovered" for about 3 yrs now. I do cover when I'm in Egypt. I do it mostly out of respect for my family there. My SILs, MILs, and the rest of the females in the family cover. They wear conservative clothing and a higab (tarha). Only one of my SILs wears an abaya. She lives most of the time in UAE with her husband so I think she got used to wearing it there. I also cover to avoid the stares. I'm terribly uncomfortable when ppl stare at me.

I covered here during the summer so it wasn't such a shocker to be covered in Egypt during the summer (both here and in Egypt I wore lighter colors and materials during the summer). Now if I had never covered and all of a sudden had to go full higab/abaya (dark colors) in an extremely hot country like Saudia I'd never make it. I'd probably never leave the house.

yeah but you see.. you sorta knew how it was... cause you did cover for a while...

but the people that never really do.... Honestly I dont think I would leave the house either!!.. Over there I probably wont even have a choice..

(because of exploding emoticon - hahahha)

Me: No, babe. It's just an expression. It means he is in a bad mood. You know, like if something was in your azz, you would feel all grouchy. That's what it means. Got it?

Hus: Oh. Whatever. *gives me a weird look like - you better never do that to me*

Middle East and North AfricaWhat were your SO's first thoughts of the US?

my husband thinks boston is like a Big resort.. He keeps on comparing it to the Kings park in Montanza..

He always like.. Wheres the shops?? All the business??

and he STILL cant get over the friendly-ness.. He refuses to wave to someone he doesnt know..
Yesterday.. my grandmothers neighbors waved at us while they were leaving their house..

he was like "you know this man?" No... "then why he waved at us?"

CAUSE PEOPLE ARE FREAKING FRIENDLY HERE!!!!!

Funny you say that because my husband thinks that Bostonians are remarkably unfriendly. I love it because I hate going into a coffee shop or store etc. and being expected to make some sort of small talk. He wishes people here were more open.

really?? hmm...

Yeah, I thought Bostonians were even more notorious than New Yorkers for that. Anyway, that's great that he thinks the opposite. It'll make things much easier.

He has seen fat people, but not the morbidly obese 300 plus pounders here. He literally stopped walking
and was staring with his mouth open until I grabbed him. I don't recall seeing any 3-400 pound women, men, or children in Morocco when I visit either.

It really has a lot to do with our sedimentary lifestyle here. Now they are noticing rising obese Asians. Our country isn't
health conscience as it should be IMO.

he cant believe how nice people act.. We were driving out of the masjid and this man waved Hello at my husband.. but he just stared at him... I was like "Honey.. just wave and say Hi.."

" I dont know this man.. "

"Well.. he is Muslim. The muslims here are very friendly to eachother.. cause we are a small amount and we have to stick together"

"Oh.. okay.. " he was very happy that people were this friendly

And then today.. he said "the tempo in america is very fast" meaning we are very fast paced..

Middle East and North AfricaAP/AR GOOGLE SEARCH RESULTS

while we are at this point where we need an answer and because it does not matter where we ask , when we ask or who we ask .. we don't get one proper answer , so the other night i decided to ask google hoping i can find the lost answer .. i have used only the two letters (AP/AR) .. unfortunately i couldn't find the lost answer that i was looking for but i have found some interesting search results as i wanted to share it with you ...
AP ... Administrative Pain , administrative Punishment , Asministrative Paranormal , etc
AR ... Administrative Reversing , Administrative Rejection , Administrative Refusal , etc
at the begining i didn't pay attention but as a way of being curious i start thinking of what these words meant and here i realized the most interesting part
*if we look at any of these search results .. we will find that it could fitly descripe the realty of our situation specially this one ( Administrative Paranormal )
*the only people who think of (AP/AR) as ( Administrative Process / Administrative Review ) are people who haven't got their interview yet

yup that is more like it

It's not easy to deal with and honestly I don't trust her 100%. We certainly don't have the closest mother daughter relationship after everything that has been said and done (at least I'm not totally feeling it, dunno about her). It just makes things easier when it comes to holidays and family functions. I started talking to my parents again after much encouragement from Moh. Family is important to him.

How do you all deal with that shift in attitude from a parent? I'm glad I haven't experienced this, because I think that I would have a very hard time "accepting" a parent again, even if they had done a 180 like that.

haha.. you sound like me :P

MK is right, Doodle. As you know my mother (and father) were not big fans of me marrying Moh. Today she calls to see if Moh and I would come house sit for the weekend. She hugs and kisses him every time she sees him. A year and a half ago I couldn't imagine this happening. My mother is proof that even the most closed minded (and sometimes down right evil) ppl can have a change of heart. Plus, Egyptian men are charmers. Don't be surprised if she changes her tune.

Yup.. I'm with this one

So far my mom has used towel head, terrorist, one of them, that man, you little friend and etc... I will be abducted.. I will be beaten.. I am being used for a Visa and of course i have gotten the.. how can you do this to your kids... blablablabla

Inshallah it will all pass... And things will be alot different once he is here!

He may be talking about fast food or other restaurants not street food like koshari or fuul and falafel. For combo meals at McDee's for 3 ppl it costs about 60LE. If you're gonna eat McDee's or other fast food then count on more than 300LE for the time you'll be there. Our bill at a cafe in Giza was about 72LE for shawarma sandwiches, Pepsi, tea and sheesha. That was only one meal. He's not high balling it, he's actually low balling it IMO. Oh unless he's talking 300LE a day then that's way high balling it.

PHEW!!!!

OMG all night I was thinking ####### now another $380 might as well cancel the flat and just stay in Cairo!!! Now we can proceed as planned!!!

Also, he seems to think it will cost 300 pounds or so to eat out at restaurants everyday. Is that true or is he just a ding dong? Sounds like a lot of money though pounds aren't dollars so what do I know. He's talking nice restaurants though and I was like, ####### koshari costs less than a dollar and I can live on that!! lol

No he means between 200 and 300 LE per day to eat out, but he wasn't thinking McD's. He has some restaurants in mind for fish with the gross pukey heads staring right at you.

Ok so more stress...it will cost me approx $130 to park my car for the duration at an airport lot. This is ALL so that my parents, who basically live in the same town, don't come to my house, see my car, knock on the door, and freak when no one answers and call 911 thinking I'm dead.

Because of this I"ve decided to tell my mom that I"m going. I feel like I"m gonna hurl. :dead: :dead:

OMG!! 2 days before you leave??!! lol

Middle East and North AfricaKoshari Places in the US??
well I def. would like a spot that was a lil different than the regular Falafel shop... But could have that too
I think there are alot of Egyptians in the Boston area.... ISB seems to be crawling with them.. Egyptians...

I gotta check out some of the other spot...

I have been meaning to take Mohamed to the Sharwma King in Brookline.. I would think that Allston and the Comm Ave strip would be a good spot.. I figured Koshari could be marketed to the hipster vegetarian college kids... ? I was thinking a hooka bar... But it is viewed by some being Haraam.........

But anyways.... The wheels are turning....
