I am so glad to have found this thread and wish that I had found it months ago. I converted to Islam a little over a year ago and sometimes it has been very difficult, because I don't have a companion here to guide me, answer questions, show me the right way for things.

I read Amy's post about the woman she met and think it is the best advice she could give a person. I tried to learn everything at once.. wudu, salat, hadiths, wearing the hijab, learning what I could no longer eat, etc. It was all so overwhelming. Focusing on the most important things first, and worrying about small details like hijab later, helped for it to become a little less overwhelming. Though I must admit, even a year later I am HORRIBLE at trying to wear the hijab correctly :)

We do have a decent size Muslim population in my area, and I had tried to attend women's meetings at the mosque near my home, but they were always held during the weekday afternoons and it was not possible for me to miss work to be able to attend these. I tried a few times, but it was just too difficult with my work schedule and then they stopped holding these meetings, so it was no longer an option for me. My work schedule also keeps me from going to prayers at the mosque, so learning has been difficult for me.

I have had to learn much on my own..reading from the internet, reading from books, and I sometimes find that things I thought I had been doing correctly I was not. I taught myself Salat from watching videos on the internet. On my last visit to Turkey, my fiance's sisters showed me that I had been doing some things wrong.

We don't speak the same language, but they were wonderful in trying so hard to communicate to me what I was doing wrong and what I needed to do differently. I was upset that what I had thought I had been doing correctly all this time wasn't correct at all, but my Fiance was very quick to point out that what was in my heart was what was most important.. and if I what I had been doing was what I truly believed was correct then it did not matter and I should not worry about mistakes I had made with salat in the past.

We both look forward to the day we will be able to be together and he can help to answer my questions and help me to learn the things I still do not know. INSALLAH.

Once he is here, I will be able to change my work schedule and will hopefully able to meet some other women in my area that can help to guide me.

Amy, I hope you will see that woman again and be able to help her. I wish I had met someone like you when I first began this journey.

Welcome Jenn its always nice to hear from another sister to islam I too am a new convert of over a year. My husband is here and has done some teaching to me, but for the most part of it, I have been on my own, studying online, at the masjid, reading, and talking to other sisters. This is a good group of girls here, I've learned alot from all of them. If you have any questions or need an special answer to anythnig here is the place to ask! Incha allah you fiance will be here with you soon and help teach you more.

I somehow misplaced this thread in the shuffle... I have tried to contact that woman a couple times since I posted this, but she hasn't gotten back to me, and didn't show up at Jummah the last couple weeks. I am not sure what's going on with her, but I make dua for her.

Okay, something that has come up with all the baby-business going on in our part of the woods (we are having a girl, woo! Now I can put off dealing with circumcision! ) is the Egyptian naming thing. I am sure some of you are familiar with this, you have First-name father's-name grandfather's-name, and so on. My husband has five names, which is pretty common. He actually managed to have them put all of his names on his visa, somehow (but only two made it onto his SS card :P) Anyway, he has been insisting to me that this form of naming is Islamic, but I am really unsure about that. The closest thing I could find was this wikipedia article on Arabic names (if you scroll down to the "Arabic family naming convention" part, it explains it better), but it doesn't specify if it is cultural, religious, or what. I know there are a lot of non-Arab Muslim countries that don't practice this naming convention, and I have a hard time believing that all those people are misinformed.

For the record, I have no issue with this type of naming scheme, and I will throw as many of my husband's names onto our daughter's name as the US government will allow. :) I am just curious about the origin of it.

congrats on the babe amy!

More :)

I just found out about this spiffy lookin organization in Houston Texas. I think we have peeps from there? Wish we had stuff like this in my neck of the woods. Maybe I'll ad Houston to the list of potential places to move?

http://risala.org/

And, I got an ipod touch recently, and have been looking at islam related apps. Anyone have anything they'd like to recommend? Here's what I have and what I think of them thus far:

*alQuran - a free Qur’an program with a wide variety of translations and reciters. Only downside (for sunnis at least) is that the reference section is clearly shia is persuasion (subjects include muta, taqiyya, and the immate). But, I’m a big fan, because it has close to a dozen english translations you can download (with a wifi connection), including my recent favorite Ali Unal.
*iQuran Pro - had to pay for this one, but it’s worth it. The recitation is synced with the reading. It will scroll down as it’s playing, so if your arabic isn’t up to snuff (ehm, like mine), you can follow the arabic recitation. It also allows you to download (again with a wifi connection) various reciters, including an arabic/english recitation
*iPray Pro - another pay app. Pretty format, but I can’t yet figure out how to get the adhan to play at the prayer time if I don’t have push/wifi enabled all the time
*iSubha - not that I don’t already have 2 sets of dhikr beads in my purse at all times, now I can record my dhikr on my ipod. Lets you record and track how much you do.
*Divine Names - an app that helps you to memorize the 99 names of Allah (swt), set to one of my favorite nasheeds. You can play through the whole 99 names, listening and reading, or set it to go through a specific set, repeating the name 1 or several times. Spiffy spiffy spiffy.
*iDua - a mini dua book right on your ipod. Read the dua in english, arabic and transliteration. The downside here is that you have to download each recitation of the dua individually. It would be much better if you could download all the sound files in one fell swoop. Also, AbuS says there were some errors in the arabic. inshaAllah we’ll go through it and send them an email with things that they can fix.
*QDu’as - an app to memorize 41 quranic duas.
*QWords - a program to memorize 569 quranic words, that make up 80% of the Qur’an. inshaAllah it will help me to move towards my goal of being able to read (and understand) the Qur’an in arabic.

YOOOOO WHOOOOOOOO I'm loving it! thanks!!

A girl at (jehovah witness) was born into a muslim family, her father wasn't an arab but anyway she said I shouldn't celebrate birthdays cause I am Muslim. She really irritates me, cause what I have learned is nothing like she knows or says she knows.

Please give me some advice cause my 50th birthday is coming up and I want a party....

This has been a debate and always probably will. Those who are against it argue that innovative holidays are forbidden and that Allah SWT gave us 2 holidays and there is no evidence of the Prophet SAWS celebrated birthdays but there is a Hadith that says holidays other than what Allah SWT blessed us with is haram

Is there anywhere i can get this hadith so i can push it in her face, she just doesn't leave up on me, and she never was a practicing muslim and she is making my struggle harder.

My husband and I were talking tonight about the struggle I am having over wearing hijab all the time. And I came away from the conversation kind of hurt and put off. He also knows til recently I've been struggling with prayer, and its getting better. But he said instead of focusing on hijab, I should focus on learning Islam cause he feels I really don't know much and I should pray and read read read. I was like HUH? Islam is always something I am gonna be learning about. This new life style does not just come with a snap of the finger. I have a lot of issues telling my parents I converted, and feel that if I do wear hijab all the time, I won't be allowed to wear it around them. I don't know what to think anymore. I've had such a rough week and thought I was feeling better about this, now I feel lost again.

Hey sisters star_smile.gif

I really feel for those who would like to wear hijab but have fears about it. I had the same fears before I started wearing it but alhamdulillah that I was able to finally get past them and start wearing hijab. It took a year after saying shahada to start, and I felt so guilty that whole year for not wearing it, but I also realized that although I felt it was important, there were other things that were more important, like tawheed.

Sooooo, for all the sisters struggling with this issue, I will make dua for you. Insha'Allah you will find the strength and the way to wear hijab if it is your desire to do so. And though personally I think it's important, please remember we all go at our own pace and some women never do wear hijab. May Allah accept all of our deeds and recognize our intentions, ameen.

I am struggling with the same thing. I want to wear it, but feel like i will be singled out in our town or frowned upon. The town where we live there are a few muslims, but you rarely see someone in hijab. And when you do, they get the look! And I have a few friends, who when i have told them about my wanting to wear hijab have kind of mad faces or comments about it. sad.gif

Hey ladies,

So lately I've been thinking a lot about this book/devotional/study guide that I would love to find but haven't found. I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't exist. Now I'm not an expert on Islam and I'm sure that there are ladies out there who know a lot more than me but I am considering putting together a study guide. Something that would focus on topics or questions and then provide some scripture, hadith etc to reflect on and discuss. I can remember having multiple guides like this when I was doing Bible study but it just doesn't seem to exist for Islam. I have a few ideas i've tossed around - does this sound like something anyone else would look for? What types of issues/questions would you be interested in exploring more? I'm trying to decide if it is something valuable/do-able and if anyone would be interested. I may just end up doing it for myself but just thought I'd put it out there.

Something like this would help me. Here in my community there isn't a strong Masjid that takes interest and I kind of feel alone in my Islamic Studies.

I feel the same way you do Tasha. I've not prayed the way i should, i've fallen off to the side and need to reconnect myself. And I agree about a devotional something or another Amanda. That would be a big help to all us converts.

The title of this thread states it is for general chat for muslims or anyone interested in participating. The theme clearly states that this thread is for Muslim interests and that is the perspective of those who chose to participate. No where do I see that this thread invites challenges or discussion about the validity of Islam vs any other religion, nor do I get the impression from the majority of the thread participants that this is a direction they wish to pursue.

As a moderator I am suggesting that those who are interested in discussing the merits of one religious belief vs another - or none - start a separate thread to pursue that issue and leave the arguments off of this thread. I appreciate that the participants have been very patient during the preceding discussions, but believe they are right - this is not the thread for this type of discussion. Please do not continue it here. Start a new thread for that purpose if you wish to continue.

I disagree with you. I think that what you are suggesting is unfair censorship, as the points made related to the discussion.

I haven't said much up to this point. But I have to agree with the mod on this. There has been another thread started where u can discuss what u want there. please don't try starting anymore trouble here, we don't want to see this thread being closed.

I'm sure everyone can find the evidence for hijab/khimar if they so chose, so I won't go into that here.

I do need to address this however:

QUOTE
As a "Non-hijabi" I show them that Islam is not about clothing or being forced to do something. It is above all worshiping and believing in the ONE GOD. It is also about freedom and choice and Islam is not just for Arabs. It's for everyone and anyone.

Islam is literally submission to God. We submit our nafs to Him. And that does mean we are obligated to do certain things. Once we freely choose to submit to Allah (swt) and make shahada, things become incumant upon us. We don't have freedom or choice when it comes to whether or not to make salat. We don't have freedom or choice when it comes to paying zakat. We don't have freedom or choice when it comes to making hajj. We don't have freedom or choice when it comes to following and loving the messenger of Allah (swt). We don't have freedom or choice as to whether or not we follow specific injunctions given in the Qur'an. And if something is clear in the hadith, we don't have a choice as to whether or not we follow that (at least if we're within the confines of alh al sunnah wa jamaah).

And yes, islam is for everyone, but just because someone choses to wear khimar does not mean they're trying to become an arab.

Dr. Umar Faruq Abdullah wrote an interesting paper on Islam and the Cultural Imperative, which discusses the role and incorporation of different cultures as islam expanded.

Actually, Islam isn't for everyone. It isn't a universal truth, nor is it an actual truth. It is only true, if you believe it - like any faith.

That struck me just now. That is exactly how I used to feel before I put the scarf on. I was an "undercover muslim". One day my husband asked me, "are you embarassed by your religion?". It was a simple question but it is one that stuck in my head and really really made me dig deep to get the answer as to why I really wasn't wearing the scarf.

Also I just want to add that I didn't just put it on the minute I became muslim. I think it was about a year after. I would not put it on until I knew in my heart that it was the right thing to do.

I'm just hot as heck in the thing is all.

I'm debating the issue myself if i want to cover all the time with hijab or not. I wear it for prayer and at the mosque but generally not any other time. some people just wouldn't understand. My parents for one, they don't know i've converted.

To hide the hideousness of your nails as they grow while the henna stain is still there.

Of course you could probably put more stain on there but then would you want the same color on there constantly? And what if your nails appear two toned when you put more stain on it? Honestly, I wouldn't do it.

I didn't think it smelled that bad. Why do you need to wear gloves if your nails are colored?

I'm just doin it for my toes. I don't want to do it for my nails on my hands! Tina i will let you know!
