CanadaMontreal Interviews

Finally got an interview for July 12th.

I guess I'll see some of you there !

I called Dr. Seidens on Friday and was able to get in for my medical this coming Monday. Great news as I'm leaving Toronto this coming Friday for good. The one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to set up DHL. Do I do that now or at the interview ? I'll read up on it later in the day but if anyone has figured this out, let me know.

Good luck to all !

You got luckier than my fiance, he also called Friday and tried to get an appt for next week as he's coming here to visit until his interview and leaves next Sat. We're hoping someone cancels an appt. You set up DHL here (https://usvisa-info....A/selfservice/p) by registering for courier service.

CanadaTravelling With Cats

off topic a bit----but a lot of airlines will NOT take an animal that has been sedated. I know we could not when we flew our dog to Nicaragua!!

I didn't have any issues and the cat flew with Delta back in 2008. However it was in-cabin in a soft carrier with my mom at her seat not in the cargo which may be different. As far as I know they didn't ask my mom about it. I didn't like the idea of using sedatives but I didn't want him freaking out on my mom either which is why we only used the minimum possible (think we cut one pill in half and that's all we gave him, we were given 2 pills in case he needed a second dose which wasn't required). While Pete was a stray so I can't say his age for sure I'm certain he was relatively young (1-2 yrs is my guess) so I didn't have the concerns that come with an older pet. Breeds with short muzzles (such as Persians) need special consideration as well and I would avoid sedation if at all possible in those kinds of circumstances. I wouldn't sedate a cat for a car trip.

Oh another tip, if it's hot use the AC don't roll down the windows. All that breeziness in the back seat pisses them off. My cats also liked having some music.

CanadaTravelling With Cats
I made the 3.5 day trip from WI to WA when I relocated to work, and then 2.5 yrs later the same trip in reverse. The first time I had 3 cats, the second I had my mom fly home with 1 ahead of me so I only had 2. If you have a visit to the US before POE and one cat doesn't travel well might be worth it to pay extra to bring them here ahead of you on the flight. For the cat that flew we got a sedative from the vet, cut the dose in half and it worked just fine though the TSA searched his kitty diaper and he almost got loose in the Seattle airport.

For the car trip I had each cat alone in a mid-sized carrier with a towel or blanket in the bottom. All carriers were buckled into the backseat. I had a cardboard box lined with a garbage bag and then one of those tiny little plastic litterboxes in the bottom of it and had that on the floor wedged between the back of the driver's seat and the bottom of the backseats. I didn't feed or water the cats during the driving time, and saved that for each night when I let them run loose in the hotel (I feed my cats once at night and leave it out all day so this was fairly normal for them). Everytime I stopped for food, water, or gas I let each cat out for a few minutes, one at a time, to give them the chance to use the litterbox. They were very good about getting out of the carrier, doing their business, and hopping right back in. I also pulled over if it sounded like one of them needed to use it. One of my cats loves to travel but the others don't. Still overall they settled in pretty well and it was quite decent for such a long trip with so many cats.

CanadaAny VJers from South Western Ontario?
My fiance Jay lives near Toronto and will be moving to WI. Though I will be headed there first to stay with him for the interview and to help him pack up for moving once we get the visa, assuming we can find a decent place to stay short term that doesn't cost a fortune.

CanadaFormat of pictures for evidence of meeting, and for ongoing relationship
I actually bought a photobook and blank 4x6 index cards, printed the photos out, and put each photo in with a caption on the 4x6 index card indicating the date, circumstances, location, etc for the photo. So you open the photo book and there's a photo in the top slot and a caption on the bottom of each page. No clue if they'll actually keep it that way but it's how I sent it.

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 March 2013 Filers

I had my N400 interview today.

Appointment was at 8:30am. Got there by 8:00, went through security, waited for about an hour (9:00) then a gentleman called my name.  He asked for my DL, GC, Passport then proceeded with 6 civic questions (easiest ones) then the English test. I had to read ?Which state has the most people?? and write ?California has the most people?. Went through the questions on N400 and double checked my name and address etc.  Then gave me a paper that says 'Congratulation!, your application has been recommended for approval.' Told me wait about a month for the Oath letter and another month for the ceremony. That?s it. Whole interview took less than 10 minutes and didn't ask for any supporting documents.

Some background info: I?m applying N400 under 5yr-condition and my USCIS office is Milwaukee, WI.

My journey is almost over! smile.png

I studied the 100 Civics question and I did not see the question of "Which state has the most people? "

Hello guys I've been approved thank goodness. My appointment was 9:15 we left home around 8:20 sice were not too far away from the office but it interesting we ended up being late more than 10 mins and I'm freakin out we got to the building my husband dropped me off and follow when he find a parking slot. I explain to the security that I was late and he told me don't worry about it just tell them your in security. Too nervous I went up and down up an down in the elevator lol. I got in the interview place and again tell the security I was late and said told worry about it, there were 3 people including me. About 5 minutes later the officer(he) called my name. He ask me to sit down then stand up oath to tell the truth and sit down he gave me the pics I sent together with n400 and told me to sign it and asked for green card and dl. he was very friendly and pleasant. He go thru the whole n400 question word for word and let me sign the last page. Then he asked me 6 question. This is random I didn't remember the exact order. 1.What is freedom of religion? 2. When does the constitution written? 3. What states border Canada? 4. Selective service? 5. What ocean in east coast? 6. How many senators? The reading and writing Is all about taxes. Then he asked me if I bring some documents.i told him yes and he said he need the one will utility bills or letter with both me and my husband name on it I even show him family picture and he took it and that's it he said congratulations you pass and I recommend you for approval and wait for the oath letter to be sent. My husban told me it didn't take more than 10 mins. I feel happy and much better now were all getting there. Good luck guys!

Congrats! We have the same set of Civics questions :) ....

QUOTE (RalphandHanh @ Aug 7 2009, 12:44 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
thanks for all the great info guys. I'm going to try some of them. I just read about a mix of vinegar water and a dash of soap. I'm also concerned about two dogs we have here getting into some toxic stuff.

We are going to Cambodia Next weekend from the 14th to the 16th but here is the address for those who want to stop by:

17 M Vu Huy Tan Street
Ward 3
Binh Thanh District

Hope to see you guys here... I will be here all year smile.gif

Ok I will plan on Seeing you there, Ill Will give Phi the address. she will know where it is. maybe the 3 of us can talk. Phi's Home town, Vinh Long, Doesn't have many people that speak English. So i would be nice to meet up and have a chat, maybe drink a few Bias (beers) and have a little get together. It's nice to be around people in the same boat as us, people that we can relate to. maybe after our interview on the 12th. With phi not passing her medical i am not sure what will happen. but we can only hope for the best. After stressing all day it will be nice to talk to someone that knows English and knows what were going through.

also, Jim. if you feel like coming down to Vinh Long (3 hour taxi south if HCM) It would also be great to visit with you. It is a nice city. small(ish) but fun. there is this great pho place. I know VN has great Pho everywhere. but i promise you, this place in Vinh Long has the Best Pho i have ever had. I will be in Vietnam from the 10th through the 24th, (I leave early in the morning on the 24th.) as far as I know we will be in HCM then Vinh long and Can Tho. Can Tho is a great City, It is cleaner than Vinh Long, (more tourist) but also the river walk is nice.

Anyways If either of you want to meet up, Let me know. I would love to plan something. As far as I know we have no plans after the interview on the 12th.

I had that problem in my first place. Sometimes there would be a bunch of them, then none. If you dropped one crumb of food on the floor they would appear in less than 15 minutes. How to get rid of them? Try to disrupt their path, since they follow smell. You can smudge your finger over a small area and they will get confused. I found several leading into my house and cleaned real good. It worked for a while.

What district is your shop in anyway?

I'm looking for the path but I don't see it. I think they took some lessons from David Copperfield cause they be magic ants. We're talking like 2 minutes and I see them running to a drop of fruit juice or crumb.

We are in the Binh Thanh District. Selling ice cream and smoothies but are gearing up for full cafe in two weeks.

Oh... and gotta love the low flying invisible mosquitoes too

Augest 10th through the 12th I will be in HCM, Ill Have to stop by and get some Ice Cream! Phi Loves strawberries, so if you can make a Strawberry smoothie, she will take one of those! Im so excited to see her! oh boy, im not really worried about the interview. I mean I am but... with the TB and all, she cant come anytime soon. im just so happy to be going back, I really do miss it (and her obviously) ! ok im blabbering, Anyways, See you in HCM, if you want I can try to bring some ant killer, but I dont know if they will let me bring it!

I've never brought Zippos, but they do sell them on every corner here. I doubt the quality is high though. I saw some the other day that had GI's names on them and appeared to be very old. I'm really wondering if they are authentic, or pirated.

The green oil, or Eagle Oil, in the states is of a different formula. That's why many people will ask you to bring it. If you want to get on somebodies good side give them a bottle. Any Asian store in your area will have it. It should be about $5 a bottle.

yeah Zippos was one thing Phi said would be a good gift. Its been almost a year since my last visit. also Crayons and coloring books, now is a great time to buy crayons, i picked up 12 boxes at 18 cents each, I work retail so i get a extra discount at my store. but its back to school so everything is on sale. Vinh Long is a small town and that's where her family is from. they dont make it out to Saigon much. I am also from a small town so its nice i can relate to them in that way. also shampoo and things like that are nice because here we have like 1000 kinds and smells of shampoo. And in Vietnam they dont have the hugh selection of stuff as we do. pretty much anything that is foreign they like, same as us really. dont tell me that no1 brought back somethings from Vietnam, i myself have orders from my friends for hats! Another thing i am going to see if they like are sunflower seeds. Ranch, BBQ, Dill, Jalapeno and other flavors. I know Jalapeno will be a hit.

I am happy I made this post because it is nice to see what others are bringing. I will try to bring in my checked, if they take them well... Ill be out 180usd but If they are in HCM ill try to buy some.

Also for anyone getting a hotel in VN, have your fiancee get the room and you stay out of sight, it seemed when ever they saw me, the price changed.(doubled) just another tip for others.

Zippo's? Wow thats a new one to me.. I see guys selling them everywhere in VN... I dont think it will be a problem at all in a checked bag...

For additional ideas stop by the bank and get some 2 dollar bills and make someones day... and always drop into victorias secret if you have time, to pick up lotions and body sprays... everyone loves lindt chocolate bars.. I end up with a list of things to bring each time I go and the list always includes medicines like imodium and tylenol.

Yeah last time I was there was in November and we brought tons of Halloween candy. I also brought gum (all kinds of flavors of trident), they love them. and it came in handy when at the market. they kids begging loved them too. now on this trip back Phi's Aunt is sending alot of gum. it was a big hit, im also bringing salonpas (like icyhot patches) and medicated oil. (eagle something) and some Imodium for my self tongue.gif also bringing ensure for phi's grandfather, he swears it keeps him alive and well. and I would have to agree. Its a good idea to bring a few cases if there is a older family member in the family. it has great vitamins and nutrients.

and your right, i did read that wrong,

Common Lighters - Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked baggage. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked baggage, unless they adhere to the Department of Transportation (DOT) exemption, which allows up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case. If you are uncertain as to whether your lighter is prohibited, please leave it at home.

Im going to Vietnam on the 9th. I have some Zippos I bought for gifts.(I have 8) I was wondering will this be a problem? they are all empty (never had fuel in them) I was reading TSA rules and it said ok for carry on but not checked. I was wondering if anyone had brought them to Vietnam before and if anyone had any problems.

Thanks.

I was worried about not having paper stating relitavies in the USA because that is how i met phi through a friend of my mother. Here are some questions they asked her.

who interoduce us to each other?

When you 1st know your fiancee?

What launguage do you talk with your fiancee?

Where did your fiancee learn Vietnamese?

When was the 1st time your meet your fiancee? (Face to face)

When did your fiancee proposed to you?

Did you and your fiancee have dinh hon (engagment ceremoney)

how many people come to dinh hon?

when did you have dinh hon?

How many days was your fiancee in vietnam the 1st time?

has your fiancee gone to vietnam after the 1st time?

What are your fiancee's hobbies

Where does he go fishing?

Who does he go with?

What is his name?

Where he meet this person?(friend from high school)

(they looked at pictures she brought, they saw some of my brother in iraq and many many other photos)

they asked if she can interview english

Does your fiancee have any brothers or sisters?

they asked where fiancee brother live

Does your fiancee parents work?

talk about your fiancee home town

that was about it. Thank you VJ members for helping us get thtis far. and sorry it took so long. I was just so happy to leave saigon... god i hate it.... i am in Vinh Long..... And I missed it tongue.gif

Congrats

This worrys me because my wife can easily answer those questions however she cannot awnser them in Vietnamise and her English is very hard to understand unless you know her language imperfections and you know what to listen for. She can awnser them in Cantonise fluently but is wants to awnser them in English. She is afraid to ask for a Cantonise translator because she thinks the interview will be harder or they will want me to speak Cantonese.

try to go over the questions with her. you have to do the work but it really pays off in the end.

off topic.... but aww man am i feeling it today. L

Josephs, why the obsession with SMS? It seems silly to get dinged every time you send a few words back and forth. Why not use email or instant messenger?

well I like to talk to her when i am on my break at lunch at work. or before I sleep. with the time difference sometimes i am not home or she is not home when i want to talk to her. Her speaking English is ok, not good. but her reading and writing English is very very good. half the time I have to send her a SMS while we are on the phone because she doesn't understand something i am trying to say. When we are together we have little problems talking. if she doesn't understand what i am saying and we are together, I just get out my phone and type it and show it to her. or if its only 1 word that she doesn't understand. I write it on my hand with my finger. So that is why we use SMS so much. and if i or she try to spell the word on the phone, that sometimes is worse. d sounds like b or she forgets how to say a letter or some of her letters sound the same. we are working on the whole B as in BALL D as in Dog system. maybe after we get that sorted out there will be less need for SMS.

communication will be the hardest thing in our relationship. but we are ready to deal with it. I think and her family agrees, that after she has lived here for about a year she will be able to talk English and understand very well.

So that is why we use SMS so much.

If your she lives in HCMC I can recomend a great english tutor. My fiancee Binh is a school teacher and she tutors people all the time. Her english is great. I think her english is better than mine at times! Jerome

She lives in Vinh Long. Atm she is going to chruch to learn more english.

hey, welcome back. It's great to hear about your wife's interview.
As of the phone card, I use to use lots of them but they dont keep the record of who you're calling. Well, you said that you dont need it anymore so I guess I can suggest you to use "Mambo" That's the phone card that i use. Lots of minutes for such a good quality card. You don't loose minutes if you stop talking like some of the other cards.
I don't know much about text messaging because we don't use them at all.
Great to hear you're back safely. How is the situation over there with the H1N1 stuff? I'm coming back there in three days.

no worry N1H1, If you feel worried, then wear a mask when you fly, I saw people wearing them on the plane, but most were children and elderly people. also when on the plane, wash your hands often with soap, bring small bottle of hand sanitizer. (less than 3oz remember for carry on!!!!)

I got really lucky on my flight home. from Hong Kong to Chicago my ticket didnt have a seat number on it. they over sold economy and economy Plus.... (united Airlines) so I got to Fly 14 hours in business class at the cost of Economy!!!!!! it was like sitting in my living room. and Im 6' 1" so the leg room was great!

but I have to say, my 1st time I flew Korea Air, and this time was United. I would fly a non USA airliner if you can. the flight attendants on Korea Air were so nice and polite. but United were rushed and not polite. (but the ones in business class were very polite on united)

just my 2 cents

Good Luck on your Trip!!!!! and watch out for dunk honda's!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, so i am back in USA va nho phi rat nhieu (and miss Phi very much) now that the interview part is over and now we are just waiting for her TB test results, and maybe waiting treatment for TB. I was wondering about calling cards. We dont need evidence anymore. my cellphone bill this month was soooooo high. it almost made me sick(400+USD). we talked alot and we sent MANY MANY SMS to eachother.

Anyone know of a good calling card, and maybe a program other than Skype for SMS? I sometimes use yahoo to send her SMS. that is free for me and costs her less. but she needs to be signed on yahoo on her yahoo account for her phone for her to get my SMS.

My Phone contract is up, so I can also look for a new company if it has better SMS rates. I am with Verizon Wireless.

SMS send =$.25 USD
SMS Rcv'd =$.20 USD
International Long Distance - Mobil = $0.56 / min

TXT Messaging-Int'l Sent messages -- 301 301 75.25
TXT Messaging-Int'l Rcv'd messages -- 235 235 47.00

International Long Distance - Mobil 165.76

At 1st my Fiancee wanted to live in Chicago, lots of VN there and her uncle lives there. But I said hell no! I would never live in a big city. I enjoy visiting but I would never want to raise children there. too many things to worry about. I like were I live now. In 2004 i think or 2003 not sure my city was the safest metropolitan in the country. now i think we are ranked like 5th or something. but still that's not bad. hell I don't even lock my car half the time. that's just how it is here. Her city is small and well her family now is like that of my grandfathers family when he was my age. big and many of them were farmers. now many of the farms are gone. summers here will be great though. much time is spent outside with family. but the only thing is winter. not all that much to do, at least outside. sure there is ice fishing. but i can imagen her now, covered in clothes, hat, jacket, snow pants, boots and looking like a little ball walking on the ice... haha it will be fun.

I gotta say I do enjoy talking about this stuff, even if no1 reads, its healthy!

to add (it wouldnt let me edit sad.gif)

Phi is from Vinh Long. her parents are farmers. she is more of a "country" girl and I like that. also she has many family in VN. she has a family from both her mother and fathers side here in the USA, but she talks mostly with her family on her mother side. she has 2 uncles and 1 aunt from her mothers side that live in USA. (Cau tu also Mo tu, Cau moui and Di bay) her aunt lives in my city with the people that introduced us to each other. her 2 uncles live in Chicago. one of her uncles has a Wife that came to USA but left because she missed VN. she now lives in VN and he goes their for 3 months a year to be with his wife. she does have family close so that is a great thing, but most of her family is in VN. I will agree with you Jim, that VN families in USA are close to VN families in VN. but it is the daily life that changes how they work. (VN compared to VN in USA) At least in my situation and what I observe.

Jim, I didn't mean to say that you aren't prepared or ready. all I was saying is that VN life is much different. so even if there is everything available to make it more like VN and make the adjustment easier, it will still be tough. best advice I can give you is make sure you stock up on calling cards. (although I am sure you will be well prepared.)

I my self Live in Wisconsin. In the city i live, we have little VN food (but many Chinese and Hmong food). we have a few Asian grocery stores, but they are owned by Hmong people. The Adjustment for Phi is going to be very tough. Winter for about 5 months will be the hardest thing for us to deal with. Phi has never seen snow or felt cold weather. cold to her is in the lower 70's. Here It can get below 0. It's a big difference. I my self am doing my best to help her get adjusted when she comes her. she is 28 and I am 23. Much younger I think, than the average person but I met my match. But I think our young age will help to a point. I am a very flexible person and I do love VN food as well as all kinds of other foods. Phi and I are now waiting on Test results for TB. She had her interview but she did not pass her medical. once she passes her medical then she will get her visa. that is why we got Blue.

I guess my post was directed to everyone. To help any fear or unease people had or worries with these fraud cases. (but don't be blind, if something doesn't feel right or if your relationship is not close like a "normal" relationship then take a step back and look at your situation) Know the person you are marrying.(or married to(oh god please, I hope you already know them and they know you!)) don't be afraid to ask any questions or concerns you have, and also listen to your fiancee (wife). Know your fiancee's (wife's) fears and what they expect when they get here. Show and tell them as much as you can about your city and how you live in it. How your family is setup and how it works. everyone's family is different, everyone's life is different. Your fiancee(or wife) may have heard things from family members or gotten an idea how of USA life is from family or friends in the USA. Make sure you tell them how things are here in your own situation.

I hope no one takes offense to my post. I am just here offering my opinion and I hope my help.
