Canadatrying to reach Montreal

Hi guys,

I moved recently and trying to update my address( our case already left NVC and they told my fiancé to call Montreal). I've been calling for two days now and nobody ever picked up the phone.

This is the number I have 514 398 9695

Do you know any other numbers that I should call or should I email them? I understand that emailing them is not the fastest way and Im afraid they might send the packet 3 soon

Thank you !

Have a good day!

They take ~20 days to reply to emails (faster than their advertised 28 days).

Do not, I repeat, do not wait for MTL to send you packet 3. We never received it. Never.

You can download everything you need from the consulate website and all you need in order to send it in to MTL is confirmation that they have logged your I-129F physically and sent packet 3.

Do the rest on your own and send it in without waiting on them. No need to wait, and besides you may wait forever.

CanadaMontreal Packet 3 - September 2013 - Still Waiting

You must be one of the lucky ones who got their Packet in the MTL mail room when they pick up the parcels once bi-weekly (it seems!).

I sent my Packet 3 on the 16th, confirmed delivery on the 17th.... no Packet 4 e-mail yet :/

Thanks for the head's up - I'm going to e-mail MTL directly today.

About 8 days for us to get P4 email. Your emails to MTL will take at least 20 days for them to respond to.

CanadaDriving across the border

Good Morning,

now that I have my NOA2 I am working on planning my move.  I will be driving down in order to move everything as inexpensively as possible.  I am wondering if nyone knows if the Coutts Alberta crossing processes K1's or if I have to go through Cardston.

Any advice would be greately Appreciated.

Sweetgrass should be able to handle it, you can call them at (406) 335-9610 to confirm.

CanadaOntario to the USA - Cheapest moving suggestions

Yeah, I was looking at U-Haul. $105 to rent for 3 days, and at $0.69/km that equals to about $966 and then gas is whatever. London, ON to Atlanta, GA is average 1400km and a two day drive, so we'd have hotel cost too.

Good point.

I'm also considering renting a SUV and hooking up a trailer too it, even cheaper! lol

I do Wilmington, NC to Hamilton, ON in ~15 hours including the border (if I were closer to I-95 I'd offer a place to crash on to save on hotel costs).

If your USC fiance is coming to get you, have them pick up the U-Haul in Buffalo; seemed to be ~$200 cheaper than starting from Canada. The drop fees for most rental cars makes it less fun to take an SUV, minivan, or 15 passenger van (max out your space) from what I could find.

We live in Toronto and are moving to North Carolina and have looked into both U-Pack and one of those U-Haul U-box things. We have a one bedroom condo, with an average amount of stuff, so we're thinking it can fit into one cube. Our U-Pack quote was under $1,000 and the U-Haul was around $1,400. I wonder why yours was so much more expensive! Like someone else said though, maybe you can head across the border to rent a truck in order to get a better price.

Check out Buffalo options for U-Haul, it was cheaper than when I looked in Canada.

CanadaApproved at Montreal!

TL;DR: stayed at Le Square Phillips, arrived at 0630, upstairs at 0800, got C1, technical glitches ensued, interview at ~0845, approved and outside by 0900. Easy as following the guides!

From our review of the consulate:

We followed all of the guides and stayed around the corner from the consulate at Le Square Phillips. Very nice rooms and was <5 minute walk to the consulate the morning of our interview. We arrived at 0630 and were the first, maybe 5 minutes later two other folks joined us. We were standing on the left, and for a brief bit the line split in two, but eventually they all came back to our side smile.gif

Like clockwork they turned the lights on at 0730 and we were the first into security, verifying our Loomis information / passport getting a sticker, and we went through the checkpoint. The maps are pretty accurate, we went down stairs to our left, then found our way to the chairs by the elevator. Only 6 folks at this time! Once inside the elevator, at 0800 on the nose, we moved to the back left and faced the opposing set of doors. Only one other person realized which way to face.

You can follow the tiny yellow arrows on the floor around to the left to the sign which says to wait for 14A/14B for your number. We waited about 5 minutes with nobody at the window when C1 was called overhead...so another gentleman went and told them nobody was handing out tickets! At ~08:10 we got the coveted C1 ticket and went to Window 1.....only to find that computer wouldn't complete a K1 case. This is what happens to a software engineer.

The lady asked us to then meet her at Window 6, where she completed the computer steps, finished with our paperwork and took Allanah's fingerprints. Then at about 08:40 we finished this bit up and waited on our interview. The interview took about 5 minutes in total, mostly small talk after Allanah read the oath, and then we received the Welcome to the United States letter!

When we walked outside, the church bells were ringing 0900

CanadaMontreal Consulate Packet 3/K1

Thanks! I will give them a call.  Also, it looks like some of you used xpresspost rather than the free loomis services.  My fiancee is in PEI, 2-3 hours from nearest loomis location so I think we are going to just send it xpresspost as well.  Did you guys just send it  US Consulate General Attn IV Unit to the "place d'youville" address?

Thanks again!

CanadaMontreal Consulate Packet 3/K1

Thanks for all of the information!

I still have not heard back from the email I sent through the online form but it does not sound like I will be hearing back anytime soon.

I think we are going to take the advice and just send out the packet 3 found on the website with the courier services.  The only question I have is that I am not 100% sure they actually sent packet 3/are expecting it.  All the CEAC tracker says is that Montreal is ready to schedule the interview.  Can I take that to mean they think they have already sent out packet 3/are expecting to receive it back?  I noticed that some of you knew the exact date Montreal "logged" receipt of the completed packet 3.  Does CEAC update to show that or is there somewhere else you guys are checking on that?  I tried calling NVC to get information but all they would tell me is that Montreal had probably received the approved I-129f.

Thanks for all the help! Its great to hear we are not the only ones going through this!

Call the Department of State visa line (they are way nicer, 202-485-7600) and ask if your case has physically arrived at MTL and if Packet 3 has been logged.

CanadaMontreal Consulate Packet 3/K1

Thanks for the response!

Unfortunately she has not yet received packet 3 so we haven't been able to respond to it yet.  Just curious Jsillat, did you have to wait long after getting the initial notice from NVC before you received packet 3?  I saw some posts where applicants had never received packet 3 and just went ahead without it and sent all the documents listed on the Montreal website.  I'm considering doing that but I don't want to cause any confusion and delay things further.

Do not wait on MTL for anything...ever...you'll only be waiting forever. We have not received Packet 3 from MTL.

Just download Packet 3 from MTL's website and fill it out. We filled ours out, mailed it in XPressPost, still waited ~8 days for them to log it, and are interviewing October 7.

Allanah and ChrisFemaleCanada2013-09-23 09:11:00
CanadaContacting the NVC

My petition was sent to them on the 26th of September.  I called today and they haven't received it yet and they stated that it could take up to 8 weeks.  Should I allow 8 weeks or would you recommend calling more often? How often does it happen that it takes too long to receive?

It takes more time than you think, but I'd call at least once a week for the next 3 weeks, and from then on out you can try once a day. It took us eight days to get to the NVC and get a case number, plus another two days for MTL to receive it (and three more for MTL to send packet 3, which we've still not received).

I'd also suggest using the Department of State number to get an IV case number, they're much nicer and I found them to be easier to work with to determine when Montreal received my K-1 case from the NVC. The NVC folks told us we didn't have a case but I called DoS at T+10 days and found out that in fact they had received the case!

Allanah and ChrisFemaleCanada2013-10-09 15:20:00
Canada2 weeks since Visa approved, still no visa! Anyone else a similar experience?

That's initially what I was afraid of, but this was posted on the Montreal Consulate website

THE EMBASSY AND CONSULATES ARE OPEN
  • The U.S. Embassy and Consulates General in Canada are open, and Consular and American Citizen Services are operating normally. For additional information please consult our websitecanada.usembassy.gov or travel.state.gov. For border information please check the Customs and Border Protection website atcbp.gov.

And some VJers with interviews Oct 1 already received their visa and passport.

We were Oct 7 and have received ours, the visa printing has not been affected as far as we can tell.

I can imagine any number of reasons that would slow the printing of the visa, but I doubt it is due to your degree or parents' nationalities. This whole process is a game of "hurry up and wait," which is likely your only recourse :-/

CanadaMontreal Interview -- Petitioner?

Hi guys, its been a long process, but we finally got an interview date in late October at the Montreal Consulate. Question -- I have been back and forth about going with my wife (beneficiary) -- for those who have went so far, is there any added benefit for going with my wife? I dont mind going, but its difficult to get the time off in the middle of the week.

Also, they put a time on our interview letter for 9:30 AM... Almost every review i read on here, folks ignored that and just went very early. is that recommended? Lastly, for those who got interviewed, did they ask for any additional documentation other than what was listed on the Packet 4 that we should be aware of to bring?

thanks for your help guys!

I went with Allanah and it was more for her nerves than anything during the interview. The whole process was basically small talk, provided your paperwork is in order.

Show up at 06:30 and you'll be the first in line (line up to the left of the door), you'll be the first in the door and thru security, and you'll be the first to get C1 once you go through the elevator (face the back). You'll be out of there before 09:30; most likely before 09:00.  :-)

You should bring:

1. Your photocopy of the entire I-130 packet and anything you sent to the NVC, just in case

2. All items from the checklist, including photocopies

3. Appointment Letter WITH Loomis information <- absolute, absolute must.

4. Nothing but your paperwork and passport, otherwise you'll be turned away to put it somewhere (not even car keys with keyfobs)

Canadatime to interview & time to enter US?

Hi,

My wife petitioned for me and we received our NOA2 recently. It took about 8 months for our NOA2 to come in! That really threw our plans in disarray. My wife (petitioner) is in her last year of medical school over-seas and her final exams are set to begin in late December & end in February 2014. After which we planned to a get away vacation and come to the US together.

1. Im wondering, if anyone knows if we can choose a date of interview to our liking at Montreal? And how late can we generally push it for?

2. If I go to the interview and everything goes well and they give me a visa, how much time will I have to pack up and move to the US? I think my wife has to be present in the US at the time I show up at POE with the cr1 visa, right?

I am just wondering if they will give me a duration of 3-4 months to wind everything up here in Canada before I can move to the US. I had to start a contract job which Im obligated to complete around the same time my wife finishes her college & moves back. Im just worried they might say, you have 2 weeks to move to the US, take it or leave it? Does that happen?

Thanking you in advance for your advice.

The two folks in line behind us with CR-1 interviews were from October 2012 and November 2012 filing dates, if that gives you any idea as to how long the wait may be for your interview.

Allanah and ChrisFemaleCanada2013-10-14 08:48:00
CanadaAnyone ever visited their finace(e) for a month from Canada?

How did your POE go?

Allanah came for ~4 months via land and we were detained for ~1 hour for questioning about incomes/etc. She got a crazy stern lecture about the K-1 visa as well.

The good news is you can do it, the bad news is you're not guaranteed that they can.

CanadaDS-160 form photo?

Ok so what you are saying is, you hadn't sent in two photos with your packet three? Or you brought in the same photos you had submitted electronically for the DS-160 and they didn't accept those at the interview?

I sent in 2 passport style photos with packet 3 and I plan on taking in four new passport style photos to the interview. I think you are right, I think they are just making it so that the DS-160 is used for everything but not quite yet...thanks for your help!

When they opened our folder at MTL, our DS-160 was the first page below their checklist (with Allanah's mug shot on it).

If you bring 2 photos that should be good enough (it is all they ask for), but if you have 4 that can't hurt.

Canadai129f accepted 2 months ago, no packet, how does fiance get an interview?

Please do help, sorry about my ignorance here.  I looked through the other questions first but none seem to be the same situation:

My fiance is canadian.

On september 12 2013 we received a form from the bureau of consular affairs stating that a packet should arrive at her address.  It is exactly two months later, and clearly no forms are being sent.  When I log on to U.S. department of state, it says that her case is ready for her to schedule an interview and that a packet is on it's way.

Since she didn't get an actual packet, I need to know what the next step is.  I feel like she should go ahead and schedule the appointment, no?

If so, what forms do we need to send to get this appointment.  Will she have to send in her passport?  If so for how long?  she needs to travel for work in a little over a month.

we called multiple places, consulate included, and sent emails for help but to no avail.

Thanks to anyone who can help

Kirsten and Rocco

If you wait for MTL to send you anything, you'll likely wait forever (we never got packet 3). Plenty of details at http://montreal.usco...-k-1-visas.html and here under the Embassy/Consulate review.

Per the instructions she only sends a photocopy of her passport's biographical page, not the actual passport. They only hold onto her passport during/after the interview in order to put the visa into it.

CanadaVisitor's Pass for Americans visiting Canada?

I cross as much as 3-4 times a month, and have been for 15+ years. I've encountered my share of, we'll say, troublesome border guards. The stories I have... The vast majority are great; they're just trying to do their job and protect their country as best they can. However, some get a god complex and take it too far just because they can, and there's nothing anyone crossing their border can do about it - at least not if they want to get through. We just have to answer their questions and play the game. Small price to pay for crossing international borders, I guess.

As the USC, I (Christopher) get hassled almost every time I cross the border back into the US. CBP pretty much assumes you hate America if you leave for even a day...maybe I just have a face you learn to hate. That's why I got NEXUS. Since then I've not been hassled once.

CanadaConfused about sending Packet 3

I am getting a little confused. On the Montreal consulate website, the packet 3 checklist it says to send the info by email. But reading VJ everyone has been sending through mail. Did I do this wrong? I don't want to screw this up.

Strange: I am having the same confusion. Please message me when you find out.

The packet was revised. Follow the instructions you were given.

DS-160 x 1
DS-156K x 1
DS-230 x 1
DS-156 x 2
US style passport photos of the beneficiary x 2

What about the rest of the papers? Do we mail copies of that too?  Or does he just bring it to the interview?

Wow that was quick!!  Ugh I would honestly rather be going all the way to Vancouver than Montreal.  I hear horror stories of the wait time for an interview at Montreal.  I am hoping by the time I get to the point to book an interview I am one of the lucky ones who only has to wait a month or so.

Our original interview was 77 days from packet 4, but rechecking the site within an hour we found one ~40 days away. All you have to do is recheck the site and you'll likely find a better day.

When did you send it in? As in, Did you send it as soon as the site said Ready? I have mine ready to go and would love to send it in as well.

Per my lil signature timeline we sent it in way later than we could...due to a minor passport issue :)

We would have sent it much sooner, basically I called DoS once it said Ready to find out when MTL got the hard copy. Once they had the hard copy of our case we could have sent Packet 3 in.

So I went on Friday, got the passport pictures i need for the medical and interview. Went and ordered my police check and since the RCMP are the local police for us they were my only choice. They tried to tell me I HAD to have the fingerprints done. I told ehtm that I didn't unless I had a record whcih I knew I didnt so I told them no, jut the checks was fine. I am taking in the Packet3 checklist with me when I pick up my report so that they have accurate information on file for the next poor soul who goes in for an immigration criminal record check. Our Case was transfered to DoS last week and I will be calling every day to get my Case number

It took ~1 week for us to find out that MTL had our case physically in hand. We've sent Packet 3...but now we're waiting on MTL to log it so we can get an interview!

It was quick, I am just frusterated because we have yet to see any update online. It is till says initial review so I can't see if it has gone to the NVC yet. I need to get my police check and will likely stop at the RCMP tonight since they are our local police service. Hopefully that won't take too long to get back. My Passport is good till a year October, so that is all good... I hate all this stress in the planning but I am so gald that that is the stage we are at now.

Well, you really don't need to hear back from the NVC with your case number until you *send* in Packet 3. Visit Vancouver or Montreal's consulate page and download the Packet 3 details and start knocking them out. We're stuck because a lot of them need the passport number and expiration :)

You should be able to have it all done prior to VAC/MTL receiving your hard copy case!

CanadaCell phone plans in the US?

My daughter switched to Virgin Mobile USA - if you're in their coverage area (I believe they're part of AT&T as well or T Mobile) you cannot beat their plans - $55 +tax per month for unlimited everything - text, data and voice.  You can go with $35 or $45 also depending on your voice needs. You pay for the phones outright of course. They offer the latest Apple phones and relatively recent Androids up to the SIII.

I just got virgin mobile.  I am paying $35, unlimited text and data and 300 talk minutes.  I got an awesome phone for $80.. the lg optimus f3

We use Virgin Mobile too. It'll save you at least $500 per year (if not more).

As long as Sprint has decent coverage in your area, this is the only real choice.

Every other company is out to make your life miserable (Verizon, AT&T, etc).

I have a LG G2 phone with Rogers right now, if I unlock it can I use it with Verizon or AT&T?
My husband told me Verizon or AT&T will charge me extra because I have no previous "phone credit" in the US. Is this true?

Never ever heard the phrase "phone credit". Not likely true.

Canadamontreal interview date

quick question guys,

my wife's interview is at montreal consulate early may @ 10:00 AM. is it recommended to be there on the scheduled time or does everyone get there earlier on before they open doors???

Show up at O'dark thirty to get a good spot in line. Worst case scenario you have to come back at your scheduled time. Best case scenario you're out the door by 9am.

secondly, am I allowed to accompny my wife inside the building?

Yes, bring a passport. You'll basically just sit in a chair. Can't bring a phone or anything to keep yourself busy, so enjoy staring at the informative posters the consulate has.

CanadaQuestions about Canadians overstaying in USA

I was going to mention that, but I didn't think all crossings did that.  I know they were working towards sharing data at the borders, but I thought I had read a year ago that they were only doing this at 4 crossings and only for citizens other than US and Canada.  Now that I'm looking back through the articles on this, it looks like the second phase started last June, which was to start setting up all crossings for data sharing, but it still looks like they share just foreigners other than Americans/Canadians.

http://www.cbsa-asfc...rappun-eng.html

I thought Phase II included LPR's as well, but I may be mistaken.

CanadaQuestions about Canadians overstaying in USA

They can tell when you left when you fly.  I read on here a while back where someone had a ticket to leave the country during their K-1 visa period and their AOS was denied for "leaving".  The issue in the post was that they never boarded the plane but was still flagged as having left the country because they were on the passenger manifest.

I just learned from my NEXUS mailings that they now share (December 2013) when you leave at land POE's too.

CanadaK1 visa - After NOA2...

We gave ourselves quite a bit of time (you can see from my signature below), having an intimate family wedding on short notice after POE and planning a large reception (+cerephony) five months later.

MTL is slow, but predictably so (1-3 weeks for the MTL number, 1-2 weeks to process packet 3, 80-120 days until interview, 1-2 weeks for the card). You can be reasonably assured that 6 months from MTL issuing you a case number to receiving your visa is a worst case. This presumes you have nothing funny going on with your visa, your I's are dotted, your T's are crossed, and you've paid in full and on time. However, this is much like horse shoes or hand grenades...its been known to be worse.

awesome thanks for the response. Another question, my interview is on November 13th. My Fiance requested tax transcripts from the IRS but I don't know if we will even have them in time since we just did that yesterday. I have print outs of the 1040 forms that he filed as well as W2's. Is this sufficient or do we NEED the transcripts? Also, if we need the transcripts can he walk into an IRS building and have them print out the transcripts right then and there? Really worried right now...

They very much want the Tax Transcripts from the IRS as it carries more weight than your 1040's and W2's. That being said, the official Packet 4 for MTL states:

q. Proof of Financial Support (Form I-134) and photocopy of supporting documents (IRS transcript or photocopy of the most recent Federal income tax return, bank statements, employment pay slips, etc.)

I read that to mean: if you're not bringing the official stuff, bring everything. We brought tax transcripts, employer letter, W2's, and 2 months of pay stubs.

Just wanting to be clear:

If I paid the $240 MRV fee while scheduling my interview with CSC - I don't need to bring any cash/make any payments while in Montreal - correct?

Thanks in advance!

If you paid the fee online, you do not need to bring any cash/make any payments.

Couple questions!

I am assembling my Interview Packet/Materials and I was wondering if it would be at all necessary/helpful to our case to provide my financial portfolio?  I have assets and would hope that it could strengthen our case (even though my Fiance - the USC - exceeds the income requirement)

Also - what is/how can I retrieve the confirmation that I have registered for DHL/Loomis?  I mistakenly did not print the page when I initially registered.  On my appointment confirmation it has my Loomis Branch listed - is this confirmation?

Thanks in advance!

1. If you meet income requirements, provide 3 years of adequate tax transcripts, letter from your employer, and a few recent pay stubs you do not need anything else.

2. If you go back to the CSC page there is the ability to reprint it, I don't recall exactly what it is called but it will have a Reference ID under Applicant Details and a section called Loomis Information. That reference ID is what is put on your passport.

Calling the DoS may not be necessary for a K1 with regards to logging packet 3, as we received an email immediately when it was logged (I had called in the AM, "not logged yet", and 2 hours later received an email with packet 4).
