Personally, I don't see why any of us would need to buy an expensive English or Russian language learning device. We have something better than these courses. We have our SO's. I know Sasha will teach me the entire Russian language over the next few decades. For free.

I think your SO would only be better if they're a trained pedagogue. Plus I wouldn't want to have to wait decades to be fluent in Russian!

Haha! Yes, you're right. Thankfully, my Sasha is a professional linguist. She doesn't think so, but she's quite modest....most of the time! laughing.gif She's a professional translator and script editor/writer for Sony Pictures. She's pretty fluent in several languages. So, I'm sure I will get a better education from her than any store bought course. Hell, I'm pretty sure she knows more about the rules of English grammar, than I do.

I understand where it could be a tall order for some. (Some couples can't operate in a teacher-student relationship.) However, I learned more from my Alla in one year living with her in Russia than in the rest of the other four years self-studying. Alla has no problem teaching me Russian anymore than I have improving her English. We will have better things to spend our time and cash on than third-party lessons when she arrives. It will remain a priority in our lives, to teach each other, until we are both where we wish to be.

so my situation is different--we don't work on the basics but focus on making my russian more idiomatic. It seems like most of the people here who are serious about learning Russian don't expect their SO to teach them everything, but take classes/have a private tutor/etc.

No one's situation is the same. In our case, my wife has no time to teach me Russian. She hates it. Both of us speak English fluently, her Russian is native while mine is good enough, my French is good, her German could use some help.

It comes down to this: If you have learned another language, another is not a big deal (you know what is involved, and it doesn't bother you.) If not, don't bother. You probably won't like what you need to do.

At this point, my Russian is horrible. It improves when I'm actually there, since I will be speaking it all of the time. In that way, it is about the same as my French - it gets better when I actually use it. I can understand 95% of what people say, and read with decent comprehension. I understand what my wife is saying on the phone (drives her crazy), but at the same time it bothered her when I spoke French and she couldn't understand what I was saying.

Expecting your spouse to teach you is a tall order. It probably won't happen.

National Visa Center (Dept of State)How do you talk to NVC
I found that it was always best to contact NVC about 30 minutes before the close of their business day. Which, I believe, is midnight Eastern Standard time. Not bad at all. I'm not at that stage yet with my K1 petition, but 2 years ago I was there with a CR1 visa. And that is when I had the most luck. In fact, i usually got operators who had all the time in the world to research questions for me. Good luck!! You could also try asking some of your questions here. There are so many experienced users here, that i would consider this place the most comprehensive aide in anyone's K visa journey. Who needs lawyers when we've got each other???

National Visa Center (Dept of State)Taking the scenic route thru NVC
I think you have 1 year to complete the steps at NVC when filing with a CR1/IR1. but I'm not sure. I thought it was like this a few years ago. I canceled a petition of this sort from a few years ago, but I remember having 1 year to complete my steps through NVC. Shoot....but I'm not certain. I do know that your case should still be active. I think if you call them, they will have better answers for you. Good luck!

This little formula really works well. it only took me about 3 minutes to locate the package sent from NVC to Moscow. Its in Moscow now. Arrived on 12-08-07. Though it only says its at the Moscow facility for DHL. Perhaps they dont deliver to that embassy on Sundays. but I also noticed that DHL actually made a delivery to Bangkok, Thailand's embassy today, Sunday. So, who knows...The good news is that my petition is in a package that weighs only a few pounds. My petition alone weighed nearly 4 pounds! I would imagine this could mean a good chance for a quick interview. fewer petitions competing for dates.

Anyway, a very cool find!! good.gif

why, send it ASAP, the sooner the better

I do not agree. The embassy wants all evidence to be as current as possible. I sent everything to Sasha less than 2 weeks before her interview (which is Friday!) I actually think the OP should wait until April to send the documents. This way they will have very recent paychecks, letter of employment, emails, phone records, etc. I think it could be risky to send it too early. Just my opinion.

Can anyone tell me which Aff. of Sup. the embassy in Moscow requires? In the K1 step-by-step guide it's mentioned that the I-134 is needed, but some also/instead require the I-864. Just wondering. Thanks for the help.

And remember, that for every I134 submitted there needs to be a G-325A for each sponsor, with passport photo. at least it used to be this way. So, if you have two sponsors, you will most likely need that biographical info for each. Any others know if I'm correct with this?

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionVisa interview APPROVED!
Congratulations!! I have to think that every form is crucial to your visa and process. I would call the embassy and tell them what happened. Maybe they'll just ask you to deliver it to them in the morning. Either way, it won't change your outcome of getting this visa, unless they realize it before they send it to you. Can't hurt to go back and give it to them right? As for the classification of your previous visa to the states, I am not exactly sure what the difference is, but I've known students that were here for the same job and each had a different type. Don't see how it will harm you. Just my opinion. :D

US Embassy and Consulate Discussionjust a couple questions ??
I think each consulate or embassy has their own rules for the interviews. In Russia the USC is not permitted to attend the interview, but can wait outside. Look for that embassy online and go to their website. You should find ways of answering that question there. Or perhaps someone who's already been through it can tell you. I may be wrong, but I thought animals had to be quarantined when coming into the States. Not sure about that one.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionDenial Because of Public Assistance
I would have to side with the government here. I for one wouldnt want to pay more tax dollars to aid in the living for immigrants. Legal or illegal. But if the petitioner can provide a stable living, i dont see why the beneficiary's income or support would matter here.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionI-134 Supporting Docs
Each embassy in different countries sets their own requirements. Try to find the website for your embassy. there should be something noted there. In Moscow, the I-134 isn't mandatory but may be requested by the officer. That's just an example. Not sure what Bogota requires as supporting evidence. I'd send everything possible to your SO just in case.
