Yeah Buck! You two must be ecstatic! When are they planning on coming to the USA?

March 24 is the day......... although I did an American durak thing when I originally scheduled the flight and only allowed them an hour to change planes at Sheremetyevo airport. Natalia very politely told me that I was insane if I thought that they could transfer from Sheremetyevo 1 to Sheremetyevo 2, go through customs, and check their luggage in under an hour. She was right of course but I was able to correct the error and reschedule the first leg of the journey without too much difficulty. tongue.gif

Sasha is arriving the same day! March 24th. Is Natalia going to JFK as well? I'm flying to JFK to meet her, then we're flying straight to Richmond together. congratulations again! Just 2 more weeks. kicking.gif

I've been taking this all in and I think either this guy is a Satellite wannabe running a good story on us, or a rookie of the lowest order. Either way I don't see how this forum is the right venue to run out this soap opera. There's other web sites for meeting Russian women, match-making, how to date FSU women, and scammers, etc.

I certainly don't see a fiancee visa in this guy's future with this woman should any of this story be true. But I'm betting this guy is laughing his a** off at us folks for responding to this Russian bride "tall tale."

I will also offer that, in my experience, it's unlikely today to find Russian women who think American men are going to dump them on the streets of America or do some kind of "reverse scam." Almost every Russian woman has a friend, relative or colleague who married an American man and had a good result. Yes, there might be envy among the so called "biddies' but Russian women know Russian women...and this woman is no youngster, so she ought to be hip to the ways of pettiness one might encounter in Siberian social circles.

And if they actually had a real meeting in St. Petersburg, usually such a meeting reveals the vibes the couple has going on. If the woman met this guy and still listens to "biddies" and walks away from what might be her one shot for getting out of Siberia...well that does not feel right to me.

On top of that, she has a sick child and I've been to a Siberia hospital...and if my kid was really sick I'd do whatever it takes to get them out of Russia and to the USA. Additionally, Siberia has a very high women to men ratio...so women are beating the bushes to find husbands...certainly not a place to be difficult and cavalier towards a potential American husband for lack of an engagement ring. And how would that expensive ring be delivered anyway? DHL? How romantic!

I try to suspend my disbelief here but it's tough...very tough to buy in on this drama that has story line that changes every few days. Whether BS artist or rookie, maybe we need to offer him some tough love..and say bye bye.

Well Damn! My man just laid the hammer down! ohmy.gif

Whatever, get away from this and put it behind you as soon as you can.

If a ring means that much to anyone (American, Russian, whatever) it is clearly more important to them than you are. Be glad you found out now.

My wife would love to have had a bigger engagement ring, but so would everyone. I am sorry this happened to you. It sucks for someone to waste a year of their life.

My usual advice stands - do not meet foreigners on websites. You are asking for trouble. If for some reason you want to marry someone from Russia, move there. You will find someone before too long. You won't have to worry about any of this scam BS. And you will probably get paid more in Russia than you make now in the US. (Depending on what you do, the market for Western Expats in Russia is very strong, since no one wants to go there, and no one speaks the language.) It also costs next to nothing to study Russian in a university there, which is also a good idea.

I as well. Finding out now is far, far, better than finding out here later. I don't buy into her ring excuse for one moment. Engagement rings are not even custom (although it is slowly gaining favour) and wedding rings tend to be simple gold bands. Most of us here will tell you, rings are far less a value, to these ladies, than the man they wish to spend their life with.

It took me a lot of work for me to convince my guy to get me an engagement ring someday. smile.gif it's definitely not russian custom at all, and a lot of the girls who insist on a big ring there are pretty much marrying for monetary reasons, which he sees about being glorified prostitution so he couldn't understand why i needed a diamond ring. It took a lot of back-and-forth to convince him that it wasn't about materialism but instead about american tradition and growing up a little girl in America who always dreamed of receiving an engagement ring. smile.gif I am sure that all of your ladies appreciated receiving a nice ring, but it's definitely not par for the course in a normal russian marriage.

I never thought about it the other way around. Russian man/American woman. I can see where it would take a little convincing. They dont have this same tradition. And I can understand why you wanted one.

My Former American Wife:
Works 8 to 9 hours a day. Comes home routinely too tired to fix supper. Instead of cooking, brings home big bag of McDonald's or orders pizza. After supper sits on the coach and reads mail and then watches television. Children are expected to do most of the laundry and clean the kitchen since she worked all day.

My Russian Fiancée:
Works 9 to 10 hours a day. Comes home and fixes supper for the family, including her own parents. Has never brought home supper. (What drive-through? Even if there were, she'd never bring home this "not useful" food.) After supper will routinely go "on street" to walk or join her children in play. After they return, she puts them to bed and then does all the housework herself.
Just make sure you are not doing what your former American wife was doing. Otherwise it won't be long before your Russian wife also gets fed up with her working "double" shifts (one at home and one at work).
Also some American women on VJ might find that what you are really looking for is a housekeeper / maid / cook / child care hand. And as far as I underatand, nobody workers harder at "work" then Americans. At least those folks who have worked both in Russia and the US tend to say we work harder here. So what your former wife was doing might be justifiable if she was really tired.

I have to agree with this bit. I've seen the typical Russian work day and work ethic, and there's absolutely no comparison. A majority of Americans are now working more than one job. We eat in our cars on the way to work. Our luches are shorter (but heavier). I have seen first hand dozens of times where Europeans come to the States and comment immediately on how hard and long Americans work. Now I'm not saying that they can't handle it. They adapt very quickly and usually perform exceptionally. But for those who havent worked here before, it can be a wakeup call. yes.gif Its going to take alot of support and help by the USC to get all of the day's work done. That's for sure.

Actually the American lifestyle lends itself to getting fat especially if you live outside of big cities. I know of many ladies who moved here and easily gained 10 pounds a year and quickly lost their figure!

True, but if you compared 50+ year old women from Russia and the US, I think you'd see that our older ladies here maintain a slimmer figure. Its also true that American women age better. I've always said that young Russian women are much more beautiful than young American women. But the opposite seems to be true for older women. Older American women have more options for health care and beauty. Sasha lived in the US twice and each time she seemed to actually lose weight. She's also very active in America.

Wonder if this thread goes on long enough, if it can circle around far enough to wind up back on engagement rings again? no0pb.gif

I hosted a couple of Ukraines at my house and the organization they came through gave them $25 a day to eat on. The first thing they wanted to do was go to the grocery store. After about 3 days, they felt it was cheaper to eat out than to buy food and cook it.

I think this is true very often but the food you end up eating is certainly the highest of fat content.

Someone brought up the issue of older RW always being fat (or nearly) and I think it is true, of the RW I see there (and RW here) many do in fact get fat.
Is anyones MIL an exception?

As one lady explained to me, RW expect to get fat when they enter that stage in life, it is normal for a woman to cling to fitness and beauty when she is young but all Russian woman go through a mental change at about 35, what was important before has changed to something else. In the same way a 22 yr old man dreads loosing his hair yet a 45 yr old man can accept it easier.

They say the best predictor of what your wife will look like tomorrow is "what does her mother look like now?"
Weren't all these round 47 yr old ladies once 47 kilo babes too?

Wonder how many guys would be "ok' with their wife sporting the bod of their mother inlaw?

If your girl reads this forum, we will understand if you speak in "safe" terms laughing.gif

Older Russian women who actually remain thin are very rare it seems. I know I pray that my sweet little Sasha will remain this way, but its only because I know that I will never be able to get fat. In my family no man is overweight. Just doesnt happen. I wouldnt want my poor Sasha to get fat alone.. laughing.gif . Mayo must be even more popular in Korea. Because most of the mayo I've seen in Russia comes in large buckets with Korean writing all over them.

Now that's ironic because when I was in Korea I couldn't find mayo in anything larger than a big squeeze bottle. My Russian roommate and all her friends used to have me buy bigger jars of it from the base because we couldn't buy it in the local shops. Then again, we didn't go to the big supermarkets, only to the local neighborhood markets. I used to buy a $#!tload of sour cream too!

But Koreans, being just like Americans, will produce and market anything, even if they really don't like it that much as long as someone will buy it.

True! (about the marketing) Hahaha. I'm a big sour cream fan myself. Love it on all sorts of things. I use so much of it that it makes my steaming bowls of chili cold in seconds.

Although, if she needs to get that ring off while in Russia, there's probably a whole lot of Mayo that would be readily available.

Hahaha! Yes indeed! As you know they eat that stuff on everything. In fact the buckets they buy it in (yes, I said buckets, because that's what they are wink.gif ) are so bigyou need a hatchback automobile just to get it home! My soon to be brother-in-law got me hooked on a dollop of mayo in my soup. Actually not bad. And let's not get started on ketchup. Lord, how they drink that stuff down!!! Anyway, sorry to be so off topic here. Back to rings, everyone. laughing.gif

Yeah, it is quite a ring! A fine one indeed. But I'm sorry if I sounded as though I was bragging. I didn't mean to. Though I am pretty proud of it. And sooo happy that Sasha loves it so much. She won't take it off her finger. Or can't...don't really know!! Hahaha. Man, they've got ketchup in dozens of styles and flavors on the shelves in the stores. Perhaps you didnt recognize it because the bottles are quite different looking that ours. They have about as many varieties as we have for barbeque sauces. I absolutely love ?????? (shashlyk) and it used to horrify me when they would smear it all over those luscious pieces marinated pork chunks. I will use flavored ketchup occasionally on it just for something a little different. But generally I dont use it on anything. I've seen Russians dip their pizza in ketchup, but never seen it with mayo. In fact Russian pizza just makes me cringe. Its not pizza at all. I'd rather frozen pork in flavorless gelatin. Yuk!! That's really the only Russian food I dont like. Well, that and some variations of Salo....or however its spelled in English. Nothing like slabs of cold pig fat with the skin and hair still in tact....mmmmm yummy. Took me a while to get used to orange caviar. Growing up, my father and I actually bought that stuff at bait shops before fishing for rainbow trout. In Ct that's the only place you can find the stuff. Bait shops. I with you on the mayonnaise, 100%, but catsup is less of thing, it seems, in my fiancée's parts. I didn't see catsup in many grocery carts or cafés. They seem to only slather it on at the local McDonald's. laughing.gif

That is one fine ring you got Sasha! good.gif

Cool!

Bait shops. Tricky getting them little bastards on the hooks. laughing.gif

Damn, what have we done to the ring thread?! #######. Sorry.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusEngagement Rings
During this recent trip to Moscow, I presented Sasha with a 1 carat diamond in an antique setting on a platinum band encrusted with 6 small diamonds. She was very pleasantly surprised. I also officially asked her parents' permission.....in Russian even!! Oy. That was extremely difficult! laughing.gif Then I re-proposed to her as her parents witnessed. We had been engaged for a long while, hence the 129f in July, but I never officially had the chance to ask her parents in person. They gave us their blessings of course, then we had a nice dinner to celebrate afterwards with her extended family. We agreed that it was best to wear wedding bands on the right hand while in Russia and on the left while in the States. I was a little worried about someone noticing her ring and trying to steal it, but then I noticed how snug her ring fits. I'm confident that stone is going nowhere. Since I bought the ring here and she was there, I had to make a rough guess to her finger size. Wanted it to be a surprise. I must say that it is a perfect fit for security. Would take a tub of Crisco to ease that baby off! jest.gif well, not really. but you get the idea.

Her family was certainly not used to such a tradition. And they seemed to really like the ring. Most Russians don't wear engagement rings, and some dont even wear wedding rings. And I noticed that when women do wear wedding rings, they are simple yellow gold bands without stones. So, I'm sure to most Russians Sasha will appear to be married already. Fine by me. biggrin.gif

I hate watching American shows (TV or movies) in Russia...they do that annoying voice over thing where the Russian voice kind of drowns out the underlying English lines. Rarely there will be a real dubbing of a show but usually it's that voice over cheesy technique.

Yes. And I hate when the Russian narrator reads every actor's name during the opening credits. Its annoying the way they dub. Its always too loud to even hear the other sounds within the scenes. Takes the ambiance out of every movie or show completely.

Have you seen the new Night Rider? Sweet jeebus it's awful. I mean, camp was part of what made the original show fun, but this show isn't even campy in a fun way. It's just a 60 minute Ford commercial, except the actors are worse than your average car commercial actors. It's sooooooooo bad.

After being a fan of the original, and seeing the promos for the new show....I thought "I will not watch that garbage". Didn't want it to taint my love for the original. Glad I chose to ignore it. Heard so much negative feedback.

Hahahaa.... I think that's the general idea. Those of us less physically gifted will need to think of something different to put our SO's in the mood. laughing.gif

Ahhhhhh....well this might have been why I had such a hard time understanding the reference. See, I just don't have the ground clearance to "helicopter." laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif

Aaaaaahhhhh..... OK...... 2 inch legs...... gotcha. wink.gif

blink.gif Boy. I must have been away too long. hahaha laughing.gif This maneuver usually works best with sound effects also. Then you've gotta add in the midair refueling.

You are correct, Jeff! We've been way too happy to bother with any of these arguments, though they are entertaining. And we could care less about the stereotypes. They don't affect us one bit. we know who we are and how we love. Looks like so many Americans here are already "experts" on Russian people and culture. At least, they think they are. so, who are we to say differently? laughing.gif

Dang! It looks like there's a whole lot of fun going on in here now. And, as always, I have been missing out. I was just thinking earlier today about Jeff's hats, and wondering when the St. Pat's Day hats will appear. I think everyone here is doing a great job ignoring the original topic, and in our usual fashion, changing the subject to something a little more light hearted. good.gif
