I think it will be pretty cool to sail into New York as a brand new immigrant laughing.gif

What a fabulous idea, especially if it sails past the Statue of Liberty. I think you should definitely go for it. kicking.gif

Yes it sails right past the statue of Liberty, and its a weird feeling that many before have emigrated that way. I am so glad I chose to arrive in the States by the Queen Mary.

United KingdomSailing transatlantic on the Queen Mary...
It was meeeee I came over on Queen Mary. It was excellent!!! I would higly recommend it.

We actually chose the cheapest cabin as we were not really concerned about a balcony or anything like that, but when we got on board we had been upgraded and had a window which was very nice.

We came over on the June crossing and being a Tranatlantic crossing my vision of sunbathing around the pool sipping cocktails was swapped for a wind swept walk around the decks.

I am not really sure what else you want to know so if you have anything specific either ask me here or PM me, and don't worry you can never ask me too many questions about the experience on the QMII

I think if you are brought up with Big Ben on New Years Eve, then nothing else will do. Now I have my recording courtesy of UK Nova (who are the best I have to add). I will be keeping it for future years.

Hopefully next year we will finally have a house, I will have a big new years eve party for all my neighbours and show them a good old fashioned English New Years Eve!!!

Unfortunately i get cable as part of my rent package and it does not include BBC America....boo hoo

I did however download the BBC news 24 from UK nova. They did the chimes and the fireworks, so i played that just before midnight then watched the ball for hubby.

Drank some champagne and then to bed.

Happy New Year to all

I don't know if it will work over there but if you log onto
http://news.bbc.co.uk/
then "watch live" BBC News 24 near the top of the page.
Let me know if you can watch as I want to know this for when I move.
If you can then I'm 100% sure you will be able to see Big Ben strike the new year in on here.

Unfortunately you cannot get the uk version live you have to watch the international one. Who knows maybe this year they will show big ben!

I just cannot seem to get into the spirit of christmas or new year here in the States. I guess I am just so used to my own traditions in the UK.

New Years Eve is approaching and for me it doesnt matter how many balls drop in times square...lol it will never quite signify the start of the New Year like the chimes of Big Ben.

I searched last year for a site where I can watch and listen to this (albeit hours early) just to try and get in the spirit of things.

Does anyone know how or where you can listen or watch the UK ringing in 2008.

Thanks folks

I am looking to transfer small amounts to start with probably around $200 at a time, just enough to allow me to pay payments on my UK credit card. How much charges would I incur doing this and is it worth it for such small amounts. I would of course be saving to transfer larger amounts to hopefully accumulate enough to pay it all off but initially I gotta start small.

Any advice??

Thanks

if you plan on doing smaller amounts, then im not sure if companies like interchange will even take it...i was told the minimum transfer was £500.
I would definitley recommend unsing Citi Bank (as this is what i have done to transfer small amount of cash over several times a month since the summer.
http://www.citibank....p;merchant=citi
They sell it as a Savers Account but in essence it is open to anyone who wants to be able to access cash at cash points in UK and USA. They dont charge anything for the transfers (Interchange charge £15 - this is fine on one-off big sums, but regular low transfers will get stung by this charge) and they have as good an exchange rate as anywhere.
Definitely worth a look!

Thank you!!

Made a transfer 2 days ago.

Ring Nat West

Go through Security.

Ask for International team to make a transfer.

Give them details of your US Bank account.

Tell them you have heard their terms of biusiness and do not want to hear it again.

2 choices are standard or urgent. Urgent costs more.

do you know if you can do this to transfer money back to NatWest?

United KingdomHow to Cash That Last UK Paycheck
QUOTE (psiprez @ May 26 2008, 05:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
We've just realized that since he gets paid only once on the fifth of each month, his last paycheck (which will include his unused vacation and sick days) will not be issued until after he has moved to the US. He asked about getting it a few weeks in advance, while he was still over there, but the company is unable to do payroll that way. They will have to mail it to him here in the US.

I happen to work in a bank, and we could of course just deposit it into our US account, but then it can take up to six weeks to receive the money. On top of that, the exchange rate is about 15% lower than if he cashed it and exchanged it for dollars in the UK. Of course, we would like to receive the money at the soonest time and at a better exchange rate, but I cannot think of another way to do it.

So my question is, how have you handled, or plan to handle this situation?

Maybe he could have someone pay it into his UK bank account and then you can use the ATM in the US

United KingdomTraditional English Sunday Roast
I last had a proper english breakfast when my parents were here in November. We took them to New York and went to Dempseys bar. The breakfast was amazing although it did come with chips which I thought was a little unusual, but the rest was great.

Almost worth a trip to NY just for a breakfast....lol

United KingdomIs this really a cultural difference?
I think it depends on where you live. I have seen cats that have been hit by cars both here and in the UK. If you live in the countryside then its probably fine to let your cats out. If you live in a more urban area I would keep them indoors.

I have 2 cats and they stay indoors, I have a busy road right near my house so its best to keep them inside IMO.
