Ha, kind of proves that some people do not read the post.

Won 't get into the Pros of USC, wife has dual citizenship, we had to register our marriage in her country, that was free, but have to pay extra bucks to maintain two passports, so far, that is the only Con I am aware of.

Proof that people only skim read! lol

US Citizenship General DiscussionPros & Cons of Citizenship?
QUOTE (Mel & Sharon @ Jan 16 2009, 02:01 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'm originally from Canada, moved to the US to get married in 2003. I am no longer married to the US citizen, the marriage ended in divorce in 2006. I recently remarried to a US citizen. I believe I'm eligible for citizenship this April which will be five years after my Adjustment of Status interview where I received my first green card.

My question is this ... are there any pros & cons to having dual citizenship? I believe there are some estate tax implications to the surviving spouse not being a US citizen but I don't know exactly what they are. My husband and I are getting to an age where we need to think about these things. Any other consequences to not applying for citizenship?

Congratulations Aussielad......I remember you were going through the original visa process at the same time as me. I remember you arriving here!!

It seems so long ago, and here we are both getting citizenship at the same time too.

Good Luck and let the countdown begin.....three!

Depending what your home country flag is, you could do a half/half. The US and UK flags are easy to do this with, but not all flags are.

I have to say that for $13 the flash cards are great!! I am now down to a pile of 97 and a pile of 3 (dont knows) although this thread has given me hope for those 3 cards have multiple answers and to think I only need to know 1 is very encouraging....

Definitely take your 2008 tax return with you if you didn't submit it already. Other things to carry - all your passports and your current greencard (or extension letter) - anything else that you might think they might ask you for - throw them in a folder and if they ask, you have it. Good Luck

I submitted my taxes online, will that do?

Haha, I asked almost exactly the same question a few weeks back. blush.gif On my invitation it said I had to bring all the originals of copies I had submitted with my N-400. And it also gave special instructions if I filed as the spouse of a U.S. citizen etc.

I took:

My NOAs & invitation for the interview
Greencard
Driver's License
Passports I used to enter the U.S. (expired and current one)
Passport pictures (I had extras from my application)
Birth certificate of U.S. citizen husband
Birth certificates of U.S. citizen children
My birth certificate (It's on no list but I've read that IOs have asked for that before)
Marriage certificate
Military orders (we were stationed overseas)
Lease
Car Titles with both names on them
Utility bills with both names on them
Bank statement of joint bank accounts
Tax returns & tax transcripts for joint returns for the past six years
Copies of our changes of address
Travel itineraries

If you're male, you need to bring your Selective Service Registration.

Also, I read that it's advisable to take a pen and pencil with you.

I also had my husband there with me. I've heard that the IO wanted to talk to the U.S. citizen spouse before. But my husband wasn't even allowed in the interview room with me.

In the end, all I needed were my current passport, greencard and driver's license. But I wanted to be on the safe side and have any document the IO might ask for. Wouldn't it be too bad if I had it at home and would have to put up with a delay because the IO wanted to see it and I didn't bring it? I'd rather carry too much and take it home again.

Good luck on your interview, I'm sure you will be just fine. good.gif

Thanks Stella very comprehensive.

I would have thought that if you have already brought a woman from the Phillipines to be your wife, then you would be a bit more savvy on what is what with permanent residency/citizenship!!

I suggest you do some homework!!

She was a Chinese woman and she had already lived in USA on a work visa, and we had lawyers do most of the work like 4 years ago.. So trying to remember everything is kinda hard.

Ok well thanks for the answers all. I hope this wont be too much of an issue with them I do relize I married a foriegner before but it did last 3 years and im just now getting a divorce after the 4th. Any advice on extra steps I should take while trying to apply for my K1? I love this girl so much I cant stand being away from her, although we talk all day and night...

You have absolutely nothing to worry about. I personally know someone that got a divorce after 3 years of marriage and after marrying a Brazilian who was already in the country then immediately applying for the K-1 for someone else. The second woman is here and she has already been approved for 2 year green card.

Really, you have more to worry about if your income can't support the TWO of them. You know, you are liable for the first one for 10 years or until she is a citizen.

One thing though, my friend who married the Brazilian did go to the RP a lot during the K-1 process to bolster his case.

Ok I have a descent job I guess, it's not "full time" but I do work close to 32 hours a week (I was full time but had to leave company for 6months for medical and its really tuff to get back full time status, altough I have been with company 3+ years) and last tax return was around 30k but I also have yikes unreported income from tips... I know that 125% above poverty is around 21k for you and wife, but what is it for a 2nd wife?

Its not about earning enough to satisfy immigration, what about the reality can you really live and support 3 people on 30K..if so I would love some tips!!

US Citizenship General DiscussionPassport - Walk In
QUOTE (phl_nov08 @ May 13 2009, 05:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When I completed my oath ceremony last week, there were letters in the envelope with the certificates authorizing new citizens to do walk-ins at the Philadelphia Passport Office (valid for I think 30 days).

Not heard of this before, so might be new?

I completed the process yesterday and today to get my passport. Cost is the same as doing expedited application at the post office, i.e. $180 (including the card), plus the costs to get to Philadelphia (train for me plus subway, x 2), plus the time to do it. Worth it to me to end this process, and without having to have the certificate or passport going through the post.

Also, probably only useful (or available) if you are located near one of the regional passport offices. Or maybe only here in Philadelphia, I don't know. But I feel lucky!!

P

Cool your done!!
