I'm super excited because I FINALLY was about to get "free" round trip airfare to Montego Bay!

I'd been checking daily since finding out the interview date, HOPING the price of the flight would go down... but nope. It was stuck at $507 every single day. The other thing I hoped would happen was that my 20,000 bonus miles from the Continental MasterCard would go through in time for me to get a flight. Every day I checked it, but my # of miles hadn't changed. Until today! kicking.gif I was able to use the bonus miles & pay taxes/fees ($52) for next month's trip. That savings will come in VERY handy. star_smile.gif

See Nat, just as JG said the other day, it always works out. Good job!

Thats funny! I was raised Methodist.. not that my family ever went to church after I was about 3 years old! I hated church when I was little. I wanted to be with my mom and they didnt let the children upstairs during mass. So I was baptised in this little church on an island where my grandfather lived here in Maine and when Tierra and I moved back I had her baptized there as well.. the pastor was so nice... but all these little blue haired ladies wondering where the heck my husband was!! LOL

When I lived in MD, Tierra's father and I went to a methodist church there... clapping, singing and hallelujas all around. There is a HUGE difference between southern Methodist and us Yankees up here in conservative New England!

You ain't kidding Cat!! I love the south!

I am sending Tierra to Bible Camp this week. I was so happy to see all the brown kids that were there monday morning. I wish there were more integrated churches here. Tierra's father sang in the church choir down in MD, had a CD released and everything... I can't find a church ANYWhere in Maine that has a kids choir. I hate to say it but "white" church is boring.. I actually enjoyed going to church with Tierra's dad. I was the only white person there and NEVER felt out of place.

I'm with you, most of the churches I've been raised with have been BORING! The songs are boring & it all seems pretty stiff even though the people are nice. Lehi thought the worship was boring when we went with my parents to their church when he first got here BUT, he loved how short the service was! Start at 10:30 & done at noon! He's willing to go any time since it's so short! good.gif laughing.gif

Yes!! My kids love the "in & out" too. I flip flop between thinking church is boring or serene. My days are spent running crazy, nice to have that hour of "peace" once a week.

You know it really came down to me not really knowing how to relate. We were culturely different and not just by our skin tones. For an example, as teenagers we tend to like music...well the talk was Britney Spears this and Britney Spears that...and I was like..95 South Boyz and Mase and Puff Daddy. I wasn't mean to anyone and they weren't mean to me.

But I see my question was taken out of your response. I was wondering why you think they said hi to him and not you. Was it make him "feel" comfortable?

Ok, that makes sense.

Missed your question...I think they were just going out of their way to be friendly. These were strangers on the street..not people I knew.

QUOTE (^KK^ @ Aug 18 2009, 02:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
For my own personal experience, the best situation for me is when there is a nice diverse setting (either work, school, or neighborhood). I grew up in majority black elementary and middle school. For high school, I got this idea that I wanted to go to a different school than my friend or neighbors. I went to a majority white school. I still had majority black friends. All of my friends (mainly black) were not in honors classes. I asked the guidance counselor to downgrade me to regular so that I could have classes with my friends. She called my parents on me (that snitch) and I wasn't allowed to get out of the honors classes. I was all the only black person in my classes. Except when I took electives and even sometimes I was the only black (no counting the teacher) as none of my friend thought Accounting in high school was fun. No one was mean to me...but I felt sooo out of place and really didn't enjoy my high school days to the fullest. But at home and work, I was never the only black.

I went to a majority black college....LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! I met all kinds of people mixed, carribbean, african, students from Texas, New Orleans, Cali, NYC, Philly, and of course Florida. It was just nice to meet all of these black people but we were still culturely different. I admit I was nervous entering in the Corporate environment. We had a session at school to address the cultural shock (that's what they called it).

I have notice about myself that if I'm the only black (lets say in a training class) and there are other minorities , Indians and hispanics...I usually feel more comfortable..even forget the fact that I'm the only sista in there.

But why do you feel uncomfortable KK? Is it because they MAKE you feel uncomfortable or is it just your own perception? For instance, when I went to a Jamaican club in NYC and it starts filling up and me and there are only like 4 white people there, I'm totally fine with it. My best friend was like we gotta go. The way I look at it is we are people....we can't change the skin we were born it like we can change our hair....just love who you are and be the best person you are. I hate the fact that people still pay attention to the "differences"....

Ok VJers.. I have a question that has been lurking on my mind (hope it hasn't been asked and if it has, please lead me to the page):

How hard would you think it would be or has it been for your SO to get accustomed to living in a town/city that is predominantly white? I ask this because I was talking w/ my hubby about living in such an area and he states that he doesn't know if he could. Now he did say that since he loved me, he would live there, but he strongly thinks he'd try to convince me to move. It is a culture shock for them to move to another country in itself, but to also move to where there are very very few minorities. Have any of you experienced such a thing??

*sidenote:
I am in no way, shape or form racist and I do not ask this to hurt feelings or cause drama. Just a curious mind is all I have, blush.gif

It was apparently VERY hard in my case....

why do you say it was hard? were people being mean? or it was hard for him to finally adjust to the town.

Never mean...in fact I notice up here that white people actually go out of their way to say hi and be friendly to blacks. Not a word to me, but a hi or hello to him. It was apparently more of an issue within himself and not being comfortable in his own skin....

I almost said "JG, don't you remember the bunny??" LOL - but you make some good points here Jawi.

I liked it. One guy had "issues" with not being my #1. He whined so much, he had to go.

LMAO!! He went from being # 2 to ZERO!!! That didn't work quite the way he wanted..... rofl.gif

So, I forgot to tell you guys.....Driving home last night. When I turn on the street by my house, I see a cop with lights on. Drive around him cause he's blocking the street and what do I see? My son sitting in the car he has pulled over and is giving a ticket to. I texted him and I said, see why you shouldn't speed dumbass. He texts me back, how you know. I said I know everything.

When I ask him how fast he was going, he says, I don't know, maybe 50. Depending on where he got caught at (and he's unclear on this part), it was either a 30 or a 40 mph zone.

Ouch! How bad was that ticket?

I would look into it - I know that Air JA has a program where they will escort the child, even through the immigration -

Found the link:

http://airjamaica.com/minors.aspx

It's a $100 fee to the US - I would check Jet Blue too - As long as he was on a direct flight, I would think he would be okay.

Thanks - I checked AJ before about it. I'm thinking it would be best for him to fly that because it's mostly Jamaicans on the plane so he would be more in his comfort zone. But Jetblue has Directv on each seat - lol!

I would let him fly by himself!!! My then 7 year old flew to England by himself no problems. Money would be better spent on him when he gets here.

I was actually thinking of your son when we were having this convo last night. And you are right on point about the money - the cost of a plane ticket for me is the same cost as buying him a new bed, which he will need.

I guess I'm worried a little because there have been no k1s to do the interview without their SO being there too. I included a note as to why I couldn't be there...but now I think I should have gotten the doctor to write one. A said that it will be fine...he will just tell them about all the surgeries and what I have been dealing with.

That's understandable, but on the other hand you guys have 4 years worth of evidence!!

offtopic45vn.gif I need some opinions - Anthony and I have been discussing Jr flying here (WHEN he ever gets that visa). I was planning on going down to get him, but A says that he can/will fly here by himself - said it makes no sense in spending that extra money (which we don't really have) for my ticket. He is 11 so definitely not a baby, but has never flown before - let alone left Jamaica.

And of course on the Today show this morning there was a story about Continential Airlines sending an 8 year old and a 10 year old on the wrong flight - two separate incidences.
