QUOTE (monicatony @ Jun 8 2009, 05:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Thanks Krikit! I just feel better knowing someone else tried it. I have already "moved" to the US but want to go back to Canada and get my car and bring it over. I am wondering what I should say (or not say) at the border. I just hope they don't stop me saying I cannot bring the car at all without the compliance letter. I will check with our insurance agent here in Indiana to see if they will cover the car, even temporarily... Wish me luck.
Monica

oops i missed this part. yes you're eligible to get insurance on your car. I called Geico and they said they will cover it for 6 months. BUT within 30 days of starting your insurance with them, you will need to have a State license and give up your canadian one.

Yep, i drove my car through the border and I had 3 months canadian insurance on it. I called the DMV and they said they needed an SSN to have my license. But from WAshington DMV policy, I have to convert my license 30 days after establishing residency. So, technically i cant establish residency w/o my SSN wink.gif

my canadian insurance expires at the end of July and the border told me that I dont have to import my car right away. I actually forgot to ask them how long I have until i need to import my car. but they said, make sure my car is covered by insurance when im importing. and while waiting for my SSN & the end of my insurance, i decided to request for a compliance letter from Chrysler. it turns out that even though my car was not on the list of importable vehicles, I was still able to do so. I am doing that some time in July.

Oh yeah, my husband has auto insurance and I can be covered under his too w/ my canadian driver's license. and the insurance company said they can insure my car too with BC plates.

im not sure if this applies to your auto insurance companies, but if i cancel my insurance before its done, i have to return the license plate. but if i dont cancel it, i can keep my license plate. not sure if that's helpful to anyone else.

I dont see MISS VICKIES chips on the list. dear god i have looked for these chips and the only thing that comes close to it is "kettle" chips. My Canuck friends visited on December and they brought 3 grocery bag full of miss vickies chips and my parents brough 2 more grocery bags of them. My husbad told me that they could not be that special until he and his friend tried them and it is very addicting. they finished 1+ bag of the chips each and they are not the small bags. LOL

i think they are looking at your hours if you qualify for EI. and you're already stating that you're relocating so you shouldnt have a problem.

But Texanadian is the expert with this and can confirm whats the correct answer.

i just reported my hours for the last 2 weeks from december. I sent my report card on Dec 28 and Donna hasnt received it yet. I wish there was an easier way to do this. I would send Donna an email and she used accept emails but there is a new "policy" and she doesnt like to get reports or any other information about you except if she authorizes you to send her some info by email. so keep that in mind. She will just send you a generic message saying do not email her personal information due to new policy

My cards are extremely slow coming, I think the last one I sent back was for the 2nd week in November! That was about a month ago now. Doesn't really matter right now that its behind but once my EAD comes I will have to call them and see if they can send me a bunch or process it over the phone.

They wont send you pre printed ones. I tried. If the cards don't get to you by the end of the 2 week period, just call Donna and she will process it over the phone. this has happened to me before.

I think Canada Post has the slowest service ever! it takes 2 days for my mail to get from Washington to Arizona but Canada Post would take 3 days just to get a mail delivered locally.

I am not sure if its b/c i live at the other side of the continent or Canada post is just overly terrible, but my report cards NEVER get to her. and if it ever does, it takes 2 weeks or more. So, i always send them out like always (even though i know she'll never receive it), then I call her 1 week later and asks her if she received my report card yet. She'll tell me no and we end up processing my EI info over the phone. then my money is deposited the next business day. However, i dont think they do direct deposits on Mondays. I've been doing it this way since August 2009.

I worked until April 2009 and have no properties or assets. so when i file my canadian taxes, i have to report my worlwide income just like in US

Ive been collecting EI and working part time under 30 hours. I want to quit my current part time job cuz the girl i work with can be really unbearable when she is stressed. plus I work for a law office dealing with criminal cases and domestic. i dont really want to work here anymore since i've learned so many F'd up sh!t - things that happens in Law and Order. i have a love and hate relationship with my job but i could live w/o seeing any molestation and other weird stuff.

Would I stop getting my EI if I quit a part time job?

fyi - for those who don't know... you are able to collect EI when you work under 30 hours. EI will pay the difference from your income.

i dont know about US unemployment but I talked to Donna and she said even if I am working, i should continue filling out my claim cards and send them back. So when I stop working, they can determine that I have no more income coming in and they will start sending me my EI. I can collect EI as long as im covered under the 41 week period. this is a good news. Now i dont have to worry so much about getting another job right away as Ill be able to collect until April of next year. smile.gif

I had the same problem, but when signing in for the first time, I had to use Ontario as my home province. I dunno why, something about being an interstate claim. Try that. Or give their customer service a call on Monday. That's what I had to do and they told me it was because I had to use Ontario rather than out of Canada or Alberta.

I tried my province the first time and it says it was wrong. then i tried out of canada and it was wrong... i double checked all info and its all right. ahhhhhhh!!! its ok. i guess i'll just have to call them on monday.

Today I received a letter from EI Canada. i got 2 claimant reports dated from april 29 - May 16. what are those? I have no instruction letter. But there's a bunch of questions at the back of the report.

I also have a letter with a benefit statement date and personal access code.

Do they reply this fast? i faxed my copy of visa and i94 card (keep in mind im K3) and i also sent them a copy again a couple days ago (maybe 4 days ago).

at the bottom of the letter, a bunch of stuff about i have direct deposit and reporting electronically, they will stop sending me statements. I want to send my bank # now since I didnt have it at the time of application. Can i still do that? what happens if i send these reports? do they send me a cheque?

I'm worried that if i send my claimant report, i would screw myself later and have to back pay b/c I'm K3 and i dont have my EAD yet but I have I-94 card. I wonder if they sent this to me b/c I have I -94 card.

Jenni & Bo, I agree with JillA. Phone in and ask to talk to Donna. I don't know if she is the boss or not, but she is thoroughly knowledgeable about the K-1 process. Heck, she's the one that told me that all Canada EI wants to see to prove work authorization is the I-94.

Did you send in the I-94?

do K3 get I-94? I got a card stapled on my passport that says CBP I-94A. I sent a copy of that with the copy of my visa. oooh i hope that card gets me EI sooner. lol.

of course its wrong to lie. They thought they had to cancel their whole EI and that's the end of it. I told them, if anything, they can stop the collection and then start their claim again when they get their SSN and have authorization to work as their claim is good for 1 year. They can collect the remaining of the EI. Isnt that how it works? or somewhere along that line

when i went to my consulate interview and medical exam, there were others I met that were already on EI b/c they got laid off. Just wondering........ if they were to continue collecting EI but didnt tell EI that they were moving to US, what would happen? would EI find out you've moved b/c you've notified (lets say) - your medical, no Canadian address, etc?

B/C a couple of years ago... my ex was dismissed from employment, he collected EI. But, he went to work for a cruise ship for 6 months. EI didnt find out about it, and he just made his phone calls and collected direct deposits.

No, because K-3s cannot get work authorization until they get their EAD with their AOS application, as far as I know, and in order for you to get EI you have to apply within 4 weeks of quitting your job in Canada. Even if you apply for AOS the day you arrive in the US, you won't get your EAD for some months, by which you will be long past your window to apply for EI.

Hope that helps clear it up.

K-3s really get the short end of the stick, that's why it's better to do a CR1, from what I understand.

As far as I know, K3 people can still get EI. But the trick would be to apply immediately after crossing the border (in order to get your full amount of weeks), but then you would have to wait until your EAD/Green card is approved before you could start using the 36 weeks.

Granted, the 90 days of immediate EI wouldn't happen with a K3. But at least you should be able to get the EI a few months down the road (when you'll really REALLY need it)

You're correct. I spoke to Donna @ Belleville Office.

She said even if you cant work, you must file right when you enter the states. Your Claim is good for 52 weeks. So even if you have missed 3 months, and once you receive EAD, you can contact them and have your claim looked at. you are still able to collect for remaining 9 months .

However, they would have re-assess your claim and that is when they determine if you are eligible to collect or not.

So i talked to my immediate supervisor that either way i can be rejected to claim EI....and he said he can just lay me off blink.gif that is awfully nice of him but it makes me nervous to claim EI when I am not living in Canada later. I just dont want karma biting me back even when my job really really sucks & i'm not happy anymore and I can quit for just cause (yeah its that bad). My question is, can I collect EI even if I'm quitting for just cause (yes i do have proof of this) or if i'm laid off and then i move to states 1 month after? i dont want to call EI office and ask them this.

I already accepted that the worst possible situation is I dont collect EI, and that's life.. i'll survive but a bonus would be good but not necessary.

sorry for asking weird questions... just checking all options.

So I'm ready to file for Removal of Conditions.... in a couple of years, i'd like to file for naturalization. I read the eligibility to be Naturalized. Kind of a pain in the ####### to pay $600 to remove condition then in a year or 2 file for naturalization. What is the benefit other than trying to remember to renew your 10 yr green card.

Also, with a permanent resident card, can I vote? am I allowed?

My GC expires on 03/12/2012. Since Xmas & buying a new home has made us broke in december, is it too late to file tomorrow since its my payday (woohoo!)? I've been fortunate with my paper work up to this point. my 90 day period was in December 17 when I received the notice. I'm a tad bit worried. However, I have a crapload of financial evidences so I am not worried about evidences... W2, deed of trust, joint accounts... I got it all.

Ideas?

QUOTE (JelloShotGirl @ Mar 6 2009, 12:52 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My husband wants to go back to RP he is getting frustrated here mostly with the culture and stuff. So we are thinking about our options once he gets his 10 year gc or a citizenship here. He doesnt know how long its gonna take the economy here to change for the better and we dont have a lot of income here. We want to try to start a business but I only have an income here, I dont make a lot of money. I get upset that we can't do anything cuz we dont have a lot of $$ even to go on a simple vacation. My husband gets frustrated even when he applies for a simple job I think he gets insulted by how they treat him, even though I tell him not to take it personal. Sorry guys just venting thanks for listening.

You have to tell your husband that he can't give up. My parents moved to Canada for better life. It took us a long time to be financially stable. I know the economy is not doing well right now. but other people are in worse shape. There are others with kids to feed. I suggest taking it one step at a time. I know its cliche but patience is a virtue. when we moved from philippines, i remember we were always involved in a filipino group/community events. It helped with our transition and we learned how to get around the city, what to look for, meet new people, etc. Maybe you could look into something your husband would be interested in being a part of? it would help having some friends to share the tough times with.
