CanadaVisiting the US
the letter from employer should be fine. I always got asked questions about my job. otherwise, i've never been denied and I visit every weekend.

CanadaHow long after interview do you wait to move to US?
I am officially moving in 3 weeks. I am K3 though and live in Vancouver, so I can go back and forth, activate my visa and still work the remaining 2 weeks @ my work. and able to apply for EAD. You have so many options. You should research it and asks others with the same type of visa what they have done.

CanadaShould I stop the process?
US laws will have some getting used to. It definitely made me upset about the loops I have to go through just to get a drivers license. I dont think hating Americans is the problem. I think if your fiancé spends some time in Hawaii that she will learn to love her new home. I wasn't fond of moving at first but I built friendships and I love the people I got to know. Although the fear of starting over will still be there until I can be comfortable in my new home. I think that's why some people are scared because they dont want to leave their comfort zone.

CanadaShould I stop the process?
Question: Where does your spouse live?

another note... I live in Vancouver and there are A LOT of upgrades happening here. I hate it... so many construction and etc. Everyone is waiting for their property prices to increase. Roads are expanding, and the transportation is being constructed and its almost done. i know its a great opportunity for everyone and its personally great employment opportunity for me b/c i work in the events industry. At the same time, everything is on demand. Which means costs for a lot of things will increase. I am the exact opposite... i am looking to get out of here BEFORE the olympics laughing.gif Parts of downtown will be closed for the olympics. Many events have been booked already. There are a lot of competition. Probably, if she doesnt live in vancouver already, she will have a hard time looking to rent a place close to the city that is "affordable". Granted, she's already a live in care giver but if she is waiting for the olympics, wouldnt she have to move? or will she be staying with her current employer?

I suggest doing the pros and cons. That is what I did with my hubby and it really pointed out what is really really important and what is the best solutions.

CanadaShould I stop the process?
Both responses you've received have very good points. My reasons for moving with my hubby seemed like it made sense before and I was willing to make the sacrifice as my hubby is not good with change and I do not mind change. But times and events have come up and I'm very dissappointed my reasons for moving is not the same anymore and what I wanted is not happening. One of the reason also is economy. I am really worried about his job & if there will be more lay offs and what kind of job I'll get and how long will it take me to be unemployed (especially Ill be moving to a small town w/ 2500 ppl only). It is a hard blow to me b/c my income is twice as my hubby's and I have to prepare myself or get used to the idea that I really have to watch and conserve my budget and I have to quit the best job in the world and I may not be doing it ever again. We had to sacrifice a traditional wedding to save more money.

However, these are things I have decided to sacrifice to be with my husband b/c I want to join him and start a life together. You and your spouse have to keep your focus on the reasons why you wanted to join each other and to be strong throughout this process. Let me tell you what... My hubby is very picky about which city/town we will call home. All he could say is.. "oh that city is known for its drugs, blah blah blah".... Every town, city, country has its own problems. If its such a bad location, then no one would live in it. The Immigration process is a difficult road for a lot of people... emotionally and mentally. So, you need to have a talk with your spouse and find out what is really troubling her. I know I always needed to talk about my worries with my hubby and he is soooo sick of talking about immigration and the effects it has laughing.gif Plus your spouse will also feel a huge pinch in the move.. trying to rid of her stuff, closing accounts, not seeing her friends, etc. I always needed a security that no matter what, he is there to support me if I am not going to be happy with the move @ first b/c i will feel alone. So, communication is the key.

CanadaAppropriate time to move stuff....
I dont know too much about moving your stuff other than the officers told me once that i would get in trouble if I was moving pieces of my stuff across the border. But he is american so I dont know if it will be a problem. I have always wondered that.

I just wanted to let you know to bring some proof that you will come back to Canada. Since you are self employed, they may grill you with questions. I do rideshares all the time and I have had passengers who are self employed. For example: I had one of my friend's gf who is fashion designer and she brought her mortgage papers with her and document that she has to come back home for a fashion show and even brought her rsvp and all that stuff for the show. so i dont know if you know that but I just wanted to warn you smile.gif

Canadamy K3 interview review @ vancouver consulate :)
UPDATE ON MY VISA

So I went and got my visa today. yay!!! anyways, i asked a couple of questions.

Apparently you do not have to adjust your status in US for K3. However, you can continue your CR1 process with Montreal. There are some K3'ers who want to stay in Canada (even when K3 has been completed) and wait for the CR1. Or you can stay in US and still continue CR1 in Montreal. The embassy said either way they work out to about the same dollar figure b/c of your flight and hotel. ....... Adjusting your status and filing AOS, EAD, etc is just one way a K3 can obtain their GC. The embassy said if you're not following the CR1 Montreal, you should call NVC or email them and let them know you'll want to cancel that process as that 130 is "pending" and having K3 is also "pending". You will have 2 pending petitions in your record until you have a GC. And NVC will send you notices and reminders if you want to continue with your I130.

I also asked about my name change and you can do this as well but it has to match your passport. So before you change your name on your visa, it has to be the same as your passport as that's the ID they are following.

and they gave me my original birth certificate back also

The consulate said name check is fine as long as all your names are listed on the report so it brings all the background of your history (if you have any). oh and it has to have all the names you have on your passport.

Congratulations! Thanks for the detailed report. You should link it to your signature for others to see. The RCMP item you mentioned..that's mentioned all the time here. If you missed it, I'm sorry.

I never read about it sad.gif i wish i did more research. but I'm good and done now. All I read about is to go to the RCMP @ heather instead of the Police Station. When I went to Police Station, they need a document from Consulate that you need the Police certificate and there was 12 days waiting time for the processing. It is also a finger print check and its about $60 or so. I guess you dont need to worry about the different names w/ Police station. RCMP only charged me $30 and its a name check. Which I didnt know. But at the same time I told RCMP my maiden name and married name and they didnt include my middle name on the police report. I guess you have to tell RCMP how and what you'd like to see on your report laughing.gif

Edit: I love how you remind everyone about their signatures and timelines laughing.gif Its really helpful. I notice it all the time in the forums. I am learning.

Canadamy K3 interview review @ vancouver consulate :)
my appointment today was at 1pm. I arrived at 12:45pm @ 1095 W. Pender Street. I look at the board that shows which floor is the consulate. It says that I have to enter from the Enterance @ 1075 W. Pender street. The doors are on the side of 1075 W. Pender Street.

I presented my appointment letter and they check my name off their list. There were 3 other ppl for K visa appointments. I go through the first security and metal detector check. I had to give them all my documents and present my passport w/ the appointment letter. I had to take my belt off, my pen, and wallet. everything was good and they told me to go up the stairs. I was putting my belt back on before the next door. lol. then the lady on the other side of the door told me to come in. Turns out the check is not over yet. haha. The lady had to clear the security card for me for the elevators and I go up to the 20th floor. Once I got out of the elevator, there is another security and metal detector. So i had to take my belt off again and give the security all my other stuff. The second security guy was kind of grumpy. took everything out of my envelope and left it for me to put it back together. good thing i stapled everything and made sure they werent as easy to tear apart and mix it up (another girl from my medical exam warned me about this as she had to rearrange her papers after going through the security check). Then they let me through the non immigrant visa room.

Once I walk in, there were numbers being called. I didnt know where to get a number ?? I asked one of the girls with the number sheet where she got her number. Of course.. she was mumbling so i had to ask another girl. She happens to be there for her K1 visa. So ... you do not need a number. They will call your name.

THIS IS STEP 1:
Once my name was called, you have to go to counter B. It's just a counter window just like when you get your tickets @ the movie theatre. They will collect all the documents that was listed on your checklist and make sure everything is complete. So I gave them:

* passport
* 2 pictures 2"x2"
* 2 prints of DS 156
* 1 print of DS230
* Sealed medical exam results
* Long form birth certificate
- I was born in Philippines and the guy said he has never seen the form of my birth certificate before. It might be new. He said the ones he has seen is an ugly paper old looking paper. LOL. Mine was printed nicely and clean looking but had complete information. LMAO. I started getting worried.
* 1 orig copy of Police Certificate - NOTE: I received my police certificate from RCMP with my married name. The consulate said they want your police record from ALL your names. You are suppose to tell the RCMP about this. Since RCMP does not do finger print check, you have to tell them other names to give you a full report of your background. The consulate said it should read something like - Jane Do aka Jane Do Johnson aka whatever other name you've used. I didnt know this and I was sh*tting my pants hoping i dont have to get another one - but they accepted my police report at the end. But thought you guys should know as he said it is a common mistake.
* 1 copy of Scotia Bank Receipt - This was one of my biggest boo boo. I thought the other copy was for me. I overlooked the checklist and I HAVE to give them 2 "original" prints NOT copies - but it all works out at the end as they said I can come back and give it to them and they will still process my application.

They will give your folder or envelope your forms are in. They also gave me back my checklist.

So they told us to wait for 30 minutes. Which felt really long and its really warm in the room so it was making me feel tired.

STEP 2:
They call your name up again and you approach Counter A. they take your finger prints and tell you to take a seat. So I wait for about 20 more minutes.

STEP 3: the interview

It didnt even feel like an interview. They have all your files in front of them and they just want to confirm a couple of things.
* How, where and when did we meet
* when did I get engaged
* where and when did I get married
* What does my husband do for living
* What company he works for
* how much he makes - the lady could barely hear me so I just gave her my husband's employment letter which states everything she was asking me.
* What do I do for living
* How much I make
* asked for an evidence for bona fide marriage - I showed her the pictures which she flips through within 10 seconds
* Asked if I have ever been arrested

And finally she tells me that the only thing missing is the one copy of Receipt from Scotia Bank. by this time, its 2:50pm. I volunteered to run home and give her the receipt but they close at 4pm so it was too close to closing time. she said to bring it on Tuesday and she will trade the receipt for my visa. she reminds me that they do not process AOS and EAD and I cannot work when I arrive in US. Otherwise, at the end, I ask her "so I am good to go and approved?". she said yes and to come back on Tuesday at 2pm to pick up my visa. smile.gif yay. then she said to have a seat for a couple more minutes until our name is called.

STEP 4:

Finally, my name was called again and the guy just wanted to repeat everything the lady said and that my police certificate and birth certificate are accepted. He said I just have to promise to bring the original receipt from Scotia Bank and they will print my visa for Tuesday. He kept asking me and making sure that I actually have the receipt. LOL. or else he jokingly said he will make me pay another fee for printing a visa.

so i am basically approved smile.gif

The Vancouver consulate is very casual and friendly. You do not have to dress up. You are not in a small 4 wall room for the interview. You just talk through the glass window. It is warm in the waiting room. It is a small room. They didnt ask me about I-134 which some of you know I was freaking out about the day before. I talked to 2 other K visa applicants and learned a lot about their visa journey. Both girls didnt know about VJ. (i was surprised.lol) One girl hired a lawyer. the other lady did it herself but i felt sad for her b/c somewhere down the line, her spouse and she read that they cannot see each other until the whole visa process is done. so she hasnt seen her fiance in a year. I told them to go to VJ if they need answers or assistance in the future.

I was in at 12:45pm and out at 3:05pm

After college I started working as a server at a hotel in my town to make extra money. About 5 months of waiting tables I was promoted to restaurant supervisor and shortly after that manager, and then I went on to be the assistant to the events planner. You'd think that would be great right? Wrong.

I know what you mean. I work for an Events production company. We would take care of the technical part of the event - ie: lights, sounds, video, stages, decor, furniture, fabrics. So there were no weekends for me. I got tired of it after 1 year and demanded I take more responsibilities in the office versus on site. I hated site work and all the events always happens from Thursday - Sunday then I was back in the office on Monday no matter what since I was first contact @ the office. We handled all types of events from fashion shows, festivals, to corporate events to weddings to high school dances and even movie sets.

But, now I love my job since I demanded for what I wanted and got it. I've been in the industry for 5 years and 3 with the company i'm currently with - and leaving next weekend. *cry* I basically took care of everything in the company and have done all the positions - I currently take care of all equipment rentals, sales, repairs, shipping, cross rentals for events. I've done staff recruitment and schedules, webpage and e-newsletter maintenance, and all of the administration part of the company. Lets just say when I started @ the company. it was male dominated and I asked for the policies and procedures book and the 2 guys there didnt know what that was. laughing.gif

So for anyone having a wedding or parties and you need input in your lighting (and sound and decor), you are welcome to ask me any questions. I'm very knowledgeable in many equipment and I'm able to send you all the info via web. lol. I just love this and dont want anything back. I just know I probably wont get to do it where I'm going.

Wow it sounds like most of you moved to wherever the money was good. I definitely didnt move for the money just like Bermycat. I made 3 times as much as my husband and LOVED what I do and knew I would never work in that industry again based on my location sad.gif I moved b/c my hubby is from a small town. he said he probably would not get used to being in cities plus he has a child that he's been battling to be close to. so, before we even discussed it, there was no way I was would have him move to another country as it would be harder for him to be close to his son. I am open to change and would be able to blend in. Plus I can't take him away from the ocean. He's 3 generation of surfers. He is totally willing to move to Canada, but I told him I dont want him living in Canada if I knew he could never be completely happy @ heart. A big piece of him would be missing and it would change the person I fell in love with. I made a decision to move 8 months after we were married. I had to really think about it and I needed an awesome reason before I moved and gave up my awesome job. Of course, it took many arguments and discussing pros and cons. But we peeled all the onion layers and see the whole truth. Hopefully the OP gets to do the same

theres a 2nd vehicle following me. they will have some of my stuff as well. lol. does it matter which vehicle I'll be in? should I be in the Van where its packed with 90% of my stuff or can I be in the other car with 20% of my stuff? Will the other driver need a copy of my visa or anything else?

Sorry to just jump in here...

You mentioned that you plan to use the vehicle to import all of your goods, while also importing the vehicle, yes?

I was under the impression you couldn't do this... If I'm mistaken, I'd be happy to know as I was looking into doing this myself.

I'm not importing it as yet. so we'll see what happens. It is now under my name and i have a 3 month insurance on it. so until i'm close to the end of my insurance, I wont import it as yet. However, I will be using it to move my personal belongings.

All i know about this is if I import the vehicle w/ my stuff, i have to be cautious and make sure there will be no problems or else I have to turn back around(?) However, where Im going, its only 5 hours away from BC and I'll be crossing all the time. So hopefully they dont give me a hard time with the van. It has EPA sticker on it. I will inquire @ the border this Friday when I move tho.

LMAO ROFL. Yeah my hubby calls me lead foot. it took me 2 suspensions to quit it. But then again, I'm N and been driving on it for the last 5 years. And when I got my N, a new law passed and of course, I had to restart my 2 year every time i got a ticket. My brother got a ticket for not having his N magnet displaying and had his license suspended too. yeah. crackin down pretty bad.

I always wondered how the hell people in Washington drive w/ license plates and license when they are suspended. My hubby cant explain it cuz he just doesnt know any other way and I asked too many questions. But he got caught driving w/o insurance so yeah.... I was totally shocked when he told me that and told him its not ok to do that. of course b/c ICBC was the only driver's system i knew. I told him how it works with us and that its impossible to drive w/o insurance in BC. Now I know why. YOu've been really helpful texanadian.

I asked him why he gave me a ticket when I wasnt speeding and demanded for him to show proof. His answer is classic "my speed reader is in my vehicle but you are not allowed to approach my vehicle" and replied "how convenient for you". And he kept my BCID just cuz i grabbed my ticket and license from him and drove off. But the ticket cost less than my 1 day's time of work plus its out of BC's jurisdiction so it wasnt worth disputing.

Hahahaha, you're complaining about ICBC? The most I ever paid with them was $700/year for car insurance. All my friends that moved to Alberta were shocked when they were handed bills for $2000-3000 a year for Alberta car insurance. Many of them chose to keep their ICBC insurance and risk it instead.

HOw is that possible? 2k-3k insurance in Alberta? wth! I was just talking to my coworker who's from Alberta and didnt insure his vehicle in BC b/c he had to pay 3k a year and was shocked. He only had to pay $600/year in Alberta and he took advantage of that as long as he could. You must have had a roadstar or at least have been driving over 10 years. My father has a 50% discount and he has to pay $120/month which is half of what I pay since I only have 20% discount. And we have the most simplest and safest plan. $700/year w/ ICBC??? which office did you go cuz i want to go there.

I am planning to go to Geico. At first they told me I need to register my car in Washington. Then I told them I dont have to and disagreed a couple times. And then she finally agreed but said I had to change my license to WA within 30 days of insuring with Geico or else they cancel my plan which is the same thing as wowswift said.

i think i have found a way around most of the above. good news today that my husband's long awaited tax return has arrived and have paid all of the things that were outstanding. Money makes the world go around baby!

At this point, I really dont care anymore about these crazy car rules. I am over the frustration and going with the flow. all that's really painful is paying $300 for 1 month of insurance in BC b/c I need to insure the vehicle so I can transfer and drive it to Washington. Versus paying $300 for 6 month worth of insurance in US. laughing.gif Oh dont you just love Insurance Corporation owned by Province.

This immigration has taken me in a crazy journey. I just never know what I am going to freak out about and all turns out ok at the end. At least I come out with more knowledge and options.

As for the 30 days to get my Washington license -it is only based on when I establish residence. So I guess until I get my SSN, I cant establish my residence. There is a loop hole. ha!

I don't think you need to register the car to find out whether it's importable; your dad or whoever the owner is could get the letter of compliance now if you wanted. You just need the VIN (and that's on the title and on the car.)

But if you're just borrowing the car, you don't need to do all that, because you're not importing the car or planning to. It might not be a bad idea to have a letter from your dad handy that explain you're borrowing the car to move down and you'll definitely want to check the insurance information. (Just like you would if you were renting a car.)

yeah I talked to my father about that. And if i remember correctly I have to make up a story for my father about where he is moving to and etc as they asked for that info when I called the manufacturer. They said they cant tell me on the phone even if I give them the VIN number

Canadaa unique situation: importing vehicle
Well I just talked to ICBC, my insurance company, Geico in US and DMV in US. Basically I'm F'ed up in some many ways and the easiest way for me is to buy a car in US.

1. My Father's name is on the title for the van. So i cant even get the compliance letter. And my father and I dont want to go through the whole hassle of transfering names on a van

2. Since ICBC is not a private insurance company & owned by gov't ( and BC has the worst and most expensive insurance system in Canada). For me to cancel my insurance, I have to surrender my license plates and register the vehicle in the US to get US insurance.

3. I need my husband in my insurance as it has something to do with property law or something or other to do with marriage and blah blah blah (as the insurance company in US said). If I dont have him under my insurance now, then he will be excluded in my insurance forever for any vehicle I get in the future unless I go with another insurance company that is willing to include him on my insurance. But if i exclude him (let's say with Geico) then I cannot get another Geico insurance with my husband. It would be up to an Auditor to determine if I can put him back or not. (#######?!)

4. My husband's license is suspended and has to pay his remaining balance from his tickets $600 (no its not dui or anything crazy-something super stupid & careless), to get a valid WA driver's license and have to do the whole testing again. He would need to get his license within 20 days of when I sign up for my insurance and 30 days for me to convert my BC license to WA license.

5. I talked to the DMV - they said i need a Social Security # for me to get a drivers license and If i dont have one - then I have to sign this declaration form and that can result in a felony (#######?! x 2). And since I am K3, it would be more than 30 days for me to get my EAD approved and get my SSN.... but hey DMV says i have 30 days to convert my license to Washington?

ok.... at this point, i am so speechless, full of ####### info. So frustrated... i should take this to the Vent Thread. I'm just going to take the bus that takes every freakin 45 mins to come around. girlwerewolf2xn.gif

another question. If i dont transfer the registration under my name by the time I use the Van to move my stuff, my father is worried that the van is not under my name & the border wont let me through as I am just borrowing it for the time being. will I have any problems at the border b/c of this?

If you don't transfer the title right away, you shouldn't have problems entering the US.

The only problem may be with insurance. You'll have to ask your dad to contact his insurance company about the vehicle being in the US.

I am only borrowing it for 1 week or maybe a couple of days then visiting canada again. So the insurance shouldnt be a problem as his insurance says other drivers are covered under his insurance and he is the primary driver using it 51% of the time.

this is great info. I was about to give up with this vehicle and thinking it was going to be an additional moving headache. Who knew it would be a huge benefit to me. good.gif thanks wowswift and mrscat. im gonna get on this. lol

Well I googled if this car model had any recalls and it has 3 that I know of. the model is on the NHTSA list but it says 1996 (not 1995). But thanks for all the info Mrscat smile.gif I think I will just register it under my name and drive it for a while. it sure beats paying any car payments.

Amen to that! good.gif

My POE was Blaine, which it seems that your's will be too. biggrin.gif

I bet they don't even ask to see the paper work again either.

Yes, actually it is Blaine. lol. i always cross the pacific truck crossing b/c they are nicer compared to the peace arch and some of the officers already know my face. lol

I do talk to an operator. They all say the same thing. CALL BACK IN 2-4 WEEKS. I could walk the file to NH faster than that.

LOL. like wise with my packet 3. I couldve picked it up from my consulate. my work is less than 10 mins from them.

I always ignore the "call back in 2-4 weeks". I ask different questions all the time. haha. even stuff i already read from VJ. its like confirming the info on VJ is correct. I never ask them about time frames. i know i'll get the same answer as you're getting so i rephrase my questions. haha

I think i am driving myself crazy with the whole process. I cant bring myself to go out, have fun and not think about it. it doesnt help that my friends always ask me hows the visa process. ahhhhhh

I hope I can bypass AP since I waited 8.5 months for them to even look at it.

No, they are just giving you a template answer headbonk.gif
Call them again tomorrow smile.gif

I wonder why my case isn't even scanned and Sarita's is already on the way to the embassy......
BTW... Congrats Sarita !!!

I hope to god they did all the checking before they approved us !!

I would say call over and over again. the Automated message is so back logged just talk to an operator.

But i called my embassy today as NVC said they have forwarded my K3 case already to vancouver consulate on march 3. Vancouver consulate said they sent me packet 3 in the mail on March 5 but its already march 10 unsure.gif so ummm... im getting worried my packet 3 got lost(??????)
