CanadaDinner Dress - Ladies which one would you choose?
QUOTE (Misty1979 @ May 20 2009, 02:26 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Number 5 just looks like one of those kinds of dresses that no matter how skinny you are, once you put that thing on, you're destined to look fat.

exactly what i was thinking. I think #5 is the prettiest dinner dress out of all but once you put it on, it might not be how it is on the pictures. that's why i think #6 would be the best one, its casual but b/c its long, it can be dressy. Pair it up with the right tall heels and accessories and you'll be golden.

CanadaAdvantages of dual citizenship usa/canada
As for getting Canadian Medical (this is fact is based from BC Medical). Even though you're a canadian citizen, you're not able to get medical benefits if you live in US - because you're no longer a resident. If you return & live in Canada, there is a 6 month waiting period before you can have medical benefits. (i dont know why-its just the rules).

but yes, I found out about this after I canceled my medical and when I was finally approved for a small surgical procedure, the surgery date was after the date of my coverage - even if my inquiry was long before I canceled my medical. BC Medical will not "un-cancel" or extend the date of your medical coverage even if I still have an active home address in Canada or still work in Canada. bottom line was, I don't live in Canada so they told me to walk. - i finally found something I hate about canadian medical. lol.

I'm Canadian and I immigrated here to the USA 16 years ago and get that problem all the time...be proud of who you are and how you do things and how you say things and your accent...DO NOT CHANGE IT. You may have to change the way you spell stuff when ur at work or something but dont do it just to please anyone or make yourself BLEND in. I like being known as "the Canadian" even though i am now a US-Citizen...I always say that I am a "PAPER YANK" and always a CANADIAN. I am now immigrating my British fiance and I tell him the same things....be proud of who you are and how you sound and how you do things on EVERY LEVEL.....btw.. I travell ONLY on my Canadian passport and just use the Yankie passport for getting home!! So I hope thats good advice for you...

From someone who's been there...and back again,

I agree with you! I refuse to say Lever like Never. lol. And i am going to continue to say "about" with "oooo".

I wish we actually have a distinctive accent so I dont have to keep defending Canadian words. lol

CanadaThe joys and differences between US/CAN spelling...
I knew there were different words for runners so I called them sneakers when I got here. I thought it was a neutral word that everyone should know. But i hear my friends say tennis shoes more than any other word.

Yesterday, my Husband & MIL were arguing about how to say Lever b/c i used it in a sentence and they said that's the wrong way to pronounce it. I said it like rhyming with "fever". They said what the F is "leeeeeever???". lol. they said it like rhyming w/ Never. haha. it was a pretty immature argument. But they sounded like they were really really really convinced that the Canadian/British pronunciation is wrong and doesnt exist. So i was starting to doubt myself and looked it up online. thank god i was not crazy & told them they should just accept that I am from another country and Canadians have different accent & words & we say "eh" just like how Australians have "mate" as their distinctive "thing". lol

Regarding accents, I never thought I had a detectable Canadian accent either, but I've been stopped several times by Americans who ask me "You're from Canada, right?" I'm told it's the "out and about" that gives it away. I don't discern it myself, but clearly people can pick it out of my speech even years after I've left Canada.
Here's a discussion of the whole out and about thing...
http://www.antimoon....um/2002/252.htm

THAT is a biggie! I know a lot of Canadians don't think they have accents, but we do!! One American I met said it had something to do with "a's" like we soften them in certain words. As we were taking I said the word "about"...(didn't realize it of course) and he said "there it is!!" A lot of times when I meet Americans, and they find out I'm from Canada, they always ask.."oh...do you say 'aboot'?" That is actually how they hear it. I had no idea. Took me a long time to see it was true. I really like to listen to American words now, and detect the difference. Course with Tim it's hard..he has a southern accent!! laughing.gif

Another word too, if it's ever come up is garage. Maybe not all Canadian pronounce it the same way I do, but it also was a great conversation...and I've been asked how I pronounce that one too.

I dont know why but its always irritated me when americans already know im canadian and when i say about... and they hear it as "aboot", they get excited and say "OMG THERE IT IS!!"... seriously?!

i've asked my husband and in laws and they cant tell or they just dont catch it???

CanadaEnhanced Drivers Licence - Rant
I dont know yet. i havent converted my license yet as I havent gotten my SSN. Im waiting for USCIS to get that goin on. lol. But, when I talked to someone at DMV, they said I had to do the written and driving test. but when I looked at their website, it states that I would have to do the driving test if I had a medical condition. So when its time for me to convert my license, I will print the webpage and bring it to the office.

Carla-we went there on Friday morning. but the other applicants said they went there 2-3 times already and its the same waiting period. Some ppl have arrived & lined up before the office opens. If you are the first one then you are good to go. I think one of them said its a 3 hour process b/c of the interview that's why there is such a long waiting period.

another note: make sure you bring ID's that matches your names. example, if you were divorced but kept your married name. You will need your divorce papers, birth cert, and current license or WA ID. And you need a utility bill or mortgage bill that shows your proof of residence.

Skip the EDL and get a passport!!!!We live in Washington State. the closest DMV office that processed the EDL was 1hr & 15 min away from us. So when we got there at 9:30am & 50 people were waiting. We get a number and we are number 854 EDL applicants. But we look up & it was only 815! We talked to someone else that was waiting and he said he was there before 8am and there were already ppl ahead of him. he was number 823. We ended up leaving at 11am and they only processed THREE PEOPLE. (#818). so i finally convinced the people I came with to leave and just get their passport. Of course they are outraged and kept ranting about what they were going to write on the complaint letter. I dont have a problem with this b/c i dont need it. lol. But they have a good point... its pretty dumb to have only TWO picket windows open that processed a 2 part method (application & interview). Its pretty big & important. It is a security ID for crossing a border. Especially there is an influx of people who are needing this card & they didnt have anyone in rotation to cover lunch breaks & they had 3 more windows that were not open. The office was taking care of FOUR counties & some who drove over an hour to get there. I ended up calling the EDL hotline and offices who are taking appointments only & it said their earliest available time is August 10th.

Well, thought some of you will find this info useful and pass it to your friends and/or family that will be applying for the EDL.

You won't be approved on the spot. That doesn't happen for any immigrant documents outside of an interview. They are saying EADs run about 90 days for processing. Some run shorter, some run longer. I know when I got my EADs (although this was several years ago) I generally got them about a month after the biometrics. Good luck.

If you are close enough to a USCIS office I would actually make an infopass appointment and go in person to speak to an immigration officer. It may even be possible for them to send you for biometrics at the same time ('may' be possible - no guarantees). You should have had something by now, yes. You can make an appointment online at http://www.uscis.gov . On the right hand side you will see a column with options - select Schedule an Appointment and then follow the instructions. Good luck.

ok i tried the infopass appointment but the only option it gives me for EAD is to book an appointment only if it has been over 90 days since hearing from USCIS. Its only been about 60 days since my NOA1 so I guess I will wait it out. Hopefully my situation is like Levi's. Im just worried b/c I havent received anything about biometrics appointment. And when I called USCIS about a biometrics appointment, the email I have copy & pasted was their response. The agent on the phone says I will hear from them within 30 days and its almost 30 days. You would think they will give you enough time to be advised of your appointment. My 90 days will be the first week of August.

CanadaQuestion to Canucks about EAD?
so its been almost 2 months that I havent heard anything about biometrics. I have already put a call to USCIS in California telling them that I still do not have an interview for biometrics or havent heard about my EAD. A week later they sent me this:

The status of this service request is:

Your I-765 application is currently under review. Notification will be sent by mail when a decision has been made or if further evidence is requested regarding the case.

The status of the case, processing dates, addresses and necessary information can be found on line at: www.USCIS.gov. Under ?Help With?. Enter receipt number i.e. WAC at Check Case Status. Applicant can also sign up to be notified of any changes occurring with this petition/application.

If you have any further questions, please call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283.

Please remember: By law, every person who is not a U.S. citizen and who is over the age of 14 must submit Form AR-11 AND notify this office of their change of address, within 10 days from when they move (persons in "A" or "G" nonimmigrant status are exempt from this requirement). To notify this office of a move, visit our website at: www.uscis.gov or call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283. The Form AR-11 can be downloaded from our website or you can call the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283 and we can order one for you. Instructions for filing the Form AR-11, including mailing instructions, are included on the Form.

I want to follow up on this but I know USCIS is useless and will give me the a paper read answer. VJ timeline suggestion says I should call them on Monday.

Any thoughts?

but i called California service centre and i talked to an agent. She put a request for biometrics appointment for me b/c i shouldve had one 3 wks - 1 month after receiving my NOA. however, she couldnt give me a timeframe of when I was going to get a notice. double bummer. she said they are back logged w/ cases. so who knows. i wish i just adjusted my status right away. i live and i learn.

I checked the VJ timeline. most of the service centers are Chicago and mine is California. they are being approved faster in most cases than mine.

the California processing times on USCIS is 3 months. So I still have 2 more months max to go. But based on VJ timeline, everyone is getting their biometrics interview 3 weeks after they received their NOA. (but then again, most people's I-765 was submitted with adjustment). that's not my case.

QUOTE (TimandJoyce @ Jun 7 2009, 03:25 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hoping someone will come by with an answer for me.....

Taken from my instructions on the check list for the Consulate

"EVIDENCE OF SUPPORT: K1 and K3 applicants are subjects to INA 212(a)(4) and must demonstrate to the consulate
officer’s satisfaction that they will not become a public charge. Applicants may submit a letter from the petitioner’s
employer or evidence that they will be self-supporting. The Form I-134, Affidavit of Support, may be required when the consular officer deems it useful."

Ok...the self supporting issue. I'm confused. I have a house to sell, and I don't have a mortgage, so my pocket change is going to be pretty healthy. And obviously, I won't be spending it all in a month!! I was planing on bringing evidence that I own my home, and what it's worth, and that I'm selling it.

Just curious as to whether or not that would be accepted. I'll have the 1-134, and all Tim's information, (his assets, etc.) But it did state that form MAY be required. Feeling like Alice in wonderland here...."curiouser, and curiouser...."

At the interview, they will ask you where tim works, how much he makes, any assets?.... i freaked out about this too b/c i didnt have I134 as it wasnt on the checklist but i brought as much evidences from my husband that we are over the poverty line (ie. pay stubs, letter from employer) and that was sufficient for them. So if you have money in the bank, then that's a bonus.

the reason they ask you this and want to make sure that you're over the poverty line (and may request I134) is to make sure that you're eligible to be approved for I-864 ... that's what the lady from consulate told me.

I have done some serious research on doing a combined household income (I'm not asking the Embassy..they are a very confused bunch in my opinion) and I have printed off instructions that state I can do that for the I-864. Since the I-134 is just to ensure you will be eligible to do the I-864 I'm confident that this will work.

I asked them if I-864 is ok to bring it instead of I-134 (since I-134 was not in my checklist 2 months ago & it was too late for me to get my husband to send me a signed 1 at that point). They said they want the I-134. BUT it is not mandatory to bring. they will request it if they need more evidence regarding your spouse's income. they only accept I 134.

but you should not need it. the interviewer will only ask you what your spouse is making, where he works, etc. In this case, I produced a letter of employment my husband gave me and that's all they needed.

Hey guys! I am waiting for my Packet 3 to arrive and received my VAC case# through NVC a few days ago. I was lurking around trying to find out requirements for packet 3 and stumbled upon instructions to download Packet 3 if you have received a letter from the Vancouver embassy.

http://vancouver.usc...document=fiance

What I was also suprised to see when I clicked on Packet 3 on the website was that the latest Revision date was 3/30/09! 2 days ago!

So just a heads up for anyone going through Vancouver consulate! I know there were a few from the January CSC filers thread! Look forward to hearing about your progress!!

I am still in the US visiting my fiance until Monday so I think I will wait until next week to send the checklist back by fax, I want to see if I can get a new passport first.

Can I send the checklist back by fax even if I haven't received a hardcopy letter from VAC that my petition has been received?

its better if you send Vanc Consulate an email and make sure that packet 3 is on your way and that your petition is not in transit anymore from NVC to VAC. dont fax the checklist too early. make sure you actually get started on what's on the checklist first. (ie. pay the $131 & get the receipt, fill out DS160, and i believe there's more forms if you're doing K1) Book your medical exam first as they book 2 weeks in advance and only do it on wednesdays. You will need a letter from packet 3 when you go to your medical exam. so when you ask for an interview date, make sure its after the medical exam or i think some applicants can do their medical exam and interview on the same day but that's just a lot of running around imo.

and o yeah... it took a day for me to get an interview after i faxed the checklist. I just emailed them if they got my fax and if i was already booked for an interview and they told me i was!

here's a tip for clogged drains. I used to work for a Plumbing Distribution company and the Plumbers told me not to use Drano. It shouldnt be accesible to the public. it does more damage than help you. So they told me to use Vinegar smile.gif

You can also use vinegar to soak stubborn stained fabrics. I usually let the fabric soak for a while and I also use Vinegar as a safe bleach for laundry. I used to do this for work all the time. If you ever get gum on the fabric, steam the part that has gum on it, then it will get soft again.

As for keeping your closet smelling good, i put bounce or any laundry sheets that smells fresh. My brother and I do this for my car too.

CanadaDid you feel safer in Canada or in the U.S.?
hmmm. i work in a law firm that deals with family and criminal cases. and i dont think i want to know how many sex offenders are close to my area. I've looked over cases and some of them makes my stomach turn.

However, i live in a small fishing & surfing town. Since there's not a lot to do, there's a lot of drunks and def a drug problem. But We leave our cars unlocked and our houses are unlocked. lol. funny how that works.
In canada, we have to lock our doors. our house was broken into and no one was home but my little sister who locked herself in our bedroom & hid in the closet while she called 911. i guess, since then we've been very cautious.

There is definitely more media exposure about drugs and violence that I see on tv while living in US compared to Canada. But then again, every city has its own problem. I guess I feel safer in US b/c I learned how to handle a firearm out here & physical defense and if I was faced with danger, i can kick some @$$ if need be. LOL.

CanadaName changes in Canada and US
Thanks for the answers.

Yeah I think changing it at naturalization would be inexpensive and best way for me.

I was just concerned about filing my taxes and other legal documents required wont match. For example, my bank and electricity bill has First and married last name only. but any state and government identifications have to have what's on my K3 visa. So right now, my Drivers license, Social security card, and I just registered my canadian car in Washington and that has my long name too. My husband thinks its kind of weird I have such a long name and it didnt really bother me before until I started applying for my State ID's and stuff.

So lets say i change my name for my 10 yr GC - will it be easy to change my name on my Social Security record then? or do I have to go through legal court? It only confuses me b/c I am already married and using my married name. Like trailmix says, I am dropping a name and I might have to get the court involved. if that's the case, i guess I'll just keep all the names. Would it be a problem if (lets say) I apply for a credit card, and I only choose to put my preferred name and not my legal name? what do you guys think?

CanadaName changes in Canada and US
I have a dilemma. not sure how to go about it.

My name reads: first name, middle name, my last name then husband's last name (not hyphenated)
I want it to read: first name, last name as middle name, husband's last name as my only last name

the consulate rep said its easier if i change my name when I renew my passport or when I i go through naturalization.

But, I'm not sure if its better if I change it now since I'm currently using my first name and husband's last name for bank records, electricity bill, employment, and everything else. But, my US drivers license and Social Security Card already has my super long legal name on it. I dont know if this is going to create problems when I file my taxes or whatever else comes up.

As for canadian ID's, my passport and Canada Revenue has my super long name. I know I have to update my passport before I change anything else.

What is the best route to take? has anyone every been through this?
