United Kingdomwhat would u ask relatives to bring from the UK
QUOTE (chloe @ Sep 27 2007, 01:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Luckily I have Taste of Britain 6 miles away, so we are always stocked with Paxo, Branston pickle, Piccalili,
and loads of Galaxy, Cadburys etc. Last time I went they had 10c bags of mini Cadburys buttons on the counter..yum
In 2 weeks my pop is visiting and Ive requested Weetabix ($5.00 for 12 in local shop!!) and I need to find out if he can bring Smoked Mackerel on the plane...
does anybody know whether that will be allowed through?
It will be a bit warm, but oh how I miss it!!!!

The only smoked fish Ive found here is Smoked Catfish....doesnt really appeal..

x

Not a Mackerel fan myself, but I do like smoked fish! You should be able to find smoked fish in Atlanta somewhere.
I really like smoked trout or smoked salmon.
But other fishes are good too. Smoked Rock fish.. yummy
Great with crackers and a little cream cheese!

Try a good fish market. Perhaps a farmers market......

United KingdomQuestion for those who have gone through London
QUOTE (thejoz @ Oct 6 2007, 02:22 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I have been discussing my case with a guy on another board I visit (not an Immigration one) and he talked about how because people in the UK are vaccinated against Tuberculosis, that during the medical exams, even if a chest x-ray or whatever comes up negative, the US can 'force' you to take 3 months worth of a drug called Isonaizid, which according to his nurse of a wife, has a good chance of screwing up one's liver.

So, I need to know, did this happen to you or not? Were you vaccinated against TB, and then when you tried to get in the US, were you told you had to take such drugs?

He said he didn't actually take the drugs, because he clearly doesn't have TB. Apparently, and not all too surprising, the US is dumb and stuff.

Please advise as to what you went through regarding this matter. Thanks.

The only way you would need the TB treatment is if you came up positive for TB.
Just curious, have you done much research on your visa and what it required for it?

My partner's interview is on the 22nd of next month *squee* and he wants to go have a drink afterwards (he's already a bundle of nerves). Can someone recommend a good pub nearby to the consulate?

Let me ask my husband but I am pretty sure there are a few near by.
Okay just asked he said plenty of pubs not sure which are good but there are plenty.
Good luck. It was a breeze for us.

I miss a real curry n chips cray5ol.gif

I had a real curry and chips last week. Not to rub it in or anything.

Really though Lisa, at The World Market, they sell jarred curries. Typically I am against most jarred sauces because I love making homemade. But these curries are fantastic. They have a butter chicken sauce, Tika, a lemon and coconut...and they all are so good. We can even get Naan bread that is decent enough.

There are a few that are higher fat and calories but for the most part they are really reasonable.

I totally recomend them for any one missing a curry.

I can't help you with the chips guys. Haven't been able to do those yet. However the steak fries come close when we make fish and chips.

The one thing I really miss is sausage. When we were visiting my inlaws last week I got to eat them a few different times! Yummo.

United KingdomSo glad I found this forum...
Good morning and welcome to this forum.
This website has been fantastic for us during this process.

I must confess that for us the whole thing was a lot easier then I expected. Yes it seemed to take a long time but in the long run it was really cut and dry. I'd say be prepared, do the research, and use the infomation given here to help you through. But when getting advice from the members here remember that all cases are different.

When you are actually together and the whole thing is some what behind you, you will look back (hopefully) and feel it was all worth it. Both my husband and I agree that the time spent away has really brought us closer. Also it gives you time to wrap your mind around leaving your country. After all, you aren't moving to another village or town.
Have your SO spend as much time with loved ones as well and as most of us will agree...eat your fav foods as much as you can! *giggle*

Good luck and continued success!

United KingdomSunday Roast
We like to do Cornish Game Hens. They are a little bit different then chicken. Taste the same just a little different then a typical roast bird. If you have big eaters do one bird per...personally half is plenty for me. I find them fairly inexpensive but I normally have a smaller group...

We did them for Chris' parents last week when they were visitng from the UK. They loved them.
Roasted them with an apricot and mustard glaze then did a gravy from the drippings. Oh my gosh it was fantastic. The gravy was just amazing. Really savory, not sweet really at all.

LOVE roasted 'nips like Mags. Really into roasting veggies at the moment.
If you get a nice peice of beef (I used lamb) cut potatos( dress with the tiniest bit of oil) and place the roast on top of it and cook as normal it is fantastic. I always add a bit of rosemary which pairs well with lamb. Then you can add aspargus(sp) about 10 minutes or less before it is finished. YUM.

Crock Pots are fantastic things for crowds. They have all sorts of up dated recipes for them now. I did a lasagna in it a few weeks back. Turned out very good. Also a Chicken and dumplings was a hit with my brit-n-laws.
Just add a side salad with either.

You could do a beef stew in the crock out and then make british style pancakes. That is always a meal that we eat when I visit my in-laws!

I am sure there is a traditional recipe thread. We've had a few in the past. I know I either started on or contributed quite a bit....

United KingdomWedding Reception Back in the UK
My husbands family had an engagement party for us in England a few months before the wedding. He has a huge family and a lot of family friends and most would not be able to attend a wedding in the states. They rented a hall and catered it and everything. Was lovely.

We were lucky that about 20 people from his family flew over to the wedding but it was still very nice for us to celebrate with everyone else!
Have fun and good luck for the future!

United KingdomYoung Brits Can't Boil Eggs
well, I cook all the time and I don't know how to boil an egg. (well I do now )
I don't eat eggs. They are one of two (regular)foods that do not pass these lips.
However I cook with them and cook them for my husband often, still I've never boiled eggs before.

I know how to cook bacon and sausages properly though! yes.gif
