IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresI-864 - document straight from hell

The I-864 has been giving me a lot of trouble due to some challenges in getting transcripts from the IRS. I have, however received a fax copy and I am wondering if I could use a fax copy with the cover page as proof of salary? Any ideas?

Don't know if this will help you but I had a difficult time getting my transcripts as well and ended up using Accuverify. They got them for me in 24 hours.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresAffidavit of Support

3) My joint sponsor, my grandfather, has sufficient income from his retirement as well as bank savings and ownership of a house. Technically, we wouldn't really need the bank assets or home ownership to meet the poverty guidelines; however, we want to provide that information as extra just in case. We can easily obtain a bank statement. But how do we go about assessing the value of his home? I've used a free home appraisal website online. It seems reliable since property in that area has sold for the amount listed on the website. Can I write a letter listing the high estimate and the low estimate for the house according to the website? (Of course, I'll provide the deed to the house and whatnot.) (Do I really have to go through the process of having his house appraised?!)

Hi, We are DCF too and on the instructions included in our initial packet, they list two ways to set value on real estate. Appraisal or a valuation by a reputable real estate company or agent. I opted for the second as appraisals are very pricey. I contacted a real estate agent in the area where our condo is and asked for a letter stating the value at the current market price. They sent me what they call "An Opinion of Value" letter at no charge even though I offered to pay for it. On letterhead & signed.

I had a brief time with the Territorial Army.. (a few months), and I was wondering how to answer question 24 on the DS230.. (Previous Military Service) I am presuming that I need to declare it..

My question is will I require a discharge certificate at the interview ?.. I was never issued a discharge certificate becuase I never completed training.

I have a info sheet that I was sent from the Army Personnel office stating my enlistment / Discharge date..

Not sure about your case, but my husband was in the RAF (he didn't have a discharge certificate either) and what the Consulate accepted was a signed letter from the RAF Personnel office stating his dates of enlistment/discharge.

Yes sounds the same, I have a signed letter from the Army personnel office stating, Enlisted date, Discharge date and rank.. along with reason for discharge..

 Yep, sounds like the same thing, I forgot it also said the reason for discharge.

Maybe this is an obvious question.. but... when would a person tell their post or NVC that they were ready for an interview? I was under the impression that you get an interview, pretty much, whenever they schedule one. When would a person need to use this form?

thanks...

You send the DS-2001 to tell your Consulate, etc. that you have all the required documents to support your application for a visa and that you are ready for an interview, then an interview is scheduled for you and the interview letter is mailed to you. To get a general idea of how it works, look how it works in London:

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedureshow to get your tax returns

I tried the following sequence and it worked for me:

1-800-829-1040 => 2 => 2 => SSN => 1 => 1 => 4 => Address => 4 => Year => 1 => 1 => 2 => Year

And so on. This is an automated system. So it will send you the transcripts to the address that the IRS system has. If someone wants them in a different address, then this option is not going to work. In that case, speaking with a live person will do it.

I apologize for bumping this, but since it's important information I thought it would be okay.

This was the method that worked for me, as simple_male posted. When I tried it the original poster's way, Option #3 also gave me Business Accounts. It would not let me request transcripts for years I didn't file my taxes, as someone else posted. It really was a simple process to order the transcripts, after I knew which numbers to press. I was just thankful I didn't have to speak to a human  It does take a while because the automated voice rambles on, but so far this has been the least painful part of this whole process.

Thank you VisaJourney!

Obviously this is much easier from inside the US. I began trying to get mine in early March. Have called, faxed, had my daughter try the automated, etc etc etc, see previous posts. Upshot: Still waiting. Posted Image

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedureshow to get your tax returns

yikes, how annoying and frustrating! We keep getting a lot of run around and bad help from the people "running things" in the philippines too. :( The US stuff seems pretty easy. I'm glad you've finally got a handle on the tax stuff, though. :) If you don't mind my asking, what was the hard part about your bank letter from BOA? Was it that you had to do it remotely (guessing they don't have branches there)? I had no trouble with my bank... I went there and had it printed by the dude in a matter of minutes, though he had to manually add my deposits for the past year. Hope the guy you talked to follow through properly and your transcripts arrive shortly! ttyl,

mich

No BOA branches here. Basically it was the same type of runaround as I got from IRS. Some of the customer service reps didn't know what I was talking about. See my post #176165 about it. I finally got it but it wasn't easy and it should be and maybe it is because I am outside the US that it is so difficult, I don't know. What is so annoying about the tax transcripts ordeal is waiting all those weeks for it only to get a letter that says my info doesn't match theirs and then when I call the number they gave me,their stupid message box is full. Now, we wait again. I'm thinking of trying the Accuverify just as a backup. Posted Image

Can you also request these transcripts be delivered to a different address?

You can have it emailed to you. I used accuverify.

It would be a good option, if someone needs them within 2-3 days. But when you call IRS and speak with a live person, you can have the live person fax them to you, provided that you are in front of the fax machine in order to verify the fax delivery. Otherwise, it takes about 5-10 days to get them by mail.

I am in New Zealand and I started calling IRS at 1-800-829-1040 in March trying to get transcripts. System disconnected me twice (at international rates) by the time I got to #4 Transcripts option and would not let me use the automated system or talk to a live person. Message said they were overloaded, to call back & then a disconnect. So I mailed the request form. Two days ago I got a letter from IRS telling me my SSN number did not match their records & gave me a different phone number to call between 8am-2pm ET. That is between 12midnight & 6am NZ time. I got up at 5:30 yesterday morning to call them. Dialed & got the message-leave your name & phone number and we will call you. Then the message: Sorry the mailbox is full, call back later, goodbye. So then I called the 1-800-829-1040 and GOT THROUGH to a live person. She put me on hold and never came back, after telling me my address was wrong in their system and that no one would email or fax transcripts to me from IRS. So, I called back and got through again to a very nice guy who promised he wouldn't hang up on me and promised he is sending the transcripts. It took IRS 6 weeks to send me a letter saying my # did not match their records, which is crazy as the # is correct and I had sent in a change of address in 2004, paid my taxes from here for 2004 & 2005 and got a refund both years. Two most difficult things to get for me have been the bank letter from BOA and the transcripts from the IRS. Posted Image

Call 1-800-829-1040
Press 3 for automated services
Enter your SSN
Press 1 to confirm it's an SSN
Press 1 to confirm the SSN is correct
Press 4 to order transcripts (or copies)
Enter your street address (for example, if you live at 123 Main Street, enter 123)
Press 4 to get an account transcript and return transcript (nothing more for them to request and it's free anyways ;) )
Enter the tax year you want to request
Press 1 to confirm the year (eg, 2005)
Press 1 to confirm the (free) order (eg, trasncript of account and return for 2005)
Press 2 to request another, and go back to the year line above or
Press 3 to end the call.

So for two years of returns (and btw, you can also make multiple requests for the same year in the same call):

Posted Image Ok, so I decided I was willing to try it one more time and see what happened. This time I called at 5:30pm NZ time which is 1:30am EDT in the US so I knew that IRS would be closed and if I ever could access the Automated System it would be now. I dialed 1-800-829-1040 and the message said the offices were closed, yata yata yata and then gave me three choices, #3 was Automated and then I got all the way to #4 Transcripts. When I pushed 4 for transcripts, I got the message that the office was currently closed, please call during regular office hours, thank you for calling and disconnect. What I think is happening is that the system recognizes from my SSN that I live out of the country and therefore need to talk to a live person as the system is probably not set up for foreign addresses. I would be interested in hearing if anyone else tried to use the automated service from outside the US. :P

When filing the affadavit of support, do they accept transcripts, or does it have to be the full copy?

As far as I have been able to find out, transcripts are accepted and some posts say they are preferred over the IRS copies of the full return. Good news as they are free. Posted Image

Is it possible to get all 3 years worth of tax returns ?

From what I read, it is. Are you wanting an exact copy of your tax returns? If so, it costs $39 per tax year. If you want the "transcripts", they are free. The form for those is IRS 4506-T and it allows you to request four different tax years at the same time. You can mail it or fax it in or if you are in the US you can use the phone number detailed above.

When I called 1-800-829-1040 the first set of options gave #3 as Business Accounts not Automated Services. I tried it twice (at International Rates) because at first I thought I misdialed. Didn't. So, could you doublecheck this sequence please? Thanks.

Verified today, just now (sorry about the delay!). The topics I get at the main menu are as follows:
1 - recorded tax topics
2 - questions about you refund
3 - all other automated services

I wonder if you're getting a different menu from an international number. That's not very helpful for us if that's what's happening here. :(

Dunno  That may be the case, because #1 is Recorded Tax Topics, #2 is Individual Accounts & #3 is Business Accounts.
I called twice using the info posted here and both times got a message that they were overloaded and then telling me to call back, then a disconnect. I also asked my daughter in the States to try it, she got the same thing. She got all the way to "Press 4 to order transcripts" and then got the same message I did and the disconnect. So I ended up faxing my request in. 1-800 numbers can be called from out of the US but you have to pay for them, they aren't free. Just a heads up for others out of the US.

This is in the current I-864 instructions (USCIS website form):

25. Federal Income Tax Information
....."If you provide a photocopy of your tax return(s) you must include a copy of each and every Form W-2 and Form 1099 that relates to your return(s). Do not include copies of these Forms if you provide an IRS transcript of your return(s) rather than a photocopy"

see: http://www.uscis.gov...files/I-864.pdf

The way I am reading it, according to the new I-864 Form instructions if you provide photocopies of your return you must have the W-2s & 1099s. It you use the tax transcript from IRS you don't want them.

With regards to the police reports - I know I need one for Australia as I lived there for a year. Ive got the forms now but has anyone any idea how long it takes to recieve your report once youve sent them down under?

Hi James,
We ordered an Australia police certificate for my husband on January 23rd and it came on February 20th. You need the one with fingerprints for Australia.
You can check out Bulgaria at: http://www.travel.st.../B/Bulgaria.htm You can see that police reports from Bulgaria are not available.
Also, on the sheet that was included in my husband's initial packet of forms, Bulgaria is on the list of countries that say: "Do not attempt to obtain police certificates covering residence in any of the following countries, as they are not available." There are a lot of countries listed under unavailable. Then there are some countries where the certificates are only available if the person is physically present in the country and applies in person. Same with Military Records, a bunch of countries that you cannot get military records from.
Welcome to the Board & good luck! :)

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresAbout to start the process...

Hello, everyone! I'm new here, and I'm needing some guidance before my Canadian fiancé and I start the process of getting the K-1 visa...

Réjean has not filed his taxes for the past 5 years or so, and the government found out about it and is demanding payment. If we go after the visa while this is unresolved, will he end up getting denied because of it? Both of us live on our own, and it is going to take him a long time to get this all paid off. What we were hoping we could do is go through the process of getting the visa for him, getting married, getting the EAD, etc., and then once he gets a job here, we can both get it taken care of.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Am I reading this correctly that you are saying the Canadian fiance has not filed taxes for five years and the Canadian government is demanding payment?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHow can you request a copy of tax return for k1 visa?

Ok So my fiance is gathering the documents to send me for I-134 and my interview, and as of last week he can't find his tax return. Has anyone else had experience like this? Where can he go to get another one or a copy of it? Now I'm worried that if I dont have this at the interview it's going to be a problem. Is there a government website you can request to get a copy of it? How long does it take to get one?
Thanks for any advice.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresGot our visa!

Congratulations!
My POE was Atlanta, and I arrived one month ago, so I’m giving you a few details about all the procedure there. He has to fill the I94 and the custom form, and bring the sealed brown envelope. No need for X-ray (mine was inside one of my checked luggage). Go to the visitor’s line, handle them the brown envelope and passport, answer a few questions and have his finger prints taken. Then his passport and I94 will be stamped. This procedure took about 20 minutes on the line, and 5 minutes with the officer. Then they will put the brown envelope in a green folder, and give it back to him. He has to go to the baggage claim area, pick up his luggage go through customs with the customs form and show them the brown envelope, at this point they will tell him to give the brown envelope to another officer . The officer will go through the papers, make a few questions and stamp the I94. It took me about 15 minutes.

Simonne

Hi Simonne,
Can you tell me what custom form you are talking about here? Is there one given out on the plane? I am trying to find out what custom form you need to fill out if you are bringing household items in suitcases as excess baggage on the plane with you. I know about the one (#3299) for unaccompanied articles but don't know if that is the one I need or not. Thanks for any help. :)

I will take a guess.....all arrests are reported to the FBI. The FBI will be the source of this info, not you local PD. The FBI only supplies this info to other law enforcement agencies.

You can order your own FBI record. I've done it twice for NZ Immigration. So have countless others. Directions are on the FBI website. :P
