CanadaBest Way To Move Money To US?

I am no where close to this step, but I opened an RBC account with an RBC US account.  They are two separate accounts which are linked.  The US account is administrated in the state of Georgia and the account is an American account.  I simply transfer funds from one account to another, and the money is transferred instantly.  I have also linked a Wells Fargo account to the RBC US account.

I would not withdraw all your money and carry it (regardless of the amount).  It's just too risky, ie..theft, loss.  You can only carry $10000 across the border legally also.

I know others have posted that the TD Bank also has US banking available.  I would try those options.  I know for me, the RBC has worked wonders so far, and that is how I am going to move my money.  I can also receive Canada Pension and EI through RBC and transfer funds as I need them.

Just an FYI, RBC and Wells Fargo play nice together.  :)

CanadaPaying fees with TD account?

Does TD allow you to link your US TD account to your husband's US bank?  My husband opened a joint account for us at Wells Fargo, which I linked up (online) to my RBC US account.  I can transfer money from my CDN to my US account at RBC, then transfer that money from US RBC to Wells Fargo (I would guess TD would allow this also..), so that when the bills are invoiced, I can pay them through a US bank, no questions asked.  Online banking is pretty efficient across the borders, I have found, once you figure out the process (most websites are easy to navigate).

Hope this helps a little!  :)

CanadaHow to bring CDN$ accounts to US

Yeppers..still have to notify the IRS..You wil not get taxed on them..ur just notifying the IRS.....and I believe you have to contact the institution in Canada that is looking after them and tell them ur no longer a resident of Canada.   I recall them sending me paperwork to fill out.

I see, just so they are aware of POTENTIAL tax dollars...lol.  It's all good.  I just want to make sure that I do everything I am supposed to do.  Don't ever want to piss off the IRS :)

I am using RBC as well.  I have several RRSPs and a pension, as well as CPP (eventually) that will need to be deposited into a Canadian account.  Very easy to move money through RBC Can to RBC US.  I have linked our Wells Fargo account with the RBC US one for this purpose.

hmmm, I am just wondering, but, it seems that the husbands have an aversion to filling out the forms, mine included .  We were married in July and still haven't got our I-130 submitted yet  :o   Thursday night we will be completing the forms via phone call.  My portion is complete, so it's his portion of the forms we will be completing.........

I am very anxious to get this ball rolling so that I can be with my husband!!  Then, I get overwhelmed by everything that I once knew that had to be done but know I have forgotten because so much time has elapsed.  Oy!!

I hear ya!  My husband is on the road for his job ALL the time, so I forgive him.  It was sort of understood that I would do the paperwork.  He provides the funds, so I can't complain too much.  He even bought me a new laptop to do all the work on.

I made list after list after list.  I read nearly every guide that could possibly pertain to me, and then I started gathering documents.  Do NOT be shy about asking the folks here on VJ for advise.  There is a world of knowledge and experience here!  As overwhelming as this process can be, the guides and forums on here, and the folks just like us going through the process have made it a whole lot easier.  I don't know how far along in the process I would be if I hadn't stumbled into this community :star: !

Thanks everyone! Got everything done on the weekend, scanned the photos today, and my docs all go out this evening. Then the waiting game begins and I'm off to the NVC thread.

Thanks again guys!

I did the same thing.   :)  My husband delayed our AOS submittal by a week because he wouldn't get his butt to the IRS office.  Told me that I should have told him that he needed to get these docs.  I did, in Oct, in Dec, in Jan, in Feb... LOL  /shrugs!

Lol!!!  I totally get you!   I have done everything up to this point...except the payments, he did that.

OR he can fill everything out on his end, print it, sign it, scan it and email that.  THEN he needs to mail you the original because you MUST take it with you to interview.

I emailed the one I filled out to him.  He will go over it, print and sign it, and then scan and email it back to me.  I can get the original from him in a couple of weeks, and put it with the rest of the docs.  He's still stuck out in Dickinson working so I hope he can get back to Fargo sometime tomorrow.  That is literally the only thing I am waiting for now.  I have organized these docs to death, lol!  :)

She is saying that you should print them, scan them, and send the scanned versions instead just in case they cannot open the original pdf.

Thanks again,  That is precisely what I will do!  :D

Heya! Just wanted to make sure you know you have to scan the whole form because it's security protected when you first download it. But yeah, have your husband just print the page he needs to sign on his end then scan it back in, then scan every other page and put it together in a new PDF. My husband and I did EP and had no problems at all while using online resources to compress our PDFs. Make sure your package is 5MB or less!

Another thing that's protected are the tax transcripts from the IRS website, so if you just downloaded and saved them you either need to find a way to remove the security or print them out and rescan them also.

Hi Mandi

I downloaded it a long time ago, I forget where from, but I am still able to change and correct things on it with no problem.  And yes, I know about those IRS transcripts.  Those only open with Adobe Reader.  We downloaded them and just saved them to a reduced size PDF.  So are you saying they may not be openable at NVC?

Thanks Ian, that is what I was hoping to hear.  Yes, Canada has the option to either use EP or snail mail.  I am doing EP for fear of lost originals.  I will just take my originals to the interview.  :)

Okay.  So I am doing the last minute go-over before these docs get emailed to NVC.  I have been doing ALL of the filling out of forms, etc. as the husband is constantly on the road.  Anyhoo...I get to the I-864EZ.  I downloaded this and filled it out with all the husband's IRS info...everything is good to go.  Then I get to the signature line, it's BLANK!  Hmm, so can he sign it using Acrobat, or do I have to print out this bad boy to have him sign it with a pen, and then re-scan it (please tell me I don't have to do this...I will cry :( ).  I am such a goober, I thought I had it all sewn up.

Ah well, the DS-260 will be released this week and THAT will surely keep me out of the bars for a night or two (just joking...but seriously, having lived in a zillion places in my life is NOT doing me any favours here!).

So please, those of you who have done this before, impart your wisdom upon me.  Can we get away with an Adobe siggy, or do I have to do the print and re-scan (which will put us a week or two out, cuz I'm a goober  ).  My free trial of Acrobat is ticking down...

Thanks in advance!

CanadaNVC Thread for Canadians

Hi All,
I just had my medical in Montreal. They were great. It took about 1.5 hours. Doctor first, then the nurse to weigh and measure, draw blood and give the flue shot and then the chest ex-ray. It was not crowded but there were quite a few people and a steady stream of people all the time.
We drove from Ottawa and left home at 10:30 am for a 1pm appointment. We were there in lots of time. We parked right under the building for $17. We were back in Ottawa by 5:40pm.

NOTE: as of now you need 5 (five) 2X2 pictures for the medical. Probably because they now are doing the flu shot. There is a pharmacy just down the street that can do extra's if you need. After I was done and had paid we went and got the picture and returned to the office and she added it to my file.

Holy guacamole!  5 photos now.  By the time I get to that phase they will want 8 or 10...geez!  I am gonna be on a first name basis with the CAA lady pretty soon!  I have a premium membership with them so I get passport photos for free (they do them for many different countries :) ).

Thanks for the info!  I plan on having my medical done there a few days before my interview.  I will have my flu shot at work though, as they give it to us for free.

Remember you can separate out all the documents as much as you need to keep the attachments smaller.  And also I think it's 5mb per attachment not per email.   Just make sure it's not being saved to an online drive (like google drive) vs being actually sent.

Also it's best to use a full PDF maker which can reduce the size of the document (like adobe for instance).

Yes, that's exactly what I did.  Thank God for Adobe Acrobat's free trial!!  I reduced and reduced those files...  I am a dinosaur, so they scanned 309 pages of my military records at the National Archives in Ottawa, and put them on a CD.  It was originally 44,700kb.  I managed to get it down to 11 MB, in six parts.  NVC should have fun with that, lol!

Hi again Dualie,

You are right. Sorry to make you already more paranoid than the rest of us at this crazy process. I was looking at Saylin's notes, the gal who has a wiki for canadian spouses at the IR1 forum site. And she has it there. But it looks like she is wrong. Anyways my wife sent our IV documents on Oct 12. We didn't get any confirmation from our email yet and I guess the next correspondence will be a checklist or case complete. Praying for the latter. The operators don't tell you anything either. I don't think they could make this process more maddening :protest:

That's okay!  Saylin is not wrong so much as she is a busy gal and NVC is changing.  She is probably monitoring all this to tweak her wiki when she is convinced that the changes are a steady process.

I haven't received anything yet either, but I am guessing we will be waiting at the very least a week for them to acknowledge receiving them.  Their email volume is rather high, I am sure.  And I have only ever called NVC once, and had I waited an extra day, I would have received what I was looking for in an email.  I won't bother calling them unless I have to.  Praying for no checklist!!

Good luck and hang tight.  You should hear something soon!  :)

Hi Dualie,

I see we are close to the same timeline. And you posted to my topic about CDN dollars so thanks for that. I hate to possibly be the bearer of bad news but I think your email package has to be less than 5MB in order for it to be accepted at NVC. I hope I am wrong but thats what is says at the NVC website and according to Saylins info. Maybe it is OK if you send multiple emails, But I hope I am wrong. I would double check this because to wait another 60 days for a checklist is ridiculous. Anyways good luck.

boarder

Hi boardercrosser!  Thanks for the reply.  The way I read it in the information provided on the NVC site was that each attachment had to be under 5MB.   http://travel.state...._documents.html

I have so much documentation (old school military docs) that a complete file of only 5MB is totally unrealistic.  If that is the case, I will have to contact them and snail mail it in.  I couldn't reduce it any further without completely butchering it.  Oh well, I guess I will see soon enough.  I just want this to be over already!

:joy:    Just submitted all my docs...one email, multiple attachments adding up to about 14MB.  I had to fine tune it down from 30 because Outlook wouldn't send anything over 24MB.   Been at it for nearly four hours after working a 12 hour shift.  If I had wine, I would celebrate with a glass...and probably fall asleep halfway through it  .  I am over tired now, so I better go to bed before I digress...lol!   Goodnight everyone!

hello all i have a quick question people do not seem to be able to answer so far. for montreal interviews it use to be go early line up hope and wait but i have heard a few things that they are not letting people in early anymore? and you must be within the hour before your interview time? is this correct now very nervous and trying to plan around as my interview is oct 23rd. thank you in advance.

Hi Raven!  I have been brushing up on the reviews portion of this site lately and that seems to be what is happening lately.  I have read a few now where people have arrived around an hour before their appointment time and there has hardly been a line at all.  I also read one where the person got there at 6:30 and was sent away and told to come 1 hour before the appointment time.

It sounds to me as though they are wanting to avoid the "first thing in the morning line up" crunch, so they are enforcing the appointment times.  It makes sense to me...why bother with appointments when you allow a rush grab at the very first appointments.   I really thing they are trying to make things more efficient.  JMO :)

So, just to document this EP journey of mine...I just logged in on the CEAC site and the IV fee is up for payment.  This process is going more quickly than I thought it would so far, but I do realize that the real wait comes AFTER I send all the AOS and IV docs in.  I FINALLY managed to reduce the size of my military records (took the advice of one of you kind folks and downloaded the trial version of Acrobat XI Pro - it's driving me nuts with the pop up asking me if I want to buy it, but it's a small price to pay to use it for a month, as I likely won't need it again any time soon  :) ).   Just waiting for the hubby to contact me so we can pay this bad boy and get the wait on for the DS-260 :joy: :joy:

So...I am new here, finally got through to NVC and was told that they received our case last Wednesday, September 10th, but it hasn't been entered into the system yet. Now from what I have been reading here, it could take upwards of 30 days from that date for them to assign a case number. Is this about right?

Things have been all over the place lately in this process and I am just trying to get a feel for how long I have left to finish up my docs and get the cash into the appropriate accounts.

Thanks! :)

My parents call 10-10-925 and then whatever the number is when they make long distance calls on their cell phones. It's 5 cents a minute. My husband's phone plan includes unlimited North American minutes, so we don't worry about it.

I didn't find that it took too long to get the e-mail with my case number. I was approved on July 7th, and got the email of August 11th. I called on July 28th and they had just received it that day and told me to wait 30 business days. We were on vacation when we got the e-mail.

Thanks!  I'm on vacation now so I'm not even in visa mode right now.  It's a nice change of pace for the brain.  I'll pick up where I left off when I get back to Canada...and work...and real life... :clock:

I used gmail on my computer.  It has a google voice feature (not available on phones anymore) and was completely free.

Thanks NLR!  I will try that.  I am always connected to a network, and "free" is a good thing.. :)

So....I guess I am here now. Got my NOA2 on August 15th, and because of the doom and gloom I had been reading about the ever increasing wait times, I have decided not to melt my phone calling NVC for a case#...yet.

I do have a simple question for my fellow Canucks regarding communication with NVC. I am seeing that NVC's PREFERRED method of communication is email, but of course it is because they take two months to answer it...lol. So it is suggested to call, call, call. Now, I don't have a landline, I have a cell phone as my connection to the world. Hubby and I use Facebook Messenger to call each other, as it's free. We all know that won't work with NVC. I have read where people have been kept on hold for the better parts of an hour or more before speaking to a person, so my question is...do any of you know of a cheap way of contacting NVC by cellphone? I have been looking, but a lot of the apps I have looked into are not very stable. Please tell me what works for you?

Thanks in advance!

30 business days is really 45 days. Thought we could be the lucky ones that got thru NVC in 22 days HAHAHAHAHA silly me

Hopefully you do get there before Thanksgiving. I COULD happen. Glass half full, well there is room for more wine :joy:

Wine?  Karebear said WINE!!!!!  Even if I don't make it until February some time, wine is good!   Wine can be spiced and mulled to keep me warm this winter.  It gets dang cold in Winnipeg, lol!  There's always room for more wine! :joy:   (see what you started?? )

Here when I started this process NVC was a short pit stop before the interview. Now who knows when they will get stuff done.

I SO get what you're saying.  Even once we get to NVC we wait forever for them to assign a case #, etc.  Well, I have pushed my timeline ahead to March 2015 now, and if I get to the US sooner, then yay me!  It just screws up any hope of holidays with the family because I have to save what time off I have left for the medical and interview, blah blah...

I am looking forward to being a regular on this forum soon though...glass half full :)

CanadaToday's Ottawa Attacks

I work along side military veterans (a veteran myself) and veteran police officers at my job.  We feel not only the shock and sadness at this terrorist attack on an honorable soldier, but also anger...a lot of anger.  Terrorism is cowardice.  This is how we feel.  We did a lot of talking today.  How do you fight an enemy who will recruit the weaker, the mentally ill, the young impressionable members of your population through the social media.  We liken it to gang problems in big cities, only on a much larger and more dangerous scale.  Our anger is borne of frustration of the unfairness of it all.  The praying on the young and impressionable, and the outright slaughter of innocents by cowards who won't even show their faces in the name of a religion.

I won't go any further, I just wanted to share a little of what is being discussed at our workplace.  I work at a large college.  The fear factor is elevated.  We strongly believe that this has changed Canada.  The blame is not with the Prime Minister, or other politicians.  The blame lies solely with the cowards who are perpetrating these heinous acts, and we, as Canadians, cannot let them use fear to cripple us.

I am going to cross the US border tomorrow, and I hope that things go smoothly like they always do, but if they don't, it won't be a bad thing.  I truly expect tighter security on both sides.  If that's what it takes to keep us safe, go to it guys...please.

Thanks for listening everyone.  This really bothers me and my partners at work.  We have lost a brother and it pisses us off.  Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

CanadaToday's Ottawa Attacks

I hope it doesn't cause enhanced security for us, but I don't think it will.  I think they may go a little deeper in some cases, but every case is different and in the long run, we are all just normal people who want to join our spouses in the US.

Everything here in Winnipeg seems to be okay.  The RCMP have said on the news that there are enhanced security protocols in place at the airport and at government buildings, but they don't ever say what they are.  Also the military has issued a warning to military members to avoid wearing their uniforms in public while off duty.  The base here is at Level 5 security, so they are checking every car that enters the base.  Needless to say I don't take that shortcut anymore for now.

More than anything, Canadians should have more situational awareness.  Be aware of your surrounding and who is around you.  Too many people have their heads down, buried in their electronic world while navigating the real one.
