Wow, 4 years. That's seriously depressing. I couldn't even move to Thailand cuz they don't let westerners live there for more than a few months. Can't work there either. ugh

andrew va thuy - I didn't realize K3's took that long. Ouch!

GREEN/TRAN - I'd hire that lawyer if it were me... and just do the next thing required each day. Hang in there.

If you need to scan and send email have her get familiar with a stop to the internet cafe sometimes. We do that. I'm lucky Lek speaks English and can decode a little written English if need be.

I wish my wife has access or understand how to use a computer. She has never use a computer before. And, she lives in a country that relies on the World Bank donations. So, the only way to communicate is by phone.

Can she do fax? Are there internet cafe's in Phnom Pen?

For the IRS you are required to have them done until April but I don't know about her SS card and ITIN. But, the CO may want to see current evidence and better safe than sorry, I figure. You may not have time to get that IRS tax report/statement back to you form but you can have a copy of the 1040 you sent in to give as evidence.

Congrats and good luck!

Asia: East and PacificLurker's review

they are too "long winded" and don't get to the point.

That's how Vietnamese talks!!!! Confusing sometimes: (5 mins interview)
CO: Don't you know your US fiancé have two wives?
VN: Yes, I don't know he has two wives. He told me his wives are dead long time ago when He married me. But he still lives with his mother-in-law to save money and receiving welfare assistance. OOPS, cross the last part!
CO: You have your Vietnamese birth certificate translated to English, don't you?
VN: No, I have my English and Vietnamese birth certificate but they are not in the envelop which I carry with me in my purse and the taxi was waiting outside my house to bring me to this interview. Do you want my pictures and phone bills?
CO: (handing blue/green slip) Go home and bring me your English birth certificate and we'll see what we can do.
VN: No, me want pink slip now. You want to see my fiancé? He's in the next room. (crying)
CO: Good day.

Lesson: Yes is YES, No is NO in English. Unlike Vietnamese, Yes = VANG/DA following a NEGATIVE.

Good luck with the correction. Vietnamese women are taught and trained to be proper with their words and responses to authority figures (Father/Mother/Older siblings/Husband/Uncles/Aunts) by saying: VANG/DA before they respond to a question/request. Thinking: Yes - VANG/DA is not uncommon to them. Just need to tell your honey: YES is YES, and NO is NO in English! I hope we may avoid a lot of confusion and unnecessary delay in the future.

LOL, that must be a SE Asian thing. My buddy and I see that sometimes and have a laugh. Hard for polite Thais to be direct too. I bet CO is a hard job in many ways. Presiding over heartache day-in & day-out...

Asia: East and PacificLurker's review
There is a tradition where you show the future wife's family how much you will pay to marry their daughter. It's very offensive from a westerner's perspective, but is not as cold than it looks at first glance. The idea is to show that you can care for their daughter and to show appreciation for raising a good daughter up. They usually give all the money back after the ceremony, minus the expense of the wedding.

There is a whole family to family negotiation that is to take place first, which we wont be doing. Then an amount is agreed on and put on display at the ceremony. It's like most things in Thailand, it's sweeter and more innocent than it sounds. But still, it has a hard edge of sexism, etc.
For example, a younger lady who has not been married and has a college degree generally has a bigger sinsot than a divorced lady with a child -who may not get any sinsot. I don't get it at all, but I guess I don't have to get it... just go with the flow.

It's a Buddhist religious ceremony only. I told Lek about the 'guest book signing' idea. She assumed I meant to sign the official book at the Amphur (County Courthouse). Oops! I had to explain that we do NOT want an official wedding, just a Buddhist ceremony for family tradition. Whew!

Asia: East and PacificLurker's review

e. The consulate knows Vietnamese cultures and traditions. We got married without registering our marriage. We did this because it is traditional. I cannot take her away from her father without doing so. I referred to her as my wife, and her as her husband. She wore a wedding ring. We had 300+ people at our wedding with signs galore "Happy Wedding" in the tieng Viet in the background of our pictures. We presented our guest list. They expect this. They know Vietnamese culture and traditions. I sometimes think we look too far into this ####### that we actually alter what is traditional for the sake of thinking they are ignorant to it. If for some reason you are not traditional and/or you have lost your traditions you may have a more difficult time convincing them of your relationship as I think they would question about this.

We are going to do this. I think it'll be great, can't wait. Her mom sounds great and I want to meet her anyway, but we have to travel 13 hours to the country to their farm. There is a money show that is very strange to my western mind, but I can accept the traditional ways for her family. I never thought to have a guest book to present at interview. Thanks!

We won't register it either, just a religious ceremony for tradition/family/face.

Asia: East and PacificHow on earth?
Many send their US bank's ATM card to their fiance in Thailand. After she gets it they call and he gives her the PIN#.
So that account is charged a small fee and the ATM charges a small fee. But Washington Mutual Bank gold card ATM is international fee free.

;) No fees are good fees!

Crushing. Man I just don't know...
Maybe marry there and go for an I-134. I know I'd move to Thailand if it came to that but educating my son would be a hassle. And his mom might decide to get maternal at that late date too, who knows.

Asia: East and PacificPoint Of Entry

Things are not simple as we thought. To get visa is only the first difficult step. Next is the trip to USA.

In my trip, there are 4 Vietnamese wives went to USA. When we arrived Seattle, David went through the US citizen gate and he came back to wait for me. So, everything is ok for us, except the waiting time is too long.

The rest 3 Vietnamese wives, they went there by themselves. One had her husband came to the airport to pick her up and he entered into the place of Custom officer to wait for her, she passed through that gate as well. But the other 2 ladies were kept and they had to follow the custom officer to go to some where else, I don't know.

There is one Cambodian girl, she came by K1 visa, but her husband is 62 years while she is only around 25 years. The custom officer asked her with a very upset voice: Do you know who you are going to get married to?? He's 62 years old!!!
Then some other questions very difficult and they kept her as well.

It is up to the city, Seattle used to have some organizations for the fake marriage. That's why they are very difficult.

So, be careful with the current situation of each area and the best method is your husband / fiance go with you to USA.

Hien

Thanks for the good info Hien, maybe Lek should enter in San Francisco. I would like marriage in San Francisco but we should probably marry in my home state, Washington. I don't know, I haven't got that far yet.

Asia: East and PacificNationality Question

I am a naturalized US Citizen. My country of birth is Thailand, and I am a descendent of a Cambodian.

I have a permanent, no expiration visa to Cambodia. What about Thailand? Would I be able to enter Thailand just like a national through the borders? Of course, I know that my US passport will permit me to enter through the borders without any VISA for 30 day stay. However, I would like to know in regards to this unique circumstance. I'm sure others may have question about this.

You may find specific answers at www.thaivisa.com/forum/ if nobody here has the answer.

Hope this helps.
