PhilippinesGetting married in Vegas

Our wedding is fast approaching.. I am pretty sure most of the girls in VJ are experiencing the same feeling I have this very moment. It's sad that my immediate family couldn't make it to our wedding but with the support of my fiance's family everything is going well so far. Thanks to the technology now a days, my family can watch our wedding LIVE through online streaming. Due to some constraints - Seattle being far from Vegas, lack of time, etc.. - only the 4 of us (Fiance and Me, his mom and dad) will be attending the wedding. I find it weird that only two people are attending considering the kind of wedding traditions we Filipinos have where the least number of guests are usually around 50 -100.. but oh well what more can I expect? We are only given 90 days to prepare... My fiance assured me that we will have another wedding in the Philippines once I get my papers. Guess, I'll have to freeze my wedding fantasies for now. <img src="http://www.visajourn...R#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

So guys... care to share how your weddings were like? (to those who arrived in the US through Fiance Visa and were married here) How did it went considering the limited amount of time? How about the guests? What were the traditions you practiced? aside from Something New, SOmething old, Something borrowed and something blue.

Thanks guys.

First, congratulations for your upcoming wedding day! I hope you two are very happy together. I had a civil wedding in the Philippines. My wife and I agreed we needed to be married before entering the States. We also didn't have enough financial resources for a church wedding. Now that we have been in the U.S., we have saved quite a bit for an appropriate church ceremony. I know it's not the perfect fantasy wedding, but it suited us well in our situation then.

I have seen some church weddings in the Philippines. And there's one practice that involves candles and a rope that binds both of your hands together. I'm not really sure what it's called, or if it's exclusively Filipino. But I though that was nice. :)

PhilippinesAs Temporary I-551

Hi Guys,

I just have a quick question here...

As I was looking at my passport the other day, I have noticed this message under my visa photo that says; "UPON ENDORSEMENT SERVES AS TEMPORARY I-155 EVIDENCING PERMANENT RECIDENCE FOR 1 YEAR".

Huh?!Posted Image I'm a little bit confuse, coz my GC is valid for 2 years and the IO officer at my POE stamped the 2 years permanent recidence in my passport. Am I misunderstanding something here?Posted Image

Any reply would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

The I-551 stamp is proof of your permanent residence. It is issued while your green card is being made. The stamp is valid for one year.
When you receive your conditional permanent residence green card, however, is valid for two years.

Philippinestravel agency website

i used bookingbuddy.com it goes through all the other sites...sometimes its better through that site. I used asaptickets.com last time. You will need to call or e-mail them as the price listed on the search is WITHOUT taxes...but they were the cheapest way last time.

Prices on Expedia include ALL flight taxes and fees.
However, they DO NOT include baggage fees that various airlines charge.

PhilippinesFurnitures Online Store in Philippines
You have a great idea in mind! Unfortunately, the Philippines isn't updated in terms of online shopping, IMO. The biggest malls, like Mall of Asia, SM, Rustans...do not really advertise their merchandise for online purchase.
It is unfortunate, but that's the way it is in the Philippines.

You may want to try eBay or Sulit if you want to purchase online.
I have seen eBuy advertise furniture. However, I cannot vouch for the company, as I have not personally ordered from them.

Anyway, I hope this helps some. Good luck on your purchase! Again, it's a great idea for your parents.

PhilippinesGUAM POE

Has anyone been to Guam? please give me reminders and how to save money as well while staying in Guam. Anyone who knows a hotel to stay and that is affordable wherein I can stay. Thank you

Hi there! I'm not too versed with all the hotels on Guam, as it's been years since I was there (~2000). Basically, anything hotel on Tumon's "Hotel Row" is pretty expensive. So, I would avoid them if you're on a budget.

I've heard that Days Inn is pretty affordable...$77-87 per night. They also have complimentary shuttle to-from airport. They have two different locations, both being ~2 miles from airport.

For dining, shopping and entertainment...I'd recommend Guam Premier Outlet. It would be near the Days Inn, Tamuning location.

Tips to save money on Guam are pretty common sense. Try and avoid most of the tourist spots. Most of the expensive stores, restaurants, etc is found in Tumon. Stick with the premium outlet and even Micronesia mall. If you're wanting to eat Chamorro cuisine, eat out. Avoid hotel dining. Yes, it's fine dining, but it usually is triple the cost. Most places in Guam malls have all the local favorites, as well as Filipino and American dishes.

Take care and enjoy the Guam sun! B-)

Philippinesfor the guys!! How do YOU deal with Tampo?

Just wondering how the men here deal with their wife when the dreaded tampo hits!!!!! I know it doesn't last for longer than 2 hours in my case but what do you do to try to fix it ?

Hahaha. The infamous "tampo"-trums?
My wife usually responds to cuddling. It sounds strange, but you'd be surprised how fast women mellow out after cuddling.

PhilippinesBack Seat Drivers

Living in Los Angeles, I'm used to road rage, being cut off, given the bird, you name it, and I myself drive like a bat-out-of hell, but when I went to Manila, my Wife and I were in the back of a Taxi and the guy was talking to us as he was driving but head turn around, and at the same time, motorocycles weaving in and around us, and I'm like praying my #### off wanting him to turn around :o . I think I almost soiled my pants. I thought people in L.A. drove crazy and I could stomach any traffic situation. I can tell my wife is petrified in the passenger seat and does say something about my speed sometimes.

Hahaha! So true!
I know people drive crazy in the Philippines...I remember when I was a kid. But coming from the States and driving in the Philippines myself? Damn! Some crazy stuff.

If you can drive in the Philippines (and not get into an accident), you can drive anywhere in the world!
You really need fast reactions and a heightened sense of awareness.

Philippineshotel manila

does anyone can give me some info. an affordable hotel near in the airport, please

It depends on what you mean by affordable and near.
Manila Airport Hotel runs ~$60USD per night and is probably the closest to NAIA.

I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

PhilippinesAdam Carrolla bashes Manny Pacquaio & Philipines
Typical moron directing racist comments to a charismatic, successful athlete and the country he represents.

It is one thing to insult an individual. But to extend that ignorance and narrow-mindedness to an entire nation is simply pathetic.
I am pleased that Pacquiao did not even comment on Carolla's podcast or apology.
Pacquiao need not justify his religious beliefs, refusal of blood tests, or his political ambitions.

PhilippinesMedical today at St Luke's

I just spoke with her again, she said there's just a sea of people.. The guard made an announcement about having an original copy of the invitation letter.. We didn't receive that and I hope they won't send her back home..

I told her to just provide them with the MNL case # and tell them that they never sent us a copy.. Here's hoping it goes smooth..

BTW - Rebtel rocks, very clear and easy to use. I just call a local number and it routes me to her phone.. Wow, ayuz!

Hope everything goes well with her medical! I'm sure she'll be fine.
Yeah, I've seen the sea of people there on a Monday morning. Not fun.

+1 on the Rebtel advice. My wife tried it last night and she's hooked. So much for our local international carrier...Qwest.

PhilippinesI want to buy land in the philippines, but...
Hi Economist,

It really depends on what type of real estate you're looking for. P220/sqm for farming property sounds about right. I've seen properties in Pangasinan, La Union, and Ilocos. And most of them start at P200/sqm. However, some beach-side properties in La Union and Ilocos go for P10,000/sqm! So, it really depends.

I'm not sure why there is such a large difference between the fair market values of Philippines and U.S. It does seem that real estate prices would be lower in a developing country. However, if 99% of people are asking that price, there must definitely be a demand.

It is true, there are many scammers out there just waiting for an unsuspecting sucker. And this comes to a very good point. Are you the one making the inquiries? Or is it your wife? I ask this mainly because Filipinos know how to deal with Filipinos. There is an art in the bargain game. And it depends on who is negotiating.

If you're interested in comparing other real estate asking prices, Sulit has a Real Estate section. There are some registration questions in Tagalog, so you may need to have your wife answer them.

I hope this helps some.

PhilippinesCatholic Wedding in the Philippines

Sorry, forgot to add, when my friend explained this to his wifes church, and of course made a "small" cash donation, the meeting part was no longer an issue. By the way, originally they wanted them to have 6 months of meetings.

Agreed. This is, by far, the best approach, IMHO. It cuts out the red tape/BS, and simplifies everything.

PhilippinesPOE experiences

I've been checking airfare for weeks now and China Air from MNL to LAX or SFO has the best deals. I've flown both of these routes and didn't have any problems at all, but of course I wasn't immigrating either. I'd like to fly Merlaine to LAX and I'll fly from here to meet her. I know LAX is a monster but I've been there so I know my way around some but how bad will it be for her? When I get there to meet her, will I be allowed into the international terminal at all or will I be sitting out front waiting? I'd like to have her POE be as easy as possible so any thoughts would be appreciated.

I know there's a thread here somewhere about POE experiences but damned if I can find it

I can't really help you with LAX, as I've never been there.
But here's the POE experience thread you were looking for.

Philippinestravelling from USA To Phils

For those who travelled with RP Passport and US Greencard from the USA to Philippines................after being in the US does traveller need any type of documentation to present from being out of RP for three years to re enter the philippines

I would bring a copy of your marriage certificate (if your husband is traveling with you) to avail of Balikbayan privilege. Both of you will receive Balikbayan visa, which is valid up to one year.

....also if bringing a laptop over there for personal use (and will be bringing it back home) do I need to "declare" anything, or fill out some forms? SHould I check it into the plane or do carry on???

I would definitely carry on your laptop. Laptops, cameras are not considered part of your allowed carry on baggage. You are allowed to bring these in addition to your carry on. Also, you'll have the peace-of-mind that your laptop is by your side...rather than possibly being stolen. You do not need to declare your laptop.

Philippinesshipping from the Philippines to the US

I'm currently located in the US and I was wondering if anyone knows a shipping company that ships from the Philippines to Seattle? I've got a 130 lb, 24x18x24 box I need to get to Seattle from Manila.

I found a bunch of companies that do the reverse, but virtually none that do what I need. Please help!

My wife has shipped balikbayan boxes (textbooks) from Philippines to Atlanta, GA and Dublin, Ireland using the regular postal mail.
It took about 10 weeks, but it is the cheapest, IIRC. Might be an option, if you're not in a hurry.

Yeah...I'm starting to read on the AOS as well because my girl will be here in a few weeks. I read on another VJ post that someone received an RFE and returned check for $1010 because he wrote one check. Does anyone know if you're supposed to send a check for $930 for the AOS fee and an additional $80 check for the Biometrics fee? Or do you just send the one check for $1010. And didn't this same outfit just pillage us out $455???

We sent one check in the amount of $1,010. It was cashed one week later.
I wouldn't send a separate check for the biometrics.

ok downloaded all the forms ......do I put her married name on it? or her maiden name ?

Depends on how she legally wants her name to be.
In my case, my wife used her married name on all forms. Her Philippine passport and SSN card had her married name, too. This will make the process much smoother, IMO.

I use Paypal to transfer to my bank in Philippines. I like it. It's not as fast as Western Union, but I'm in no hurry.

as what i heard they allowed up to 21days to stay, i dont have any chance to talked o to anyone at the consulate office. please help and thank you so much...

It sounds like you can avail of Balikbayan privilege, which is valid for 1 year. This is a FREE service for Balikbayans. It is available to "the spouse and the children of the Balikbayan who are not Balikbayan in their own right traveling with the latter to the Philippines."
The only documentation you would need to avail of this privilege is: (1) your expired Philippine passport, (2) marriage certificate, for your spouse and (3) birth certificate, for your child.

You may contact the Consulate General's office in Los Angeles to verify this information. This office has jurisdiction over Texas.
