CanadaTrip to DC..
Best way to get around here is metro and buses . We also have Circulator buses that cost a dollar. The circulator has routes that go to southwest waterfront to chinatown convention ctr, convention ctr to georgetown, navy yard to union station. And another route I'm sure I'm forgetting. Baracks Row in SE DC is basically a strip full of restaraunts. Best way to get there is take the metro (Green Line) to Navy Yard and the circulator stop is right there :) as for that big greasy breakfast he can go to Ted's, located right in that same area.

I knew they'd be able to sort ot for you. Have a great trip

Thank you! (F)
BTW if you don't get your NOA in time for your planned trips try and make an Infopass appointment too...she said they don't USUALLY do it but that they CAN do it :star:

Yeh, that is my plan of action. The staff at my local office are really lovely so I'm hoping I won't have any problems. To be honest, if I worked at the VSC (I've been in the building), I'd be slow at my job too. It's a depressing place :(

Hi guys!
I went to my appointment today with my infopass, and they gave me the I-551 stamp. I didn't even had to say that I was travelling soon. They kept my greencard, and gave me a receipt number that they say I can check on the internet (I don't know if I believe that). They say I can travel, work, etc with that stamp. I don't need the NOA anymore then.

Also with the I-551 stamp I was able to renew my drivers license (that expires in Virginia the day your greencard expires).

Good luck to everybody else!

Wow, thanks Churipu! That's good news!

I already bought my tickets yesterday, so I hope I get the stamp too at the appointment I have scheduled for October 6th...I'm travelling Oct 10th...
Maybe by then we all have our NOAs...who knows...

I wonder if you can renew your drivers license with just the stamp in your passport...here in Virginia, when
your greencard or visa expires, your drivers license expires too.

US Citizenship General DiscussionWhere to get certified/notarized copy of my foreign passport?
Thanks everyone! I'm in US. Have PRC for almost three years already, and would like citizenship for various reasons. I have contacted my embassy in DC, and they have suggested I just go there and they"ll notarize it, and take the application at the same time. Never realized how notaries are so limited in their powers in the US.

US Citizenship General DiscussionWhere to get certified/notarized copy of my foreign passport?
Please help as I'm at my wit's end. I want to apply for US citizenship but first need to "retain" my South African citizenship. For that the SA embassy needs a form filled out together with "certified copies" of my passport and birth certificate. In the states Maryland and Virginia, these docs cannot be certified/notarized, but I see in DC they can. I called up several banks and UPS/Fedex stores in DC but no-one will do it. Any help will be appreciated!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionCalling everyone going thru Islamabad Embassy, version 2.0

Hi everyone.

Now that my wife has received her K3 visa, I am starting to look into what comes next.

It seems like the AOS process requires vaccinations that were not required for K3. Has anyone gone through this already from Pakistan? What vaccinations are needed for AOS, and is it better to get them in Pakistan before coming to the U.S.?

Thanks again for all your help!

Salam everyone..it has been a long time since I have posted in this thread! :)

Regarding the question above, your wife will still have to do the medical, etc when she comes to the US so I'd advise just wait till you come here. it may be a bit more expensive but better to just get it all done here. I know we were told that my husband had to do the medical AGAIN here. He didn't need any vaccinations though for AOS but just the general medical/physical.

I have a question for the ladies here: how long did it take your hubbies (who came in on K-3s) to get their EADs or interim EADs? Any problems? We're being given a very difficult time and hope that AILF will file a class action lawsuit for people who are in our situation.

My EAD was approved by the USCIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, this is wierd. No emails from the USCIS. Just went into my portfolio, and it doesnt even say that I was approved. Just says card production was ordered! Me happy! Start to a wonderful day! lalalalala!

:) Congrats this was great to hear! Did you file your I-130 at the same time as the I-765? We did the same as we had to refile our I-130 as per our lawyer's advice.

It has been a long time since I've posted in this thread. I've been over in EAD/AOS. No progress or movement on anything whatsoever. sigh...

Salam everyone. I know I've been gone a longggg time...but life has been busy and I have been reading up just not posting too much.

We're well...still waiting on the hubby's EAD...8 months and counting...USCIS will not respond to inquiries.

Finally our lawyer got through to someone, case pending extra security in Texas. Arghhh...scary stuff

I was told if this does not come through in a few more months (read 1 year!) we may need to file a mandamus action. I'm not sure how i feel about that yet.

Anyone who has been having EAD issues? Mandamus experience? Btw, we are also not being given a temporary work permit for undisclosed reasons.

I have no advice but just wanted to say how sorry I was! That is just terrible! My hubby was climbing the walls after just 4 months of being unemployed, I could not imagine what you 2 are going through :(

I hope you get an answer or an approval soon!

Thanks Laney..just keep us in your thoughts. I hope your AOS comes through soon! :)

I think I just need to be informed and do what I can. I don't get it, we got our K-3 relatively quickly and now we're being held back. Seems so bloody inconsistent...

I will be sending my N-400 next week, Do I need to submit the IRS transcripts. I read the checklist and nothing about sending the IRS documents. The checklist states send the transcript only if somebody is out of USA for 6 months or more. I appreciate your input. I have been filing my tax and have no problem to send them if needed.

You don't have to send them. If they want to see them, they will ask you to bring them the day of the interview.

Just thought I'd post my experience here to share:

Pretty easy exprerience. Interviewer was nice and asked if i wanted to go straight to the history questions, since i can speak and write English (I'm British) He made funny jokes about he would pick the questions with the British parts! He asked 6 questions:

Who is the current VP?
What is the highest court?
How many representatives?
Who were sold as slaves?
Who makes the laws of the land?
How many stars on the flag?

He did note that I was very early in applying for citizenship and he was surprized (it's a little over 3 years). He also asked for some current evidence of marriage (I nearly didn't bring any, since i submitted them with the application!) Luckily I had my vet bill from the night before and a current bank statement and voila - it was over!! I have my oath scheduled for December 11th so that'll be a nice early Christmas prezzie!

Laura

Thanks Laura for sharing your experience, and Congratulations.

Hey Guys,

Had a question.

I got a letter for interview on Jan 7.

Now, does the oath and the interview happen on the same day ?

The reason i am asking is, I was planning to go to India from Dec24 - Jan 24, but I would need to rebook my tickets. I am not sure of the date now.

My interview is in Fairfax, VA.

Please advice.

Regards,

At the Fairfax VA office, 99.9%%%%% of the oaths happen the SAME DAY as the interview!! I had my interview over a month ago and if not for a small glitch (extra fiel they have to check on first) would have had the oath the same day. I asked my interviewer if that was the norm at this office and he stated yes! So be prepared to have the oath the same day! There is a parking garage their and it s a flat $5 to park, cash only I belive! As well it is extremely close to the Orange line metro! Like a 5 minute walk! As you walk out of the metro station, the building are straight ahead and a bit to the right!! Just walk through the daily parking and your there.

That is my field office. I know people who had their ceremony the same day, others not. But no later than the same week. They have at least one ceremony a week. Good luck to you.

US Citizenship General DiscussionCivics Test

QUOTE (Mononoke28 @ Dec 23 2008, 11:20 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
This is true, certain people are exempt from taking the US Citizenship test in English.

This is as per the USCIS web site:

Language
Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

* have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 15 years or more and are over 55 years of age;
* have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 20 years or more and are over 50 years of age; or
* have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

The officer will have a small conversation with your wife to make sure she knows enough English to pass the test or not, this is up to them. If they feel she doesn't, they will deny her and she can apply at a later time. So she needs to at least hold a decent conversation in English to pass.

Diana

Mystery solved! Thanks guys! I am constantly giving my wife flash quizzes. "Quick, write this: My dog has lots of fleas. I go shopping at the supermarket. They work well together. Now: read this out loud. And this. And this."

I think the toughest part will be the civics test, which she is currently studying in English. What really bugged me was this: Q: What kind of economy does the US have? Answer: Market economy. Should that be changed now with all the bailouts and nationalizations? Should we call it a "Mixed economy"? I were asked that question, I would probably get deported.

According to your timeline, your wife will take the new version of the naturalization test. In the handout they give you to prepare for the test (or online for that matter) you have all the words that your wife needs to learn. My understanding is that the language test should not be from outside this given list.
P.S. The word "fleas" is not on the list. wink.gif

Hi Everyone,

I am not sure if this has happened to anyone else but I sent my N-400 application to the Texas center yesterday and it is being forwarded to another location, I am not sure where it is being sent to and I am wondering if this is anything to worry about.

N-400 applications are being forwarded to the National Benefit Center (NBC), Lee Summit, MO for primary processing before being sent to local field offices. I think you don't need to worry.

I understand it is used to track your files in USCIS.

Why would they track her husbands files....SHE is applying for citizenship. Isn't her husbands previous immigration status is irrelevant, now that he is a citizen.

He says "a husband filing for his wife". I understand that he meant filing either I-134 or I-129F. In that case, and I'm sure it is, he needs to put his A# when he was a green card holder.
My humble understanding.

US Citizenship General DiscussionPassport Application after Oath Ceremony Question
QUOTE (KromiX @ Jul 14 2009, 08:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So, I have my Oath 7/27/09 @ 10:00 AM.

I plan to right after the oath go to the post office and apply for a passport by mail with the 75.00 Fee. (Non-Expedited).

I can do that correct? If so, When can I estimate to have my passport, for sure by the end of august if I apply 7/27 @ the U.S Post office right?

Questions:

1. What are the payment options, can I pay with credit card @ the post office?
2. Do I have to pay the $25 Acceptance fee or only the $75 ?
3. Do I need to take more pictures for it or were the pictures for my N-400 application I signed @ the interview for my passport???
4. By applying regularly on 7/27/09 @ the post office, I should have my passport by September 1, 2009 easily correct?

Answers:
1. Yes, you can pay by Credit Card.
2. Yes, you pay a total of $101.00
3. I don't exactly understand the question, but you need pictures for your passport application.
4. I got my passport in less that 2 weeks. Be aware that you will receive your passport and citizenship certificate in separate envelopes and maybe in separate days.

Good luck. good.gif

I passed my interview!!! kicking.gif Unfortunately I didn't get to do a same day oath, but I had expected that it would be too late in the day anyways.

My appointment was at 2:20 p.m. in Fairfax. We got real early to Fairfax and had a delicious lunch at the "Uno Chicago Grill". After that we had lots of time left since it stated on the invitation I shouldn't be there any earlier than 30 minutes before the scheduled time because of limited seating capacities. So we ran some errands and got to the USCIS office just before 2 p.m. Parking is behind the building in a parking garage, it costs $5 for all day. When we went into the building our bags were screened and we had to go through metal detectors (I had a camera and cell phone in there), but nobody checked our actual appointment time. So I guess we could have showed up a little early. The lady at the reception upstairs was real nice and there were lots of people waiting. But there are also a lot of IOs working there, so people got called up all the time. Around 2:45 my name was called, my husband was not allowed to accompany me. The officer made me swear to tell the truth and then the interview started. He wanted to see my passport, driver's license and greencard, that was it. I didn't need any of the other documents I had brought along. First question he asked me (which surprised me), was, if I had my German "Beibehaltungsgenehmigung" (it's a permission to acquire another citizenship without losing the German citizenship) and if it was still valid. Then he went we me over my application and some things on his computer. Then he had me read a short sentence and write the answer and he asked 6 questions. That was it, I was approved! kicking.gif I signed all the forms and my passport pictures. I asked several times if I should write my full first, middle and last name instead of full first, middle initial and full last name. But he said I should use the same signature I use all the time (e.g. on checks). So that's what I did. I didn't get sworn in the same day but I will have my oath ceremony where I live (they have ceremonies every other month). The officer was very nice and it was a real pleasant experience. I should be relieved but somehow I just want to get sworn in and be an American. Hopefully soon.

Good luck to everyone else! good.gif

Congratulation Stella. You will get your oath letter very soon. My oath ceremony is tomorrow.

This was because of forwarding instructions or because the address or ZIP Code on the label was incorrect." I am living in Alabama, I sent mine to USCIS,TSC, PO BOX 851204 Mesquite TX 75185. We just called the embassy, Dep. of State and Dep. of Homeland Security. It seems like the embassy has the final say on the finger print. They have no other way of doing the finger printing except the right index finger, scanned by the machine.

I wonder how they do this for someone who is no hand, or has birth defect.

Anyway, beside complete the forms correctly, please ask your fiancee to take care of his/her fingers and hands. They are important too.
