Africa: Sub-SaharanFlights from Lagos to Baltimore?
North American Airlines flies Lagos to JFK with connect to BWI but they cease operations May 18th. Delta flies Lagos to Atlanta direct then book connect to BWI/IAD. If you fly thru Europe then you can fly into BWI or Dulles. Best bets are Air France thru Paris, KLM thru Amsterdam, British Airways thru London and Lufstansa thru Frankfurt Germany.

Even if you fly NAA, you will have to go thru immigration at JFK before heading to BWI.

For all the bored men (and women) at home waiting for EAD cards, you can watch Olympic soccer on cable HD on NBC or if you have sports package, can watch the 24 hr soccer channel. In Washington DC metro area on Comcast, the 24 hr olympic soccer channel 221. You can also watch it on MSNBC and Telemundo. You can also watch it online at

You should NOT go. Just send your info as a RFE. I know someone who had the same situation. If you don't go, they will either re-schedule indefinitely and flag it. Caused them to lose EAD and other problems. They ask questions why spouse did not show. If you go, you run the chance of them approving since you knew about interview and showed up. You can explain later. You just want to slow or stop process.

QUOTE (Akinstacey @ Aug 4 2008, 10:51 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Many pages ago I threw in my 2cents for what it was worth. I've now just quietly read post after post after post. Each one getting more and more ugly. I can now say that as a White American woman, the wife of a Nigerian man, and the friend of a once Nigerian resident who was into scamming and then came here and even though he had 2 good jobs continued with scamming pulling in resources from Nigeria & South Africa (he's now in Federal Prison) I am just thoroughly disgusted with where this has gone. Abeg....we've shared our opinions, given our advice, now let the cards fall where they may. I personally don't even think someone should comment on Nigeria's conditions until they've actually gone and seen it for themselves. My husband lived in the very conditions that you described but he never once considered himself anything less than blessed. Sure, the jobs don't pay well (his brother has a masters degree and works for a large insurance company in Victoria Island yet only earns a few hundred a month), NEPA (the electric company) is a problem, the bathroom in his house is a toilet bowl in a cement room with a bucket of water for you to flush....I could go on and on but what for? My husband NEVER looked at these things as a problem or a reason for him to go out there and scam for money. If I called and he was in the middle of watching a movie and then "NEPA took the light", he would never complain. He'll simply say "well, I know they'll bring it back soon". IN all of our 100's of hours of talking before my going there, he never described life as bad. I never knew how bad his conditions there were until I went. But despite his level of poverty, despite the conditions of his home, despite the lack of resources in NIgeria, I never felt like we lacked anything. Even as I sit here today, I miss being there surrounded by so much family, love....people being grateful for having life. IMO, anyone in Nigeria complaining about how bad it is there, probably is trying to play on your sympathy or trying to Justify their lifestyle.

I, like Akinstacey, have quietly followed this thread. I am a man so have a different take but the original intent was what she should do. My main concern was to make sure she meets the requirements, gets to and remains safe in Nigeria and comes back with proper evidence and insight to file. All the other stuff, is between her and her significant other. I don't think anybody in this day and age doesn't know about 419 and scamming. She is going in with her eyes wide open. If she becomes a statistic, so be it. Most of us knew of the risks and decided to do it anyway.

The thing I love about Nigeria is that despite the poverty, corruption and all other things that make Nigeria, Nigeria, the majority of people are warm, friendly and happy. The family ties (family is an understatement) that include immediate, extended, village and tribe is something I don't think you will ever find in America. The power to find a way despite all the obstacles is what makes Nigerians, Nigerians. Yes, some are bad. But it is up to her to make that decision. I always say to my Mom, when I need to get well, I take a trip to Nigeria. The love you get and what I call the no stress zone for a few weeks is priceless. After a while you realize you don't need electricity, running water and other "essentials" that we take for granted here.

All I will say is if you need any advise on navigating Nigeria (especially Lagos or the east), send a PM. Otherwise, I wish you the best and enjoy your trip. Many are here to help so utilize those and then hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Also, unless things have changed since I was there (2007). You don't need anything to fly domestically. Just the ticket. You also have your passport. It is not the same as the US so be prepared. If you can, buy here in US. In Nigeria, the price can change by the minute while ticket scalpers (touts), will try to take advantage of you. Virgin and Aero let you buy online. Make sure he meets you at Lagos at the airport.

Africa: Sub-SaharanPlease Help!! Confused and Don't Know Where to Begin...
K1 is definitely the shortest. But I have a few questions.

1) Anything is possible in Nigeria. Always remember this.
2) Unless you have been to Nigeria before and know and trust others, let him escort you everywhere. Nigeria is a very friendly country but the chance of "dollars/pounds/euros" can tempt some. Let him do most of the talking.
3) US Embassy is more critical of male K1 than female K1. Even though it is not supposed to be, they are much more harsh with men than women applicants. They have been doing this a long time and your evidence has to be good. Like others above said, your passport and ticket stubs are important. You must have evidence you have meet as well as email/phone records. If this is your 1st time to get evidence, I would definitely add some lag time to application.
4) When you say ex, it is girlfriend or wife. If wife, he will need divorce papers to submit at interview.
5) If you do a K1, and then do a traditional wedding, some consider that a marriage and will convert you to a K3. Be careful to say it is not a traditional wedding if you want to do a K1. Just a family ceremony.

Most of us used K1. It is the fastest and easiest. Reading other posts and time lines, you will see it they call it a visa journey for a reason. Just read the guide

http://www.visajourn...amp;page=guides

If everything does perfect, K1 will take 6months to a year. K3 will take usually 2-3 years or more.

Good luck and I wish you the best. Just save all your emails, if you used a cell phone (old bills) and then takes lots of pictures, especially with his family and him and if possible, his friends. Save the ticket stubs from airline too.

As for entry, all you need is a visa. You don't need to worry about his passport as of yet. They might ask you at the embassy for an invite letter from him. View the pages at Washington, DC, NYC or Atlanta, GA.

could be a number of things.. been married before.. that often causes them to check the validity of the divorce... govt security clearance holders sometimes get checked out... and name checks that came up in USCIS also get redone or additional checks done at NVC... in any case.. its usually less than 4 weeeks to get done now...

Thank you for your help and your response. It was very encouraging. This is a great site so you are not left in the dark without knowing what is going on!! I did not know the information that you stated to me and sure enough, a couple of the issues you mentioned do apply to me so that may of been the hold up. Well, after 24 days at the NVC my case finally was sent to the embassy, so hopefully we can get an interview date in August. I hope my prayers are answered.

Our file was at NVC for "additional processing" since June 14 as well, but I just found out that they've sent it off to the consulate on June 30 :) I'm not sure why certain files are selected for AP, but it sounds like if NVC tells you your file is under AP, you can expect a standard processing time of 2-4 weeks, and they're pretty good about sticking to that time frame. So your file should be out of there soon. Good luck!

Does anyone know why the NVC would have my file for over 2 weeks? I see for most cases that the NVC only has the file for a couple of days. I have called a couple of times and they keep telling me my file is receiving some additional processing. What could that additional processing be? Does anyone know?

National Visa Center (Dept of State)DS-230 question 30 and military service
Hello,

My husband served in the British army for 22 years and was stationed in a number of different countries. I would assume that living on a base is still considered "territory" of the UK, but I am not sure what to put for question 30 on the DS-230 form. Should we list only the countries he has lived in outside of his military career?

Any advice on this issue would be much appreciated!

National Visa Center (Dept of State)Police Check Delay
Hi All,

My husband has been residing in Belize since 1995 and has recently had to apply to replace a lost residency card. He has been waiting 8 weeks for his passport to be returned with a stamp for his residency, and only with this stamp can he get the police certificate for that country. It appears that the Belize immigration office cannot locate his records (not a big surprise). Has anyone had a similar experience--- being unable to get a document that is required? Any suggestions on options for us?

Just for background, he is a British citizen and we married in Belize and are filing through the U.S. embassy in Belize. This is the last piece of documentation we are waiting for for the U.S. immigrant visa application.

Thanks in advance!

National Visa Center (Dept of State)Paying IV bill online
Posted this on another forum, but realized this is probably a better spot!

My spouse and I were stalled in the NVC processing for several months while waiting for a police report. Now we have all the docs and are ready to get the ball rolling again.

I paid my AOS bill ($70) a while ago, but have not yet mailed the I-864 documents (will do so tomorrow). The NVC Invoice page shows the IV fee of $400 as "Not Paid" but when I click to select that fee to pay, I cannot get past that screen. Does this mean my IV bill has not yet been generated? Does the I-864 need to be received at NVC before the IV bill can be paid?

I'd be grateful for any help!

National Visa Center (Dept of State)Version Date on DS-230
Hi All-

There is an expiration date on the upper left-hand corner of the DS-230. Are we required to use the most recent version (expires 2/29/2012) or is a previous unexpired version also acceptable (expired 05/31/2011)? I ask because my spouse signed and mailed me the previous version from overseas and I would prefer not to lose the time to have another one sent.

Thanks!

Africa: Sub-SaharanPreparing for our K-1 Interview at Lagos Consulate - PLEASE HELP!!
We recently receieved our NOA2. I also contacted the NVC and they informed me that our petition has left on January 10, 2013 heading to the Lagos Consulate in Nigeria. Me and my fiance are working on getting our additional documentation to update our K-1 Petition (such as letters of intent, more pics, Rebtel, call logs, WhatsApp Chat, etc) and we are also getting the Packet 3 documents together. We are going through the Lagos Consulate in Nigeria. So we would really appreciate hearing back from individuals who recently went through the interview process in Lagos. See our questions below! Thanks in advance!

1. What type of support should I attach to the Affidavit of Support (I-134)? Is this correct? Or should I add more support? So far I am including the following:
i. Tax transcripts from 2009, 2010, and 2011
ii. Employment verification letter
iii. Pay stubs (5 to 6)
iv. A copy of my birth certificate

2. Included in Packet 3, the OF-167 Affidavit of Support Instructions (Lagos form) it states that my tax transcripts must be notarized? Is this necessary for his interview? I was planning on emailing him copies of my tax transcripts. Has anyone had issues during their K1 interview for not having their tax transcripts notarized?

3. Do I need to send my original birth certificate to my fiancé for his upcoming interview? Or is a photo copy sufficient?

4. The DS-156K form states: “The following documents must be attached in order to apply for a Fiance Nonimmigrant visa – Your birth certificate, evidence of engagement to your finance, evidence of financial support, and police certificates.” Are we suppose to attach additional documents to this form? It seems that all the documentation within our K1 petition and Packet 3 documents will support what they are requiring. Please help clarify? Specifically, evidence of our engagement….we do not have the receipt for the engagement ring and we do not have any pictures of me wearing an engagement ring.

5. In preparation for his interview, which documents should he make extra copies of?

6. Can the $240 visa fee be paid in US Dollars or Naira?

Africa: Sub-SaharanHotels in Lagos, Nigeria
There are alot of hotels in Lagos. They range in price too with many being really expensive. Do you have a price range? I travelled on a budget so I stayed at the Inglesias Hotel in Lagos 13 Marins Street Off Ojuelegba Road Tejuosho, Yaba-Surulere Lagos NIGERIA. Phone numbers are 08154396937 and 08065117598. The rate was 7,000 Naira a night ($45). Not sure what area you are looking to stay but its not in the best area like in VI but the hotel is safe, very clean, IKEA like feel with furniture, and the staff is very helpful and nice. The rooms are small but has everything you need (flat screen AC, TVs, desk, chair, etc.) They always have light or run the generator throughout the night and most of the day. My biggest compliant is there a nice lounge and a club downstairs and I think there is also a club next door. So at times the music could be really loud in the evening. Not every night. Maybe because I was visiting during the holidays because it seemed to be alot of partying going on..lol But overall I enjoyed my stay.

Africa: Sub-Saharanwhen do i gather 2nd set of evidence?
Based on my experience, I started collecting documents every couple of months immediately after our petition was submitted. Just think you have so much information to collect such as WhatsApp Chat (text messages), yahoo emails, Skype logs, Rebtell Call History logs and reciepts, pictures, Passports stamps, Birth certificates, updated letters of intent, and most importantly start gathering all the Packet 3 requirements, etc. So you really dont' want to wait until the last minute. For me about 3 months after our petition was submitted my Mom was going to Nigeria so I sent a stack of documents with her for him to pick up. Then months later I travelled to Nigeria and brought the latest documents...mainly alot of updated evidence. We just continued to build and build. Also about 3 weeks before his interview I had to DHL some final documents that required my signature such as the letter of intent, affividat of support application and supporting documentation.

Keep in mind you can also forward by email alot of documents so your fiance can print them out on their end. It helps and keeps the cost down.

I hope this helps! Good Luck!

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaCosponsors - Peru

Lauren,

I'm also curious about the joint-sponsor situation. I just finished graduate school and will be starting a job (hopefully!) next month. But I obviously need to get the I-134 to my fiance before his interview on September 10th...looks like we're just a few weeks behind you! My mom will be filling out the I-134 as a joint sponsor...any word on whether Peru accepts joint sponsors? Good luck! This is such a crazy process!

McLain

Hi Guys, sorry I just saw these posts, but my fiance and I just had our interview in Lima so I can shed a little more light on the topic now. I ended up starting a full time job in April that put me well above the sponsor income requirement but I did bring the co-sponsor documents because I was worried that the embassy would have a problem with the fact that my previous tax returns didn't reflect my current income, in addition since my job is relatively new I was worried they wouldn't see it as stable enough. It's a good thing I did because she specifically asked for my previous two years tax returns (I had brought them but didn't present them initially because i was hoping they wouldn't need them since I had a lot my last 3 months pay stubs, a letter from my employer and bank statements). I gave them to her and explained that it didn't reflect my current income since I was a student in 2011 and was living in Peru on a Fulbright grant in 2012, but I said that I did have a co-sponsor if the income on my tax returns presented a problem. She said that they would need the co-sponsor documents. In the end we were approved with no problem! I would recommend though that you don't provide any of the original documents to the embassy, make photocopies because they keep everything you give them... good luck! Feel free to message me if you need any more advice! The interview was really much more low key than I expected, so try not to worry too much!

Thanks so much for you reply, Lauren! I'm so relieved to hear the Peru accepts co-sponsors! Do you know if it's ok to send the I-134 directly to my fiance for him to take to the interview? It doesn't technically need to go through USCIS or NVC, right? And we as petitioners need to fill out the I-134, too, even though we are currently unemployed but almost employed primary sponsors?

I'm planning to fed-ex or UPS all the originals from the I129-F, the I134s, the updated statement of intent, and more recent photos - around $80 to ship, but hopefully that's more reliable than USPS! Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to be at the interview with my fiance, so I'm hoping that won't be a problem...I'm sure your interview will be just fine!

Thanks, and I might be bugging you with a few more questions haha! Take care!

Also, don't worry about it if you can't be there... the CO actually looked surprised when I walked into the interview room with him... she was like, oh.. you're both here, that's great! haha but it's definitely not a necessity!

As for sending the affidavit, it's not necessary to send it to VSC... I sent it down via DHL to my fiance because at the time I wasn't sure if I would be able to attend the interview with him, it cost a lot but it was worth the peace of mind to know that it would arrive safely and not get lost in the black hole that is Serpost.

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaCosponsors - Peru
Hello Everyone!

I'm new to this page and I'm so glad I've found it! My fiancee is from Peru and he and I have been together 4 years. We were engaged in August while I was in Peru on a Fulbright grant and began the process for his fiancee visa in November and are waiting for his NOA2. I've been reading a few of the posts on here and I just have a couple questions. I've recently returned to the US after having lived in peru for a year and a half, before moving there I was a college student so I'm now starting my first "real" job search. I'm hoping to have a job which pays me enough to sponsor him myself by the time he goes for his interview at the embassy and will have to present the forms for financial support but as a back up plan my mother has offered to be a co-sponsor. I've been reading that some people say that co-sponsors are not accepted in certain countries and i was wondering if anyone knows if that is the case for Peru? Also does anyone know if it is essential that I return to Peru for the interview? Given that I will most likely be at a new job i'm worried about the feasibility of getting time off (and being able to afford a plane ticket while saving up for a wedding). Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!!

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaK-1 Interview in Lima process

Thank you Jenni I confirmed this on the USCIS website today. I had seen something about a "visa issuance fee" which claimed there was no fee required this is why i was confused. Good news is we received our NOA2 today approved in only 62 days! I was shocked. When I saw the envelope I was sure it was bad news.

Wow that's awesome!! Congratulations!! The rest of the process should move fairly quickly! We were approved in the end of may and had our interview Aug 6th, he picked up his visa last week! So I'd say you've got 2.5 months to go!! (it goes by a lot quicker than it sounds)  Good luck with the rest of the process, feel free to reach out to me if you need help in preparing for the interview!

Thank you for your reply it was very interesting.  However, you say you "paid"............you paid a fee for the visa or what? I have read there is no fee for visas at embassy. How much was it and what form of payment do they accept?

240 dollars paid at the interview. You can pay in cash or with credit card.

Some of the older threads also mention that you can request to pick up the visa (once approved) at the Lima DHL office (Callao) rather than having it sent to your Peruvian fiance(e)'s home address, which can save a few days. Good luck!

This is correct... the Lima embassy makes you register with DHL and choose the office you would like your passport to be sent to. No matter what you have to go to a DHL office to pick it up... it wont be sent to your house, but Callao is the DHL hub, so all packages are sent there first and then distributed to their respective local office. If you set your pick up to Callao you can save a day or two.

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaK-1 Interview in Lima process

Can anyone tell me if Im allowed to attend the interview in Lima, Peru with my fiance? Seems like Ive read a few post where the petitioner has attended with his fiance but some sites Ive looked at say no. Also does anyone know how long it takes to get your visa once you have passed the interview with the consulate in Lima? This would be helpful to know so I can start thinking about when I will travel from US to Lima to bring my fiance back with me and if it can all be done in one trip (interview and travel). Thanks and good luck to all.

You can absolutely attend! I'm flying down next weekend to go to my fiance's interview with him on Aug 6th! I've been investigating the second part of your question a bit to try to get an idea of when he will get his and it looks like as long as you aren't missing any documents/the medical exam when you go for the interview it takes about 2 weeks. If you have to send papers after the fact it can take 1-2 months more. I wouldn't book a flight before the interview takes place though and were actually planning on waiting until he receives the visa in his passport to book.

jenni17FemalePeru2013-07-25 18:37:00
Mexico, Latin & South AmericaLong wait for medical exam in Peru; make your appointment now!

My fiancee just called to make an appointment and they told her she couldn't make an appointment without an interview date.  Is there a way to find out or do we have to wait until the emabassy receives our case?

They told my fiance this too... make it anyway, we made the appt before having the letter and had no problems. They won't however give you the exam if you don't have the letter in person on the day of, but if your case is in transit and they're booking a month out, you should be fine. Note that the embassy will let you pick the packet up in person rather than waiting for it to arrive in the mail, just send them an email once your  ceac status shows that it's arrived... they even told us our interview date via email before going to pick the packet up

ChinaGuangzhou and the i-134 three years tax

So I am working off of the common assumption that I need to send the Guangzhou guys the past three years tax returns of my father for the i-134 who will be the sponsor.  The thing is, while he is above the 125% poverty guidelines this year, he was not the past three years.  Will this cause a problem?

This is a consulate specific question. It will vary by country. In my case I currently make well over the guidelines but I only recently started working in the position that I am now, the past two years I was a student and my tax returns didn't reflect sufficient income. I was worried about this and brought co-sponsor documents to our interview just in case. Good thing, because when they asked for my taxes I explained that my position was recent and they requested my co-sponsor docs. I have heard though that in other cases it has not been a problem as long as the current income is above the requirement. Which leads me to believe that each consulate prefers something different, so I would direct this question to your regional forum.

My US husband and I will be moving to the USA next year or in 2009, immigration process permitting. We currently live in Dublin city and while I have been to various parts of the US on holidays and been to see him when he still lived there before we got married, I have never lived in the USA (well, 3 months in Santa Monica, CA as a student but that is a very unusual place...). We are currently thinking of Colorado Springs (husband is from the South, but I don't do well in sweltering heat, so most of the South is out), but haven't decided yet. Basically, looking for a not-big-city, not-totally-remote place which isn't too hot and, of course, has good employment prospects (he's in computers, I am in callcenter/ event management).

I would love to read the experiences of other Irish-American couples, suggestions on where to live etc.

*Waves hi*

Well my Fiance is currently in Clonard about to head back up to Dublin for his interview and medical. I am originally from FL and let me tell you, I might be 3rd generation from FL but even I can't stand the heat and humidity. I currently live in the Washington, DC metro area where he will be joining me soon as he is approved. The jobs are pretty good here and there are a lot of immigrants so it is a bit more accommodating. The surrounding area is kind of like the suburbs of Dublin or even London. It can be very expensive (not as bad as Dublin imho) here but the pay is pretty decent. It is a bit more conservative due to Federal Government.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU! Hope you find a wonderful place to live and the immigration experience to not be difficult.

Europe & Eurasia (except the UK and Russia)Dublin Embassy
Last week my boy sent his Packet 3 back to the embassy finally as we thought we would have a month between the statement of reddiness and his interview date. We are still waiting on the UK Police Cert that is taking forever and now medical results (which he just had done today as we thought a month away). Well it seems Packet 4 showed up yesterday (March 3) with interview date of March 7th. ACK.

Thankfully they are very nice and let us reschedule. They told us soon as we get the UK police cert; which seems to be delayed for everyone, to call back and they would fit us in. I am sad he can't go on the 7th. I am irritated with myself cause part of it is my fault for not understanding when to do the police certs. But that was very fast.

Congrats!
Were they very detailed in the questioning? What were the embassy staff like?

I haven't gotten a lot of feedback yet from the lad but the general overview was very few questions were asked. Maybe 3. He had so much paperwork there they kinda looked at him and asked "Well can we see just one picture". I think it was a bit overwhelming with all he had with him. They also asked when he saw me last and how we stayed in touch. One of his responses was a very large phone bill.

Overall he said he was sitting around mostly. Oh and warning: Apparently the fee went up and they didn't tell us. So he had to run and get more money real quick out of the bank. Not sure how much. It wasn't a big deal though.

The machine was broken so he is going back Thursday to pick-up his passport with the stamp. Wed. they are closed.

Not sure if this should be here but I just wanted to THANK EVERYONE who helped through this process. I know this forum is what got us through, answered all of our questions, and has made this all possible.

Vinny flies here next Wed on the 26th and we will be getting married on April 18, 2008. We are so happy and can't wait to be together again.

SQUEE!

Much Thanks;
Dawn and Vinny
