Mexico, Latin & South AmericaAir Jamaica suspended flights from Baltimore
I am planning on going to Jamaica for my fiance's interview. Come to find out Air Jamaica suspended their service for the summer period from Baltimorebeginning July 1st. When I went to Jamaica in April, I found out my flight to Baltimore was cancelled and the were offering a flight to Philadelphia with ground transportation to Baltimore. Then to take the plane to use to service other heavier traffic routes, but coincidentally at the same time the are offering services from Nassau to Kingston. I love Air Jamaica because out of a lot of airlines that fly to Jamaica you can get a direct flight without layovers. Also, I would like to share this they have had so really stupid flight schedules. For instance, if I were to fly to Kingston and to come back to Baltimore, I would have to fly to Mobay in the evening and leave to Baltimore the next day in the morning. I have seen some other ridiculous flight schedules and I just wonder who makes these type of executive decisions. Has anyone recently felt frustrated with Air Jamaica since they have been bought out by Caribbean Airlines? Sorry yall had to vent a bit.

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaYardies a home and a farrin - Part 26!
This is for Ells, if it is real love with you and your husband then it will last. You and your husband has to work hard at it if you want to stay together. The reason I say this because I was once in a similar situation with my current fiance. When we first met we really liked each other. I came back to the states and we were good until I received a phone call from a female telling me he was occupied. It took us almost 4 years to get to where we are now. He ended up having a child with her and I had one with someone else and they are both the same age. I would visit Jamaica from time to time but was very hurt by how the whole thing went down. Although, he was trying to do right by his child the mother was unfit for him and his feelings were always there for me. One day I realized I deep down inside, I had more love for him than the guy I was with at the time. So we talked about what happened in the past and trying to move forward and agree to be faithful to each other. So, like I said if its true love you both have to work at it. If its only one person wanting to make it work then it makes no sense to try to make it work. Those are my two cents and I am keeping it real and clean.

We got approved today. I am so happy, but nervous because I will be entering the biggest commitment in my life and I feel like its worth it. Although we are climbing up in age, but we act like two teenagers hopelessly in love. I am glad this site is here. Thanks Matt about the birth certificate thing. I am considering whether or not to go and apply for copies while he is still here waiting on his visa or request for USCIS to return all the original documents, but the biggest question is will it include his birth certificate. RGD is a joke. Up until yesterday evening we had to track down his non-impediment to marriage certificate. I will check there website just in to see what the fees are. Thanks everyone for your help and support!!! Mi luv unno!!!

I know someone else who has been waiting just a bit longer than you. Don't forget most of the consular staff are American and a lot come home in August for a vacation. Slows things way down, happens every year.

Packet 4s have started being sent out again. The person I know who was waiting theirs was sent out Tuesday just gone with an interview date later this month.

Ooh thanks for that - that is definitely a comfort. I called the embassy today and they said I should hear within the week... fingers crossed. mellow.gif

Well if I hear from them this week, that will be about 5 weeks since I sent in the docs and checklist, so that would be about right yes.gif I will keep y'all posted

macd, get your fiance to call DOS from USA (which is much cheaper than calling London embassy). They should be able to tell you if there's anymore info on your file. They will also be able to tell you if an interview has been scheduled.

Hello, I am currently waiting to hear from London about my K1 interview date. It's been over a month now since I sent back the checklist and packet 3 and have heard nothing...

So, I am wondering how long on average other London K1-ers have had to wait for the letter?

I sent in my completed forms to the Immigrant Visa Unit, when will I be scheduled an appointment for my interview?

There is currently a back-log in the Immigrant Visa Unit of forms and applications waiting to be processed. If you have submitted the completed forms in connection with the administrative processing of your application, you should allow approximately three months for your case to be processed. During this period, we regret we cannot provide information on the status of the application or confirm if the forms have been received. On completion of the administrative processing of the application, you will receive notification of the scheduled visa interview.

United KingdomWhy did you decide to make the move to the USA and not the other way?
I moved over to the States because my husband was on a career track in the States that he couldn't follow in the UK. Also, I wasn't in a career which I was happy with, and I fancied a change of scenery. However like Holly and Patrick, I would prefer to raise my children back home, so I see us moving across the pond in the next few years. It's only fair after all

United KingdomWhat do you say when Americans tell you they are Scottish?
I've heard Americans say that so many times. I think it is a bit silly. My grandmother was actually Canadian, but I don't go around saying that I'm Scottish/Canadian at all... I understand that the US is a nation of immigrants, but saying "I am Scottish" just because your great-grandfather or even grandfather was is simply not true... I can appreciate that many Americans are proud of their ancestors. Actually I think they just WANT intensely to be regarded as Scottish, as they love the culture so much, so I will take it as a compliment. I've found that when I turn up at Scottish heritage events and mention where I am from, some people are mildly irritated and I swear they're jealous because I'm the real deal!

I work in a shop, and not a day goes by that someone does not ask me where I'm from, or the more blunt question "Are you English?". I was born and raised in Scotland by Scottish parents and I have maintained my Scottish accent. I don't mind people asking me where I'm from, and I usually get nice compliments on my accent. However I find it amusing that in this cosmopolitan country, I am regarded as a novelty because I'm foreign.

Ten times more irritating than claiming to be Scottish/Irish, etc. is when Americans refer to the whole of the United Kingdom as 'England'. This is obviously wrong to anyone who ever glanced at a map of the UK... I've had to explain this to quite a few people. One guy at work just did not understand that Scotland is a different place than England (or Wales or Northern Ireland for that matter). People tend to say "So, in England do you...?" I answer that I don't know what they do in England, as *shouts* I am from Scotland! Apologies to Americans reading this post - I know you're not all like this! And in any case I had the same problem when I lived in France, as was forever being called 'anglaise'...

Anyway, rant over. This is bringing out the Scottish Nationalist in me.

United KingdomLiving in UK or USA - second thoughts
When my husband and I first got together and during the visa process I was happy to leave Scotland for the US. I was keen to have a change of scenery, and of course totally focused on being with my other half. Two years down the line, the novelty has worn off a bit and I am looking at ways we can move back to Scotland. Don't get me wrong - I like the States, but I would like us to move back in 2 years MAX. I miss my family and my own culture. Luckily my man likes Scotland. Like everyone else however, we have to think about what we can do for a living over there. As we will likely be starting a family over there, finances will be crucial!

United KingdomHPV question
Hellooooo!!

I'm in a similar situation. I contacted my GP about this and they said that they didn't know when it was going to become available and if they would offer it privately to women over the age it will be prescribed on the NHS. My GP said to contact a practice down the road but I just moved out of the area so that may not be an option any more.

My mum found details of a private medical centre in Stockton that will administer the HPV vaccine....but it costs £500 for the full course!!!! FIVE HUNDRED QUID!!!! That's more than the bloody K1 itself, lol.

Has anyone else heard of finding it cheaper anywhere? How much do they charge at the medical?

Jess (& Jason smile.gif

Wow they do charge you an arm and a leg for HPV in the UK! For K1 visa you don't have to have all the shots up to date to get the visa, thus IMHO it is worth getting HPV in the US. It is more widely used and goes for around $125 (about half the price compared to the UK) per shot. You will need to get your first shot done to file AOS. Hope it helped.

They charge so much as it is not supposed to be given to 20 somethings. To the NHS it is seen as waste of their money and resources so they charge accordingly.

i think i might have to start practising..lol

I think it must depend on the Wal-Mart - the Kissimmee Wal-Mart that I was unfortunate enough to have to shop in did sell yorkshire Pudding batter, although it wasn't Aunt Bessies. I raved about Yorkshires (being a Yorkshire lass myself smile.gif) to everyone at work so when we had a pot luck for Thanksgiving I decided to make some!! Unfortunately was hampered by 3 things - 1) I've never actually made Yorkshire puddings before blush.gif 2) The Yorkshire mix from Wal-Mart wasn't great and 3) My crappy Disney-accommodation oven couldn't hold a temperature long enough to cook them properly!!

Long story short...I turned up to work with some batter discs rather than true Yorkshires. Everyone was VERY polite, bless 'em, but they weren't the best...

Oh, and MARMITE - FOOD OF THE GODS!!! I eat it straight off the knife LOL. Plus it provided me with one of the funniest moments ever when my other half (USC) tried it for the first time on a bagel.....his face was priceless. I doubt he'll be eating it again wink.gif

United KingdomBuying English foods in Florida
The Kissimmee Wal-Mart (just outside Disney property on the 535) has an international aisle with a small but quite wide-ranging British section. It stocks everything from Marmite to Bisto to McVities Ginger Nuts (yum!). They do also have Cadburys - but as other people have said, beware! Although it is not made by Hersheys it is also not imported from the UK and therefore still doesn't taste the same.

The way to tell true Cadburys - look for the royal seal on the wrapper on the back. If it doesn't have it, it's gonna taste like Hersheys and therefore taste like ####### (sorry blush.gif ).

In Old Town (old-style funfair on the 192) there is a British shop that does stock authentic British goods but when I went there one time the owner was less than pleasant. Admittedly I was reading the front page of the Telegraph, but if you're gonna charge $5 for a 2-day old paper don't expect me to buy it wink.gif

Round Clermont area (where my other half lives) again the Wal-mart does have a small international section as does Sweet Bay which opened a few months ago on Hwy 27.

Your best bet is the Kissimmee Wal-mart. If you want the real deal on Cadburys the only sure-fire way to go is to go to the UK pavilion at EPCOT - but $75 for a chocolate bar seems a bit extreme wink.gif

Orlando is my stomping grounds so let me know if you want any other advice smile.gif

Other than that.. we watch movies together, using the webcam and audio so that we're both on the exact same part of the movie and i love it when we both laugh at a certain part of the film. We also text.. he's on Virgin Mobile in the US and i'm on o2 here in the UK.. he has an unlimited plan.. and for some reason when I send him messages it bounces off a UK satellite.. sending my text to his cell FOR FREE!!.. i have no idea how i swindelled that!..

I didn't know Vonage operated in the UK? I'll have to look into that.

I get off quite lightly on the landline side of things anyway. I work for BT so I get free broadband as a company perk, and the VoIP phone that is included with that lets me call his cellphone for 1p/min which is awesome - quality sometimes leaves something to be desired but you can't have everything smile.gif

My latest discovery last night was intercontinental grand prix on Mario Kart Wii - I can see that getting quite competitive!! But his daughter can play too at the same time so it's something fun we can all do together.

As for other novel ways. Well, we both have work blackberries (work for same company) so we are always taking pictures of random stuff, like being out at the shops and seen something nice, or worked on the house and mailing them to each other, makes it more "visual" and makes you feel a bit closer as you see what they see. And I send her flowers, usually with badly rewritten song lyrics and have her try to work out what the original song was!

I like this idea smile.gif I am always taking photos of random stuff that I see when I'm out and about - my phone allows me to send an MMS message to an email address, so I can send the pics to him for free with a little message on what it's about, and he does the same for me. It makes us feel more like a part of each other's regular day-to-day lives, which is important cos sometimes I get in a tizzy about not being part of the 'furniture' in his life.

We suffered the same problem...I've always had international calls/texting on my phone as standard (O2 love me wink.gif) but he didnt and he couldn't receive my texts for ages. Kind of figured out the Facebook thing by accident. It's generally pretty reliable but sometimes it does just stop working - but it saves me so much money I can't complain smile.gif

To set it up log in to Facebook and click on/search for the Facebook Mobile application, then follow the instructions to set it up. You'll have to specify that you want personal messages addressed to you only texted to your phone - this means other PMs you get from other people will be texted to you to, but I don't get that many of those wink.gif Then make sure your other half does the same...voila!!

One amusing side-effect is that your Facebook inbox becomes stuffed with messages to and fro...planning on taking a printout of it as additional evidence when i go to the embassy wink.gif

Well I last saw the boy in May, it's now July, and my next trip isn't until 3rd October.....and whilst I don't want to wish away a generally lovely British summer, I am going slightly crazy here!!

So it made me wonder, just for fun, how you guys stay in touch while apart? Not just literally but emotionally as well. We use the obvious methods of Skype, letters, etc...Facebook is single-handedly responsible for lowering my phone bill though. I set up Facebook mobile so every time he sends me a PM it is converted into a text message to my phone - I can reply by text too (standard UK rate i.e. free on my contract smile.gif and then the message I send back is turned into a text at his end. So it's a convoluted but ultimately free way to text each other.

Plus I send him Disney pins from other Disney parks I've been lucky enough to visit around the world smile.gif

Does anyone have any unusual things that they do for each other to keep the romance alive? (I do NOT mean that in a dirty way, btw tongue.gif)

I agree with Nik/Heather, the hardest part for me (apart from the 5 month NOA2 wait where no one knows anything but everyone wants to know everything) was the wait between the visa approval and the US entry. Because then everyone knows for a FACT that you're leaving (even though you might have told them many times before) and all the emotions come out... sadness, happiness, worry, excitement.. and of course all of the packing and preparations!! And the sheer anticipation of knowing you have that visa in your passport but you can't just hop on a plane until you've sorted stuff out. Those last few days... wow.

Yeah I think I'm worrying prematurely about all the emotional impact, in particular leaving my best friend and my mum who I'm extremely close to. But ultimately the realisation came that no matter how much time I gave it to wait and see if me & the boy were 'right' before taking the plunge, the only way I was ever gonna find out was to bite the bullet and just do it. I'm very cautious so it doesn't come naturally......but I'm getting quite a rush out of it right now biggrin.gif

my car is the biggest thing i want to sell sad.gif the rest of my stuff doesnt really matter. i cant seem to find anyone locally who wants it, and webuyanycar.com wont give me a good enough price.. but there's still a bit of time left smile.gif

Have you tried eBay for that? I know a couple of people who have sold them online, you reach a wider audience than locally and the prices aren't exactly rock-bottom...listing fees are higher than your average DVD but might be worth a shot?

This is something I won't have to deal with for a while, but I'm fortunate in that I don't have any furniture etc so I don't have to worry about getting rid of it. I am my father's daughter, and I tend to hoard anything of even vaguely sentimental value, but I've recently been training myself to be totally brutal...but I suspect when moving time comes EVERYTHING is going to have a sentimental value, so I'm going to have to be a tough old stick and stay ruthless!!

The thing I'm most sentimental about is photos & jewellery, though, and they're easy to deal with smile.gif

United KingdomOld forgotten bank account, and Student Loans Direct.
QUOTE (thejoz @ Nov 29 2009, 10:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I also have student loans with Student Loans Direct. As yet, I haven't paid anything off, as I haven't reached the repayment threshold, but I realized that this bank account was the one I originally gave them when I went into repayment for the loans. If I close the account, will this cause dire problems when I come to repay? What is the best way to repay, anyway, when you're overseas - has anyone done it? Did you use Direct Debit with a UK account, or some other method?

I don't want to screw myself up, but I also don't want to keep this unnecessary "tie" with the UK if I don't have to and have it present any kind of problem when it comes time for Removal Of Conditions or citizenship.

For the bank account thing I would keep it. As many have said you never know what the future holds...and there's no harm to it. Much as I currently use my Nationwide account when I go to see the Boy because I pay very little in terms of overseas fees, I'll probably use it once I've gone over on my return trips to the UK smile.gif

Regarding the SLC, once you reach the repayment threshold if you are overseas you have make payments directly to them rather than them taking it automaticlly via PAYE - at least this is what I understand. You declare your earnings once per financial year and they calculate your repayments monthly. So therefore from a student loans perspective it doesn't matter whether you have a UK bank account or not smile.gif

United KingdomBritish Airways Strike!
QUOTE (david'sgirl @ Dec 24 2009, 01:56 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
His flight is tomorrow so fingers crossed! He is checked in and it says on time but they delayed and cancelled a lot today. I was looking at photos and I cant believe what a lousy job they do clearing the roads. Grit as they call it (sand as we call it) doesnt help if you are throwing it atop unplowed snow! Here we get snow and life goes on a susual and there it's like life screetches to a halt but it doesnt snow as much on a regular basis. Just our luck it came now!
I'm so looking forward to this week I hope he gets here safely.
Hope you have a nice Christmas!
Di

A friend of mine was visiting from Orlando Dec 11 - 22....her flight home was delayed by 11 hours *grimace* ironically it wasn't our weather, but the weather in New York where the inbound flight was originating from. Rotten luck. 11 hours in Manchester airport - it could only be worse if it had been Leeds Bradford.

I fly out with BA on Jan 7th to see my boy so I'm watching the IR situation very carefully...there's no way they can turn around a new ballot before then though, so I'm hopeful.

Obviously if they decide to strike on the 17th and delay my return to the UK for a few days that's absolutely fine wink.gif

Hope everybody's Christmas plans went according to plan!!

United KingdomSNOW!!!!! Argh...
Anyone else travelling stateside in the next few days?

I'm due to fly to Orlando to see my boy on Thursday but I'm freaking out because I'm in Leeds and I have to try and get to Gatwick...it's snowed really heavily here today and has now stopped, but it's heading south and I'm panicking that the trains won't be running in the morning and I won't be able to get to London.

My flatmate is coming with me and we have a backup of the glorious(!) Megabus, but right now I feel like my fate is in the hands of the weather gods...and they don't seem to be playing nice right now.

Even if the worst happens and we're delayed sure it'll only be for a day or so but when I see him so infrequently a day lost feels like the end of the world...plus, I'm running the Disney Half Marathon on Saturday, so if I'm more than 24 hours late I won't be able to run...

Torture!!! Argh!!!

United KingdomPolice Certificate - how many copies?
Hi all

So as I wait very unpatiently for my NOA2 from VSC........sigh........ I am being prepared and getting as much of my paperwork for the Embassy in order as possible, starting with my police certificate.

How many copies will I need? I know the Embassy likes things in duplicate so I was going to order 2 but is this enough? Or will photocopies do?

Cheers :)

United KingdomTravelling after returning Packet 3...

I think the cautions not to travel late in the process are not so much about whether or not they will let you in but that it may slow the visa processing as they may have already looked up all of your entries and exits and then you go and add to the record, and they have to pull up the information all over again.

If the possibility of a short delay before visa issuance is acceptable to you, then there's no objection.

Thanks to everyone for your advice :) our wedding isn't until November so we have plenty of time. Bit frustrating that they will have to pull the info again, but it's our last 11 days together for 6 months until I move...so it's worth it.

United KingdomTravelling after returning Packet 3...
Helloooo

I got my P3 today and am obviously dead keen to return it ASAP (hopefully). However, I'm going for one last pre-move trip to see the boy on April 21st.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experiences of travelling after they'd returned P3? I read on another thread a while back (which I tried and failed to find) that it is definitely possible but I'm wondering how much hassle I am likely to get if the IO can see that I have a pending visa application.

Planning to take a letter from my boss stating when I'm due back to work, my lease, return ticket and a credit card bill...any other suggestions?

I am desperate to get the P3 in and get an interview date confirmed ASAP but suffice to say I am pretty nervous about my trip next month!

Thanks :)

United KingdomI made it!

Arrived in the US on Tuesday and seeing my husband there was the best feeling ever.
Now I am ready to start our new life together...after all this time waiting, it finally happened and it is WONDERFUL.

Saying goodbye to my family was heartbreaking, but they are all happy for me and I know I will see them again :)

Thank you to everyone who helped along the way...you are great...and to all those people still waiting, do not give up hope...it's worth fighting for :)

Awaiting the arrival of my belongings now, but I have a lot of adjusting to do in the meantime.

Congratulations :D
