Atlanta was very easy for us and we only had a 2 hour layover. Between Balvino and the cat I was pretty worried but we were fine. Balvino says that most of the questions were in English but the guy spoke a bit of Spanish as well. Balvino is doing well. He does complain about the cold a little. The reviews of Atlanta on VJ are pretty good. Keep us posted I am so excited for you.

Hmmm, well Josue doesn't understand or speak much English at all, but usually in international airports like that there are always ones who speak Spanish. I do feel bad for all the countries - Russia, MENA, China, etc. - if the visa-holder doesn't speak English, b/c Spanish is at least a little more common to find someone to translate. On the flight I have been watching we will have a 3.5 hour layover, hopefully it will be enough time for us to grab a bite too. I've always connected at Fort Lauderdale, so I don't know anything about Atlanta. Hopefully we can find something in that time!

I will keep you all posted - I still have 11 days til the interview, and I assure you once the visa is in hand we will be in the internet b/c we will be searching for flights!

He's renting it for $650 a month, I'm not sure whether that's good or bad as I don't really know the area but I imagine rental prices have increased due to people unable to get morgages to buy.

Im hoping our issues are nothing to worry about. Basically when he was here last month we were very distant with each other, it's like we were strangers. I think we had got so used to not being with each other that when we were back together it felt wierd, like he was invading my personal space. I still live with my parent's so it probably felt cramped. He was here 10 days and I don't think that was long enough to get back into being a proper couple. I told my boss all about it and he said he and his wife went through the exact same thing when he came back from the Falklands after 9mths (he's ex military). A couple of other people said the same so I'm hoping it's just temporary. Tom's been under a lot of stress too, he hated Bahrain by the end and just wanted to go back to the US after being 4 years away.

Very cute house, not a bad price either! I know the feeling about the distant thing, it's so hard after being so used to talking on the phone/internet vs. actually being with that person and being able to do all the things that you've been "I can't wait until...ing" the whole time. I know when I saw Josue in December the first several hours were that way - is this real? It's been so long! You look a little different! But it does take time to adjust and I am sure that with the good foundation you two have you will be able to recover quickly. It's so nice that your boss has allowed you this time off, especially since he knows you won't be sticking around for the long haul. You must be pretty indispensible!

We are still house shopping, but with all the prep for the trip going on I haven't looked at any houses (other than drive-bys), I think it will be best to just wait til Josue gets here. I know it's going to be hard for him to adjust with the language barrier and all, so I'm excited that I was able to find a bilingual RE agent so he can ask a million questions and I don't have to translate! Yay!

I hope he's looking forward to me coming! He's said he has. Unfortunately we haven't been able to speak much about it the past month as he's been without the internet a lot. He just moved in on Tuesday and he has no connection yet. He has no phone either.

The last two trips I took to see him, once to Bahrain and once to the US were fine, like we'd never been apart, it was just this one. However it was a longer separation this time than it was between the other trips which I don't think helped.

thats sounds like things just havent been easy (distance, lines of communication, privacy, time, etc) for you to have the relationship. so these two months will be a breeze! when you will have all of those things (closeness, face to face communication, phonecalls, privacy, tons of time, plus A SHED!), things will be a lot simpler adn a lot less effort.

cant wait to see the house with some furniture!

You could try emailing the embassy, which is what we did. We asked if it was possible to change the address, and they just sent us packet 4 via email. Email them asap in case in takes a while for them to respond, you don't want it to be sent out if you won't receive it.

Anne, is Johan home? I leave in one week for Guatemala and our interview is in 10 days!!!

Hey Chelsea and the rest of the thread!
Yep, Johan arrived yesterday afternoon kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif
Everything went smooth thru immigration. He just went right thru the line with the other
non-USC/non-residents and then the IO sent him to a separate office where they only
asked him "when do you plan on getting married?" I think the entire process took about
45 minutes.

We are going to get our marriage license today!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif

Chelsea & Laura: are you two getting prepared & excited for your trips!!? star_smile.gif star_smile.gif

That's so exciting! I am so very nervous and excited for my trip. I just have this horrendous fear that the one thing they ask for I won't have and so they'll make us wait forever before giving him his visa. Or worse yet, AP. Other than the paperwork, I am definitely a procrastinator! The four pages (2 spreads) I did in my scrapbook are all I have done in the scrapbook, so if I don't finish it this weekend I will most likely just putting all the photos in an album just for them to flip through. I can always finish the scrapbook later. I can't pack til Tuesday just because I'm always the dummy that packs her toothbrush or shampoo or something and so won't have what I need to work Wednesday lol.

I hope everyone's processes continue going smoothly. I saw another couple October filers approved on the 30th and 31st!

Enjoy your trip Chelsea. Good Luck with everything. I know you will do fine. When are you leaving Laura? I am a little out of the loop. Just a tad distracted:)

Good question about Atlanta - maybe I haven't read ahead enough to get the answer, but we will most likely be going through Atlanta too so glad to hear they have a pretty low harrasment level. Winifredbee, does Balvino speak English? Was his questioning at POE in English or Spanish? And thanks for the good wishes star_smile.gif

I have a few questions too. How long do people generally wait to file for AOS? Can I file the EAD now? We went to the local SS office and they were nice and the process seems very straight forward. We have to wait 10 days until he is in the system to apply for the SSN. I am so eager to move forward but do not want to jump the gun. Balvino is here only a week and he is already doing yard work with the Brazilian guy that works for my family. He makes friends so easily I know he will do well. We have been here a week today. Ordering pizza tonight to celebrate. I want to see some of you on Facebook. I posted some photos of our kitten and Balvino here in Boston.

http://www.facebook....h...2650&ref=mf

We plan on filing AOS (together with EAD & AP) as soon as we fill the papers out and have the marriage certificate, etc, hopefully by early-mid May. Mainly because my brother was kind enough to give us an early wedding gift of the $1010 for the AOS and so that Josue can get his EAD sooner and start working. When are you two getting married?

I'm so glad to hear Balvino is adjusting well! What state are you in again? I'm glad Josue is not arriving in the dead of winter b/c I don't think he has ever seen snow in his life and it would be quite a shock from 70* F weather year round.

Josue and I are still torn about eventually settling in Guatemala, but we have decided financially it is smarter to live here for at least several years first.

I am not certain how Josue and yourself feel about this, but he will want to stay in US for at least 4 to 5 years if he is interested in becoming a citizen. At first my fiancée was just interested in becoming a permanent resident, but when I told her of having to reapply every ten years for a green card, not being able to vote, etc. she decided citizenship would be the best route. Of course the two of you can leave the country during that time, but it can't be for more than a year (preferably not even six months), and all the time he is out is not counted toward citizenship. It's been a couple of months since I read the guidelines, but I believe eligibility begins three years after being granted permanent residency.

Yes, we are interested in this mainly for the purpose of reentry should we decide to relocate in Guatemala and also because we may petition for his parents to come here, well, he will be the one to petition. My grandmother has been here from Germany almost 50 years and the last time she went to do her biometrics for her green card, her fingerprints wouldn't read well on their digital scanner since she's 70 and she just plain ole' doesn't have much of fingerprints left. They had to make 3 trips to Washington DC - it was a real pain for her and my grandpa.

I did read that also, the 3 year requirement. It is 5 years normally but 3 years based on a fiance/marriage visa. So it would be him gaining PR status (I say by next Spring at the latest) then 3 years, then the process to naturalize - another 6-10 month process, so the soonest I say is around 2013-2014 when he could be a citizen and then petition his parents. But shoot, some people have been members of VJ throughout their whole process and are now petitioning their own parents! We'll see how all that goes - because he also has younger siblings (current ages 9 and 18) so I don't know how that would work with at least his youngest sister...so much to do!

Thanks for the info!

A bit off topic, but I just found out that one of our teacher's has retired this week. She couldn't take the kids any more. Another teacher on the same grade level is in the hospital for stress related illness; I'm not sure whether she'll be back this year or not. A third teacher's son suffered a serious accident last week and she hasn't been back. Another teacher has gotten pregnant in vitro and has been in and out over the past month; she may end up leaving at the end of this year. Several other teachers have been absent on a regular basis with some saying that they're "done." Needless to say, morale is quite low! I've never before worked in such an inhospitable environment . Meanwhile I enjoy my classes, get along very well with colleagues, really couldn't be happier. A bit strange, huh?

A little earlier in the year, I was unsure of whether I would have to transfer at the end of this year due to a glut of English teachers here. With all these recent occurrences, I can't see how they could afford to lose me. If I am retained, I shall receive tenure on the first day of this coming academic year. I owe the city this coming and the following year, as they helped pay for my Master's degree. Beyond that, with my to-be wife here I am uncertain of whether I shall continue to teach in Baltimore or look elsewhere. Although I am quite happy and optimistic, I must admit it is an enormous challenge working with child of whom 94% are below the poverty line; more than 70% come from single parent homes (though many are not living with either parent); more than 50% are below average in their reading comprehension and writing skills; several show emotional disturbances; some are already convicted felons; some have committed violent acts on school grounds, yet remain here, etc.

All said and done, I shall have spent five years teaching here and perhaps that is sufficient. I hear stories of teachers who move to more affulent areas to find a lack of fulfillment because their students are doing just fine and it does not matter so much who teaches them. I believe ultimately it will come down to the decision that my fiancée and myself make together, once she's here and settled in.

Wow you have a lot going on at your school! I will also receive tenure the first day of this coming school year, and just yesterday I signed my letter saying that they have offered me a position and that I accept. Josue and I are still torn about eventually settling in Guatemala, but we have decided financially it is smarter to live here for at least several years first. We are going to try to buy a house this summer (as we have to be out of our apt by August 1st and they are offering the first time home buyers tax credit if you buy between 1/1 and 12/1/09). I salute you as you are a teacher in an inner-city school, as I teach in the suburbs, I guess you could say. There is certainly the fair share of single parents homes, below average, disturbed children, but teaching an elective class (Spanish), many don't take it as it is not a requirement for graduation. I admire you for hanging in there, it seems you have created a rapport with the students and that you have a positive outlook.

Chelsea - I think they can use it as a multiple entry visa for 10 years, is there anything on the embassy website about it?

Tom found a house to rent last night, the first one he went to see. So I finally have an address which is great.

Thanks for the info - I'll have to do more research, I just thought I'd ask in case any of my October friends had any experience with this.

Congrats! I meet with the bank this Sunday (I know, strange, right?) to see how much I qualify for and I found a bilingual real estate agent! I can speak to Josue fine, but I figured it would be good for him to be able to communicate directly with the agent, ask his own questions instead of having to rely on me. I will meet with her next week sometime just to touch base, but she knows I am waiting for him for April!

HI Chelsea,

Yes, the 10 year tourist visa can be used multiple times over 10 years. However, the officer at the port of entry will determine the lenght of the stay, but generally they give you 6 months. I Hope this aswers your question

Thanks for the info - this is helpful because we will want his parents to come visit in the next year or two! We'll have to check into all the requirements for what papers they need to bring and hopefully they won't get denied. Cross that bridge when we get there!

Well I just plain forgot to post up about our petition being approved. Vermont recieved our petition on October 1, 2008. We got approved on March 2 and I called the NVC and it only took them 4 days to forward the petition to the embassy in Hong Kong. Lorena recieved her packet from the embassy on March 20. I'm getting so very excited that she will soon be here with me...;-)

Congrats!! Sounds like things are going smoothly. We were approved the same day and we are flyng home together tomorrow.

Chelsea, Yeah... We picked up our visa last Friday. The Embassy here was so fast. Balvino was so excited. Having the visa in hand was very important to him. Each step has been a hurdle for me. I can't believe Balvino and I will be in my house tomorrow.

Good luck everyone!

That's really exciting! Tomorrow is so...close! I leave two weeks from tomorrow to go see him and hopefully come back with him! Come back asap and let us know some of his reactions...has he ever been to the US?

Speaking of which, does anybody know how the 10 year tourist visa works? Does that mean they can use it multiple times over 10 years or just that they have 10 years to do it but only 1 time? We're just wondering what it's going to take to get Josue's parents here to visit and since the visa fee is $131 a pop I wonder how that works. Thanks!

When I went to the embassy they actually made a change on my DS-156..in red ink. Both of Balvino last names needed to be on the first line. Duh just like the passport. It was nice to know that they do allow a little room for human error. I hope all is going well.

Now I need to double check on that with Josue. The thing is we have just been using his paternal last name (which is also the name I will take) and listed his complete name with maternal last name in "other names used." Before I found VJ I had bought a book about Fiance & Spouse Visas and there was this section about "What is my name?" but there was nothing for Hispanic names grr so we just did the best we could. Everything has been ok up til this point, hopefully it will continue to be that way, but I will double check on the DS-156 we filled out.

You two are coming soon, right? Do you have the visa in hand? (Sorry, I remember the interview went well I just didn't remember if he actually had it already or had to wait for mail, etc.)

Do you really need an address for him? I have not received anything since the NVC letter and I doubt I will - I guess they just want to know where you will live, but we will be moving from this address within 3 months of him getting here. The most important thing is getting the Visa to you. If they say mail it in piece mail, mail it in piece mail and tell them the address at the interview. Or if possible, put the address of a close friend or family member just so they have something to reference, then go from there. People move all the time, and especially with him being Military I can't see how that will be a problem.

I had a look at the DS-156 last night and because you fill it in electronically I'm not sure I want to leave the where I will be living address blank. At least with the other forms the embassy can pen the address in. Tom told me last night he's been given next week off to search for a place so we should have an address by the end of next week.

That's good! I hope you find something.

But about the DS-156, you fill it out electronically but you still print it, right? That's what we did; there was no way to "submit" it once it was filled out, it just compiles the fields you fill out into an Adobe form.

118 days till my fiancée is here! That's less than the time between NOA1 and NOA2.

I tell her that each day is like a step on a staircase, so each day is one step closer to her. I actually envision us in a Salvadore Dali painting with these long spiralling staircases floating up through the heavens, and we are each stepping down, slowly approaching each other.

That's awesome!

I am also the countdown queen - 22 days til I see him, 26 til the interview, 32 til he hopefully comes back home with me and if so, 33 days til our wedding! There are also 79 days til graduation (that's not school days and it includes Spring Break) which means I only have 2 or 3 more days til I'm out for the summer and we begin our 2 months honeymoon! My brother gave us an early wedding present yesterday - a check for the amount of the AOS fee so that we could make some better summer plans! This also allows us to apply for AOS about a month earlier than we were expecting, which means he will potentially be able to work (or at least look for a job!) a month earlier. Things are falling into place and they will for all of you too!!

Bintang & Michele, still keeping my fingers crossed for your NOA2!!!!!!

She did not speak English, so there was a Thai translator and my fiancée said one of the questions asked of this lady was "When was the last time you slept with your fiancé?" I told my fiancée to be prepared for some abrupt questions. She doesn't seem to mind at all though.

Congrats Anne!!!

Guatemala doesn't have a packet 3 either, it was pretty nice because once we found out it was at the embassy we just emailed them and they emailed us packet 4. Good thing, because like I have said before, the mail system down there is horrendous. He still hasn't received packet 4...and we got it via email 2 weeks ago! His address is: such-n-such street, in front of the Catholic Church. How specific, right? So unless the postman knows his name specifically and where they live, it may end up at the tortilleria a couple doors down, or the motorcycle sales place the other way, or at the corner store. It's crazy!!!!!

Interview tomorrow, right winifredbee? We've got less than 4 weeks to go now til I get to see him (last time was Dec 31) and get ready for the interview, quiz him on my parents' names, where they live, how old my brothers are, etc., and go to the interview with him!

Anybody know how that works - if you go to the interview with your SO, isn't it kind of weird that they ask you "when did you meet, what does she do, etc." if she is sitting right there next to him?????

This is not a very good picture but this is my dress (I think) and shoes for my wedding. I say I think because I tried it on, it fit, but it was a little bit tight, so I ordered the next size up. It should arrive this week. If it doesn't fit then I'll have to keep looking (I can take it back)!!! Anyway, you can't see, but it's knee length. Also, the skirt is pretty flowy but you can't tell hanging on the coat hanger. Again, we're just going to the courthouse but I figure it'll be nice for pictures.

A bit off topic but related to the college dorm comment; I am just wrapping up my electronic portfolio for Johns Hopkins. Each teacher in the Master's program must create an online portfolio that highlights your teaching ability and content knowledge. It includes uploading nearly 70 pieces of evidence to support your written essays. I just emailed the link to my advisor and shall wait to hear back. Hopefully there is little or nothing to change, as the deadline is tomorrow night and my presentation for it is in less than two weeks. Once this is done I just have about a month more of classes, albeit very light courseload, so really this is my last big assignment before graduation.

It's good timing that you are finishing this and won't have to do it once your fiance is here!!!! Congrats!

Oh and ThaitoUSA - I'm in Lynchburg!!

I know. That is how come I mentioned it. Don't happen to know the Ditterline family, do you?

Lovesponge, sorry to hear, but it very well could have been for the best. I am sure your fiancé shall be happy to oblige.

Oh, I hadn't realized I had mentioned it. But nope, can't say that I do.

Lovesponge, I am very sorry for your loss but keep your wonderful attitude - you two will soon be together and can try again!

winifredbee, email/send a PM to Captain Ewok - he's "the bomb" and will definitely fix it!

I don't have a Facebook - I had one in college when you had to have a college verified email address to sign up for an account. I deleted it after I realized just how much time it took! Now my most recent addiction is...what else could it be but Visa Journey!!!! LOL

I feel the same way, unless you are in this same waiting game day in and day out, when you tell a friend "We got approved, now we are just waiting for the interview" they're like "Oh yea, when is he coming?!?!!" or even "that seemed quick!" I'm like "ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME???? QUICK?????" They truly have no idea what all is involved, the expense, the stress, the paperwork, etc. So thank you VJ and especially thanks to "October 08 K1 Filers Vermont Service Centre" biggrin.gif

m & m and Ruby, we are here for you and we will be overjoyed with you when you get your NOA2's - we know what it means!!!!!

Those looking for tickets, don't forget that one way is not your only option. You can always buy a round trip and then just call and cancel (or just not show up for) the second leg. Round trip often is cheaper and sometimes you can even reschedule the second leg if you can find a cheaper one way later...

I keep looking for the ticket for April 19th for Josue to come back with me, but I can't buy until after we have the visa in hand. But it looks like round trip is definitely going to be cheaper for us!

Oh and ThaitoUSA - I'm in Lynchburg!!

Maybe we will actually be approved by May?!?!? whistling.gif

If only that could be true.

I know, hopefully we get lucky but you know i've seen that most of the people that filed August and September got their approval within 5 months. So May NOA2 approval would be a great gift to us. yes.gif star_smile.gif

A question for all my fellow December filers!

As we all are away from our loved ones I am curious to find out how you keep connected... and in each others lives while apart?!? I have been here in the US with my fiance since September of 2008 and we frequently see each other... alas, I will be going back home this coming weekend and was wondering how the rest of you stay connected.

Thanks!

Wow..MissDinaDee you've been so privilege to be able to spend all those wonderful months with you fiance. How Nice. star_smile.gif Well for me, as far as staying in touch with my Fiance i could have bought a part of some phonecard company by now with all the money i've spent. biggrin.gif I use to spend $300 a month on buying phonecards on pingo.com, yahoo voice, aol call out, rebtel, nobelcom, tel3 advantage, localphone.com..... you name it i've probably tried it. So i've recently cut down on the calls so we talk on the phone just on the weekends and we email eachother everyday. My purse is looking much better now. tongue.gif I can't wait till he's able to get internet at home so we can chat for hours....

- Clare - age 5

"Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken."
- Elaine -age 5

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."
- Mary Ann - age 4

“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.”
Nikka - age 6

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones."
- Lauren - age 4

"Love is when mommy sees daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross."
- Mark - age 6

“Love is when my mummy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.”
Danny - age 7

My Mummy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss.”
Emily - age 8

“Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.”
Chrissie - age 6

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."
