CanadaIR1 / CR1 - Montreal Timeline to Interview
I've been away for a while and noticed several posts about the Montreal Consulate keeping people's originals. Of course at the border they would tell you the Consulate would never do that - it MUST be your fault somehow :)

We had our interview Feb 10th and were approved conditionally so our wait is going to be extended another two or three weeks at least. My wife's birth certificate was from Quebec and entirely in French. The documents that we just translated ourselves were approved by the USCIS and NVC ages ago so once again we find every agency just follows their own rules. The other issue was, again, even though it was explained that I never lived in the U.S. until 2009 and never even had an SSN until summer of 2008, and didn't earn one dime in the U.S. in 2008 he still wanted to see a tax filing even if it was all zeroes, again even though this was all explained in the documents sent to the NVC and already accepted and proves nothing towards whether I can support my wife or not. And even then if they want to be picky fine I'll supply the documents (we are, what choice do we have) what really irks me is that instead of patiently explaining exactly what was necessary and what needed to be done the guy just rushed us out of the booth and even though we were insistent about confirming some questions he just opened his door and made like the apocalypse was about to begin so we wouldn't bother him anymore and didn't even give us a chance to explain anything. He just took off.

The other people at the Consulate were nice but that one guy ruined our day. So we have to mail in the remaining documents and then as long as some other bureaucratic i doesn't need to be dotted or t crossed she should finally be getting her visa. Hopefully some of the originals we left with them will be returned to us so we don't have one more problem to worry about.

Yes, that's correct, reg IR1/CR1 pay NVC, DCF pays on interview day.

The "$" symbol next to fee payment says it means "Payment Received" on the next page but even that's a bit vague if you're paranoid :)

Thanks for the info everybody! Now I just need to check all my documents for the interview for the 17th time...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but there is no fee at the consulate for an IR-1 as that was included in your fees to the NVC. Only K-1's have a fee at the interview....

Okay that sounds right actually. I just wasn't sure. A lot of reviews I read even of IR-1 people mentioned paying a fee for something at the consulate I just assumed it was the visa fee. Is it for fingerprinting or something or am I just out to lunch?

I was wondering, does the Montreal consulate accept debit or credit cards for the visa fee (our IR-1 interview is Feb 10) or is it a cash only affair?

Oh thanks for that Pauley...
I just remember, my husband (USC) filed married filing jointly and I sent him all my income information -- copies of my T4s and what have you.
I believe I forgot to mention that in the earlier thread. We did get an ITIN number for and he got a significant deduction thus, tax refund for filing this way...
Just an FYI for you all...

I haven't filed yet and my wife's interview is just under two weeks away. I'd like to file right now but the IRS website says not to file for an ITIN if an SSN application is pending. Can I assume the SSN isn't actually applied for until after the IR1 visa is approved?

I am trying to figure out if I should get medical results couriered back to me or drive back up to Toronto and pick them up. Does anyone how long it takes to get them back by courier?

I was told I could get them within five days by courier when I made the appointment for the medical with Plexo in Montreal but when we got there I was told that they won't send the results by courier which is total B.S. but they told us we could pick them up any day before the interview so it wasn't that big a deal and it saves me 50 bucks to have them couriered anyway. I would prefer the peace of mind though to have them couriered to my wife so we have everything in hand well in advance of our interview.

Actually this has been something I've been wondering about too. We want to file jointly as the difference in the tax refund is substantial. As long as my wife gets her SSN within a couple weeks of moving here (sometime around end of Feb) I guess we should be fine. Does anyone know if it's an issue that she'll have received her SSN after 2009?

I know it's a dumb question but anybody on VJ receive a date for Feb yet? We were hoping to hear something/anything by Friday but here it is Thursday night and no news yet and as far as I can find anywhere nobody else has any good news from Montreal yet either. I know a few people at other consulates around the world have gotten dates but only crickets from Montreal so far...

Int, hate to say it, but a notice from USCIS wouldn't have anything to do with an interview date or work on your file. USCIS = DHS; NVC = DOS. Different departments. sad.gif

Oh well. When all you get is silence from Montreal you grab onto any sign you can that something is happening smile.gif This may be straying a bit off topic but does USCIS have anything to do with the case at all once the I-130 is approved and sent to NVC or are they completely out of the picture once the NVC takes over? Just curious.

CanadaIR1 / CR1 - Montreal Timeline to Interview
I'm hoping something is happening for us getting a date in January. Yesterday we received a "denial notice" e-mail (no details supposedly the details are in the notice in the mail that hasn't arrived yet) from USCIS regarding an I-824 I had submitted back in April. At first I freaked seeing the word "denial" confusing it with the I-864. I haven't had a chance to contact USCIS yet but I'm guessing it must be denied because the NVC already has our case info and is completed, which in itself is weird but whatever. It shouldn't affect our case and I'm hoping it's just a result of the Consulate getting ready to schedule a date for us next month. It means we wasted 340 bucks on the I-824 but at this stage in the game I really don't care.

Has anyone else gotten any notices in the last few days?

After going thru the wait for our interview, my educated guess would be that your chances of getting a Jan interview are likely slim.

DOWN with the dissenter!

protest6wz.gif

As much as I hate to agree with "the dissenter" he's very likely right. From what I've observed the last few months since our case was complete that has been the case. There is a sudden flood of interviews scheduled and then that's it. Crickets...

We're going to try a one month visit with my wife coming back with me from Ottawa. What is frustrating is that the practical reality is so far from the official reality. On the practical side she doesn't give two cents about her job and she's just staying with some good friends of ours for the short wait through to the interview and I'm basically paying for everything. No problem. The official reality, even though she's immigrating very soon, is that she needs to prove solid ties to a country she is leaving permanently in a very short time (very short compared to how long we've waited so far smile.gif ). It seems like a catch-22. You need to remain the CEO of a major Canadian corporation and own three housing projects right up until the very last day, then abandon it all, or they will grill the daylights out of you (depending on the POE and the officer you talk to of course - most are decent people just doing their job but some are downright a-holes on a power trip).

Sorry to be a downer but like trailmix said this isn't the optimism thread smile.gif After almost a year of this process I think we've earned the right to be just a wee bit bitter and vent a tad. End rant tongue.gif

It took forever to get past the busy signal and another 10 minutes or so on hold but I finally got through and was told pretty much the same thing, than Montreal isn't done scheduling yet. She told me with our completion date of Sep 24 there is a possibility (but no promises) we could get a January date this month. One thing I found odd is I was told (again) they don't do their scheduling until the second week but how can that be if people here on VJ have already gotten a date several days ago?

Well regardless what the numbers are (and I wouldn't be surprised by any of them being right smile.gif ) my wife will be pleased there is at least a better than 1% chance of getting a January date. On a completely unrelated topic I finally received an e-mail response from Montreal over a month after asking the question. Even then it was a canned response. Hopefully we'll have some good news to share for when I head back up to Ottawa (for what seems the 50th time now) for Christmas.

Hi all,

I went to have my medical done the other day, and was given Repevax to complete my required vaccinations. Upon looking at the Vaccination Documentation Worksheet, the "Td" box was checked rather than "Tdap". Is this a mistake? Will I have problems when I transfer my status?

P.S: Another box on the worksheet states I have "Varicella History", and the RESULTS section is marked "Vaccination History Incomplete" - "Applicant may be eligible for blanket waiver(s)". Does this mean I have more paperwork to fill out later?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi...

No...Td or Tdap are the same.

Hi... Sorry I confused you. My fiance had his interview last Jan.5, 2007. The interview was okay but he was not able to bring the police cert. from Singapore that did not arrive on time of interview. He was told to pay the visa fee and leave his passport. After 3 weeks ,we found out that our case was under review. It was a long story. After 11 months waiting , field investigation was done. Anyway we are still waiting for the final review/ result of CO there at USE.

My fiancee will be interviewing in Kiev soon for her K-1. A document from the embassy said she could receive the results of her medical examination at 3:00 pm of the same day she takes the examination. But I have also heard she has to take her medical examination 3 days in advance of her consular interview, apparently in order to give time for the medical results to be delivered to the embassy staff. Can someone clarify all this for me? Thanks!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionK-2 Interview & Translating Devices
Folks:

I have 2 questions. F

First, my fiancee has a small daughter who will be coming -- much to my delight and joy! Can anyone advise of the questions asked by the embassy regarding the children and the former spouses?

Second, I speak little Russian and my fiancee speaks little English, so we will need a hand-carried electronic translating device. Can anyone recommend a good one? I need something that can translate several sentences of text. It would help if it speaks, also.

Thanks for your time and advise!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. We do all seem to be from the same time frame. My NOA2 was on Aug. 26 and NVC receive date was Sept. 3 . It's the not knowing anything thats the hard part. We expect a certain amount of time to go from 1 to 2 but this wait comes out of nowhere and surprises you. I'll be checking 4-5 times a week like I'm sure you all do. I have sent 1 e-mail too with no response yet but didn't really think they would till they are done. Hope we all can get out of AP soon.

I do not know if its a time frame issue, I have a chat friend who has also filed a week earlier than I did. They already got the letter from the Embassy today, which means it passed through NVC very quickly. However my case seems different.

I received my NOA2 on Sept 11th, called NVC on sept 20 and got the case no. they assigned it and found out it is in AP. Called sept 21 to find out when they actually received my petition because I forgot the first time I called to ask. The lady would not give me any information, she said my name as the petitioner did not match the name of the petitioner that they had. My case was flagged for review by a supervisor and I was told to call back in 15 business days.

QUOTE (Stephen + Elisha @ Sep 15 2009, 02:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
No, you don't need all that. You're not mailing the I-134 to anyone; your fiancee will hand-carry it to the interview with her, and the consular officer will review it at that time. You will, however, need supporting documents for any income and assets listed on the affidavit.

Ok great. Now for this list of assets. I have very little in assets and income myself. My mother will be the primary supporter for my fiancee. The list of assets would be hers. Would the consular want to see last 6 months of bank statements and letter stating she is the owner and manager of a motel?

I assume the 3 years of tax returns would only be used for the i-864. I think it would be cumbersome if my fiancee takes those with her to the Consular during her interview.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionAffidavit of Support I-134 documents
I too found out that my petition was approved at the USCIS, which was Sept 11th.

Anyway I am preparing the Affidavit of Support, form I-134, and I will have to get a co-sponsor which my mom has agreed to be, because my income is below what is required.

So my question is, how I get the form filled out for the co-sponsor? Do I fill out a second I-134 and have it state that they will support my Fiancee on my behalf and where I state relationship to sponsor, would I write "Daughter in-law"?

Also I would love to see some examples of filled out item #11 in the I-134 because I am not sure how I should write my intentions of support?

Here is what I had written so far. I think this is fine but I am not sure what they want to see exactly:

"I will provide housing, money for food, clothing and transportation for as long as my fiancee needs. We will get married once she arrives in the US. We will be living together from then on. My mom, BLANK, intends to help support her financially until she acquires her green card."

Or should I say "support her financially until she finds a job"?

thanks

Hey we're neighbors!! Mind if I borrow a cup of sugar? I'm in the state just above you two, Virginia Beach, Va.smile.gif

Oh, those anticipated driving lessons...I'm having mine get his IDP, or international drivers permit so that he'll be legal and just about ready and set to go. The main thing I'm nervous about is 'his' nervousness about driving on the wrong side of the car 'and' (acording to him), the wrong side of the road. Additionally, he has to get used to driving an automatic which he's never in his life ever done. So his foot is going to have to get used to there not being a clutch. I can just imagine it when he drives over here for the first time....brrrrm-screech-brrrrm-screech-brrrrm-screech! Lol!

Most definately, It's going to be interesting for sure. But I still can't help but look forward to it. smile.gif

A cup of sugar? Anytime!

My fiancee was going to "learn to drive the car" before he goes to the interview lol. He lasted all of 1 lesson. It was really cute. I know how to drive a stick shift and I remember those days. Well apparently his instructor took him somewhere busy and he kept stalling the car. I think he was a little embarrassed to go back. I had to tell him my horror story which was much worse. I got stuck at the top of a hill in the middle of an intersection and like to never got the car cranked back because I was so nervous. Traffic was having to go around me in the intersection. It was traumatic lol, but I did eventually learn. He was very glad to hear that my car is not a stick shift. He's thinking about being a cab driver when he gets here lol...we will see how that turns out.

Ooooh this is an amazing thread....

Okay... a little background about me. The last time I actually drove a car was like maybe the day I passed my driving test, 12 years ago, back in my country! And I always had someone drive for me back home. When I got here, I know cars are like our legs, you basically can't go anywhere anytime without knowing how to drive. I need to get a job but I need to learn how to drive first. My mother-in-law offered me her old car (Buick, imagine that LOL) so I can drive and of course also to driver her around since my husband does not allow her to drive anymore.

So, I went to DMV and got my permit a few days ago! Yay!! kicking.gif Excited and nervous at the same time. My husband told me that he will teach since hiring an instructor is totally out of the question, too expensive. I am a little disappointed since I was looking forward to learn with an instructor and my husband is a very impatient person. I know he would yell at me whenever I make a mistake! Anyways, I have no choice but to accept the fact that he is going to be the one teaching me.

Today, before he left for work, he suggested that we go for a quick 15 minutes practice....Boy, I was nervous but I was more surprised! He was so patient and never did yell at me!! LOL... I made so many mistakes and was driving so slow but he was encouraging me the whole time. I tried to park but I did so bad!

Now that he is at work and the car is sitting outside, man I really feel the urge to grab the keys and practice on my own but I know I can't do that!! But then, I am so looking forward to my next lesson! Hehehe.....

By the way, anyone of you live in Charlotte, NC?

Cheers..

That's sweet your mother in law offered you her car. You can get a lot of practice and learn some valuable information from her, both about driving and your husband lol. You can strategically pry her for information about all the crazy and embarrassing things he did as a kid.

Instructors in NC are outrageous and the schedules are horrible for trying to go to their classes. At least around here. I live in The northern part of NC, about 4 hours from Charlotte. You are most likely better off with the personalized lessons you are getting now wink.gif

I'm glad your hubby is being patient. If today was only your first lesson for so long, I wouldn't worry too much about not being a great parker. That's kind of scary because you have to get so close to so many cars lol. I remember learning to drive and I was so nervous about parking. You will get better quick though, it's surprising how quick. There have been some great tips posted in this thread. I'm glad you found it now when you need it! My day to teach driving is coming up soon.

Horse,

Find a secluded area or drive down roads that are hardly traveled. If you live well outside of the city then there are plenty of those roads around. You can get some good driving experience there as well. There's always somewhere you can practice driving with very minimal distracts just to build your confidence. Police can't pull you over just because they want to, so as long as you are following the rules, not driving like a drunk person and in an area that's not too crowded you should be fine.

You may also be able to get a learners permit which gives you legal permission to drive with a licensed driver in the car and you can go anywhere you want. Check to see if your state has those.

Lol, I own Grand Theft Auto...at least my son does, he's already talking about how he intends to beat my fiancee at all those games, so maybe I can enlist my 13 year old to unknowingly help teach my fiancee to drive. It does sound like a good idea. It can't hurt, and I get the added enjoyment of listening to them playing. The bumper cars sounds good too, I'm certain he's never seen those and that could be a lot of fun as well. No point in stressing myself out, I don't want driving to turn into a bad experience.

I have OnStar and I also pay for roadside assistance through my insurance. My towing is only for 75 miles but that is more than I need, and I've used it before, it is actually a good plan. They pay for other things but I'm not sure what that is. I'm hoping I never have to use any of that lol. Just as any crazy person would, I also pay for a 3rd service through my cell phone carrier. So somehow, some way I think I'm covered for just about anything I can't already handle. My dad's best friend is a tow truck driver and my dad is a mechanic. Thank God for family lol.

It is actually easier driving really slow in India and stopping all the time for the cows, pedestrians, donkeys, dogs etc. My hubby complains when I put on the breaks a long distance from the stop signs or stop lights - I tell him, you cannot just step down on the breaks a couple of feet away when we are going 40 mph! I think he will do OK though, once he gets into the habit. He only practiced in India a few driving classes and it is totally different in India as we all know - no rules, driving in the middle of the street and turning to one side when cars approach from the other side, stopping for buffalo and goat herds, manual transmission, driving on different side of the road etc., etc. He never drove more than 10mph in India I am sure.

Lol, that actually scared me while I was there. People just stepping in front of the cars like they weren't there. Not sure why it scared me, we were moving so slow they probably wouldn't even have gotten bruised if we hit them lol. I guess it was just the thought of it. I did have a scooter hit my leg while riding on the back of his motorcycle. It didn't even hurt but was nerve wracking. I guess he's going to feel similar but for different reasons. I know he thinks my car is huge (I drive an HHR lol). I definitely will be teaching him the art of reverse driving in an empty parking lot in the middle of the night lol.

Hello ,

I guess the question is , does he know how to drive ? B, How comfortable is he driving on high speed .
What i did was , I got a international Licence before i came here . And then I Just look very carefully while my wife drove me for a week or so . The first step would be getting comfortable driving on the other side . Its hard to get an idea of the clear distance and the lanes Ur driving from the other side . So make him comfortable to drive on the other side . I started driving with in the second week . What we did was in the second week I drove my wife to do grocery shopping and she would tell me advance what i need to do next , Like who have the right away and how yield . In fact she keep telling me the little thing like round way thing , meaning how to enter the round ways while she was driving me . Stop for school bus and pedestrian . all these little things did made a lots of difference for me understanding the driving difference .
Driving on the freeway is different ball game . Speed is very important . I almost got a ticket in the second month of me being here for speed he he . so advice o that part is stay under the speed limit .
The biggest difference was driving a bike here . Their is a lots of respect for bikers which is totally different here .

I'm going to err on the side of caution and say no, he doesn't know how to drive. He's probably only done it once, not very far and since he gets nervous I know he had someone else take over. He recently went for driving lessons - for 2 days....in India. He was very happy to hear that that my car does not have a clutch pedal. I learned how to drive a manual and I actually don't think he did bad at all from the things he was telling me. He's very critical of himself.

Thank you for telling me your story. I find it quite helpful. I've already been looking around at where I can get him some short distance experience to help boost his comfort level. And I think I'm going to teach him about cruise control first lol.
