I think it landed on the wrong desk! Maybe mine will come back with an RFE at some point. I did not send my marriage cert. either. I did show ID in both names when I had my biometrics done and they verified my husbands name from the file on record with USCIS. I sent the standard requirements bank statements, credit cards in both names etc. Hopefully they will get your info soon and send you along ROC road for 6-7 months of waiting unless you get fortunate like a few others here. Good stuff !! Congrats. Yup now the waiting. I made a few copies of the extension letter. I keep one in my wallet with the green card given that the g/c is expired. Plus I have an extra one or two copies just in case. Looks like the May crew is starting to get approved. Been a while, hope you are well !

Thanks I hope your liking your job and enjoying life with your new family :) I am loving the weather here! My kids visit fairly frequently which is nice, if I'd moved to Toronto that wouldn't happen too often .

Thank you for the feedback guys! I was a little nervous about sending the confirmation for my address change since I did it on the late side; I didn't want to create problems... And I got my notice at my old address too

I requested the transcripts last night but I think I'll just send the returns. I have the transcript for our 2010 return, just not this last one.

Thank you again for your help!

On a side note I did not get a reminder to file for removal of conditions. Also, my green card was issued in my maiden name. I sent in my I751 with my married name and they sent my NOA1 and biometric appt. to me in my married name. I didn't send in the W2's with my tax returns just the returns that were done by a tax accountant.

Welcome to the long wait everyone Posted Image

Hi everyone! I'm getting my evidence ready, and just had a quick question: should I delay sending the forms in and wait for my tax transcript or can I send in my tax returns? The guide said it was preferable, but wanted to see what you guys had done.

Also, I sent in my address change notice about a month and a half ago. To this date, I haven't received any confirmation and neither has my sponsor. Should I include the copy of the forms and delivery confirmation from USPS in the package or not even bother with that?

Thank you for the help!

I never received a confirmation letter of my address change either. We sent in our tax returns. Posted Image

3. Memberships
4. Tax returns
5. Personal mail in both names
6.Joint home ownership
7. Insurance and beneficiary info

You could activate and turn right around - others have done it here. On the other hand, you could explain to the official what you are doing, show the letter from the IRS, and tell him you are not ready to move quite yet. It's up to you.

Really? I guess I could give it a try...
Then again, if our accountant says not to worry b/c I'll have a SSN soon, then that would be VERY cool:-)

I'm curious - why did you receive a letter from the IRS?

We only brought my husband's passport and two photocopies (the ones to be notarized).

They sent me a letter b/c of my request (well, the request of our U.S. accountant actually) to get an ITIN...
The IRS letter states I can't get one until I sent a notarized copy of my passport:-)

It *has* to be a certified copy from Passport Canada (pain in the ####### to get) or a notary. Sounds like a trip to Bellingham is in order!

At the same time - why don't you just wait to move and get your SSN? You don't need an ITIN once you've received your SSN.

Ooohhh...really??? Maybe that would work!
BUT on the letter the IRS sent me (it was addressed to me, not my husband the USC), it says I have 45-days from the date of the letter (it's already been 30 days since receiving it)...and we're not moving to the States until end of December/beginning of January...

On the IRS letter, it says "foreign notaries are acceptable if they attach an apostille"...so I'm assuming if you got it notarized in the states, that's NOT a foreign notary and you did not need an apostille...?

Also, if you don't mind me asking (SORRY FOR THE THREAD HIJACK!), did you have to bring anything else with you...or just your passport...?

Thanks!

The IRS won't accept a notary from Canada as they are not a part of the Hague Agreement. We actually drove to Bellingham to get a US notary to sign off on my husband's passport. The apostille would mean that you'd have to get a certified copy of your passport from Passport Canada but it was a pain to do.

So, do you think just sending in a copy of passport with neither notarization nor certification from Passport Canada will be useless...?
Wow, now I guess I have to plan a trip to Bellingham...they REALLY don't make this easy do they? :-)

She also needs to file for an ITIN (a tax ID number) for you.

Oh, and I meant to mention our experience with this as well...
The accountant in the U.S requested one for me (I'm the Canadian citizen), but we ended up getting a request from the IRS that I mail back a copy of my Canadian passport to prove my foreign status...
They actually asked that it be notarized with an "apostille," but I guess they don't do "apostilles" in Canada...they do something similar, but it seems like a huge pain and expense...
So I'm just having my photocopy of my passport notarized and sending that in...
Anywaaaaay, point is...you amy want to include this off the bat when you ask for a tax id number...

we are working on enrolling our children in a homeschool program in Oregon and also checking into a rental agreement that would give us some paperwork before the interview but begin tenancy on February 1st. if we can't find such a rental agreement then we will have her parents draw up a rental/tenancy agreement for us at their address. Hopefully something like this will work.

I'm curious if anyone has experience being rejected for not having the IRS transcripts for filing late. trying to measure my chances a bit.

Hi there,

Just thought I'd let you know my/our experience...
My husband (the US citizen) also hadn't lived in the States for YEARS and hadn't been filing taxes.
We had his accountant in the U.S. do the past three years of his taxes, which he did in about a week, then he overnighted them to us for us to sign.
Then we overnighted them to the IRS.
(we also had only about five weeks from the time we got our letter to our interview date)
He requested a transcript or receipt or whatever it's called from the IRS to prove that we actually filed the returns, BUT it didn't come in time.

So, for my interview in Montreal, I just took copies of the past three years of taxes that the accountant had prepared and filed. I was fully expecting the guy interviewing me to ask for some sort of proof from the IRS that we'd filed, but he never did. (YAY!)
So, I would think, chances are, you WON'T be asked for this and you should just bring copies of your past three year's of returns. (Again, though, you're right in saying it's kind of up to each individual officer...)

However, even if they DO ask for an official IRS transcript or receipt or whatever, chances are, they would just ask you to mail it in when you get it. It would definitely delay your case, but your trip to Montreal would not have been wasted...

Okay, now as for proof of domicile...
The guy who interviewed me basically approved me/us based on an official lease (downloaded from the Internet) that both my in-laws and us signed as an agreement to live with them and pay rent and utilities etc...
I had some other stuff for proof of domicile (my husband's valid US driver's license, a joint US account opened here, a copy of the MLS listing agreement with our real estate agent to sell our place, U Pack moving quote...)...
But we were approved based on just TWO items: this lease with his parents AND a job offer letter for my husband.
So I suggest you bring proof of your ability to continue working in the US... maybe letters from clients or companies ? and also a lease, either for your own place or at your in-laws....
(everything else is good too! but I would make sure you have these two items as well:-))

Good luck!

CanadaHotel Reviews Montreal
I just got back last night from Montreal (stayed two nights at a hotel, and three with a girlfriend of mine)...
I stayed at Hotel L'Appartement on Sherbrook Street West... Hotel L'Appartement
It's right across from the Hilton Garden Inn and a Marriott.
It was definitely not the Ritz, but nice and clean and close to the consulate ( and pretty much everything else!) -- about an 8 minute walk -- and it has free Wi-Fi and free breakfast in the mornings.
I'm pretty sure all the rooms have little kitchens (mine did) which is nice to put some wine for celebrating (or drowning your sorrows) after your interview:-)
I think I paid about $120 a night... (For some reason, when I was looking for a hotel, I couldn't find any of the uber cheap deals everyone else seems to huh.gif I think maybe I just waited to late to book or something....)
Staff were friendly... no complaints here! I'd recommend it... unless you want/need something a little fancier :-)

The Woking site lists what vaccines you need...
This should take you to that page on their site:

(if not, go the site, and on the upper left-hand side you'll see a drop-down list...click on "Vaccines"...)

Once you're on the page, scroll down, and they break it up into age categories... So, not sure what age you are but for example, I'll copy and paste some of the categories from the page:

19-26 YEARS
Tdap (Adacel) **See note below
MMR Measles, Mumps, Rubella. ("MR" and "MM" are not enough). You need MMR
HPV - Females only. See note below
Varicella - If you had "Chicken Pox" disease, no vaccine is needed

Sucks! LOL, oh well. My interview will be in Montreal. How much advance notice do they give you prior to the interview to get your medical done? Is it possible to get the medical done in Vancouver, then fly to Montreal for the interview?

My interview date was set about five weeks after I got my letter...
The next day I scheduled an appointment for the next week with my doctor to get any vaccines I needed (for Vancouver medicals, you need to have all your vaccines done prior to the medical...or, at least have proof you've had all the required ones...)...
Once I had my vaccines I used the "book an appointment" form on the Woking website and when it asked for the best date (I think they only do them on Wednesdays) I just put "asap"...
I was scheduled in the following week!
So, you should have time, it should be fine:-)

Maybe in the meantime, while you wait for your letter, you can get whatever vaccines you need, or at least get proof of the ones you have...

Good luck!

CanadaIs it easier to Immigrate to Canada or the US?
Thank you for all your replies. I was looking at the process of sponsoring him to come to Canada and it says I have to be able to support him for 3 years after he immigrates...what does that mean exactly? Can he not help with our marriage financially at all or..? I would not be able to support us both if I am the only one financially contributing to the marriage. I haven't come across anything that seems to say he has to show that he can support me for 3 years should I go to the states (although he can.) Is that only applicable to Canadian immigration?

CanadaIs it easier to Immigrate to Canada or the US?
Hi there,

I just have a quick question. Me and my fiancee (who is American, I am Canadian) are trying to decide whether or not to live in Canada or the States once we marry and apply for a green card. I was just wondering if the process is easier for him to come to Canada or for me to get an American green card? Obviously we want to be apart for the least amount of time possible after our wedding.

Thanks!

CanadaLiving together during the application process? visiting?
Hi guys! I'm really confused as to whether or not me and my fiancee can live together in Canada, while I await my American Cr-1/IR-1 Visa (once we get married of course.) So, this is our sitution.
We are lucky to live in border towns and each have a NEXUS card. I live and work in Canada, and he lives and works in the states. Now, once we are married, would he be able to come and live with me temporarily (the limit is 6 months I belive?) until I get my Visa? He would be keeping his place down there, so we have somewhere to move to. He would also be keeping his job down there, which would also mean he would be crossing the border and back 5 days a week (I dont know if that would be a problem for him?)
Are we able to do this, or would I be denied my visa because we were living together? He would be moving back to his permanent residence as soon as the 6 months are up, and then we would just be living together in his US residence on weekends when we both are not working.
Or is this risky and it is better for him to keep living in the States, me in Canada, and then just visit on weekends until I get my Visa?
Thanks!!

CanadaLiving together during the application process? visiting?
Me and my fiancee are a little bit confused as to whether or not we can live or even visit eachother during the application process. He is American and I am Canadian. Once we are married, and start the process are we able to live together in Canada until I get my American Green Card? I didn't think this was possible, but was just reading some timelines on VJ and came across a couple that went that route. They just had to prove that they had an american residence to go back to, and that he was already employed in the states. Also, if not...can we at least visit eachother? I keep reading conflicting information. Some places say only he can visit me in Canada, some say we can't visit at all, and some say we can both visit eachother but I just may be turned away at times when trying to enter the states. Please help! Thanks everyone!

Hi bearbear,

I was checking the website around 9am, Vancouver time. The website had been shut down for maintenance, so I set my alarm for when they said it would come back online. It was late coming back up, but when it did come back online I refreshed for about 1/2 an hour and voila!
