CanadaFax or Mail...and Fax Machines...
I was lucky to go through Vancouver and I faxed them 6 pages. My DS-230 Part 1, the checklist, attachments and cover letter. I put my name and case number on every single sheet. They got it just fine. :)

Don't forget to put your case number and name on your attachments. I also signed and dated my attachments just in case.

CanadaDr. Seidens medical tomorrow
First come first serve. So show up at 7 and you'll be the first in line to get everything done (x-ray, blood drawn and seeing a doctor). :)

I lived in downtown Toronto so I can't help you regarding the commute. But generally I think there won't be much congestion that early in the morning.

CanadaI got my Approval Notice!!!!
Okay, here's what to expect next.

1. CSC will forward the approved petition to NVC. CSC tends to "bulk" send approvals and it can take a week or so before NVC receives it.

2. NVC will "process" the approved petition and will assign a case number and forward it to the consulate. You're in Alberta so it will go to Vancouver (lucky!!). It takes only a day or so for NVC to process and send off. About 5-7 days for Vancouver to receive it and enter into the system. Mel will receive a notice from NVC but it usually comes well after the case is already at the consulate. You can follow up with NVC in a week or so to see if they received the petition or not. You will need to either email them or speak to a live person there to get your case number.

3. Vancouver will send you packet 3 (see attached checklist) along with medical info: http://www.visajourn...h...ost&id=3687 The letter that comes with it is usually what is needed at the medical because it has your NVC case number and name on it.

4. Once they get your DS-230 (part 1) and checklist by fax, they will assign you an interview date right away and mail you packet 4 (interview letter) within a few days. I asked for "soonest available appointment" and it was about 1 month from receipt of my checklist to interview. :) You do not have to have the medical done prior to sending them the checklist.

And that's it! PM me if you have any more questions.

CanadaACTIVATED THE VISA
Congrats!

Since you're also a K3, feel free to check out my AOS/EAD checklist that I linked in my signature. Some of the things weren't required I'm sure but I threw it in anyway. I haven't received my NOA1 yet but should be any day now. Hopefully no RFEs either!

Welcome to the K3 AOS & EAD waiting list! :)

CanadaMore questions... passport photos
No, get US passport sizes for all: 2" x 2". The medical office can scale down if they want to.

CanadaHow reliable is Canada Post's tracking system?
The tracking system is weird sometimes. I remember tracking an envelope from another province to Ontario and after it arrived, the status finally showed up online saying it was in transit... Good job Canada Post! :P

Canada(K3 visa question)Can I write Vancouver as the consulate office although I live in Toronto?
I transferred after the case was already at Montreal. Got approval from Vancouver by phone and email.

Cassie is right that it's not as easy as just asking. They are getting wise to people wanting to transfer for faster interviews and you need to give them a valid reason why you're requesting the transfer and also an address out west. How do I know they're getting wise to it? Because they told me so when they asked me the reason for the transfer and my address out west.

Canada(K3 visa question)Can I write Vancouver as the consulate office although I live in Toronto?
Yeah, I had my case transferred and I don't regret it for a minute. At first I thought maybe it would slow down Vancouver but when I went for my interview that day, there were only 3 K applicants including me. They slot 4 K applicants per day so they had an empty spot that day anyway. :) Not to mention the cost involved with us flying out there for the interview and hotel costs. I flew from Toronto to Van and he flew in from VA. Expensive, but worth every penny. :)

Canada(K3 visa question)Can I write Vancouver as the consulate office although I live in Toronto?
Yeah, back a few years ago Montreal was MUCH faster. A friend of mine (who actually directed me to VJ!) came on a K1. If she had taken the first interview date given to her by Montreal (she asked for a date a few months after), it would have only taken her 4 months from filing to visa in hand.

Canada(K3 visa question)Can I write Vancouver as the consulate office although I live in Toronto?

My thought when I read this was --- why move to Vancouver just to get an earlier interview date? It only makes a month or two difference (and if I am wrong on the timeframe, please tell me :) ). Anyways, if you're filing the Cr-1, Montreal is your only option, no matter what.

For me, the few extra months apart (4-5 months I think) would have been torturous, so I transferred. :) I think if I didn't transfer I would probably not have gotten an interview until July or August. Ugh.

But for the OP, everyone is correct... the CR-1 is ONLY through Montreal.

I remember you mentioning that you sold your house in Canada (I think it was you). Can you use your assets to bump up the support?

CanadaMedicals...
Dr. Seiden's in Toronto DID NOT give me a genital exam. In fact, they barely gave me an exam at all. They marked down that everything was fine despite their lack of exam.

I don't think you can bypass it but you can probably request that a woman does it. I'm pretty sure all they would do is look to see if there's any obvious problems like sores or something.

BTW, even if you are not sexually active you should get an annual gynecological exam to check for any abnormalities like cervical cancer.

Canadaa new question.....I think anyways

With K3 do you get AP right away once you're allowed to stay in the U.S.??

K3s are multiple entry, good for 2 years. No need to apply for AP.

Canadaa new question.....I think anyways

Well, our wedding was April 21 in CT. My husband's family traveled with us up to New Hampshire a couple days later to spend more time with us and see our house. My MIL became very ill and was hospitalized for 5 days (long story, but suffice it to say this last week was the week from HELL). Anyway, she has been stabilized enough to travel back to Canada to receive services from her regular doctor that will be fully covered insurance wise. My husband had wanted to travel back to BC with his parents to offer support and assistance as they traveled, but couldn't because he did not have AP. So, I drove them to Montreal yesterday, let my husband out at a small town on the Vermont - Canada border where he killed 5 hours waiting for me to get back from dropping my in-laws at the airport.

I'm sorry to hear that too. I hope she gets better soon and that this rough patch is over soon.

AP is one of the 2 reasons why we filed K3 instead of K1.
misaFemaleCanada2007-04-30 12:02:00
Canadaa new question.....I think anyways

As Canadians we oftentimes have become too complacent about our relationship with the border. This shoudl serve as a reminder on how complicated the border really is...

Quoted for emphasis. I know that when we decided to get married I had no idea that we'd have to go through the same immigration process as someone from say... Norway (I just picked a random country).

This is pretty much what they'll do except you'll be lying down:

Just the same breast exam you'd get at an annual. Just checking for lumps. Takes 2 mins, that's it.

Heh, I didn't give a sample either. All Dr. Seiden's office did was:

- blood for HIV & syphilis
- chest x-ray
- verbal questions
- minor physical exam which consisted of a breast exam and looking at my feet (why, I don't know)

That's it. They didn't even weigh me. They asked ME to tell them my weight and height.

Now I feel ripped off!

CanadaDr Weiner Ottawa

I'm going for my medical this week in Toronto at Dr. Seidens ... does anyone know if they will take blood from my 8 year old?? ... I'm assuming so ... he just likes to be prepared for these kind of things. Thanks for the info on the eyeglasses .. I use a pair for night driving so I don't readily think about them. I'll bring them just in case.

I think they'll probably take blood from him.

BTW, at Dr. Seiden's, they didn't do an eye exam on me, just asked if I wore contacts. God, they really didn't give me much of an exam! I could have had a raging case of chlamydia and they wouldn't have known it. :P

CanadaInterview & Medical
Vancouver's great to deal with. I posted my consulate review and it's linked in my signature.

Tell your fiance when he goes to the consulate not to expect U.S. flags outside of it. There isn't any! Very discreet, non-descript building. The entrance/visa line is to the right side of the building. K visas don't have to line up, just have him tell the security guard that he's there for a K visa appointment and show his interview letter and passport.

He should also be prepared for the dirty looks that others waiting in line will give him. :P

CanadaPolice Check while not in Canada
Weird! I always thought/read that police checks you could only get in person or from abroad through RCMP only. Good to know!
misaFemaleCanada2007-04-09 17:45:00
CanadaPolice Check while not in Canada
You have to apply yourself. Best to get it done in person while you are in Canada.

If you apply outside of the country, you'll need to submit fingerprints done by the local police and file with the RCMP which takes forever to do.

CanadaRescheduling Interview

that was roundtrip, buying tickets the same day of travel is usually more $$$$, there are websites that one supposedly can get better last minute deals, but usually they are to more popular/bigger cities.

Yep, I've done that before... Same day one-way flight from RIC to YYZ cost me about $500 one time. A pre-booked roundtrip is usually $350-500.
