CanadaLong Form Birth Certificate
It's required at the consulate level. They will not accept just a short form, only the long form for all applicants.

Asamu, you need a reason and and address out west. Examples: Visiting a family member for "a while", working out west for "a while". Be aware that Vancouver needs to accept your case and it seems they are getting wise to people transferring for faster interviews. You'll need to contact both consulates to ensure the transfer takes place properly (Montreal sat on mine until a staff member at Vancouver contacted them personally).

I am almost positive it was here... maybe back in November? I'm sure it was somewhere here. Maybe riblet remembers?

That's thing the thing, they should give accurate answers instead of just making stuff up to get people off the phone... If they just said, "I'm sorry, we're extremely overloaded at this time", I think people would understand.

Wasn't there a case of one person here who was told their interview date over the phone and it turned out the person at the consulate just said that to get them to go away?

I suppose they need to conduct the interview so they can verify it's actually a real person through in-person meeting matching with the photographs supplied as well as taking biometrics.

I guess since that verification is done already, there's less work for USCIS to do during the AOS stage for those transferred to CSC and approved without an interview as far as verifying the person (aside from the AOS biometrics appt).

I really feel for those who had/have to go through Montreal. I know I am extremely fortunate that I didn't. Even when I was going through the transfer I got misinformation from the Montreal consulate over the phone. They only acted on the transfer when someone at the Vancouver consulate personally emailed them and cc'd me to initiate the transfer.

If you can by any means possible transfer to Vancouver, do it!

CanadaCanadian bank accounts & credit cards
Ugh... student loans. I'll change that address to my sister's addy in Toronto. I'll just pay them through online banking like I do now. Mine is also with CIBC, just the federal though. The provincial one was paid off a few years ago though the federal one is the huge one.

I still have a Toronto phone number since I use Vonage. I just took the router/adapter with me when I moved and plugged it into the network here.

Ah, maybe I will keep the address at my sister's but I'll definitely notify them that I'll be using in VA. Thanks guys!

For my bank account, I'll just tell them I'm here in the U.S. "for a while".

I haven't changed my address with my Canadian bank account and credit cards. I have mail forwarding on all my mail to go to my sister's house in Toronto. Any advantage or disadvantage to changing to my U.S. address? Any problems I might encounter?

Canadaland POE w/ drivers license and b.cert
I wouldn't come up with your BC and your driver's license but I do hope you're bringing all your K1 paperwork with you because if you get pulled into secondary, you can show you're doing things the legal K1 way (instead of skipping across the border and staying) and that you are sooooo close to completion since your case is at the consulate.

CanadaNE one brought a child with them to US? Does child attend interview in Mtl?
Amanda Lise brought her 2 kids to the interview in Montreal. Haven't seen her on lately. She's probably swamped in AOS paperwork. :P

Canadalate in the game (long post)
Definitely too stressful. I sleep better at night knowing we did everything by the book. When it comes time for my AOS interview (whenever I get my ### in gear and actually file it!) I know I won't be stressing out (too much) because I didn't try and skirt the system.

Canadalate in the game (long post)
As others have stated, someone can visit but they need to bring proof of ties to their home country. I visited every 3 weeks before I got my visa and didn't encounter problems. I always had a ton of paperwork with me though.

Also, one can definitely enter the U.S. with intent to marry, just not into to marry and STAY. Nothing wrong with coming to get married.

CanadaDoes this mean were closer to NOA2?
Kimm, it's one step closer. It'll take a few days to get to VSC and you'll get a notice when it's entered into the system. Then, if VSC is still processing quickly, an approval should come around 30 days or so. I went through Vermont too. Click on my full timeline to see the dates of transfers, etc. (I put it in the comments section). Bear in mind that when I filed, we hit two major U.S. holidays (U.S. Thanksgiving and Xmas) but I was still approved fairly quickly. :)

CanadaPacket 3 from Montreal - Contents?

Hmm.. are they supposed to be checked off though? If I don't have them but checked them off anyway just to get ahead in line, I would feel like I was being dishonest and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that at all. :S Hopefully I can just get everything by the time I get the checklist. Unless it is just to say ''I know that I need that and I am going to do it as soon as possible"

Just ensure that you have all those items you check off to bring in on the day of the interview. Send the checklist and whatever else Montreal requests right away.

Im guessing for the following which don't apply to me, I would just write N/A next to it instead of checking it ?

5. Evidence in lieu of birth cert (I have my birth certificate)
8. Court and prison records (Never been to court or prison)
9. Military Record (Not in the army)
10. Divorce and Death Certificates (Was not married before my current husband)
12. Documents for accompanying child/children (I have no children)

Do I need to write why it is N/A like above, or N/A is sufficient ?

I wrote N/A in big letters covering the checkbox when I went through Vancouver. I don't think it's a requirement either but I did it just to make sure they knew those things don't apply to my case.

CanadaProblems with former employer
Hi Amanda-Lise. Sorry to hear about your former employer. Have you spoken to someone directly in payroll? When I quit my job, I talked to the payroll manager directly and they ended up direct depositing my last pay cheque for me instead of getting a cheque.

CanadaPotential joint sponser issues
One thing that I'm not sure you're aware of this but the 10 year thing isn't until you submit the I-864 during Adjustment of Status after she enters on a K1. To get her to the U.S. you'd be filling out the I-134 at the consulate level for her interview. The I-134 is only binding for 3 years and just ensures that she won't be a public charge or apply for welfare and food stamps during that time.
misaFemaleCanada2007-04-11 16:54:00
CanadaPotential joint sponser issues
Here's a plan. Why don't you let your father assume she's going to become a USC eventually and not really tell him that she's not going to.

After she adjusts status, it will still take a few years before she's eligible.
misaFemaleCanada2007-04-11 14:34:00
CanadaHow long...
It only takes about 2-5 days for DHL to deliver to Montreal (or Vancouver) from the NVC. The thing is that your case could sit there for a little while before the consulate enters it into their system as "received" and mails you out your packet 3.

Also when NVC says it was sent out to the consulate, it means they put it in the mailroom. So it could also sit at the NVC mailroom for a day or so.

Are you the Canadian or the USC? A K1 is only good for single entry. Not sure how that would work with advance parole.

CanadaList of Canada/US POE's that issue EA stamps
What about having this as a general POE land crossing thread with the following including "harassment level"? I know that the VJ timelines list harassment level but it only has airports and CDN/US Border and doesn't specify exactly where.

- Visa
- POE
- EA Stamp (if applicable)
- Date
- Harassment level
- Duration (at POE)

Thoughts? I don't mind helping to maintain it.

CanadaCanadian Tax Software
I called the International Tax Office regarding mine since I was a resident of Ontario at the end 2006 (I only moved here a few weeks ago). They told me that I file my return as normal and send to the regular Sudbury address for my 2006 taxes. I would have to do it different for my 2007 taxes though and also indicate on it when I left the country.

I ended up using Quick Tax Web ($20 Cdn) to calculate everything and save to a PDF. I refilled out the T1 Schedule with the figures generated though since it wouldn't let me put "US Citizen" for my spouse in the SIN field. I affixed the sticker with my old address on it but crossed out that address and put in my new U.S. address since I think my package said to do that (I put it away now, I can't remember exactly). Mailing it off Monday so hopefully it'll be fine. My taxes aren't complicated. Just one T4, a T5 and interest paid on student loans, that's it.

Well, I left my taxes too long so I'm going to purchase a tax program online and netfile.

Question... does anyone know if the available software packages like Quick Tax accomodate U.S. addresses? I would think they do but I'd like to know for sure before I purchase! :P

CanadaFiling AOS on Monday
I was going to send in EAD separately but after reading a few accounts in the Working/Travelling Prior to Greencard forum, it looks like people who filed separately aren't getting approved. Decided to buckle down and just get all the paperwork together and send it off at the same time.

Denise, I hope you get something regarding your EAD soon! It's already been 2.5 months!
