CanadaSo what's the deal with Federal Student Loans?
Not sure what will happen if you don't pay. You'd default on it and whenever you do go back to Canada, you'd get dinged for it. Even though the loans are through the bank, they can "return" it to the government (Federal or Provincial or both depending on what loans you have) and then the government will start collection proceedings against you. They'll catch you since they have your SIN on file and I have heard that can take you to court (not sure how plausible that is).

This is what happened when CIBC ###### up my Provincial (Ontario) loan. They returned it to the government saying that I defaulted even though I didn't! But once it was back with the Ontario government, it was too late. As far as CIBC was concerned, they closed my case. I was sent to collections and put through the wringer due to the bank's mistake. Paid it off though... so I just have my Federal.

Anyway, I called CIBC today and just gave them my sister's address in Ontario. I decided not to bother to change my address to my U.S. one.

CanadaSo what's the deal with Federal Student Loans?
Hey Canucks!

I have only my Federal Student Loan left with CIBC. My Ontario one was paid off a few years ago.

I remember reading a few posts saying that if you move out of country, they'll penalise you or ask for the whole amount or something? I can't find my original loan papers (they're in storage) and they are years old. I got my loans from 1994-1998.

Anyway, as per usual, the jerkoffs* at CIBC think I didn't pay this month even though I did (I pay online each month, over the minimum required and am not on interest relief) so I need to call them. All my mail is forwarded to my sister's address in Ontario. Just was curious if I told them that I moved to the U.S. whether that would be detrimental to my "account" with them.

Thanks!

*They're jerkoffs because they totally screwed me up on my Ontario loan years ago.

CanadaInterview letter delayed in mail & missed the interview!!!
Also when you call the consulate tomorrow (2 p.m. EST!), write down notes from the conversation, time and get the name of the person you are speaking to. Not sure if they give out last names (they might not) but get at least their first name. Document everything. If emailing them later, mention the previous phone conversations you had on <insert date and time> with <name of staff person> regarding <specifics of your case>. You want everything well laid out in written communication with the consulate and your congressperson.

If I were you, I'd contact my congressperson tomorrow after speaking to Montreal. Then you can lay it all out for them as to what Montreal's response was.

Oh man, that really really sucks. The only thing you could do is contact Montreal and explain that he only *just* got the interview letter due to mishaps with the postal service in his building.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I'm not really sure what to expect from the consulate in Romania. I guess find out exactly when the NVC is transferring your case and then call Romania a week later to see if it got there. They can tell you what to expect next or an interview date.

That's weird if it is only for 6 months because USCIS considers them good for 1 year when you file for AOS (from a K visa).

Didn't this also happen to another Canadian VJer recently? I wonder why they didn't tell you this when your case was at the NVC and you first submitted the I-864?

Sorry to hear about the setback but once you get a cosponsor, you'll be good to go!

CanadaHotel Abri du Voyageur
If you don't smoke, you could look up hotels on www.hotwire.com to get some great deals. I mention the smoking because you can't specify and you only know the hotel name and exact location after you book it. It does tell you the star rating though and area.

I think it has to state that you are relocating due to marriage or you will not be eligible to receive EI.

Here's the part about relocation for a spouse (fiance's count) but your ROE should say something like "relocation due to marriage". Marriage and relocation (or moving) are the key words here. I believe some K1s have requested their ROE to say "relocation due to intended marriage" or something like that.

http://www.hrsdc.gc....3_3.shtml#6_3_3

Just "moving" is not "just cause" to quit your job and be eligible for EI. I'm not sure how picky the out of claims office is but you're going to need to provide photocopies of your K1 and I-94 so they'll know that you did move for marriage.

You might want to call the claims office about this though to clarify if your ROE is going to be a problem.

EI is employment insurance through Canada.

http://www.hrsdc.gc....nu/eihome.shtml

If you are relocating due to marriage, you are eligible to receive employment insurance after you move to the U.S. K1s and CR-1/IR-1 visa holders are eligible. K3s are only eligible if they have an EAD. Canada requires that you are willing & able to work while you claim your benefits. K3s are not employment authorised so they are not "able" to work while in the U.S. until their EAD.

CanadaSOOO why leave Canada than???
Heh, you're from hippie land. ;)

Actually I've only been to B.C. once for my K3 interview and we loved it. I was born and raised in Toronto but we decided that when we come back we'll settle in B.C. I've been to the east coast (NFLD) and I loved it there too.

I think we're the friendliest bunch around too. My husband thinks it's weird when I chat with Canadian government employees or people in billing or whatnot for all my old Canadian bills/accounts. I was on the phone with the EI lady and we were talking about the summer, differences in Canadian/U.S. bureaucracy, vacations, etc. He thought it was weird... I told him, that's just what we do... we're friendly and we chat!

I think the "rightest" of right thinkers in Canada are still left of most "leftists" here in the US..

Just my bias though

That's my perception as well. So I should probably state that I'm left of left in Canadian terms? ;)

Sometimes it's easier to bite your tongue than to be branded as a "Hippy", "Liberal" "Socialist" or a "trouble maker". Sometimes it is just turn the other way and try to walk away from the imminent car crash that will take place.

Don't believe me? Check out OT sometime :)

Which is why most of us stay out of OT. ;)

EI is something Canadian specific. It's employment insurance and those of us that came over to the U.S. on marriage based visas are eligible to receive unemployment benefits from Canada (provided that we are work authorised, K3s are not without an EAD).

CanadaOn-line Interview Scheduling

Last week coming back from the dog park, the radio had on some head honcho dude from USCIS and they were talking about Immigration. In the future (didnt say how long into future) they would like to make it an almost paperless transaction! One could email stuff in and get the required stuff emailed back to you. As well they talked about how certain visas people had to do biometrics a few times, and they wanted it done to one for everyone. Was interesting to listen to.

Is this when we will also have flying cars? :P

Seriously though, they only just came out with change of address online last year! A friend of mine works for DHS as a programmer and she has commented on how antiquated they are as far as technologies. She works on some of the NEXUS stuff.

Same for all U.S. consulates around the world. You can't schedule your own interview date with them.

Those are probably only for things that are pretty cut and dry like TNs or J-1s or something.

Even though K visas are technically "non-immigrant", they are treated much differently since the intent after entry (or at least it should be!) is to adjust status.

Sort of on topic... differences between Canada Post and USPS! Well, we all know that Canada Post sucks... but I just discovered that addresses with apartments are done differently here in the U.S. Example... 123 Street Avenue, Apt. 456

Canada Post: 456-123 Street Avenue - apartment number first, then street number
USPS: 123-456 Street Avenue - street number first, then apartment number

Glad that I never short-formed my address here and just wrote it out like, "123 Street Avenue, Apt. 456", or I never would have gotten any mail!

I did. I actually researched and work to get on a TN status just to get to the US. I was quite misserable in Canada, I never enjoyed living there and there wasn't a lot there that I actually felt worthwhile. Plus I had visited many times all over the country (49 states) and a lot of my friends were American. So I got my degree, got a job, got the TN and moved for the sole purpose to hopefully one day, become a citizen as I had no intention of every going back to Canada other then to visit maybe once a year if that.

Your case is a little different though since you adjusted from a TN. I think for the majority of the Canadian K1s, K3s and CR-1/IR-1 applicants we would not have moved here if not for our fiances/spouses and their individual circumstances (e.g., better for the USC's career to stay here or because their children are here, etc.).

If my marriage ended, I'd be back in Canada in a heartbeat. I'm sure as hell not here for a greencard... I made way more money (even after converting CDN > USD) at the job that I left to be here than I'll ever make in the U.S. :P

Should be okay if you have the proper permits:

Firearms and Ammunition
Firearms and ammunition are subject to restrictions and import permits. The importation of fully automatic weapons and semi-automatic assault-type weapon is prohibited. Generally, firearms and ammunition acquired abroad may be imported, but only under permit. For complete information, write to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Department of the Treasury, Firearms and Explosives Import Branch, Washington, DC 20226. That agency will furnish permit applications and answer inquiries about the Gun Control Act of 1968.

You can call or email the NVC with your case number and ask if they received the case and assigned a case number yet. If so, they'll give you the case number and tell you when they sent it out to the consulate. Then with that case number you can email Vancouver and ask if they received the file and if so, when they sent out the paperwork.

For NVC, you need to speak to a live person or email them. For K visas, your case number will NOT be available by punching it in with a touch tone phone.
