Re: Insurance. My husband had to submit photocopies of my Ontario health card and my previous Sun Life coverage through my old job as well to prove I had health insurance before too. He says it's called "creditable coverage" so that nothing can be considered a pre-existing condition if it's discovered later. Something like that. I sort of blank out when he talks about health insurance. :P

Yes, I'd move back. Definitely. We've talked about sometime in the future settling in B.C. (I'm from Toronto).

So far the only thing I really like here is my husband, the rent (way cheaper than what I used to pay, but that's only because of this city) and the postal system. Oh and ordering stuff online without it getting stopped by customs at the border and dinged for duty charges. :P

Warlord, your case is a little different than ours though since you actively sought to move and didn't move for a fiance/spouse.

I quit as soon as we knew I'd be moving south rather than hubby moving north. Its been over 4 years now :D

Reba, congrats! :) I quit once for 9 months but it was for monetary reasons. I really *should* quit before you know, signs show up that I'm a heavy smoker...

I switched to Canadian Classics when I was back home going through K3- they were cheaper that DuMaurier.

I did that too when I'd run out of the American Spirits I'd bring back on visits since I only brought back a carton at a time. At first the Canadian Classics were pretty bad but I got used to them. They were $2-$3 cheaper than other brands!

Thanks for the link. Those really cheap "generic" and "value" cigarettes look kind of scary. I mean, how good could they be at $10-15 a carton? :P

Am I going to get eggs thrown at me if I say that I smoke Cuban minis? Mind you, this isn't even regularly, but it's the only thing I like when I do.

I have some cuban cigars in the fridge. I don't smoke them but bought them for my husband. Um, yeah... uh... ;)

I order my cigs online.

I just couldnt get used to the American Cigs. They give me a bad headache.

I pay 39.99 for 8 pacs of 25's

Holy ####### that is cheap for Canadian cigarettes. Where do you buy them online?

Oh hell no. I live in VA now where cigarettes are super cheap! I smoke American Spirits and would bring back a carton with me each visit. Cartons here are like $25-$35 US. :D

Prior to smoking these I smoked Gauloises for a long time which are French and to most Canadians smell and taste like American cigarettes. Expensive but I liked them.

CanadaWorking for a Canadian client before EAD

Maybe the difference is whether you work for yourself or work for a company? But that doesn't fit with your previous workplace experience, misa. Or just who you happen to talk to?

I have no idea now... (FWIW, I worked both for a company and for myself in Canada).

ETA, I guess they would have let my former coworkers in under a "B1" right?
misaFemaleCanada2007-07-29 12:11:00
CanadaWorking for a Canadian client before EAD

As it was explained to me when I was being interrogated for crossing the border for work 6 (or so?) years ago, if you are in the US to work, you have to have a US work permit. Whether you are being paid by a US company, or a Canadian company doesn't matter, you are in the US and working, so you have to have US authorization. I was working and being paid by a Canadian wholly owned sub of a US company, and was doing some contracting at our US offices for a week here and there. I was going back and forth often enough that they finally denied me entry and barred me from entering for business purposes until I got a visa. I could still enter for vacation though, but I got grilled every time I tell ya!

This is interesting because my previous workplace (Canada-wide firm) has one U.S. subsidary office in Chicago. They often send some of the IT folks down there to do work and to work in the Chicago office sometimes for a few weeks at a time. No one ever had to get a work permit and no one ever got hassled. Maybe they just weren't going down frequently enough to have raised a red flag?

Here's a few more questions that maybe someone can clear up. Is the EAD required dependent on where the work takes place or where the person is living? Because as a K3, I could go back and work in Canada on Canadian soil but still be living here, correct? (not that I plan on it, just curious)

Another question for someone related to K1s. If they are technically work authorised for 90 days upon entry, and as I understand it the EAD stamp is required only by U.S. employers due to the requirements on the I-9, couldn't a K1 continue to work for a Canadian employer for the first 90 days then after their I-94 expires stop working until they get their EAD or GC?

Hey Darryl, did you get your SSN yet?
misaFemaleCanada2007-07-30 12:23:00
CanadaSocial Security Number - Who do I call to check status?
Let us know how it goes at the SSA office. I'm curious if the SAVE system is actually running according to plan lately. My employment authorisation couldn't be verified by SSA through SAVE even though employment authorisation is supposed to be entered into SAVE when the card is issued.

For K1s and CR-1s, I have read to wait for 2 weeks after entering to make sure you're in SAVE (based on your entry). If you're not in there then the SSA will do a manual verification which is basically them filling out a paper form with copies of your passport and I-94 and snail mailing it to USCIS... ugh.

You can as a K1, but K3s cannot.

Start here: http://www.visajourn...h...om&page=ssn

Better get it done fast because if it's too close to your I-94 expiry date they won't issue you one.

They're all on the other forums! Won't be long before you can name them. Welcome to VJ, TheTreble!

Heh, that's why most of us Canucks stay out of the off topic forum. ;)

Misa- I have definetely realized I need to keep bothering my lawyer about what I am getting. When I initially got sent an RFE, I didn't know until the status of my case changed online on July 21st. USCIS said that they had sent out the RFE on July 9th!!! So I got all freaked out as to why I hadn't gotten a notice from them in 2 weeks. It turns out that all my stuff is going to the lawyer as I suppose they filed the G-28. I called my lawyer and she, with no concern, said "oh yes we got it and it's being taken care of. They wanted your long form birth cert." (which I had given to my lawyer after I filed. I knew I was going to get the RFE because I only filed with my little ontario birth cert.)

Any ways...I emailed her yesterday to ask if she had gotten a notice from USCIS that they received my birth cert. She then wrote back to me today that they had only sent it out on the 24th of july!!! So she lied to me when she said they had taken care of it when I called her on the 23rd! She only replied to the RFE a day after I actually phoned her. She said they are really busy as people are trying to get their appl. in before the fee increase but that is noooo excuse! So I will be checking up on her! I'm not going to get effed!

How frustrating! "Busy" isn't really an excuse when you are paying them for their services. Definitely check up regularly! :)

CanadaNewbie...another one :)

Don't worry, that is what I have been doing for a long time now. While I did say in another thread that I was "new" to this, I meant the specific question on the medical exam. I don't know much about the K-1, K-3, CR-1, etc because I did not go through that process. I spend a few hours a day it seems finding stuff out so that I am prepared. I have already started preparing for my interview (even though I have no clue when its going to be). I've started to get all my proof of a bonafide marriage in order. I do find though that sometimes the more I read, the less I know! I read one thing and then I can read the exact opposite in another thread so I am a bit weary of what I read.

I do like this forum, though. It's the best one out of all the ones I have found. It seems people are out to help you instead of get their panties in a bunch over what you are saying or doing is wrong.

If you ever get overwhelmed with reading up on the immigration process, take a break and come back to it later. It can be sooooo overwhelming at first!

Since you're using a lawyer, are you receiving the letters from USCIS or is your lawyer? If it's your lawyer, make sure you stay on top of them to make sure you don't slip through the cracks.

You could spend your days online here in the Canada forum like the rest of us. :D

I know you have a lawyer but the best advocate for your case is yourself. Spend the time reading through all the guides so you know what to expect next, and start prepping stuff for your upcoming interview (photos of you and your spouse, getting both your names on rental agreements, utility bills, etc., etc.). Reading up on the AOS process and what others have been through gives you an edge if you feel your lawyer starts to slack on things.

CanadaSocial Security Number
Depends on the state. Call up the county clerk's office and ask them.

When I went to get my license in VA, they didn't even ask to see either of our ID, didn't ask for anything... just filled out the forms (which looked like a 3 year old did it on their computer with ugly fonts) and they typed it in. Made us take an oath that we were not related or mentally incompetent and I busted out laughing (which made the lady start laughing) because we're of different ethnicities and we're not mentally incompetent. Paid our $35 and got our license. We chatted with the lady about if people who are related actually tried to get married and she said "you'd be surprised that it does happen". Then the other lady chuckled and said something about first cousins being allowed to marry in VA.

Anyway, yeah, check on the state because I have heard that certain states do require an SSN.

It's confusing. You either need to be an F-1, or have an SSN there is no other way really. I've looked into it before.

K1s can get an SSN between the period of 2 weeks after entry and 2 weeks before their I-94 expires.
