CanadaUS Dollar Accounts at Canadian Banks
I had a bit of money saved before I left Canada. I contemplated opening a U.S. dollar bank account but I wanted to watch the rates before I converted the money from Canadian to U.S.

What I ended up doing was keeping my Canadian dollar bank account, using my ATM card for that until I quickly opened a U.S. account here in the States. I then signed up for www.customhouse.com (thanks to flames9 for pimping it, they are awesome and run out of B.C.). It shows you the conversion rate before you initiate the transfer and you can refresh the rates at any time. So every week or so, I check the rates and transfer a chunk of money over. Custom House also does NOT charge any fees.

Takes a few days for them to set up your account. You have to fax in a few forms, email some proof and do a phone verification. Then you're all set. Takes about 48-36 hours for a transaction to go through.

There has been some talk that the rates for Canadian currency will get better as the year goes on. Worth it to look at some of the predictions on currency before you transfer all your money over.

CanadaGetting vaccination records

Kitchener Ontario (and he's 34, if that helps any smile.gif )

Ah, his records may have been destroyed. I'm just a year younger than him and the health department had no record of my vaccinations. Won't hurt to have him inquire though. Like Stacey33, I ended up getting blood titre tests done to test for previous immunizations and any vaccinations that I needed. It was all covered by OHIP.

CanadaI94 and 180 Day Question
QUOTE (Griffon76 @ Aug 25 2007, 12:00 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I will reply back to this thread as soon as I get some info from a lawyer about the AP question...glad this was brought to my attention before we went anywhere! If anything, there could be a miracle and he could get his GC before his daughter's wedding and will be able to go with no problem. This could be potentially devastating to their relationship. They had been estranged for a few years and had just started repairing their relations when Andy came here. She and her fiance came for a visit as well as for our wedding and set the date earlier this year. Hoping for the best!

When is his daughter's wedding? I noticed you are going through Norfolk. As of a few months ago they were scheduling AOS interviews approximately 4 months after I-485 NOA1 date. That's how it was in my case and one other person who went through Norfolk earlier this year. I have my review linked in my signature if you want to see how mine went.

CanadaI94 and 180 Day Question
Scratch some of what I said and see Jane's post in your original thread. Do see legal advice though and try and find definitive sources to make sure he won't be barred from reentry.

CanadaI94 and 180 Day Question
1. Not unless they were actually given a departure date.

2. I don't think there is a period when they need to stay in Canada before returning.

However... even though there is no I-94, USCIS does know when your husband entered the U.S. since it's required information on the I-485 which he's filed. I think the quote that Jane posted in your other thread is more for tourists who overstay, then leave and come back. There's no record of them coming and going (unless their passports have been scanned). The thing is that, your husband has now come to the attention of USCIS because he's filed for AOS.

I'd be interested to hear what a lawyer has to say though. Can you report back when you speak to one?

CanadaQuestion regarding sponsoring brother-in-law
Seriously I'm not spamming your thread! I remember reading somewhere that Canadian citizens did not need a student visa (trying to find it again) but they did need the paperwork from their school. Interesting though since a friend mine did need a student visa when he was attending university in Chicago.

Found it!

http://www.visajourn...h...t&p=1056671

You may want to make an appointment at your local U.S. consulate though to clarify.

ARGH... sorry, his brother doesn't have to be 21, but your husband does need to be a USC. Siblings of USCs are the last on the preference list though.

CanadaQuestion regarding sponsoring brother-in-law
He cannot petition for PR for his brother until after he is a USC and his brother is 21 years old or older.

His brother though can still come to the U.S. on a student visa. I think there are a few others here who have had student visas so hopefully someone will chime in.

misa,
After 2nd thought, that statement seems to be more logical for people who are seeking work visa; so that to imply that maybe a fingerpring will be needed for that type of work..in the light of what Tinker said...In any case still don't understand if it applies for Canada or the US...because that law is a Canadian law...

That's what it looks like to me. Or jobs that specifically ask you to get clearance on working with children or vulnerable people. I don't think you need to worry about it since your check is clear anyway.

Maybe someone else can try and decipher it? Here are links to section 6.3 and 6.4.

Huh, how curious. I have the yellow RCMP certificate too (this is the one with your photo right?) but no stamp. Perhaps it's a new thing they are doing. Have you called the RCMP up to inquire about it? Can you type out the exact wording and the number of the law that it says? Maybe we can help you decipher it.

I think it's her style not to tell people right away! I read a review out of the same district office, same officer, same style... didn't tell them they were approved or denied or needed anything else, just "you'll hear something within 2 weeks". They got their card production ordered update the next day.

Good Luck Misa!!

Tonight when you're wringing your hands and pacing, ask yourself; is there anything I can do at this point ? You've done your homework , youve prepared ( extensively Im willing to bet ) and now worrying about the " what ifs" is only going to bring you grief. Remind yourself that whatever will be, will be and you're smart enough , educated enough and resilient enough to find the solutions if the need arises. Use the energy you have toward positive thought.

All the best Chica!

~Andrea

Aw thank you so much Andrea.

I got no confirmation at the interview which I think is the officer's style after reading about her, so after having lunch with his mother-in-law and a grueling drive back (2 hours but we were tired), I checked my online status and...

Application Type: I485, APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS

Current Status: Card production ordered.

On August 23, 2007, we ordered production of your new card. Please allow 30 days for your card to be mailed to you. If we need something from you we will contact you. If you move before you receive the card, call customer service. You can also receive automatic e-mail updates as we process your case. Just follow the link below to register.

Thank you for everyone's support! I'm relieved and my husband is relieved too. It means he doesn't have to hear me whine about USCIS for another 2 years (less 90 days).

Full review coming soon.
