NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I have a ton of Canadian money coming soon that I wanted to transfer to my U.S. account. GRRR!

ETA: A few weeks ago a friend from MI had to cut her honeymoon short in Quebec because of the exchange rate. I had to chuckle and think, "It's about TIME you felt our pain!". :P

Delicia, have you decided on the filing yet? Or will you wait until after you're settled back in the U.S.?

The ROM is free 1.5 hours before closing... you could always do it over 2 days! :)

Wednesday evenings (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) at the Art Gallery of Ontario (permanent exhibits only) are also free.

Other small galleries are usually free. A number of them here: http://www.401richmond.net/

Holiday Inn on King West? That's a pretty good location. It's not that close to Yonge Street. Maybe about a 15 minute walk but it's close to a TON of things downtown (I lived a 1/2 block away from there). You'll be within 15-20 minutes walking distance from a lot of things: Queen St. West, Chinatown, Kensington Market, Yonge Street... oh dear, this is making me miss Toronto and my old neighbourhood!

Museums are only free on certain days so best check the website. Also you may want to check out the Art Gallery of Ontario: http://www.ago.net/

Check out Kensington Market too. It's very unlike any market in the world. Tons of different cultures and shops in a very small area.

Do you know what hotel you're staying at yet? I grew up in Toronto so I'm probably not the best to give "tourist" advice but I can tell you where things are in relation to your hotel. :)

Oh good. I hope I get that guy this time. Actually, I'm seriously considering flying out of Buffalo when I return for Thanksgiving. I just have to decide whether the inconvenience of having to wait at the border outweighs the aggravation of verbal abuse from the Toronto guys.

LOL! I hope that you get good guys next time. Everyone I've dealt with there have been great. Even the sternest looking officer was still pretty nice to me. Maybe I've just been lucky! :)

I've always had great experiences going through YYZ from both Canadian and US CBP. My USC husband was pretty much waved through the Canadian side when he came to visit me too.

Hopefully Neiks can comment on your situation. She works for Canadian border patrol (sorry neiks, not sure what the official name is!).

Are you allowed to leave and come back while your PR stuff is pending? You and your son are not "illegal". As I understand it, overstays are also forgiven by CIC when applying for PR as a spouse. I'm sure the call centre people aren't that knowledgeable... same goes with USCIS on this side (they frequently give out misinformation).

Flames, "Pleasure to see my wife. Listen man, it's been a month, I need to see her." :P

But yes, everything that Flames said and funny enough, he was the first person I pmed here to ask about visiting the U.S.! Great advice and very helpful.

be confident, be polite and respectful, be informed, and be prepared.

I'd just like to stress the be polite and respectful! As much as I've travelled this past year I've always paid attention to other people in line who end up being openly belligerent to the officers (not saying that anyone here would do that) or sighing loudly and rolling their eyes, looking at their watches and tapping their foot and I always think, "How f***ing rude..." I make it a point to be super friendly (genuinely) to them and greet them with a "Hello! Good afternoon." and a smile. After having to deal with a rude person, a smile and a hello seems to change their mood dramatically. I don't envy the job of any officer on either side... it can't be easy to have to size someone up in a mere couple of minutes and an endless lineup of people at busy airports.

Sooo with that being said, tomorrow when they ask me if I'm visiting friends or family (that is what they normally ask me), should I say family, or just skip right to it and say husband?

Family. I always answered the questions like they asked it. :)

From what I understand, it can be construed as misrepresentation to say "family" if you're seeing your husband when the question is, "Who are you visiting?"
misaFemaleCanada2007-08-14 22:21:00
CanadaUS Customs at Toronto airport

If they ask who you are visiting my, advice to you is to call your fiance, "your fiance" and not "a boyfriend". By saying boyfriend instead of fiance it sounds like you are indeed trying to hide something. This will only cause more problems if you get sent to secondary and it comes out that you are indeed engaged. Be upfront and truthful. I know it would raise big red flags to me if someone said boyfriend then I later found out it was a fiance. I would consider it lying and suspect that you were trying to pull something over on me. Just my two cents from being in the biz.

This is exactly why I stopped saying "family" and started saying "husband" and it never caused a problem. I did started being COMPLETELY upfront after reading a post by Zyggy about misrepresentation and red flags.

Also bring your entire immigration case file. You have proof that your case is at the consulate and you're waiting for an interview... pretty good odds you're coming back!

And definitely be honest... since you've been sent to secondary before you don't want to misrepresent anything.

CanadaTracking software???? Computer Geeks Unite!!
Yeah, I discussed this with my husband and he's pretty much in agreement that it's just a bad idea. Whether or not he's messing around, really no good can come out of this. If she "catches" him, well the marriage is probably over. If she doesn't find anything and he finds out? Well, that's a HUGE problem! And if she doesn't find anything, is she going to continue monitoring him? That's no good either.

It's just a bad idea all around!
misaFemaleCanada2007-08-16 17:48:00
CanadaTracking software???? Computer Geeks Unite!!
Yeah, she should REALLY be talking to him and a therapist!

But anyway, she can check his surfing history if he doesn't delete that from his browsers but she can also purchase keystroke logging software. Not sure which one to use as I've never used it but if she just does googles it she can read what each one does.

I strongly advise against this type of spying on spouses!

They sell CC and Crown Royal at pretty much every liquor store in Ontario so I don't think you'd have a problem finding it in Windsor. I think there's a limit on how much alcohol you can bring back but perhaps you could make a couple of trips. ;)

But you said that you guys have CC and Crown Royal there so...

Well keep us updated on whatever you decide to get! :)

Oh 2 weeks... didn't see that there. It could be possible since Kristy is in Canada and Jeremy is just across the border. :)

Jeremy, how many groomsmen do you have? Just thinking of the logistics of how much booze you can bring across the border if you're buying Canadian stuff. Or do they have Canadian Club and Crown Royal in the U.S.?

Tell him to masking tape any wires to the wall. I have a cat that likes to chew wires too.

A better option for him would be to switch his internet plan I think. Is he on DSL or cable? If his building is old and wires unreliable, then DSL probably isn't a good choice since it relies on the phone lines.

CanadaFor those of you in the Toronto area
GST is federal tax and PST is provincial tax.

Yeah, Bell has a "wire care" plan which waives the $99 service fee for problems inside the apartment from the demarcation point (point of where the phone line enters) but you have to pay for that. Chances are he won't have problems unless the wiring inside the apartment is very old or he has a dog or cat that likes to chew on phone wires...

International incoming calls are free with Bell. Actually any incoming call is already including in the plan and he gets free local calling.

It might take a little time before they will "install" it and there will probably be some sort of setup charge but $20 is not bad for just a phone line.

CanadaFor those of you in the Toronto area
There's only really one phone service he can get, and that's Bell Canada (unless things have changed). Since he's receiving calls from you, a basic phone line (no bells and whistles) is about $20/month CDN.

Mine had a blanket waiver because some of the vaccinations are not age appropriate and marked as such. I think some doctors will not say it's "complete" but will give you a blanket waiver. It's nothing to worry about.

CanadaThe only Dr in Sask quit!!

Thanks. I just called the Vancouver Dr and it is same day service. The automated message said to "please confirm immunization requirements and I will get back to you." Do you know what this means? I called the Health service and requested a copy of my husband immunization record. Are thre certain immunizations required to enter the US? Thanks.

Not required to enter on a K visa BUT they will need to be totally up-to-date for AOS so best take care of it now and take advantage of Canada's healthcare system while you can. :)

These are the ones age appropriate for 18-64: http://www.panelphys.../Pages/Age6.htm

Heh, pretty much the same here except replace "yellowstone and microbiology" with "cooking websites". My CO did ask when we got married (looked on the file when I answered) and few other standard questions but I'm convinced he already had his mind made up before even seeing us. Although I will say that I do hope my upcoming AOS interview next week is going to be as much of a rubber-stamp deal as my K3 was.
