Since when? An SSN is not require for anything aside from government affairs. Both of my bank accounts were opened with a passport.

Just wanted to add that it's not *supposed* to be required for anything aside from government affairs but the SSN is so misused these days that you need it for so many things like even credit card applications, getting an apartment, getting a cellphone and ####### like that. Verizon wouldn't add my name to our phone bill because I didn't have an SSN even though my husband is the primary account holder. I was not allowed to be put on our apartment lease either because I didn't have an SSN.

With so many places having an SSN, no wonder why there's so much damn identity theft.

I don't even remember the last time I had to provide my SIN except for a job, taxes and EI.

Totally depends on the bank and the branch manager. They have the discretion to open the account or not. I even emailed Bank of America months ago and their official response was long winded but basically, depends on the branch manager.

I remember reading that a branch close to a university or college is more likely to open an account for a non-resident (we're all "non-residents" until we get approved as a "permanent resident") since they most likely will have international students around that need banking.

The guy who opened my account put in a dummy SSN for me. Head office or whatever caught it though a few months later and sent me something to update my SSN which I did after I got one.

LOTS! You'll be in VA so going with Wachovia is probably a good choice. They allowed me to open an account without an SSN or GC (depends on the branch though). Since you're going to be near Flames9, ask him which one he banks at because the manager there is supposed to be pretty good.

Only the foreign beneficiary is not supposed to make arrangements prior to a visa being granted, but Bren as the USC needs to establish domicile. He's not restricted from doing so.

Good luck on your apartment!

I will definately include something written up by my Sister and I guess for the job thing I will state that we will both be looking for jobs as soon as our application leaves the clutches of the NVC - in the -modified from the letter I already wrote where I will give more details about our moving plans - (might leave the 'clutches' part out).

Good luck with the I-864! As for a rental agreement, I'm sure that there are generic ones on the internet with all the appropriate legal definitions, etc. You don't even have to tell them she's your sister... it's irrelevant how she's related to you in the lease. smile.gif

For the job thing, maybe you can get yourself registered with a temp agency or headhunting firm now and include that?

CanadaProving Domicile
trailmix, can't help you out with the domicile issue but definitely send anything you can get your hands on including a letter from your sister. You may even want to ask her to write up a rental agreement (if you're paying her rent, hell even something like $50 a month). Even though she's your sister and the rent is low, it will still be a legally binding contract.

Have you sorted out your I-864 though? I know that Colin Wilson (I think it was Colin) had some issues with U.S. income and had to get a co-sponsor.

I think we're going to have to say screw it and start the plans for me immigrating to Canada, instead. Kristy (and her daughter) are going to be crushed when I tell them that all this waiting has been in vain. Well, I guess we'll see what the court says next Friday.

Hopefully it will get sorted out in yours and Kristy's favour. smile.gif

Yeah, I realize that. But, in our case, she's moving three miles away. There's no difference in access, except for the wait on the bridge. And, if he did "access" her more often, like every other weekend like it states in the custody papers, I could understand it. He wouldn't even bother seeing his daughter when he lived on the next street over.

Oh I hear the frustration definitely. Kind of ridiculous when he doesn't even bother trying to be a father as it is.

Hope that Kristy can work something out.

Why doesn't "Sole Custody" mean sole custody. This is absolutely absurd.

I guess it's because it's the question of "access"? Even though someone has full custody, the other parent still has "access" to the child (unless there's a restraining order or something).

Hopefully you can get it all sorted out in time.

Wasn't there another member here who was RFE'd at her interview because she only had custody papers at her interview? I am trying to think of who it was... but my mind just went blank. I am sure that it as a new thread that was posted though from her... but it was a few months back.

I don't know actually. We never had to change the address for the beneficiary at that stage before. Maybe ask in the K3 forum or wait until it is approved and try to change it at the NVC before it gets sent out to the consulate.

CanadaMTL wait time for K-3
All the other consulates deal with other visas like tourist visas and stuff like that. It would be nice if they all dealt with K visa and CR-1/IR-1 visas too!

My K3 took 4 months in total. I filed through VSC which is historically faster than CSC and then I got my case transferred to Vancouver. I know I'm extremely lucky to have received it so quickly!

You can try and change her address with USCIS now but it might still go to the NVC with her Toronto address in which case it would end up at Montreal. If that happens, contact Vancouver AND Montreal and tell them that she "lives out west" now... ;) They don't need proof, just an address really and a reason ("living out west now" is a reason).

Same statistics for K1 and K3 at Montreal unfortunately... I think they're at about 6 months waiting time right now.

Congrats on Packet 3.... FAX IT OFF ASAP! Then email them the next day just asking if they got the fax okay and if a date had been scheduled. smile.gif

And from the looks of it, it's still about 1 month from receiving packet 3. There were 2 people who sent back packet 3 this month and their interview is in September.

Also when I sent my P3 back, I asked for "earliest date available appointment after <date>". If you can get to Vancouver on short notice you may wish to just write "earliest available appointment". Stacey33 got her interview in 9 days that way.

I think there's a very good chance you'll be able to get there before November!

But yes I will likely be goin that route just because I will be out there and it would just more convienent for me oh and sooo much faster then waiting for MTL!!!
Don't know what I'd do without all you on here,it's because of you guys that my sanity is still intact,at least so far,,Thanks again everyone for your input!!!
Oh and thanks for the doctor info that also helps!!!!!!!

It's the NVC who sends it out to the consulates so you'd have to wait until it got to the NVC or MTL. I've read of people trying to change their beneficiary's address while the petition is pending but not sure how successful that is since USCIS is not good about these things!

And for the Montreal people waiting, one less person going through Montreal means another slot opens up. smile.gif

Transfer, TRANSFER!!!!! Seriously. smile.gif

Even if you don't catch it in time at NVC, you can contact Vancouver *and* Montreal to get your file over to Vancouver. You need to contact both of them as Vancouver as to agree and Montreal has to send it.

I..oops I mean "a friend" got a nose job and passport canada said that i oops i mean "she" could get a new passport if she wanted to but it was not necessary as "the pictures are always awful anyways". I wouldnt apply right now...it is taking several months to process applications ESPECIALLY from the US. About 4-5 months through mail even though its says 10 weeks on the website. If i was you, I would wait until I came back to canada to visit and apply in person. You can get a new one and show them proof of travel and it can be done within 2 weeks if you apply in person.

Hope this helps

Ohhh... I'd love to see your, I mean "friend's" before and after photos. wink.gif I guess it's not a huge deal right now. I think I'm just bored today because I haven't much to do so I keep thinking about "stuff" that needs to be done later. I should just get my state ID and stop being so damn lazy. Hoping jynx will see this...

I know the rules and regulations for getting a new passport from the U.S. but my question is, can I get a new passport when mine doesn't expire until 2011? I'm not changing my name or anything but my passport is becoming a bit of a problem because even though the photo on it is a year old, it doesn't look like me. I've had it scrutinised time and time again. It was a horrible photo to begin with but it's also WAY too dark (could it have been the scanner at the passport office because it looked "okay" in hardcopy). And my hair has grown a lot since then (it was just under my ears) AND I don't really wear makeup anymore or if I do, it's pretty light.

The lady at the SSA office commented it didn't look like me but the photo on my K3 in my passport does. The USCIS district office security guard commented it didn't look like me and the interviewer I could tell was thinking it until she flipped to my K3. People in stores when we buy booze sort of stare at it for awhile...

Think it'll be a problem to apply this early for a new one? I was thinking about sending it in about a month from now when I have my GC and my state ID in hand. Right now my passport is my only form of ID (well I have an EAD but want something a little more "common" for ID).
