Good morning! Happy Friday to everyone! Awesome sunrise this morning. Will be another warm day at 78.

Wael is coming down to only a couple finals now! He kept saying "it's the final countdown", and of course
that song stuck in my head while going to bed! Poor guy has lost it and taking me with him

I had noticed Wael wasn't feeling well. Kept asking him what's the matter and he as usual never complains
said he was fine. Turns out he really was sick. He is now another one of the people who has to go on a strict
gluten free and lactose free diet. It's just terrible what he encountered and had two different opinions from the
doctors. Out went all the regular flour, sugar, canned goods, frozen vegetables, bread, etc....I was shocked how
many things contain gluten. I am now making gluten free bread in the bread maker, buying ALL gluten free foods
from pasta, rice, crackers, flour etc.....i've narrowed it down to 3 stores I can shop in and have to read everything
I buy. He also cannot have caffeine and also had to change his toothpaste. Poor guy was loosing weight, literally running to the bathroom, severe cramps,
and the beginnings of just not eating. I couldn't believe how he managed to go to all his classes, do his honors work (separate),
drive with being so sick and keeping his calm mannerisms. He just will not complain about anything and makes me crazy.
Now he's so much better, his color is back (he was almost an ashen) and his weight is coming back. What a difference!
I was so afraid for him. I thank God for helping me cope with something I didn't know nor know what to do to help him.
Afraid now it's no going out to eat. He misses his phillysteak sandwhich!! What an adventure!!!

Sure hope everyone is feeling alright and having a great Friday!!!

Middle East North Africa
JeanneVictoriaFemaleEgypt2011-01-08 09:09:00
Middle East and North AfricaHas your MENA spouse changed their perspective/opinion re: the US after living here for some time?
Wael has been here for 3 yrs. I've known him for 6 1/2 yrs and married for 4 yrs. His views and perspective of the
states haven't changed. Loves everything that America has to offer and CAN offer if you work hard. He has told me he
could never imagine himself living in Egypt again. Of course he loves his family and friends and will always be Egyptian.
He is an inspiration to my family who love him dearly. They often remark how dedicated he is to achieving his goals.
I just want to say he has been very sick with celiac but attended his 7 Economic classes never, never complaining
about being ill. He's worked and achieved Honor Societies with dedication, motivation and the desire to accomplish
only what was once a dream. Will graduate in May with a BS in Economics and is a member of the Honors College at
the University of Arizona. This achievement was what he knew would be a long and very hard road, but never did he
ever think he couldn't accomplish it. I have so often said on this board that he should be a motivational speaker. His
attitude towards life is press on, don't look back and most importantly, give it all you have and never use the "should
have, would have, could have". His love of America is unbelivable. He's just so darn proud to be here and be part of
the best life in the world.

He will have his citizenship interview Wednesday. He is going to be one proud American!!

Morning everyone and happy Monday! Beautiful day here! We are to reach 77 today. Temps are slowly
getting warmer. I really don't want to be in the 100+ again soon. Would love to stay like this for at least
a couple months.

Wael doesn't have classes today so it's a "let's do some shopping" day.

Thank you all for your congratulations to Wael! We now wait for a date and time for his oath....
then it's finally over! Sometimes it seems like we just went for our first interview....then sometimes
it seems like it's been years with this process!

Terrie, have you any more news of when your husband will return? Sure hope everything is going

Good morning! Hope everyone is having a good day!

Morning Tammy...Wael's interview was around 20 mins. She went over page by page of the
application and asked had anything changed. Was surprised he hadn't been home since he
arrived in the states. Wael told her between working and classes he had no time. She also asked
him what his plans were after graduation.

Test questions she asked:
What is the name of the President of the United States now?

What is the political party of the President now?

Who is the Commander in Chief of the military?

There were 13 original states. Name three.

Name one state that borders Mexico.

What are the two major political parties in the United States?

He had to read: Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?

He had to write: Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

That was his test! He now has to wait for a letter notifying him of his oath date.
He called his family and they were so happy for him.

Sure hope everyone has a wonderful day! Beautiful sunrise here.

Tucson is such a beautiful city. Wael and I are so saddened at the events of what happened yesterday.
We live less than a mile of where the shootings took place. We, like so many others were out doing our
shopping and errands. Our last stop took us to a store right across the street from Safeway. It was unbelievable
all the police, helicopters and ambulances. At first we didn't know what had happened, so turned the radio on in
the car and heard the news. We felt such a heartache for all who were involved...innocent people doing innocent
things. Please pray for Tucson and what happened here.

We didn't do anything either to really celebrate. Wael is buried in the GMAT books, so he and the

Middle East and North AfricaDid anyone here have difficulty with USCIS when petitioning for your loved one?
Well i'm a little confused. I'm gathering by your timeline you didn't do a DCF. When was the first time you went to Egypt?
How long did you stay? Did you file from the states? I don't think your petition has been approved so until then I don't
see how they can ask for the I-864. I really think someone has your case with another case. Never have heard of them
wanting all this other info. Part of it seems like a K-1, then other parts the CR-1 and both are combined. They never
asked for our combined finances, dated paper, receipts for wedding rings, etc

I am just at a loss for what they want you to send. Are you still in Egypt? I know it's hard to contact the Embassy
but I think I would try to go to the American side and see if someone can help you. If you're in the states then contact
DOS or if you can contact DOS from Egypt. It is past excessive.

Adams grandmother is out of the hospital but now her liver is failing. I hope she gets better, but in her mid 80s, I dont think it will happen. If she passes, we will need to see if his mother will live in Cairo with his sister and her husband or if we will get her to visit here and then possibly live here at some point. Something we will have to start thinking about. His father died in 06, his grandfather died in 07 and he has no brothers so its basically going to be on us to take care of his mom.

Tammy, so sorry to hear about Adams grandmother. I'm sure it's very hard on him being away.

Last night someone went into me and Adams vehicals. I got ready to go to church and I noticed my Bible had been moved and my work badge had been moved. Then I realized my glove box was open but nothing was out of it bcz it only had papers in it. A pack of Adams cigarettes that only had 1 or 2 left was taken out my car and I'm surprised they didnt take my box cutter out my car or anything from the truck since I have a lever in my car for the truck. Then I went inside and got Adam to come out and we noticed someone had been in his car too bcz his cds were out and missing some arabic ones, and his glove box was opened too but nothing missing that we could tell. They didnt find his gps which was under the seat. Strange! We will be locking our car doors from now on. We just didnt think about it since we live around chickens and cops, I guess the kids or burglars dont care.

Sorry to hear about the break-ins Tammy. Be sure to ALWAYS lock your car. Doesn't matter if you're just going to run
in the store. I'm glad nothing was destroyed!! NEVER NEVER take for granted that your car doesn't need to be locked.
Don't know about you, but my first thing I do when I get into my car is lock my door. Then the seat belt goes on. Just
be careful and stay safe hon.

Sandy, congratulations on the ROC!

Jeanne, congratulations to you on such wonderful news! That’s BIG!! I often think of you and how many times you’ve posted “Wael is studying…” in your posts whenever my husband hits the books. It’s so great all of Wael’s work is paying off! How did you handle the cold last week? Oh my gosh I was FREEZING! I will not complain quite as loudly about the heat this summer, I think.

We had a surprise on Thursday night when our car just ceased to function. I had to take Friday off work to deal with the car and find out that the engine was toast and we set out to get a new one. We actually found one yesterday and I was able to introduce my husband to the joys of car shopping and American car salesmen. He did say it was pretty similar there in Morocco. He LOVES the car though and it would have to be something great to make him not be totally bummed about a big car payment. LOL! We got a 2010 with just over 6,000 miles and so we’re pretty happy with it and it’s nice to have more reliable transportation. I’m also happy to not have to go back to the car dealership any time soon!

Have a great week everyone and may things settle down in Egypt and everyone’s family and friends be safe.

Thanks Vanessa!! He is so excited! I'm with you, I won't complain about the chilly weather we had last week

Wael will graduate from the University of Arizona in May. This is his second degree...a BA in Acct from Alexandria University
and now a BS in Economics. We had an awesome surprise yesterday. He was accepted for the MBA accelerated program
at Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona! Got his notification yesterday and another surprise....they awarded
him a wonderful scholarship!! The program is an intense 1 yr beginning in June and ending in May 2012. He will pursue

Middle East and North AfricaMENA Men Being "Men"
Well ladies met my MENA man in 2004, married in 2006 and he's been in the states for 3yrs and a couple months.
We are currently awaiting his citizenship oath date.

He's still the same guy I first met. Handyman, he tries! Cook, can fix eggs!! Knows how to clean, but not up with
how to do laundry! Give him a list and he's finished shopping! I don't ask him to do things unless it's just something
that I need desperate help with....simply because he has been so busy with classes. He will graduate in May with his
second degree BS in Economics. Has a BA in Accounting from Alexandria University. This last year has been nothing
but research, presentations, papers and more papers. He loves Economics with all his heart and his hard work has granted
him acceptance for the accelerated MBA program Eller College of Management University of Arizona and he will begin in June.
Along with his classes he is also in the Honors program at the UofA.
He was also accepted at Indiana University and Penn State! June 2012 he will get his MBA in Finance. We rarely go out
as it takes time away from what he needs to be reading or studying. I know he wants to go out, go places, etc, but in all
good faith I just cannot take him away as it then becomes 2-3 hrs more of added time for him. We have a good give and
take relationship. I'm happy to do my own thing and knowing it doesn't put pressure on him. Yes, I would say I have a great
MENA man. A diva he is not. Poor guy runs on 3 hrs sleep and has no time for hair! Puts on his cap and away he goes and
is perfectly happy!! I appreciate and have always appreciated him being a kind and gentle soul, but he also is my strength.

Not to derail the "when is he gonna leave" theme but how many husbands/wives actually even want citizenship? Mine doesn't at all and I wonder after ten years what does he do? Then again after ten years my kids will be done with college so I guess the world will be our oyster and we can live anywhere we want. That is unless he dumps me as soon as the ten year card arrives. (just bringin' it back home for y'all wink.gif )

Wael will apply for citizenship when the time comes. He's very excited about becoming
a citizen of the United States. Opportunities are unlimited. It just depends on what your
SO wants to do or accomplish in their life! We have talked at length about what his life
plans are...what he wants to do...what he wanted to accomplish. Just takes time and having
a goal that is realistic. He will be finishing his degree in Economics, then applying for the
Masters/PhD Economic program. It's tough, long, terribly expensive but worth it. I'm very proud
of him and his goals.

Middle East and North AfricaIf you had known then what you know now??
What childhood memories I have!! I spent much of my life overseas, and hence my love of travel and history developed. My best friend was always my twin. Being in one place only a couple years at a time left no time for developing long lasting friendships. To this day it is one thing that I miss the most, but, the friends I did make I never forgot. When one grows up in the military, they learn from an early age any friends you make you will probably not see again. It was tough to leave a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a great teacher, but we accepted it. What we did learn was a life long understanding of other cultures and adaptability to any situation. Other countries shaped my life.

I was truly blessed with my childhood and it still exists today with many more adventures!

JeanneVictoriaFemaleEgypt2009-01-09 11:29:00
Middle East and North AfricaIf you had known then what you know now??
Ok, this is what I have learned since we have been married. I'm not gonna say what our situation is other than that he is from a MENA country. I will say he is very self-centered and usually looks out for himself. So my advice is totally from that (and only MY) perspective. I envy those of you who have a calm, even-keeled man who will take responsibility for his actions. So please don't think all MENA men are like this but there are more than a few around. He has been on his own for a good many years, so he is as set in his ways as I am in mine....lol

1. Get him Arabic Satellite TV. That has been his lifeline.
2. See if there is somebody he knows living in the USA that he can talk to for free. It is too dang expensive for them to talk to their buddies overseas for very long.
3. Don't leave him alone if you don't have to to get in trouble on the computer--(don't even ask!!!)
4. English classes are good, but his didnt' have enough people to keep them going after a few months.
5. Get him a cellphone, but be sure to tell him the limits. When you are paying, they sometimes don't really care about costs.
6. He will think he should be able to get a job for a lot more than minimum wage. Yeah, I know they said before they got here they will do any kind of work. BS
7. He went through major culture shock/depression, slept a lot, angry a lot for a good year until he had his job under his belt and his own car.
8. Get him studying for driving test for your state. If he has no experience, get permit, not license.
9. Expect him to want to start his own business and expect it to be wildly successful, either here or in home country, expecting only to invest a small amount of money.
10. Expect him to want to send money home to family, especially during Ramadan and other special days. He will also need to send money for family medical problems, etc.
11. If he smokes, good luck getting him to do it outside of the house.
12. Give him a good part of the closet.
13. If you own the house, expect him to want you to put his name on it too or he won't want to put any effort into taking care of it. He expected to give me $50 for expenses for the whole month. He doesn't see it as fair that I have worked all my life and worked my butt off for what I have.
14. Expect him to be totally shocked at the difficulty of applying for and interviewing for a job. He has been used to just showing up and asking around for a job.
15. He doesn't eat halal except on Ramadan. The Imam here told him that was ok.
16. Mine is lapsed Muslim, so expect him to drink when he wants, smoke, etc. And in his circle, drinking (but thankfully on weekends) can mean drink till all the beer is gone or you feel good and high.
17. Remember this quote from my hubby, "If you tell a man what to do who is from __________, he will do exactly the opposite." And boy, did he mean it!!!! Walk the fine line between being mom and wife.
18. Praise him a lot for what he does right. Remember that most of these young guys have arrested development compared to agemates in the US. (OMG we are in trouble~~~ lol)
19. Don't nag or you will be his mother.
20. You have to train him how to be romantic and meet your needs. In his country, he never saw his parents hug or kiss, so you have to let him know what you want. He still won't kiss me in front of my brother. I have to tell him to say romantic words, etc. He is trying to do better.
21. Expect him to see you as bossy American (......or fill in the blank). He is used to women staying home cooking and cleaning while the men go out drinking coffee at night. He is in a whole new world where he ain't king anymore....lol He does NOT expect you to yell or scream back at him, which further pisses him off....lol
22. Expect him to slop water all over the kitchen counter and fling flour everywhere as he cooks and hopefully cleans.
23. You will be lucky if you have public transportation. When mine started working at a grocery store, the little bus kept leaving him, or calling and leaving messages he couldn't understand. He decided they ( the store managers) told him too much what to do so he just up and quit without having another job. Another major fight then.
24. In my case, expect him to be the most stubborn man you ever met.
25. We did better when he got his own checking account. Many fights were over how much he should pay for expenses and poor thing, he couldnt' save most of his pay check. Welcome to the real world, baby.
27. Expect him to say he gave up his whole WONDERFUL life to come here and you should.....fill in the blank.
28. Expect you to be the one accommodating him, at least in the beginning and maybe he will begin to do the same in time.
29. Expect major culture shock. Every one of his friends (except for one) said they wanted to go back home during the first year. Give him time. It is not as great here as he expected. All he heard himself say was that he only wants to be here with you. Well, he's here and boy does it suck sometimes because it is all sooo different and he is not king of the world anymore.
29. I know this sounds horrible, but believe me, it has been a journey. Things are much better now, he is truly trying to change and not be so rigid, keep his temper in check, and be more reasonable. In turn, I am trying to be more understanding, less bossy, and let things go that are not major issues. I find that if I plant an idea, then let him think about it, he will often come around. Crazy game, but he is young, I realize that. I know he truly loves me and I love him, so we keep chugging along. HOpe I don't sound really negative, Are you serious?? I love him like cray. BUT I am also realistic. It will be interesting to see if some of you other ladies have had similar experiences.

More to come You have more??.....love to all!!! wacko.gif

OMG!! I asked Wael if he was SURE he was from Egypt!!! This is just unbelievable what you have written.

I just don't know what to say. My hubby is NOTHING like you have written.

They didn't ask for immunizations as a part of the medical exam in Egypt so we figured they weren't needed. Then we find out that he has to have them for the AOS.... $$$$$$ and TIME!!!!!!

Are you able to add him to your health insurance? I'm self-employed so this was a HUGE problem for us...

I also wanted to suggest you scoop up some WARM WINTER WEAR for him during these huge post Christmas sales. H won't let me buy anything for him so I'm really glad I had already got some things for him before he got here... (too late to take it back smile.gif

And I don't know if you want to go down this road, but Arabic Satelitte and some of his favorite music on CD's will make him feel at home. I broke down about a month after H got here and got the Arabic Dish... (drives me insane, but has been a life saver for him...)

Very strange. Wael had to have his immunizations as part of his medical exam. Did they say why he didn't have to have them?

Right now i'm dreaming of winter....ahhhh when the weather is in the 70's!!!

Our months are hot and warm....maybe a splash of cool but we don't hold our breaths!!!

I love Egypt in the fall and winter months. Was in Cairo during Sept and I will pass next time!
Lived in Alexandria with Wael for 6 months one time and was during the late fall and winter
months....was really nice. Yes we are very spoiled with our A/C, just ask Wael! He doesn't
know how he "lived" without it!!

Good morning! Week is going by so fast.

Hot temps here with clouds rolling in. Monsoons are on their way but just can't find where to stop!!
Wish we could have just a little sprinkle!

Congratulations Vanessa!!!

Andrea, know your hubby will feel better once his tooth is taken care of!

Not much happening here. Just trying to stay cool!
