Middle East and North AfricaLost Pyramid Found Buried in Egypt
QUOTE (Olivia* @ Jun 6 2008, 03:35 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
"Lost" Pyramid Found Buried in Egypt

Andrew Bossone in Cairo
for National Geographic News
June 5, 2008 The pyramid of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh has been rediscovered after being buried for generations, archaeologists announced today. (See photos and video.)

The pyramid is thought to house the tomb of King Menkauhor, who is believed to have ruled in Egypt's 5th dynasty for eight years in the mid-2400s B.C.

Long since reduced to its foundations, the structure was previously known as Number 29 or the "Headless Pyramid." It was mentioned in the mid-19th century by German archaeologist Karl Richard Lepsius. Then it disappeared in the sands of Saqqara, a sprawling royal burial complex near current-day Cairo.

It took Egyptian archaeologists about a year and a half just to remove all the sand above the pyramid.

"After Lepsius the location of the pyramid was lost and the substructure of [the] pyramid never known," said Zahi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

"It was forgotten by people until we began to search this area and a hill of sand, maybe 25 feet [7.6 meters] high."

Hawass is a National Geographic explorer-in-residence. (The National Geographic Society owns National Geographic News.)

Old Kingdom Clues

Nothing on the pyramid specifically names its owner, and the majority of the structure has been destroyed, so Egyptian archaeologists had to put several clues together to identify it.

Past archaeologists have disputed the date of the pyramid, usually putting it in either the Old Kingdom, between 2575 and 2150 B.C., or the Middle Kingdom, between 1975 and 1640 B.C.

But the recent research determined that the pyramid lacked the winding mazes typical of a Middle Kingdom temple.

Instead, the lack of artwork and inscriptions, as well as the structure's red granite blocks, were typical of Old Kingdom pyramids, according to Hawass.

The burial chamber also contained the lid of a sarcophagus made of gray schist, a type of rock often used in the Old Kingdom.

What's more, the newfound pyramid resembles the pyramid next to it, which belongs to the first pharaoh of the 6th dynasty, Teti, who ruled from 2345 to 2181 B.C. That suggested the lost pyramid could also come from the 5th dynasty.

The neighboring pyramid also pointed to the owner of the pyramid as Menkauhor, since he was without a discovered burial tomb.

"There were missing pyramids of the kings, and this is one of them," Hawass said.

Sacred Road

Archaeologists also announced the discovery of new parts of a sacred road, dating to the Ptolemaic period, some 2,000 years after the Old Kingdom.

The discovery shows the sustained importance of Saqqara, which was located in the ancient capital of Memphis, the researchers added.

Ola El Aguizy is a professor of ancient Egyptian languages at Cairo University.

"During the whole history of Egypt, Memphis and Saqqara had remained very, very important," El Aguizy said.

"I am discovering tombs of people of the 26th dynasty [in Saqqara] that were reusing tombs of the 19th dynasty. It is a sacred place, and so many important people wanted to be buried there."

Another reason people wanted to be buried in Saqqara was the sacred road, which was used for the procession of mummified bulls of the god of the dead, Osiris.

"[Osiris] was enthroned like a king and when he died they made funerals like those of a king," El Aguizy said.

The bulls also had a historical significance: Their deaths were used to determine when a pharaoh reigned.

"It's a way of dating the pharaohs," El Aguizy said. "Sometimes we know how many bulls died during the reign of a king, or vice versa."

(See a photo of an underground tunnel for sacred bulls.)

More Discoveries Expected

The sacred path, first discovered by French archaeologist Auguste Mariette in 1850, is nicknamed the Way of the Sphinxes because of its long row of statues often found at the gates of Egyptian temples.

"The modern name of ancient Memphis is Mit Rahina … which means the way of the Sphinx," El Aguizy said.

"So [this path is] presumably the Way, with sphinxes [formerly] on the two sides."

Archaeologists hope the path will lead to more discoveries in the area. Plans are underway to relocate modern-day workers who live in a village beside the Menkauhor site to allow an expanded search for more temples.

"When I say we've discovered 30 percent of the Egyptian monuments, I take Saqarra as the first example," Hawass said.

"Saqqara is a virgin site," he added. "It's very important for us to do this excavation to understand more about the pyramids of the Old Kingdom."

It must be an amazing time to work in this field right now.

I have never supported a zoo, I will not go to a zoo, I abhor the thought that people go to zoo's. Supply and demand. The animals are suffering now they are being butchered.

Me too Nagi...I will not support zoo's. I also have been going less and less to somewhere like Sea World. It saddens me to see what the animals have to endure. Seeing them in cages reminds me of the Planet of the Apes movies....

Jackie

She's 7. She's really been a trooper so far and really hasn't complained at all about it too much. I know it HAS to hurt. I just talked to her and she has the husbster waiting on her hand and foot. Of course he doesn't mind at all. star_smile.gif I'm just really worried about that tendon. Of course there's no one to call on a Saturday, but come Monday I'm making some calls. I don't care if we have to pay out of pocket to have her looked at. Tendon injuries can be major and I don't want to mess with her ankle.

your daughter is learning young! Make the man wait on her whoohoo:)
Seriously, I hope she is ok. I think you are making a wise decision to take her to a specialist. (I hope you dont have to pay out of pocket though:( If I remember correctly from high school biology (so I'm admitting I'm not a doctor here so don't take my advice for the final say, LOL)....achilles tendon is the MAIN tendon that hooks the foot onto the leg. Something you don't want to mess with:( I do hope she is ok though!!

And one other question. How many of your husbands attended school when they got here? Did they get eligible for any kind of financial aid? how did they deal with the English there?
My husband seemed to be open minded to school today, but we'll see. I'm a bit worried about him because of the crappy economy so I want him to be able to have an opportunity to learn something new to broaden his skill level. And of course he's going to need to get out of the hosue too, esp when I start going back to school. I don't want him to feel left out and alone. He will get sad because he is alone and his wife is not there so i have to do everything to keep him busy. He sparked some interest in wanting to see if there was courses in auto mechanics or something so I said I will look around. Did anyone have luck with getting financial aid though for their husband's to take classes or did you have to pay out of pocket?

Permanent residents are eligible for federal aid, grants and scholarships in an undergraduate program. My husband plans on beginning his Masters program in January 09. He won't be eligible for federal aid, but he will be eligible for private organizational grants. Perhaps your husband could begin at the community college level and take the assement test. They have many vocational training programs. This is a great beginning. He would be eligible for grants and scholarships. Also international students are required to take the TOEFL (Test Of English As A Foreign Language) exam. Good luck!!

We were very lucky...Wael had no problems with his permit and also his drivers test in english. I had asked him if he thought he needed to have a translator and he said no.
I was so afraid for him to drive here in Tucson with traffic going every direction, but he loves it and has had no problems.

On the other hand...our car insurance for both cars is just outrageous! Tucson is one of the highest cities for drivers insurance. He being a first time driver here put our rates out of sight. There are so many underinsured and uninsured here so that what makes it so high.

We pay $2100 a year...never have had a ticket nor accident....isn't that just terrible...

i once jokingly referred to him as "an immigrant" nope bad move....

OMG I don't know why but when something happens like stubbing my toe or I get really freaked out I would yell Jesus!!! and he would get sooooo ticked and say, "you are not Christian you are Muslim!". I'd just look at him 'cause that makes no sense.....for if I were Christian i wouldn't be taking the lord's name in vain. I tried explaining that but now I need a new OMG word and I need to practice it when I stub my toe or bump into something. lol

Wael's adjustment here has been fantastic. I am really so very lucky that he has adjusted to our way of life, the food, the people. the traffic, etc. One thing I know that helped is his english is excellent so that wasn't a problem for him. He speaks with his family every other evening on yahoo and has a webcam for them to see him. Saturday and Sunday's are his days off so he talks with his friends in Egypt on yahoo. We don't pay for calling cards or any long distance as the rates are just too high.

And finally I would say that the hardest part when they arrive here is the adjustment which will vary from person to person. There is no basic rule of how long it takes or how they will do their personal adjustments, but, we should always remember that we have to be supportative and understanding of their needs.

So just have a good time and be thankful they arrive safely!!

Middle East and North AfricaHome Visit By Consulate's Investigator, Routine?
QUOTE (Karamella @ Jun 29 2008, 11:19 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
helpsmilie.gif

An Egyptian man working for the US Consulate showed up at my fiance's mother's home yesterday asking 20 questions about my fiance and his ex-wife, their divorce, etc. etc. (Didn't ask a thing about me!)

Is this standard procedure? Tuesday it will be 3 weeks since his interview and we were under the impression that since the CO congratulated him and said he'd be getting his Visa in about 3 weeks that we were all done. Then this guy shows up and grills my fiance's Mom and his sister-in-law who was visiting his Mom. He tried to get H's sister-in-law to admit she was his ex-wife! He asked the guard about H and if he knew if H and Mona were divorced and the guard told him that it was none of his business to ask all these questions... Mom told him the same thing when he asked her why the guard didn't know about the divorce... isn't ANYTHING private she asked!

H's ex-wife and his children live only a block away from his Mom. They visit Grandma (even his ex does) on a regular basis. H stays with his Mom (she lives alone and is in her 80's) most of the time, but has another flat that he shares with several guys. He stays there when he gets off work late and doesn't want to bother his Mom by waking her up at 3:00 am. We used his Mom's address and phone for all of our paper work because she is always home to recieve phone calls, DHL packets, etc. And he's there nearly every day of the week for at least 1/2 the day and many nights. He was also thinking of giving up the other flat because he will hopefully be travelling soon...

I don't know where this will take us. Mom told them that he's been divorced from Mona for about 5 years, but that he didn't do the court divorce papers until about 18 months ago... (same as we told them). I wish she had thought to have the man go over to Mona's house and check it out since she's right around the corner, but no one thought of that.

Anyone know what the next step will be??? Is this routine or are we in for some kind of long drawn out investigation????

I think the only air coming out of my lungs for the near future will be HEAVY Sighs, unsure.gif crying.gif

Yes this is very routine in Egypt. We also had a home visit to my husbands parents. Many people from Egypt who are in the visa process will have these home investigations so don't be worried! The CO also had told my husband he would receive his visa in approx 3 wks but had to wait 7 months...just hang in there and Good luck!!!
