Middle East and North AfricaAre Muslims in America Unfriendly?
Our muslim community here in Tucson is around 8000 people. They are mostly educators and students. There are very few Egyptians here.

Wael has been to the mosque several times but now doesn't want to go back. He said they are so unfriendly when he tries to start a conversation. He also has tried an Egyptian coffeeshop/restaurant (the only one here) and the same thing occured there. I felt sorry for him coz he was so excited to meet people. So now he won't return to the mosque or coffeeshop. He said he felt like an outsider.

He has found the Americans to be more friendly to him, wanting to know where he's from, etc. First response he gets is how well he speaks english!! Makes him feel good.

There are a number of international arabic students at the University of Arizona so hopefully he will find the experience to be better. One of his classes will be arabic (language) so keeping my fingers crossed he will have a fantastic class.

LOL, I swear we work for the same place! What I hate is the gobs of emails you have to sort through and wonder what was taken care of and you only find out after you do double the work! I get almost 100 emails a day and that is crazy enough but at least they are sorted through immediately into folders so I can prioritize them that way...It's just when the folders get full and they go into another one and are all lumped together!

Our EG and KSA girls stay cool! I can't imagine Melly without A/C....actually I can...once me and my husband stayed at a place and the A/C quit working. I was so freaking mad and when my back sweats I become a different kind of girl. My husband says that I keep the air cold enough to freeze the kids popcicles! He's mean..when I come home he has turned the A/C somewhere between 76-80....I can't stand a hot stuffy house!

Tasha, I usually keep the a/c between78-80 also. If I have it cooler I am just freezing. It's hard when I go shopping, movies, etc and the a/c is full blast I have to leave. Some places are just wayyyyy to cold!

Morning everyone! We were to have a few rain showers but guess they showed up at
someone's elses doorstep!! Lucky are the peeps who have rain!

It's hot here too. Has been in the 100's for 2 months now. Where is December!!

Happy to hear everyone finally had some sleep. I'm so fortunate I never really have
probs sleeping.

I'm getting kinda tired of the Michael Jackson thing. I feel so sorry for him in death
as the media is just having a field day. Let the poor guy rest in peace.

Kudos for the judge who sentenced Madoff!!! My hat's off to you!! good.gif

Middle East and North AfricaAnother MENA Hump Day
Morning everyone! Finally Wednesday! Wael will be off for the long weekend on Friday. We were planning on watching the fireworks on the mountain, but it's so darn hot even in the evening, so
don't know if our plans will change or not. We may have to enjoy the Boston Pops from the comforts of home!!

Annie, it's so hot here so I know how miserable it is in Phoenix. Take it easy sweetie and do
as much as you can with the moving.

Wael is getting everything finalized for classes. They are updating his account at school, then he
will beging the process of selecting his classes. At least he can do that at home online.

He's getting excited! We only wish the UofA had evening and online classes. They only have them during the day which is a bummer!

Here's wishing everyone a great day! Stay cool and take care.

Congratulations Judy! good.gif good.gif

My husband has gained 22 lbs since he got here 1 1/2 yrs ago. He looks so good now that he has quit smoking, stopped all sugars and works out everyday with cardio or free weights. He's almost 6'2" and now weighs 175 lbs. I love his determination and will. His parents also have seen the difference and makes them very happy he's not starving!

Good morning and Happy 4th July ! Sun is trying to come up
with overcast skies this morning. Our monsoons are definately
here with light rain almost everyday. What a treat!!!

Don't know where we will go to watch the fireworks. Love the
fireworks but don't like the heat and all the people. The Boston
Pops or a Capitol 4th looks better and better! good.gif

Hope everyone is doing well. Enjoy this day of all days!

Congratulations on your job offer but sad to see you won't accept it! I can understand your dilemma and like the others wish the job had come to you sooner. I myself would think what a chance to work and live fulltime in Egypt. But again sweetie, I do understand your situation.

Middle East and North AfricaYou know your husband's Egyptian when...
QUOTE (Nawal @ Jul 7 2009, 02:58 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
@ what I wear and what he wears. I married a man whom I was comfortable with our thoughts on the matter as he was comfortable of my thoughts on the matter too. It is not "cute" to me when someone is possesive or extremely controlling. Some people find it endearing...I do not.

I am for the most part conservative since I have a professional job and I do care how people view me in Corporate America and I want to be taken seriously. These choices have carried over to my personal dress. On weekends and at personal social functions, I wear short sleeves so my arms are out, I wear shorts (not daisy dukes..lol), I wear skirts (again not super mini's), jeans, etc. When I'm in Egypt I am a bit more conservative to be respectful to those around me and make everyone feel comfortable.
good.gif good.gif

But I tend to wear my normal clothing w/ either leggings, or long sleeved body suits under them.

As for those hubby's that later change about wanting conservative dress after having knowledge of how your spouse dresses. I would have issue with it..if it was not my choice to change. My SIL in Egypt is one of those women. Her hubby was fine how she dressed back when they married. She wears hijab and in my opinion and that of her mother and other women around her thought she dressed properly. However, her husband began to change. Wear a shirt or very long jacket over her already big lose long sleeved shirt she wore. Then no jeans/pants, only long skirts thick skirts and no jean material. Then, he decided after their son was born (4 years ago) that she should wear XXL clothing instead of her normal M sized clothing. She is actually a small however would wear medium sized clothing so it was looser...it wasn't loose enough! unsure.gif blink.gif Now she looks like a bag lady...its horrible. She's miserable...I can hardly find things to send to her since they are never "long enough", "big enough" or "plain enough" for his taste. It makes both my MIL and I very angry that he's this controlling and is passing this crazy behavior on to his son who yells at her as she's dressing (mimicking his father).

I'm looking forward to her visit but actually in fear of her 4 year old son coming as I know he will be the "snitch" back to his father on what she wears daily while she is here. wacko.gif She would never disrespect herself by dressing inappropriately however, her son is only 4 and is really just mimicking so he will most likely be the cause of fights while she is here. wacko.gif

Anyway, to each his own and I would never point fingers at others if its their choice. (0k...don't attack as I write my opinion here) However, if its not and the person is doing it because of pressure or because they find it endearing that their husband is crazy jealous and continues to find ways to control them...From experience of knowing people like this...those ladies will later on rebel in one way or another. These men don't even realize they are forcing this to happen in the future. IMHO, I especially think American/European women that have grown up in our open societies and then come in contact with these "new" cultures and religions...have a tendency to be blinded (temporarily) by the amazing feeling of being enourmously loved/cared for...when in fact its not love its an obsession.

Again, just my two cents and just an opinion. I'm not looking to debate...just sharing my mind. I'm sure others have different thougths and I respect those thoughts just don't always agree with them. And just to be clear, I am not talking about wearing hijab appropriately...I'm talking about when these rules of hijab become dictated and stricter without a womans consent.

I will say that hubby caters to me pretty well, just in a different way than he likes to be catered to. biggrin.gif

I showed him the list and he was amused but had to point out that not ALL the points applied to himself. lol

my husband was laughing so hard I had to calm him down after reading all of this!!! rofl!!!!

Tasha, re: inside and outside clothes...OMG!!! I never used to wear my jammies all day long in the house before but for some reason my husband gets mad if I don't change IMMEDIATELY into my pj's when we get in the house, even if we are to go out again in another hour!!! I thought it was just him! I must say though, I'm much more comfy in the house now. innocent.gif

Yes, then he wants to know why I do so much laundry??

I forgot to add that a man that has English as a secondary language wants to teach me English!! Ever heard that one???

Also, he yells and tells people that they are a bunch of scaredy cats when driving......well, if you've ever been to Egypt you can only imagine why he says this!

Another one...loves to have his picture made and loves to look at them. I find this strange because I run when a camera is on and hate to see myself.

Does not eat and drink at the same time.

Insists that all males in the home pizz sitting down.

Will wash his own dish and spoon on his own nice and polite but will leave a sink of full of other dishes.

KH...are you sure we aren't married to the same man?????

I'll add a few......

Hair in the sink and enough water in the bathroom floor to swim from ablution.

Insists that everybody should wear "doubles" meaning two shirts and two pants even in very hot weather. (We once had an argument regarding this and he has come to the conclusion that Americans are too cheap to wear doubles...my conclusion we just don't feel the need and it is ridiculous at times. )

If you don't wear doubles you chest will get cold or your stomach will get cold and you will get sick.

14 sugars are just not enough at a restaurant and he asks for more and they look at him like he has lost his mind.

Has his inside clothes and his house clothes.

Buffets are the only places worth your money to eat out at.

Wael finally can't take buffets anymore!!! I almost died when he told me. He now would
rather go to a restaurant where he can actually order from the menu!! YIPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEE

Everybody is wrong and he is right. Ok, ok, maybe this isn't an Egyptian trait but my husband's trait.

In the evening when every normal person wants sleep he thinks it is visiting time or time to go to Walmart. Sorry no trips to Walmart at 1130pm when I have to be at work at 6am.

Egyptian time......always slowwwwwwwwwwwwww......never keeps mind of the time. If he says I will be there at 10 it means 11.

I could add so many more but I will leave room for others.....

Happy Sunday! Good morning to everyone.

We have enough sun and heat for anyone who needs it! Wish I could package it, ship it,
and have someone send us cooler weather. Another 109 temp again today. Wouldn't be so
bad IF and I mean a big IF we could go right into the fall like normal peeps do....we go from
hot to warm back to hot...

Maureen, Taken is a great movie. I love Liam Neeson. Hope you will see it!

GG, girl the trick to packing is when to say when! Make a list...stick by it. Remove ALL
the items you "think" you need, put them away where you can't see them, have a few
withdrawls symptons, pat yourself on the back for a job well done, close the item, store it
where it's not within eye contact coz one never knows "what you might need" and you are
good to go!!! Works everytime! I'm already proud of you! good.gif
